The day I found Phillip's salon on Yelp was the best day of my life and I have not gone anywhere else ever since. Yentl is a hair wizard! She does an incredible job with balayage! It looks amazing even when I go a little longer than I should between touch ups. She takes the time to look through all the crazy pictures I show her and the end result is incredible. Her sexy beach waves are life changing. If you want great balayage and a great salon experience, book with her ASAP. read more

I had my hair done today and, when I came to Yelp, noticed a review written for an appointment from earlier this week that couldn't be further from the truth. For starters, Philip's Salon is not "dirty". When I arrived, I immediately noticed how there was no hair on the floor, the mirrors and the cabinets were meticulously clean and the overall environment of the salon was bright, warm and inviting. Much like the prior review, I came into the salon carrying a purse. Never was I told I had to put my purse on the ground. Further, I'm puzzled why any woman would allow someone to take their purse and place it someplace they thought was "dirty". I don't allow anyone to randomly walk away with my purse - so clearly, the reviewer had to see where it was being placed and could have asked for it to be placed elsewhere (if they were so offended by its location). As for pricing, is it the cheapest deal you will find in the state? No. However, in comparison to other salons across the city, it's a bargain. Please remember, you get what you pay for: A great service executed by professional stylists who do everything they can to make you feel welcome and comfortable. I left my appointment feeling and looking great! For those with "extremely simple" haircuts...unless you are a hair stylist by profession, I don't know how you know what's simple. If it was so "simple" - why didn't you do it yourself? All who worked there were friendly and professional...and I loved my stylist Doreen. I had a wonderful experience with her and I will be recommending this salon to all my friends and family in the area. read more

The ladies who work at Philip's are long time residents of the North End and really nice. Everyone complemented my haircut after I went here (Doreen cut it) so I went back again recently. When I said that I had trouble tracking when to come back, they offered me a Philip's Salon planner. I declined since I already have a planner that I use daily but I thought that was really sweet of them. It is really cheap ($30 if you don't have them dry your hair) and really a nice place. I also asked them to recommend some hair products that I ended up loving and buying again. This place isn't intimidating like other salons in Boston and makes getting a hair cut a very pleasant experience! read more

I was hesitant to cut my hair 6 inches and dye it for the first time ever! Maria put all my worries to ease!! She did an amazing job. The color was perfect, very subtle but just like I wanted it. Not only Maria was friendly and amazing with my hair, all the staff was friendly, and welcoming, they made me feel part of the family even though it was my first time there. I highly recommend them! read more

I came to Philip's for the first time five and a half years ago when I read the good Yelp reviews they had back then. I had just moved to Boston from California and have always been pretty particular about my hair and selective in the places I get it cut since it's really thick and most people aren't sure how to shape or style it. I really liked the first haircut I got there, and when I called for a second appointment, the person on the phone making my appointment suggested I try seeing Maria, and I said sure. Little did I know Maria is the owner of the salon, and the best hair dresser I have ever had. Not only is she sweet, kind, and fun to talk to, but she gives me the best haircuts I've had on the West Coast, East Coast, or in the South. You cannot go wrong with Maria or any of the other incredible staff at Philip's! read more

I went to this place based on the Yelp reviews and proximity to my apartment. I got my hair done with Matt. I asked for 3 inches off, he took about 7. Not too pleased. Luckily, my hair grows fast. My sister went and had an appt with the girl, she was great, and sent her a coupon after, so If I go back it will be with her. read more

I usually just get my eyebrows done here ($15 for waxing + tip) and Ersi always does a wonderful job. Mine are pretty bushy but I like to keep them full while still clean. She shapes them beautifully every single time. I finally had her cut my hair and she did a phenomenal job! She consulted with me first about what I was looking for (layered hair with framing in the front) and after she had washed, blow dried it, and did the cut, I asked for her to tweak it a bit and she did it no problem. She kept as much length as she could while still cleaning up my dead ends and giving me the cut I asked for. She makes pleasant conversation, is professional and does her job very well. I'm thoroughly happy with my haircut and will definitely be back! The wash, cut and dry was $70 and worth every penny! read more

