Salon is clean and well lit, understated comfortable decoration, and I really liked that the salon provides the customers with a robe for the duration of the cut (no more sweating in your clothes under the usual haircutting tarp) 3. Haircuts here are absolutely stunning. I usually ask for Taylor. Super awesome girl. I cut my hair cut in New York one time and the guy gave me a mullet and I cried for weeks about it. I was thought 'why was I so stupid, I should have just gotten it done at Safar'. Taylor does magic - she was able to turn a mullet into one of the most stylish, amazing haircuts of my life. It is a bit pricey here, but it was FULLY worth it. Once you get your hair done at Safar, you will never step foot into another salon. Trisha Shea is the best colorist I have ever been to I am a multi tonal blonde and I have gone to several places to get "the perfect blonde" which I thought was unattainable until now. It looks shiny, vibrant, multi-dimensional and natural. I am never going anywhere else, she exceeded my expectations tremendously. Also, the way she did the foils allows me to wear my hair up without it looking funny which is perfect for me To make it even better, I got styled immediatly after for my Friday night out, and another stylist did my blow out and curled my hair with an iron. I came here after I experienced a botched blonde at another salon (which shall remain un-named). I showed Jordan pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like and she knew exactly what to do. I just want to thank Omid Maxey for my big-kid hair cut. 5 years of graduate school and hair neglect, I had grown accustom to my long frizzy hair. However, with a new job, I knew I needed a change and I let Omid do what he thought was needed. While he was cutting away, I got nervous... long strands of hair were no longer attached to my head. It's rare that I can sit down in a stylists chair and have complete confidence that I'll leave without crying. I was blessed with frantic hair- it's partially wavy, partially straight, somewhat frizzy- and most stylists shy away from getting tangled up in it. Enter Omid Maxey. I literally sit down and tell him what kind of mood I'm in- "new spring look" "edgy" "business professional"- and he just runs with it. And his ability to highlight/color is unbeatable. Even my mother, the most difficult woman to please- loves my hair color when I leave his chair. I admit, I went elsewhere to find a "better deal" but in the end, realized that I wasn't saving much money and was never satisfied with my cut or color. I've come here quite a few times and will not ever go anywhere else (as does my mother). The staff is very friendly as well as the management team and the receptionist. Jordan, has been absolutely amazing. She's very friendly and really listens to what you want done. I've actually gotten to the point where I can let her do her thing and know that she will do a phenomenal job. When I haven't been able to see Jordan (as she works Weds-Sat), I've been confident enough in the rest of the stylists to do a great job as well (specifically Ana!). Saul is also great! Probably the best haircut that I have ever gotten! I called the salon around four on a Wednesday and they said that they could take me at 4:30 which was great, most salons around here say you have to book around 6 weeks in advance. Amanda was the stylist who did my hair and I would highly, highly, highly recommend her. I wanted to get a long bob type haircut, and my hair at the time was down to my shoulder blades. I'm always nervous about going to new places because I have such curly, thick hair that a lot of haircuts leave me with a really poofy look. I am giving the salon a 4 and Horatio a 5. Besides the hometown hairdresser I grew up with I have never stuck with one hairdresser until Horatio. I have very curly hair and have found most hair dressers have no idea how to cut it. They try to rush the process, approach your hair like they are working with straight hair and it never works. People with curly hair know this. Horatio not only knows how to cut curly hair, he also seems to enjoy the challenge. He actually listens to you and after asking you what you had in mind he makes sure you know what he is doing every step of they way and why he is doing it. I loved when he compared curly hair to a ribbons that need to be moved around and cut delicately. His attention to detail is amazing and I don't plan on going to a different stylist anytime in the future. If you have curly hair I more than recommend Horatio! The salon is great but on the weekends it can get busy and annoying. However, a haircut with Horatio makes it worth the trip. read more

