I called and scheduled a haircut over the phone. I arrived for my appointment and waited over 20 minutes past my appointment time for my stylist to be ready, only for her to tell me she didn't have time to cut my hair. They scheduled me incorrectly for a men's haircut which would have been good to know before sitting and waiting for 20+ minutes. Not the mention the stylist was very rude. read more

I was always envious of people who loved their hairdresser. Someone who you could laugh with, gossip with and who understood what you wanted when you're sort of terrible at explaining the hair you want. Then I met Darian. Aside from being an amazing hairdresser, who's balayage blondes are hands down the best I've had in Boston, she's just an amazing person. She really listens to her clients and gives honest opinion of what will actually work. The salon is adorable with a view overlooking the water. Wow - I wish I had found this place sooner!!! I moved to Charlestown in August and decided to pick a local hair salon. The staff at Cut-Splice are so welcoming, kind and amazing at COVID-safe practices - temperature checks, masks, etc. Bianca did an amazing job with my hair, which was in super rough shape after months of neglect during the pandemic. After my hair appointment, everyone said my hair color was the prettiest that they've ever seen it - and I've been dying my hair for half my life! I can't say enough good things about my experience. I finally got a haircut in a year, due to busy first time motherhood, moving, dealing with Covid, and sadly I am utterly frustrated and hate it because it is too many layers down the front and the visible "step" layers makes it look like an outdated cut from the early 2000s. When my stylist was done and showed me the haircut and style, it seemed lovely because it was blow dried and my hair felt and looked fuller but after a few days and a shower, I can't even stand to look at it in the mirror and tying it up reminds me that it's still there because the layers come out by my neck. It is unfortunate because I was very nervous to go to a new place and had also asked on here if they have experience cutting the kind of style of hair I always ask for (invisible layers), and was told they are experienced in it. But I ended up with layers that are quite visible (I refer to them as "step" layers) and my hair feels too thinned out from the bottom (and is visibly so-which I hate). I feel unheard and frustrated to tears because I let my stylist know the two reasons I had chosen to come to this salon was because they carry Kevin Murphy colour and products and because they know how to do invisible layers. Then I went on to explain how I needed a low maintenance cut (being a busy mum), something with not too many layers because I wear my hair in a braid or bun, and how I wanted long layered bangs (and showed a picture). I showed a few pictures but admit I could have been better prepared with better and more clear pictures. I also don't remember if I specifically asked her for invisible layers or not but I feel mentioning this as a reason why I was there would have made it obvious and she also didn't confirm. Also, I wish I had booked with the owner, Grant, but unfortunately my husband did the booking for me last minute for a work holiday party while I was swamped with the baby. It's certainly possible that it's partly my own fault but I wish the stylist had asked me questions if she was confused by what I wanted, especially because I told her I was nervous being there and getting a haircut in a year. I also wish I had asked her to clarify what invisible layers meant to her and how she understood them because some people refer to them as inverted layers and by other names. The one star is because the staff and stylists were courteous and made me feel safe when I entered wearing a mask and my stylist was really nice throughout and even offered to wear one herself. Otherwise, I would have "given" zero. I don't think I can go back. It took a long time to grow my hair to the length I like (waist length), and getting so many visible layers cut into it makes it feel like I have to chop off more from the bottom to fix it. Really heartbroken and sad...never thought I would cry about a haircut. read more

I've had my hair cut and colored all over Boston over the past 20 years, including what feels like every salon on Newbury and Boylston. Cut-Splice is by far the best. Grant has created a very cool yet incredibly welcoming atmosphere that caters to all clientele. Everyone is kind and professional, with no pretense. Vildan in particular is amazing and an expert at bringing my long, thick hair back to life, but there are others there doing really great work as well. They are happy to go as safe or as crazy with the styling as you want to go, with no pressure to head one way or the other (something I've experienced on both sides at other salons.) I visited today after a 7 month hiatus due to Covid, and couldn't have felt safer. The recent expansion of the physical space has allowed for more than enough social distance, everyone was masked, and multiple employees were sanitizing all sorts of surfaces while I was there. read more

