Ever since I moved to the north end I've been coming here. The past few years I've been getting my hair cut by Linda, but now she's left. This time I requested Ersi. Ersi is a wizard. That's the only way to put it. She is absolutely amazing and creates magic. It's been a bit over a month now since my haircut and I am still obsessed with it. She did such an amazing job and I can't wait to have her cut my hair again. She made it such an amazing experience and chats with you the whole time. I had never gotten highlights before and was very anxious about protecting my hair while trying to maintain my natural blonde. I had my first appointment in August and Linda was so kind, listening to my fears and assuring me she would take good care of my hair. And that she did! This is the second haircut I've gotten from Maria, and the second haircut I've loved. I have always struggled to find a stylist that was able to make me comfortable was also really knowledgeable about curly hair. Maria herself has curly hair and so I felt I was in good hands, I never walk away disappointed. My hair went from looking dry and fried to having healthy, curly curls. It's not just the quality of the haircut though, every stylist in the salon is warm and friendly. The decor is fresh and bright and the salon is immaculate. When I get my haircut here I always feel welcome, relaxed, and pleased. This salon is truly a paragon of old fashioned, quality customer service. It's been years since I've been to Philip's salon, and the only reason why I haven't been there for a while is because I moved away from Boston. Yentl was my hair stylist and her coloring skills is excellent, I highly recommend her. She did this a half rainbow hair for me and everyone was obsessed with it. I went in to get a very simple haircut. I have long, healthy hair and needed to take 2.5 inches off, no layers, nothing fancy. My hairdresser was very kind and professional, and my haircut took about 25 minutes. The reason for the poor review is the pricing. As I've stated, my haircut was extremely simple, and the service was short (as I'd probably expect). I did not get my hair blown out. Additionally, the place was dirty and my purse was placed on the ground where hair sat instead of being hung. Gross. For this extremely simple and short (time wise) haircut without a blow-dry I paid $70 (and then obviously tipped on top of that). I was under the impression (given information on the website stating haircuts are 35+) that I'd pay $45-$55 for my long hair. When asking my hairdresser to double check the price, I was told to turn around and look at an older woman's hair. This older woman had short, curly hair with layers and a clear style and shape. To me, this sort of hair cut would take significantly more skill and time than to comb out my straight, long hair and cut 2.5 inches straight off with no layers or other technique. To me, the service/experience was nowhere near worth $70, and I will certainly not be returning. I feel scammed by Philip's and am shocked they are charging so much. Spreading the word that it's a rip off. At best, Philip's should consider putting upper limit pricing on their website as well so that people know what to expect. read more

I have very curly hair, and I have never liked any haircut I've received in my entire life- until I went to Philip's and got a deva cut from Maria!!!! I'm obsessed with my hair now. She taught me tricks to styling it and putting product in. She has curly hair herself so she understood my struggles without me having to say anything. Such a cute little salon in Boston's North End! I was in town for a NYE wedding and booked a blow out/hair styling. I was looking for something glam that - most importantly - would hold in my fine hair until midnight. My stylist, Ersida, did a fantastic job. My hair held up from 5pm through the entire reception. If you have curly hair, you have to see Matt. I've had all different types of haircuts - even where I've sat through having my hair cut curl by curl. Absolutely nothing compares. I've been going to Matt for about a year plus now and I've loved every haircut. He definitely takes the time to hear what I want but honestly, I trust him completely. When I suggest something that I've seen in a magazine or TV but might not work for me, Matt takes the time to explain why it might not work with my curly hair. I don't live in the North End, and getting there is a bit of a pain. That said, I am making a pilgrimage to Philip's to get my hair cut by Matt 4 times a year. I originally went because someone gave me a gift card. I wasn't expecting much, but I learned that Matt actually specializes in curly hair. Those of us with curly hair understand how hard it is to find someone. He was actually trained and worked at M Salon on Mass Ave in Cambridge, which I liked before Philip's. The reasons I'm switching to Philip's: 1. the price. $45 got me a great cut and a blow dry. Matt even took the extra 30 minutes to blow dry my hair straight. 2. the clients. I was there on a Saturday morning, and I had the BEST conversations with the old North End Italian ladies who have gotten their hair done for years. Being from the South, we value that small town salon where people know each other. The ladies getting their hair done have been going there for years, and their conversations were so wonderful. I came to Philip's because of the great yelp reviews, so I felt compelled to add my own two cents. Iv'e been to Philip's twice. My first cut with Matt was great, he gave me exactly what I wanted and even showed me some tricks for making my thin hair look fuller. My second time scheduled appointments for both my boyfriend and I with Doreen. She was a incredibly nice, but messed up cutting both of our hair. On me she missed about two inches of hair in the back. I was silly and didn't ask for a mirror to see the back of my head while I was at the salon, so didn't realize the mistake until I got home and had to trim it myself. On my boyfriend she misjudged his sideburns and cut one about a half inch higher than the other. Again, it wasn't until after leaving the salon that he mentioned it, so neither of us gave her the chance to fix the mistakes. Overall, great atmosphere and good cuts with little mistakes on both. I don't like to go home and have to re-cut my hair after dropping $50 for a cut, hence three stars instead of five. read more