I have been to Philip's Salon 3 times since moving to the North End in May, and I have always been pleased with the service I get from Maria, the owner. Although Philip's is very convenient to my home, I'd visit from a much farther distance since they are so great and friendly. My hair cut (male) has always been $30 which I feel is more than reasonable. I would definitely recommend Philip's Salon/ read more

I really love Philip's Salon in the North End. It's small and everyone in there is friendly and acknowledges you the minute you walk in. I've only ever had Doreen cut my hair and she's just fantastic. It's about $45 for a wash/cut/style but I usually can't leave without spending about $80 though because they sell some pretty great products there too. read more

great place with lots of locals going there. Price is reasonable. Don't be suprised if there are people there that are not in your generation, they know how to cut contemporary styles as well. read more

I had a great experience here! There is a young girl there who took me last minute and worked very hard on my thick hair. She is the first stylist in over a year who looked at what I wanted and gave it to me. Since three stylists didn't give it to me, I was starting to think maybe the cut wouldn't look good, but I love it and I have gotten compliments from friends and strangers. My husband even liked it and noticed instantly. She gave me almost exactly the picture I showed her. Also, they are open Mondays while other local salons aren't so if you are spontaneous about your hair it's good to know. Two other great points: I didn't get pushed on any products (I believe salon purchases are great but I just can't afford them AND a haircut right now) and they seemed to have regular customers. The current owner is the daughter of Philip, so it's still a family business. I'll go back to her. read more

I have been going here to see Matt for about a year and I have to say the first time I went, i was THRILLED. I loved what he did and felt great when I left. The reason for the two stars you ask? Because every time after that I have gone to get my hair cut, I have been underwhelmed. I keep going back, thinking that it will be better, and this last time is the final visit I will have there - he cut my hair WAY too short. I have spent the last three weeks looking around for someplace to get extensions to fake my way through the next couple months. I have really thick hair and it kinda goes everywhere, and at first, he tamed it well and made it sleek, but after that, I feel like I settled for a lack-luster hair cut. The actual salon itself is cute - and Maria, the owner is good at keeping him on his toes and telling Matt tips on how to better cut my hair - it's a shame it wasn't enough. read more

In Boston for a few months, and I needed a cut. Alex did a fabulous job with my short pixie style. I was feeling like I needed something to perk me up in this frigid weather. Alex knew exactly what I needed. She took the time to understand that this older woman needed something a bit more edgy. Excellent job. I left there in a great mood and feeling a bit younger. read more

Reasonable prices, awesome little old Italian ladies (and their husbands, and their grandkids), and cruscanti on the way home. Be still my beating heart! Maria, the proprietor, is a sweetie (Philip was her dad, I think), and I'm partial to Matt, who cuts my hair. The folks here treat everyone well, and I truly enjoy going to get my hair done. read more

I followed Matt to Philip's Salon from Cambridge and was pleasantly surprised by the affordable prices, and warm, inviting atmosphere of Philip's. The ladies who work there are friendly and fabulous. Matt is amazing. I have very curly hair and Matt always cuts it well and takes the time to blow it out just how I like it. I am grateful to him for introducing me to Philip's and eternally grateful for the effort he puts into my hair. read more

Everything about Phillips Salon is 5-star. I have been having my hair cut here since 2009 and have never had less than a fabulous experience. The staff is warm, personable, and very talented. I recently had Phillips do wedding hair for me and my bridal party. We were treated like queens and left looking beautiful. My updo, by Maria, earned many compliments. Just as importantly, the style lasted for over 15 hours on my very thick, heavy hair. Go to Phillips. You'll be hooked. read more

Matt has been cutting my hair for three years and I couldn't be happier about it. I have the salon ideal: someone who is really talented at cutting really cute styles, knows my hair really well, and takes the time to get to know me as a person. Every single time I leave the salon, I feel like I look my personal best. Maria, Doreen, and Harry create such a welcoming environment. I always feel like I am at a leisurely family get-together, not a business, when I am there. And the whole family really does come in, from the toddler getting his curly locks trimmed to his grandmother who comes for the traditional cut and style. I am a very loyal customer. If you want a great cut at a reasonable price in a place where the stylists care about how your day was, and not just about your dollars, go to Phillips Salon. read more

Got a deva cut for the first time from Yentl, she did an amazing job. Would recommend her to anyone and will be going back!