Bonus she is incredibly friendly and gives great massages when washing your hair. The salon is located right on the water in the Navy Yard and there is lots of street parking nearby. I'm super happy. Color is scary. Like really scary, and I've had my share of bad color jobs over the years. I explained to Dorian I'm a brunette and I like being a brunette. I have no desire to be a blonde and I really just wanted a little dimension for my balayage. I definitely felt like she actually took the time to listen and delivered what I was looking for! I lived in Chicago for 2 years and unfortunately never found a stylist I really liked, the last one botched my hair with color and left it in a distressed state - enter Grant! He is a great listener and problem solved with me, deciding on a process that would be good for my hair's health and also my wallet - it's refreshing and sometimes rare to find a professional (and a business owner at that) that really listens and thinks mostly in the interest of the customer. Julie is the best! I've had my hair cut/colored with her for almost 4 years now, and I would follow her anywhere! I've come to this salon specifically to continue seeing her (she recently joined the cut-splice team) and it was totally worth the new journey to charlestown. I always enjoy coming to see Julie and having great conversations with her... and the convos are totally not in the fake small talk way that I've experienced with many stylists, but in a totally sincere, fun, and interesting way. She remembers me and my hair bush visit to visit! And did I mention that she is an amazing stylist? She very expertly brings a unique twist to classic styles (done super well so my hair when I wait too long to get a cut still looks great), and from what I've seen, she does more adventurous styles and colors very well, too. Also, whenever I have an idea for a new style, she brings her knowledge into making suggestions that would bring my idea to life, yet still keeping in mind my hair type, my personal style, and lifestyle -- and has prevented me from mindlessly hacking off all my hair which was simply a reaction to a life change -- thank you Julie! And- after each visit I feel so luxurious and pampered that I feel that the only appropriate thing to do after would be to slip into a nice, warm, bubble bath. Yeah, she is the best. This place is located in the Charlestown Navy Yard, so it's at a beautiful waterfront location. It was a little tricky to find the place by car, because one of the streets you need to turn on to get here looks like you're not supposed to drive on it or is a private way. So, don't worry. it's a public street and you can definitely turn onto it. The aesthetic of this place is super hip, clean, and modern. The online booking system is very convenient and user friendly. I made an appointment here with Bianca based on the reviews. Don't get me wrong...she's very kind and a good listener. I was spoiled for more than a decade by having my hair cut at my home by a friend who won Best of Boston hair stylist multiple years. She had great look books, we'd watch a film while she cut my hair...those were the days. And she KNEW I was there for a new look each time. And DAMN! She knew her onions from 30 yrs. of being a stylist here and New York. When she moved to Connecticut to teach fine arts, I was really happy for her. I still am. I just didn't have my hair cut for two years in protest. I'm. Not. Kidding. Anyway, I needed a style besides Richard Palmer-girls-slicked-back hair all the time. Sorry to digress...I have that tendency, if you hadn't noticed. So, Cut and Splice seemed like a good fit. I was nearby at Spaulding so I went on a whim and booked a few days before at a slow time. I brought a photo but it was shorter than I wanted to go. Stylists must hate that. Sorry! I wanted a retrofitted shag that gave me a lot of volumes in layers. I think perhaps thinking about it, I got Bianca's haircut. One of those things where nothing is explained, you look fab when you leave the salon but a day later and you look suspiciously like one's former self. Hmmmm...I really wanted a change so it was disappointing. I also should have asked her to use a flat iron on the layers for effect but honestly, there weren't any. I think it was a 50 (65 with tip) buck job for a trim of an inch and a half off my ends and a blow-out. Would have scored lower but the staff was very friendly and accomodating. I know it's not that much for a cut but I just really love a bold and creative hand with my hair - it's not about the price or the décor. It's what I'm left with sitting on my head. And I definitely got a supercuts vibe from it. Gel, please! lol Next time I'll book somewhere else far far further ahead. read more

