I came to Philip's for the first time five and a half years ago when I read the good Yelp reviews they had back then. I had just moved to Boston from California and have always been pretty particular about my hair and selective in the places I get it cut since it's really thick and most people aren't sure how to shape or style it. I really liked the first haircut I got there, and when I called for a second appointment, the person on the phone making my appointment suggested I try seeing Maria, and I said sure. I usually just get my eyebrows done here ($15 for waxing + tip) and Ersi always does a wonderful job. Mine are pretty bushy but I like to keep them full while still clean. She shapes them beautifully every single time. I finally had her cut my hair and she did a phenomenal job! She consulted with me first about what I was looking for (layered hair with framing in the front) and after she had washed, blow dried it, and did the cut, I asked for her to tweak it a bit and she did it no problem. She kept as much length as she could while still cleaning up my dead ends and giving me the cut I asked for. She makes pleasant conversation, is professional and does her job very well. The ladies who work at Philip's are long time residents of the North End and really nice. Everyone complemented my haircut after I went here (Doreen cut it) so I went back again recently. When I said that I had trouble tracking when to come back, they offered me a Philip's Salon planner. I declined since I already have a planner that I use daily but I thought that was really sweet of them. It is really cheap ($30 if you don't have them dry your hair) and really a nice place. I also asked them to recommend some hair products that I ended up loving and buying again. I really love Philip's Salon in the North End. It's small and everyone in there is friendly and acknowledges you the minute you walk in. I've only ever had Doreen cut my hair and she's just fantastic. I had a great experience here! There is a young girl there who took me last minute and worked very hard on my thick hair. She is the first stylist in over a year who looked at what I wanted and gave it to me. Since three stylists didn't give it to me, I was starting to think maybe the cut wouldn't look good, but I love it and I have gotten compliments from friends and strangers. My husband even liked it and noticed instantly. She gave me almost exactly the picture I showed her. Also, they are open Mondays while other local salons aren't so if you are spontaneous about your hair it's good to know. Two other great points: I didn't get pushed on any products (I believe salon purchases are great but I just can't afford them AND a haircut right now) and they seemed to have regular customers. I have been going here to see Matt for about a year and I have to say the first time I went, i was THRILLED. I loved what he did and felt great when I left. The reason for the two stars you ask? Because every time after that I have gone to get my hair cut, I have been underwhelmed. I keep going back, thinking that it will be better, and this last time is the final visit I will have there - he cut my hair WAY too short. I have spent the last three weeks looking around for someplace to get extensions to fake my way through the next couple months. I have really thick hair and it kinda goes everywhere, and at first, he tamed it well and made it sleek, but after that, I feel like I settled for a lack-luster hair cut. I have the salon ideal: someone who is really talented at cutting really cute styles, knows my hair really well, and takes the time to get to know me as a person. Every single time I leave the salon, I feel like I look my personal best. Maria, Doreen, and Harry create such a welcoming environment. I always feel like I am at a leisurely family get-together, not a business, when I am there. I came here with really high expectations after reading all the glowing reviews about Matt and the magic he works with long hair. I was disappointed. :( I got some well-executed but run-of-the-mill layers and a decent blow-dry. That's all. Normally I walk out of a salon feeling like a million bucks even when the haircut wasn't that amazing, just because getting a blow-out makes everyone's hair look awesome. But there was no swagger in my step when I left Philip's. There was nothing awful about my haircut - I didn't go home and cry or anything. Matt wasn't overly chatty during the cut, which I appreciated (I hate hairdressers who talk your ear off), but he also didn't press me for any information about how I normally style my hair, what kind of look I was going for, etc. He didn't seem all that invested in how my hair turned out, and the cut reflected that. Couple of days ago I got a hair cut by Yentl Burgos and she did a great job on the hair cut. It took couple of days to set the cut and it looks good now. This is my first written review and Matt from Philip's Salon deserves it. I tried this salon last week after the girl who has been coloring my hair left to another salon. I must add, I am very particular about my hair and put a lot of time and money into in. Matt did not disappoint me! He gave me honest advice on my color and gave me natural looking highlights and a trim that I love. He is very easy to like if you appreciate honestly and real talent. Nothing bothers me more than stylists who talk