I found Philip's on Yelp right after I moved to the North End. Jess K's review sold it for me and I haven't looked back since. Everyone who works there is so friendly, and there's a definite neighborly feel to the place. If you time it right, you might even get offered some freshly brewed coffee. My first time there, I told Doreen some really vague ideas I had about my hair, but I felt like it was time for a change and let her have creative control (something I'm not usually quick to do!) I'm so glad I did - my hair came out awesome and I've kept the style since. Each time I go back, even if months have passed from my last visit, Doreen remembers me and the particular style I like. The salon has a true family-run feel: clean and contemporary but entirely unpretentious. I shared Amy B.'s impression that the staff there are much more interested in getting to know you than in taking your money. Matt was absolutely terrific. Not only did he give me a FANTASTIC haircut, but he is one of those rare people whose warmth, positive outlook, genuineness, and empathy can't help but put a smile on your face. I was visiting the area, and needed a haircut. Matt cut my hair and did an outstanding job! I told him what I thought I wanted, but said I'd leave the details up to him, and I couldn't be happier. He and the ladies were so friendly, and I loved how the conversation revolved around the whole room - it was like one big conversation between all the stylists and clients, which was much better than enduring the typical banal small talk I am usually forced to suffer through when getting my hair cut. Matt gave me great tips on how to dry my hair, and even though I can't make it look as good as he did, his tips definitely helped! He even wrote down the name and address of a Vegan restaurant for me to check out, and told me to stop in anytime if I have any questions about the city during my visit. Although I did not request it my appointment also was with Matt and I couldn't agree more with the other positive reviews. He was very helpful, friendly and so down to earth. I don't consider myself very high on the fashion radar and go for a simple cut and although I've spent the time and money on newbury street I felt so much more comfortable here. Matt was very thorough with his consultation before hand. Matt and Doreen, who was also very helpful and friendly, were both very knowledgeble without being pretentious or condescending. When Doreen is not there, Yentl takes care of me and she is also a great stylist. Everything about Philip's salon is '5 star!' It is clean, everyone is friendly, and the way they make my hair look is simply amazing. Another added benefit of going to Philip's salon is that Maria, the owner, always makes sure each of the clients feels like they are special. She knows everyone's name and makes sure that she and her team make everyone feel welcome. I did receive an e-mail from Maria R. offering a "re-do" if I came back in- however after my experience, it's understandable that I'd be reluctant to trust them again. I booked a last minute appointment online for a cut and color and could not be happier with my experience. Online booking was a breeze and I was able to leave a note that I wasn't sure what exact color I was looking for which was nice. Maria asked me questions about my usual color, style and care of my hair and I showed her pictures of a really old color I had and loved. She matched it perfectly and made note of it for future appointments. It had also been over a year since my last cut and color due to Covid and my hair was in bad shape and felt horrible when I walked in, but Maria took care of it and I walked out feeling wonderful. I've been to Philip's Salon twice now and gotten my hair done by Maria, who is the owner. I found the salon initially through yelp, since I have frizzy/curly hair, and most places don't know how to cut and (re) curl it the way I want. Maria was very accommodating in figuring how how to make my hair look the way I want-- which is, I have the top parts of my hair straightened and about from the ears down curled. Most places I have been to get completely confuzzled by this and tell me that it is not possible actually-- but it is ,my initial style had been done outside the U.S. where it is much more common. Maria figured out a way to do it with I guess what the typical equipment US salons have, and gave me exactly what I wanted. Good layers and curls that stayed for months as well. Prices are reasonable as well: pre-tip my cut and curl was $160. Maria is a very nice and genuine lady, and I enjoy going there and seeing all the regulars who have been going there for years. It's a nice family shop feeling, where everyone knows each other. And as someone else mentioned, they can only take tips in cash, but credit card for the rest is fine. read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars because I had zero complaints. I called to get an appointment for sometime during the week, and the man who answered the phone, Harry, got me in within the hour. I've had grey hair since I was about 16 (now 25) so I've seen my fair share of colorists. Matt did my hair at Philip's and he was awesome. I went in thinking I needed a touch up on my highlights and he actually talked me out it saying I just needed a root touch-up. What kind of stylists talks you out of spending money?? 95$ worth by the way? The honest kind- That's who. While my color was setting he also cut my boyfriends hair. It was the first time in three years I saw my boyfriend excited about a haircut. Matt taught him how to style it, and let him walk out without buying any product. (I bought the product for him later because I was so impressed by Matt). Literally the best haircut I've ever seen on him. Matt also used a great curl product in my hair and then again, told me NOT to buy the product, but to WAIT and see how I liked it! In all my years, I've never seen anyone not push a million products on me. I had my hair done today and, when I came to Yelp, noticed a review written for an appointment from earlier this week that couldn't be further from the truth. For starters, Philip's Salon is not "dirty". When I arrived, I immediately noticed how there was no hair on the floor, the mirrors and the cabinets were meticulously clean and the overall environment of the salon was bright, warm and inviting. Much like the prior review, I came into the salon carrying a purse. Never was I told I had to put my purse on the ground. Further, I'm puzzled why any woman would allow someone to take their purse and place it someplace they thought was "dirty". I don't allow anyone to randomly walk away with my purse - so clearly, the reviewer had to see where it was being placed and could have asked for it to be placed elsewhere (if they were so offended by its location). As for pricing, is it the cheapest deal you will find in the state? No. However, in comparison to other salons across the city, it's a bargain. Please remember, you get what you pay for: A great service executed by professional stylists who do everything they can to make you feel welcome and comfortable. I left my appointment feeling and looking great! For those with "extremely simple" haircuts...unless you are a hair stylist by profession, I don't know how you know what's simple. If it was so "simple" - why didn't you do it yourself? All who worked there were friendly and professional...and I loved my stylist Doreen.