I wish to express my deep gratitude for the work of art with my hair and face Vildan and her assistant Gina did for me recently at their lovely Cut-Splice Charlestown waterfront Salon (they have two locations and we went to the Boston one first but they were very gracious in that we were late) . They worked tirelessly and cheerfully despite the fact my hair was a long mess and hadn't had any work done for years and it was three tones of grey and two shades of blonde. They never made me feel guilty that I had neglected my hair which I had. This team went above and beyond to make me feel confident and comfortable and did a superior job with my long hair and my dry, wrinkled 60 year old face. Gina did a thorough wash and condition and my wiry old hair is soft again. Vildan gave me a tasteful but fun cut and an expert blow dry and then a touchup curl to style further. It looked better than a very expensive wig by the time they were done. My hair looked too good to be mine! The next day (the true test as you all know) I had no problem doing a touchup to make my bed head look great again. I don't have much patience so I'm grateful that Vildan gave me a cut that was easy to keep up. Vildan's assistant, Gina has a large and diverse palette of cosmetics. Her expert use of brushes made the application look totally natural even in outside light. I know I wasn't supposed to but I also slept in the lovely makeup application Gina gave me. I wanted that look to last. My friend, Katlyn, took pictures when they were done with this work of art and for the VERY FIRST TIME I posted pictures that were recent not 20-30 years old! I hate most of my recent pictures until these were taken. I wasn't expecting all the wonderful comments too. They gave me a semi-permanent antidepressant in that I have no problem looking in the mirror anymore. I like my new do over very much and I'm inspired to keep it up. Vildan and Gina are so pleasant and professional and my friend and I quickly felt like we were old friends just hanging out and messing around during my visit. We chatted about a wide range of topics. I even drank some wine which made me more chatty and more relaxed as I hadn't been to a stylist in over 10 years and I was anxious as to how my hair would turn out. If you're like me, don't worry, Vildan is a pro! Above all, it's obvious they truly care about their clients and that is what matters most when you entrust your hair with someone new. After stalking the stylists Instagram pages I decided to make an appointment for a cut and balayage with Marcela. She is absolutely amazing! She looked at the hundreds of Pinterest pictures I had and gave me advice on what would look best with my color. She also gave me advice on the different ways I can touch up my color in between full appointments. I would definitely recommend seeing her if you want a great balayage!! Grant is a hair/color whisperer. He's been making my dome a better place for years. And as I get older, everybody in my life appreciates this. When I first met Grant, I had a major issue with some bad color in the lengths of my hair. He quickly remedied that and has since just worked his magic on my color and cut. She truly listens and consults with me to make sure I am happy with the look I am going after. The salon itself is in a great location (right on the waterfront!) and beautifully decorated. She's wonderful at finding interesting and thoughtful ways to keep my haircuts feeling fresh, whether it's a trim or a totally new style. I live five minutes away from this salon and in need of a normal guy's haircut before a short business trip coming up. This weekend I was told by the girl at the greeting/ appointment desk that a man's cut costs $65 with an appointment, and $65 on the weekend as a walk-in. However, she then went on to explain that if I go as a walk-in during the work week, the price would be $35. So... Today I walked in at 5:45 and was told that a slot would be open for a walk-in at 6:30, but the price would be $65. A new girl told me that the lower price was only available before 4pm. Not exactly in line with what the first girl told me, right? None of this is explained on their website, either. Now, what are the chances that a guy is going to walk-in there 45 minutes after this conversation ended and pay $65 for a haircut? How many women are going to walk-in without an appointment on a cold, windy late October 45 minutes after this conversation ended? Clearly this is a salon that the ladies are happy with from the reviews, but you need to manage expectations way better for men. read more

Love this salon! They offer you wine when you check-in, It's very clean and sleek, and they've always been ready to take me on time. I see Beth for my cut and balayage color and from the very beginning she takes the time to ask what you want (and listens and does just what you want!). She is very realistic about what colors are attainable (I was going from brunette to a very bright blonde) which I appreciate a lot. Chopped my hair into a lob for the first time and she gave me styling tips as well! I went here today for an eyebrow wax. It was totally fine - clean and professional. However, I did not realize that there was an additional charge for their "eco fee." This took my service from $22 to $27 (more than a 20% increase!!) + tip, which made it my most expensive waxing in a long time. I cannot recommend this salon enough! I have been getting my hair cut and colored here for a few years, Vildan does an amazing job. I chose to have my bridal party hair and make up done here and couldn't have been more impressed. Grant and his team made sure that the experience was organized and enjoyable. Not an easy feat with a bridal party of 10! I loved the hair Bianca did for me and the make up Gina did was incredible. I also got a wax which was great! I first stumbled upon Bianca when I was on the hunt for a new hair salon, almost two years ago. She was a total game changer. After moving up to Massachusetts from Miami, I was in search of a stylist that I could rely on to be "my stylist". From the first time she did my hair, I knew I'd be going back to her time and time again. Bianca has an excellent eye for hair. She does a great job of listening to what you want, but also recommends her professional opinion. I recently visited her to get a partial highlight and chop off a good portion of my hair. I'd worn my hair long for the last several years and I was ready for a change. I was beyond pleased with the results of the hair cut. I was so excited with how it looked I gave her a big hug when I got up from the chair.
