One of the worst haircuts I've ever had. The entire experience felt like an assembly line - rushed, impersonal, and careless. No consultation before starting; I barely managed to say "trim and long layers" before the scissors came out. There was no sectioning, no symmetry check, and definitely no layering. When I asked for layers, he simply lifted chunks of my hair and snipped randomly from the bottom - apparently "layers" here mean the exact opposite of what they are anywhere else. By the time he was done, my hair was far shorter than I wanted, completely flat, and shapeless. I'm still searching for a single strand that's shorter on top - spoiler: there isn't one. He went scissor-happy, took off way too much, and then had the nerve to say how "pretty" my hair looked. It only looked decent because I take good care of it - not because of the cut. Then, when she finally got to cutting my hair, she split time between me and another customer because she double booked her time slot (but didn't acknowledge the oversight or apologize that the appt took double the time it should). I've been coming in and out of Safar for more than 15 years. It never occurred to me that I hadn't written a review! I like Safar. It's a Back Bay staple, and one of the most reliable salons I know. Always classy, always with that slight yes-we're-good chip on the shoulder that I actually like when it comes to any type of artistry involving the human appearance. After all.... hair is art. I've shifted stylists over the years, but for no other reason than I travel a lot between both East an West coasts, and staff eventually move on. But the standards have always remained, and it also helps that I've always lived within 2 or 3 blocks of Safar (though don't get me wrong.... I'll travel hours to go somewhere good). Judy review I have been going to Judy for several years. I would never go to anyone else! I naturally have very dark hair, but somehow Judy makes me look like a natural blonde. I have been wanting to write a review for a while but have tried to stay calm. After a few months I want to share my experience. In October I went to Safar salon because I was recommended by a friend. I usually go to a salon 30 minutes outside of the city but I now live in Boston and was looking for a salon closer to my apartment. However, my experience left me in tears and with ruined hair for months. For a back story, I have naturally very light brown hair. A few years ago I had my last balayage appointment and since have been growing out the blonde/highlighted pieces so that I can get back to only my light brown. Because my hair had some blonde pieces I wanted to get them dyed brown so that my whole head would be one color. I feel bad leaving the hairdressers name but if needed I can provide. She told me that in order to cover the blonde/lighter pieces that she would have to dye them a little darker. I told her I did not want to go darker than my natural hair color and she assured me that the darkest it would be is a half shade darker and would lighten within 3 washes. She knew I was nervous but I said ok as I trusted her. I also said I did not want permanent color I just wanted a temporary fix so the blonde pieces would not be as transparent as they grew out. She added the dye and then walked me over to the heat lamp. I then sat under a heat lamp for 45 minutes. To the point where another hair dresser came over and asked who was doing my hair and he looked very confused/concerned. I think she had forgotten about me or something. Then she came over and rinsed my hair. As I sat there with damp hair I noticed my hair was very dark but waited for it to be blow dried to be worried. Once my hair was dry I looked in the mirror and it was jet black. Again I had light brown hair, milk chocolate colored I would say. She told me it would get much lighter after a few washes. I cried when I got home and looked in my own mirror. I waited 2 days and then called the salon. I told them how upset I was and they told me that it would wash out. When I asked if they could do anything for me they said they could not. They suggested I get shampoo and rinse a few times. Not only was my hair jet black but it was also beyond damaged. I had very thick hair, I always had since I was a kid and now my hair is beyond thin. I don't even recognize my own hair anymore. People were shocked when they saw my color and a friend even said I looked like snow white. I became so upset I even spent a few days shampooing 4 times a day and spending thirty minutes in the shower for a week. I cried so much; I still do. I decided to write this review after today going back to the hair dresser that I trust outside of the city. When I told her about my hair experience I again started to cry. She told me that what I wanted should NOT whatsoever have required a heat lamp. And to be put under it for 45 minutes was extremely concerning. After examining my hair she can tell that the heat lamp did damage my hair and could be why it is so thin now. I obviously did not know how long hair dye should stay in but the time I had it in my hair was also way too long she told me. I wish I was educated more about hair or I would have stood up for myself at Safar and voiced my concerns during the coloring. Now I am left with thin weak hair and I am not sure if the thickness will get back to normal. The hair color I got did not suit me and it was not what I wanted. I started to avoid social situations because I feared what people would think. I did not want to damage my hair further so I did not go back to any salon until today. You can argue that I should have gone sooner but Safar told me "there is nothing that can be done" and "it will come out with wash". Even going to the other salon today gave me a great deal of anxiety due to the poor experience at Safar. I am confused on why so many people have great reviews and why it is such a popular salon because I will never step foot in here again. Not to mention I was charged 250$ +. A ridiculous amount for me to be so unhappy and