The atmosphere at this salon is fantastic, and everyone is super friendly and make you feel at ease. Free cappucinos are excellent! It also was less expensive then I had expected given the trendy set-up. My stylist was very nice, dedicated and careful with his work, which I truly appreciate. The only downside for me is that I felt he cut off a lot more than I wanted. To be fair, I probably was not as clear as I could have been about how much I wanted cut off, but I do think he ended up going a little overboard without my full consent. For example, I said I need to be able to put my hair up in a ponytail, and I can't do that without some of the shorter pieces on the back falling out. Additionally, we had agreed on the length reaching at least to my collar-bone, but it barely skims my shoulders. Since he did a great job on the cut (lots of volume and layers), I am willing to give this salon a pretty good review and come back again for another try. Absolute best salon in Boston- and so affordable for being on Newbury Street. I moved here from California 6 years ago with my perfect shade of blonde and almost immediately had a stylist at a salon in the suburbs turn my hair ORANGE. I turned to Safar after a recommendation from a friend and have not looked back. If you're a blonde- GO TO TYZZA. She is the queen of blonde hair. Always gives me the perfectly toned, non-brassy look I'm going for. She is efficient, super friendly, listens to exactly what you're going for and also offers her advice on what would look best. I had long, fine hair when I first went to her and was so stuck on keeping it long. Then in October 2014, after she'd proposed the idea that I go shorter so that my fine hair would look thick, we cut it into a very blunt lob (long bob) and wow, what a difference. I'm constantly getting compliments on the awesome color and cut and I've kept this style for over a year. It just fits me so well and she was able to see that. She is just the best- I've referred 3 other blonde friends to her that have not returned to their previous salons and each continue to go to her. Can't recommend highly enough. read more

Amanda is hands down one of the best on the Newbury salon circuit and you better become a regular client before she's in high demand. The first time I saw her, she took me from 5+ years of blonde to the most sumptuous, dimensional, rich, chocolate brown - using ONLY foils! She creates the most baby-fine highlights you'll ever see, seemingly picking up only 3 or 4 strands at a time which makes the regrowth seamless and natural. I'm the type to show up with a Pinterest board full of Olivia Palermo headshots but she knows exactly what to do after a 5 minute chat. She keeps everything in line with how much effort you're willing to put into your hair (aka no cuts that require daily blowouts if you're the air drying type), checks in every step along the way to make sure you're on the same page, and has a fantastic "bedside manner." As for the salon: fun, trendy, stylists seem to have a great rapport with each other. Clients getting everything from ultra-natural balayage to magenta hair. On weekends, they bring around pizza and other small bites. $195 for highlights, colorance, cut, and (informative, instructional) blowout? Sold. read more

Amanda is super talented. I can't recommend her enough! I went in to freshen up my blonde and get a trim. She listened to my long list of things I wanted and didn't want. As a blonde, tone is most important to me so I was really specific with my requests. I showed her a photo of what I wanted it and she nailed it. She did balayage throughout, toned me and gave me a trim. She was honest and thoughtful when I asked her questions or for her opinion. We made a plan for future appointments and a way to go about achieving some long term hair goals, I.e; getting my hair to a healthier place. My hair looks the best it has in several years. How do I say this? I think one word sums it up. That one word would be... GROSS! OMG, holy hell, what is wrong with this place? Let me tell you. First off, buywithme is partly to blame. They offered $30 mani and pedi which is normally $55. This place isn't set up for nails whatsoever... so shame on you buywithme for offering it. We booked three appointments... we were brought upstairs and we waited... then my cousin went first and was put in this big leather chair with basically a tub below it... and soaked her feet. Then she was just left there for a long time. Finally the woman comes back and starts the pedicure... twice during it she got up to go wax someones eyebrows. Um, can you say overbook? The only other pedicure station was a plastic foot tub you can get at Kmart. $55 normally? Are you out of your mind? While she was getting her feet done I had my manicure and that was okay... but way across on the other end of the salon. The point of girls getting their nails done together is so they can chat! Back over at the pedicure stations I noticed trash everywhere! Tissues, dirty cotton balls, ehck! Finally when they got to my sister who was third in line the woman did not clean the tools from my cousin who went before her. Thank god they're related and my cousin is a known quantity. Still, not very professional of a high end salon. Safar... it seems you're good at hair so stick to that... and buywithme, please don't offer deals where the place clearly cannot handle anymore clients. I was visiting home (from