about nothing for the full two hours that you are there- just to talk. He knows what he is doing and he is confident about it. As a graduate student in the area, I usually put off getting my hair cut until I can go home to NJ and have my usual stylist cut it. But I am grateful that my exam schedule and roommate's wedding forced me to stay in Boston and get it cut here at Philip's, as I now know I have a salon in the area that I'm sure I will revisit soon. Scheduling an appointment for the next day was easy, and when I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the friendly and genuine owner, who offered to hang my coat up. I waited a minute or two for Maria, who was just as genuine and friendly as he was. She looked at a few pictures I'd brought, asked me what length I wanted, and gave me a great haircut with a shampoo and blow dry for 60 bucks. I loved how the location is tucked away on Hanover St., and the place absolutely has a neighborhood vibe to it. They've been there for over 50 years, and they're doing something right. I was studying abroad in Boston for 6 weeks this summer. A haircut was long overdue but I had been jumping from salon to salon for so long until I found the one hairdresser (back home in Denmark) who actually knew what I wanted and ever since then I haven't allowed anyone else to cut my hair. Being on exchange should not be an exception. But something had to be done! I've had permanent-waves done 4 times before so I more or less knew what to expect. A friend from school recommended Phillip's Salon. I had an appointment with Maria, who was absolutely amazing. She was sweet, warm and welcoming - and an amazing hairdresser. She has been a hairdresser for quite a while and I felt completely comfortable having her fix my hair. She kept joking around which made the hours fly by! (Permanent waves takes a while - especially when you have as long & thick hair as I do). The result was stunning! I was trying to grow out my bangs but she managed to get them curled in a way so I don't have to deal with weird curls all the time. I went to Philips after reading the outstanding reviews on Yelp.. and after spending the last year searching for a salon that could live up to my previous salon. I was lucky enough to have Matt cut my hair, he took the time to try and figure out why the other salons I had been to didn't live up to my expectations. He cut my hair exactly how I had wanted. I am one of those people that constantly likes to change my hair style, and cant wait to go back and see what he comes up with. I have been going to see Maria at Philip's since 2005, even keeping the salon after moving to another neighborhood. I am extremely pleased with her work and advice. Everyone tells me my hair looks healthy and beautiful and asks if I have been taking vitamins - they never say 'Oh, did you just go to the salon?' I like my hair relatively natural-looking, and she works wonders covering my early grey and coloring to fit my complexion. Maria is always tweaking the product shes uses on my hair and trying new things to see how amazingly smooth we can get the blowout. It is fun to see what new things she has for me to check out. But she never pushes things that don't work. I have also been very pleased with Doreen and Matt - I would not hesitate to recommend anyone at the salon. Everyone is friendly and sincerely interested in making sure that you step out looking awesome. After a fresh trim, blowdry, color and eyebrow wax, I always do. :) UPDATE - 9/24/2010 - I went back last night for a color and cut, and ended up deciding to check out 'balayage....' it is kind of a, I don't even want to say highlighting process, because it is so much more subtle and interesting. I have very dark hair, and Maria added red that does NOT look fake or glaring, or like I left the Sun In in too long. It's not the cheapest thing in the world, but my hair looks like expensive chocolates. If you want beautiful depth of layered color, I recommend it. read more

If I could give Matt at Philips Salon more than 5 stars I would. He is wonderful!!! I have been living in Boston over 4 years now and for the past 2 years I have been going to Matt. I have had some horrible cuts from places on Newbury and lost trust in people cutting my hair but Matt has earned my trust completely. Matt actually listens to his clients and makes suggestions based on what his client has said. I have long/straightblond hair and he always takes his time and cuts it and makes suggestions for example putting long layers (which I love). I also came to Philip's because of the great Yelp reviews. Please note this review relates only to color/ highlights as I didn't get a hair cut. Unfortunately my highlights did not turn out the best. The highlights were not left to develop nearly long enough, I would say 1/2 I would usually therefore the color did not develop/ lift properly. They were also not close enough to the root and not close enough together. $125 later for a half head of barely there highlights and I will need to have them redone again. When my hair is wet you can see a clear line of where the foils were prior, and it looks as though there is no color on the root. When my hair is tied up I can see large patches of regrowth as they weren't placed close enough together. On a positive note I found the staff to be very friendly and pleasant however I would not return for highlights. read more