sad about my hair. My hair was my favorite quality about myself and now I am sad every time I feel it and feel the thinness and think about how awful the color and experience was. This was the worst experience I have ever had at a salon and I am extremely upset even 5 months later. I will provide a photo of the hair. In person many people asked "when did you dye your hair black" to show you that it was not just me that thought it but others saw it as black as well. Omid Maxey is my stylist and he's done such a wonderful job with my hair each time i see him. First, I'd like to say that I give Danny here 5 stars. Although my hair is obviously two different colors, I think it's an easy fix and could be done with toner in 20minutes. Also, his highlights are super tight, to the scalp, leave no root, and are thin. My problem is actually with management. I've called, gotten hung up on and emailed and gotten ignored. I came here at the last minute while visiting my college daughter. The salon seemed to have a good energy and overall very positive reviews. i was given a smock to put on, no cape, my sweater was exposed in front and back and on my arms. I assumed a cape would be put on before my stylist began to cut. It was not. I watched my hair fall and finally asked if she could put a cape on. Instead a towel was wrapped around covering the front of my sweater, but that's it. I asked that she please cover the back because I was wearing a light sweater and I had an appointment to go to and didn't want to be covered in hair. I was told they only put capes on men. They also don't have a table or stool to place a purse or bag on, so had to set my purse and tote with my computer in it on the floor. Guess what else was full of hair. My hair is fine and i simply needed a trim, but I've never had a cut where the stylist used my neck to trim against, she did not section my hair, but cut it all at the same time. I turned my head one way and she cut that side , then turned the other way for the second side. It took longer for her to dry my hair then to cut it. I had to ask her to please makes sure it was even. I could not leave fast enough. I had hoped that this could be my daughter's salon over these next 4 years while she's in school, but that will not be the case. I've been coming to this place for over a decade. Never had any issues until the last two experiences. I booked my appointment online for a balayage and hair cut, the website showed me a specific price and held my credit card information. After my appointment, I was charged 50% more of what the website showed. They told me that the price is determined by the length of your hair which is not true, whatever this new system is for determining price is not working and is misleading for the customers. After moving from Florida a few years back and having a perfect barber there, it was hard to find the right match here in Boston. I tried the top men's barbershops in town a few times, but each of them didn't satisfy me. I decided to try a salon, and I came upon Horacio in a few reviews and decided to try him. He is by far the best haircut I have ever tried, and in addition to a great cut, you can engage in wonderful conversations with him. I must say the price is a bit steep but totally worth it. Disappointing experience. Do not waste your money! I have been here twice. Both times I had a stylist at the low end of their pricing. I know this is Boston but $80 for a haircut is a lot of money, so I haven't tried the pricier stylists, so I can't comment on their services. The first time I got a decent (nothing fancy) haircut from an older stylist - cut and style were ok but she vented a lot about the salon and personal life issues and I was kind of uncomfortable, so I decided not to go to her again. I liked the feel of the salon as it was bustling and seemed to have a lot of clients. However, I just had a second haircut there (about 6 months apart) and this young stylist was simply not good. I have long straight hair and very easy to cut. I still wanted to keep it long but typically get a few inches cut off and have it re-layered to get rid of some of the excess weight and give it a new shape. Usually the stylists understand how to cut long layers and create shape, while still maintaining desired overall length. She cut off about 1 inch and said she was going to cut layers in, but I looked exactly the same as when I went in, except for the frayed ends were removed. She seemed very inexperienced and timid when cutting. It seemed very amateur and she didn't instill confidence. I didn't feel confident that she knew how to do anything more than trim and I don't know what asking for more layering would have ended up looking like. She kept letting hair fall in my face and my scalp felt sopping wet the whole time and even the blow dry was lukewarm and scalp was still damp when I left. I have lived in different parts of the US ranging from very small town to small city to larger city and have had very cheap haircuts (Great Clips and Aveda school when I was a student and had no income) to pricier haircuts in Boston (the stylist I usually go to is further from my home and I was trying to find an alternative closer). This haircut was one of the worst in that she barely did anything. I felt down when I left there because my hair was still heavy and shapeless and it was very expensive. I understand that every stylist has to start somewhere and gain experience, but this salon had no business charging $80 for her work. I still gave 20% tip because she seemed like a nice person and was trying to do her job, but simply wasn't skilled or knowledgeable. I am getting another haircut next week at my previous salon because I only got a simple trim apparently. I only went here because it was nearby, but I have learned my lesson, as now I have to pay for 2 haircuts. My advice: do not book with any of the lowest price stylists (still $80 minimum!), find an experienced stylist who knows how to create a cut that will flatter your face and hair type. read more