I came here with really high expectations after reading all the glowing reviews about Matt and the magic he works with long hair. I was disappointed. :( I got some well-executed but run-of-the-mill layers and a decent blow-dry. That's all. Normally I walk out of a salon feeling like a million bucks even when the haircut wasn't that amazing, just because getting a blow-out makes everyone's hair look awesome. But there was no swagger in my step when I left Philip's. There was nothing awful about my haircut - I didn't go home and cry or anything. Matt wasn't overly chatty during the cut, which I appreciated (I hate hairdressers who talk your ear off), but he also didn't press me for any information about how I normally style my hair, what kind of look I was going for, etc. He didn't seem all that invested in how my hair turned out, and the cut reflected that. No hard feelings, but I have no reason to go back. read more

Couple of days ago I got a hair cut by Yentl Burgos and she did a great job on the hair cut. It took couple of days to set the cut and it looks good now. Only thing I would say is I didn't like the Diva curl that she put it in my hair after. I couldn't stand the smell it took me two days shampooing my hair to take out the smell. read more

Desperately needed hair color touchup while traveling with my husband on his business trip to Boston. As luck would have it, Yelp helped me find Matt at Philip's, a trained Devacurl specialist! I would highly recommend him and the salon whether you're a life-long resident or a traveling curly girl. Thx!!! read more

I just moved to the area and needed to find a new hair salon. My stylist Yentl was super attentive to what I wanted and made me feel comfortable the entire appt. I got highlights and a cut which came out perfect. The best part... The price was more than reasonable! I highly recommend this salon to any and all. A definite gem in the North End. read more

I've been a client of Matt's for about 3 years now. He does an excellent job with my highlights and always makes sure I look fresh but not too drastic. He's upfront and honest with his recommendations to the point where I've even had him pick my colors and switch things up seasonally because I trust he knows what he's talking about. Both Doreen and Maria have cut my hair in the past, and I have nothing but good things to say about them as well. I've recommended at least 10 of my friends and family members to visit the salon for multiple services because I know they'll do a great job. read more

Went in for a full balayage and haircut from Alex. She was amazing!!! Both the cut and color look fantastic. I gave her the bullet points on what I was looking for and asked her to use her judgement to help me get there. I could not be happier with the results and she was a total pleasure to spend the afternoon with!! read more

I rarely stick to the same person for haircuts, but I've been to Matthew at Philips Salon for at least four consecutive cuts and can't see myself going anywhere else. He does a fantastic job. read more

This is my first written review and Matt from Philip's Salon deserves it. I tried this salon last week after the girl who has been coloring my hair left to another salon. I must add, I am very particular about my hair and put a lot of time and money into in. Matt did not disappoint me! He gave me honest advice on my color and gave me natural looking highlights and a trim that I love. He is very easy to like if you appreciate honestly and real talent. Nothing bothers me more than stylists who talk about nothing for the full two hours that you are there- just to talk. He knows what he is doing and he is confident about it. I have tried countless salons in Boston and mostly never come back. Matt is worth coming back to. read more

As a graduate student in the area, I usually put off getting my hair cut until I can go home to NJ and have my usual stylist cut it. But I am grateful that my exam schedule and roommate's wedding forced me to stay in Boston and get it cut here at Philip's, as I now know I have a salon in the area that I'm sure I will revisit soon. Scheduling an appointment for the next day was easy, and when I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the friendly and genuine owner, who offered to hang my coat up. I waited a minute or two for Maria, who was just as genuine and friendly as he was. She looked at a few pictures I'd brought, asked me what length I wanted, and gave me a great haircut with a shampoo and blow dry for 60 bucks. I loved how the location is tucked away on Hanover St., and the place absolutely has a neighborhood vibe to it. They've been there for over 50 years, and they're doing something right. It wasn't crowded and I felt welcomed and cared for. Will absolutely be visiting again soon. read more