For the past 8 years, I have gone to the same salon in NH, as that is where my family is from. Not wanting to spend three times as much for a haircut and blow dry in Boston, during college I would just go home. Now out of school, I finally had to give in and find a local salon because going six months between cuts is just too long. I found Philip's Salon on Yelp and the reviews were stellar. Doreen cut my hair and she was so sweet and attentive. I have thin curly hair and I was at a loss about what cut would give it more shape and fullness. I told her that I keep it simple in the morning, so styling ease was a big concern. She listened to everything I had to say and gave me exactly what I needed. I get complements all the time at work! And after each one, I am endorsing the salon. As for price, it was a lot nicer to my wallet than many other salons in the neighborhood would have been. I'm not a typical "Salon" customer, and I was hesitant at first to get my hair cut here. Late one Wednesday I was in desperate need for a cut, and a buddy of mine told me to check out Philip's Salon. I was blown away. The gang was so friendly, and able to squeeze me in last minute. I got a great hair cut. Typically, a barber will just shave my head. I went to Philips to get a haircut and balayage highlights. The youngest girl with purple frizzy hair was my hairdresser but I didn't get her name.. I've never done anything to my hair besides an all over color once! And at least 6 inches was cut off so it's really healthy. The balayage came out patchy and was orange and blonde in some places. My hair was still wet after the cut. So I think because she was trying to rush and didn't fully dry my very thick hair is why what was supposed to be balayage turned into a patchy orange, red, yellow stringy mess. I wanted light brown balayage highlights on my brown hair. I didn't get the dimensions I hoped for with cut or color but I told her I liked the cut so my hair wouldn't get damaged further. I didn't get charged for the balayage but ended up paying $60 for a cut I didn't really like. It's still too thick and the back bubbles out, there should soft v style layers. Ive never cried after getting my hair done but afteŕ this i did. I was very disappointed because I was really looking forward to walking out with gorgeous healthy highlighted hair and it was a big change for me. I found Phillips on Yelp based on the reviews. I can't say I agree with the others. I went in right around the 4th of July unsure of what to do. I was dirty blonde when I was younger and was considering highlights, but have been coloring my roots brown to hide the grays that have been growing in and wasn't sure if I should just continue with that. I spoke with Doreen and told her that I was torn and gave her a history of what I've been doing with my hair, including my recent keratin express treatment. She mentioned that she does the 3-5 month treatment. She thought that caramel highlights would look nice so we proceeded with that route. I should have noticed by the tone in her voice when she asked her coworker a question about mixing colors,developers, etc that this wouldn't end well. The first time the highlights started between 3/4 of an inch and 1 inch away from my scalp and didn't carry through all the way to the ends of my hair. I'll take fault with the very ends because of what I had used several years ago, but I had provided this information and thought I was in the hands of a professional who would advise me to do what's best for my situation. If the highlights were so risky then she should have advised me to go for the other option I came in with. She said she would fix the roots and ends so we went through the process again. This time my right side ended up with quite a bit more highlights than the left, and was much lighter than caramel (which I would have even been okay with if my hair was even throughout), but still had the same size roots and color that didn't go through to the end. She said she would fix it again and the other woman came over. The other woman just began blaming me for the results and completely ignored the fact that I had inch roots. Like I said, I'll take responsibility for the very ends and would have just had them cut to solve the problem if I hadn't already lost all faith. They said they would do the highlights again. I feared for my hair and asked for it just to be dyed brown again as it was very unsightly. After SIX HOURS, I finally left but was charged over $170 (before tip, which I stupidly gave because I always tip) for my hair to be completely destroyed. I should have refused to pay, but I was defeated and just couldn't wait to leave. The best part is that I was given free shampoo "for my trouble". We had discussed my keratin no less than 5 times during those 6 hours and my free shampoo contained sulfates and sodium chloride (the two no-no's for keratin treated hair). I would expect someone who offers this treatment to know better. There has been a ton of breakage and I have been using hair masks several times a week. I've been told it will take 6+ months for my hair to go back to normal. The only two positive things I can say are that the salon is clean and they try to be friendly. However, friendly just doesn't cut it when I'm charged to have my hair fried. Never again read more