I was studying abroad in Boston for 6 weeks this summer. A haircut was long overdue but I had been jumping from salon to salon for so long until I found the one hairdresser (back home in Denmark) who actually knew what I wanted and ever since then I haven't allowed anyone else to cut my hair. Being on exchange should not be an exception. But something had to be done! I've had permanent-waves done 4 times before so I more or less knew what to expect. A friend from school recommended Phillip's Salon. I had an appointment with Maria, who was absolutely amazing. She was sweet, warm and welcoming - and an amazing hairdresser. She has been a hairdresser for quite a while and I felt completely comfortable having her fix my hair. She kept joking around which made the hours fly by! (Permanent waves takes a while - especially when you have as long & thick hair as I do). The result was stunning! I was trying to grow out my bangs but she managed to get them curled in a way so I don't have to deal with weird curls all the time. I was so pleased with this experience and I would totally recommend this salon! read more

I have been going to Philips Salon for years. Maria always makes sure to put a lot of attention into each cut at a reasonable price for the neighborhood. I've also had my eyebrows waxed there and they turn out great each time! Additionally, Maria has helped with some subtle balding that I have with some top level products. Highly recommended! read more

I went to Philips after reading the outstanding reviews on Yelp.. and after spending the last year searching for a salon that could live up to my previous salon. I was lucky enough to have Matt cut my hair, he took the time to try and figure out why the other salons I had been to didn't live up to my expectations. He cut my hair exactly how I had wanted. I am one of those people that constantly likes to change my hair style, and cant wait to go back and see what he comes up with. The price is better than any other place in Boston, especially given that the service is MUCH better. I promise you will not be disappointed! read more

I have been going to see Maria at Philip's since 2005, even keeping the salon after moving to another neighborhood. I am extremely pleased with her work and advice. Everyone tells me my hair looks healthy and beautiful and asks if I have been taking vitamins - they never say 'Oh, did you just go to the salon?' I like my hair relatively natural-looking, and she works wonders covering my early grey and coloring to fit my complexion. Maria is always tweaking the product shes uses on my hair and trying new things to see how amazingly smooth we can get the blowout. It is fun to see what new things she has for me to check out. But she never pushes things that don't work. I have also been very pleased with Doreen and Matt - I would not hesitate to recommend anyone at the salon. Everyone is friendly and sincerely interested in making sure that you step out looking awesome. After a fresh trim, blowdry, color and eyebrow wax, I always do. :) UPDATE - 9/24/2010 - I went back last night for a color and cut, and ended up deciding to check out 'balayage....' it is kind of a, I don't even want to say highlighting process, because it is so much more subtle and interesting. I have very dark hair, and Maria added red that does NOT look fake or glaring, or like I left the Sun In in too long. It's not the cheapest thing in the world, but my hair looks like expensive chocolates. If you want beautiful depth of layered color, I recommend it. read more

I had been searching for a good hairstylist for the longest time and was getting tired of coming home in tears after terrible haircuts I've received from various salons. One day I went on Yelp and found Matt at Phillips. He saved my life!!! I've been going here to see Matt for almost two years now and I always walk out looking like a princess:) He always gives me FANTASTIC haircuts, and is attentive and asks me exactly what I want and delivers! He was entirely committed to giving me the best haircut he could. THANK YOU MATT FOR BEING SO AWESOME! YOU ROCK AND I WILL BE BACK!! read more

If I could give Matt at Philips Salon more than 5 stars I would. He is wonderful!!! I have been living in Boston over 4 years now and for the past 2 years I have been going to Matt. I have had some horrible cuts from places on Newbury and lost trust in people cutting my hair but Matt has earned my trust completely. Matt actually listens to his clients and makes suggestions based on what his client has said. I have long/straightblond hair and he always takes his time and cuts it and makes suggestions for example putting long layers (which I love). If you read this please make an appointment with Matt and I promise you will not regretit at all. read more

I also came to Philip's because of the great Yelp reviews. Please note this review relates only to color/ highlights as I didn't get a hair cut. Unfortunately my highlights did not turn out the best. The highlights were not left to develop nearly long enough, I would say 1/2 I would usually therefore the color did not develop/ lift properly. They were also not close enough to the root and not close enough together. $125 later for a half head of barely there highlights and I will need to have them redone again. When my hair is wet you can see a clear line of where the foils were prior, and it looks as though there is no color on the root. When my hair is tied up I can see large patches of regrowth as they weren't placed close enough together. On a positive note I found the staff to be very friendly and pleasant however I would not return for highlights. read more

I have had more dentists than people cut my hair. For years I kept my hair short so I only went to places that had an actual barber poll. When I decided to grow ouy my hair, my barber couldn't quite get it so I changed over to philiips and haven't looked back. When living in NYC, I would still get my hair cut up here. read more

Great experience! To further emphasize how positive my experience was, I had to create this yelp account. For the past 8 years, I have gone to the same salon in NH, as that is where my family is from. Not wanting to spend three times as much for a haircut and blow dry in Boston, during college I would just go home. Now out of school, I finally had to give in and find a local salon because going six months between cuts is just too long. I found Philip's Salon on Yelp and the reviews were stellar. Doreen cut my hair and she was so sweet and attentive. I have thin curly hair and I was at a loss about what cut would give it more shape and fullness. I told her that I keep it simple in the morning, so styling ease was a big concern. She listened to everything I had to say and gave me exactly what I needed. I get complements all the time at work! And after each one, I am endorsing the salon. As for price, it was a lot nicer to my wallet than many other salons in the neighborhood would have been. Finally, I don't need to go home to NH to get a lovely, and affordable, haircut. Thank you again, Doreen! read more

I got my hair done this past weekend at Philip's Salon. Maria was my hairdresser and she did a fabulous job. I was going to a wedding that night and asked for curls. I trusted Maria and let her work her magic with the curling iron. What I ended up with was a fabulous, retro, curly bob. It was so cute and glamorous. Maria was also just a fantastic person to chat with. In addition, they even offered me coffee before doing my hair. I'd go back again if I lived in Boston. read more

I'm not a typical "Salon" customer, and I was hesitant at first to get my hair cut here. Late one Wednesday I was in desperate need for a cut, and a buddy of mine told me to check out Philip's Salon. I was blown away. The gang was so friendly, and able to squeeze me in last minute. I got a great hair cut. Typically, a barber will just shave my head. Here, they take the time to understand your hair and approach it like skilled artists. Now I tell all the guys I know in the Northend and beyond to get their hair cuts here. read more

I went to Philips to get a haircut and balayage highlights. The youngest girl with purple frizzy hair was my hairdresser but I didn't get her name.. I've never done anything to my hair besides an all over color once! And at least 6 inches was cut off so it's really healthy. The balayage came out patchy and was orange and blonde in some places. My hair was still wet after the cut. So I think because she was trying to rush and didn't fully dry my very thick hair is why what was supposed to be balayage turned into a patchy orange, red, yellow stringy mess. I wanted light brown balayage highlights on my brown hair. I didn't get the dimensions I hoped for with cut or color but I told her I liked the cut so my hair wouldn't get damaged further. I didn't get charged for the balayage but ended up paying $60 for a cut I didn't really like. It's still too thick and the back bubbles out, there should soft v style layers. Ive never cried after getting my hair done but afteŕ this i did. I was very disappointed because I was really looking forward to walking out with gorgeous healthy highlighted hair and it was a big change for me. I made an appointment in about a week but im going somewhere else now. read more