NYC) when I went to Salon Safar, after seeing great reviews. I wanted to do the ombre look. I expressed concerns to my stylist, and told him I had been dying my hair black for some time (in the salon), and said if it was going to be a problem at all I didn't want to do it. He says we can do it, I show him a photo of what I want, he asks do I want it exactly like the photo, and I say yes. Great. Problem #1 occurred when the foils on my hair began heating up, EXTREMELY HOT. I told the stylist, he quickly rinsed my hair, and was saying that it didn't look good, but he'd fix it. I guess it fried or something? He said it was because I use permanent black color on my hair. I am concerned. Problem #2, when my hair was done, I did not have an "ombre look" at all, and could barely even see any highlights/color in my hair. They were all underneath, in the layer of hair closest to my neck. Also, it was very patchy, as in, one inch of a lock of hair would be colored, next inch would not be colored. Later I learned, from another hairdresser, that he probably shouldn't have even applied regular color to my dyed-black hair (guess that's why the color didn't take well and got splotchy), he should have bleached it first and done a toner. Well, I don't know much about hair, but I know it didn't look good. Problem #3, I paid $220 plus tip, for my hair to basically look the same, just random subtle highlights underneath. No one noticed a difference. I think when you ask for "ombre", you should notice a difference. Problem #4, I was at the salon from 2:30pm-6pm. When I went to another salon to try to fix my hair, it only took 2 hours. I'm out approximately $250 and nearly 4 hours of time. I called and they said to come back in, but I live in NYC. And not sure I'd want them to touch my hair again honestly. I just felt I should not charged for "ombre" since that isn't what I got. They returned my followup call with a voicemail, but have since ignored my calls/my messages for the manager. I'm really confused because this salon has such great reviews. So let me tell you about the last few times I came here. Actually, I will only focus on the last time, since I don't have all night and I need to get up in 20 min anyway. Last time I got my hair cut and highlighted by some little Brazilian chick who didn't give a rat's ass about any of the instructions I gave her. I don't remember her name because I was so disgruntled with the whole thing that I didn't want to have anything to do with them again. The girl cut my hair over and over and over and then straightened it a million times. I asked her to stop going over the same sections and she just wouldnt do it. The place was closing and I had somewhere to be and I was the last person in there to boot, and STILL! she ignored my wishes. The haircut was so jacked and I felt so ugly that I went to Floyd's Barbershop on Mass Ave in the backbay a few days later, where some angry emo girl fixed it right up. THIS IS KEY: if your hairstylist doesn't listen to you, just get up and walk out. You're probably better off with a half assed job than a full assed job. read more

The front desk staff plus owner sat us down with water and told us someone would be with us right away. Who knew they'd put us with the perfect match. haha. He basically sat me down like I was any other clientele for a solid 20 minutes and explained why he would not be cutting anymore of my bangs, got to know my 'asian' hair and showed me all these tricks he personally uses to hide hair at shoots or w/e. Even with the product right there in his hand.. he didn;t try to upsale me with some overpriced bottle of goo..just assured me a little will do.. and sent me on my way. I was relieved and happy. When we went to pay.. everyone just smiled and said it's cool. Who does that? I paid $6 for my soul at Floyd's and left with what it felt like.. a therapy session at Safar for nothing. After that .. I decided to get my full hair done right away by Omid. The process was smooth and left me with bouncy hair. It was a bit too girly-homemaker for my taste/style.. nonetheless loved it.. no hard feelings especially with the fact this was our first encounter and I let him do whatever he wanted. Anyways.. conclusion is that .. each salon has their "thing" and Safar sure does theirs. If you are ever doubting that lady classy feeling in your scalp.. this is it. She was pleasant but just never really listened to my answer when asked what I wanted and so the result was pretty ordinary. I went away with wet hair, bogged together with some product and was too embarrassed to grab a coffee straight after because of how I looked. It's the little things that count. Mariyah who did my Brazilian wax was such a sweetheart. She was gentle and efficient which was good because this was my first Brazilian. I forget the name of the guy who did my hair but he was entirely too good looking. However, he did an AMAZING job blow drying my hair although he def did take his time. My 3 other friends got their hair done here at the same time and were all done 30 min. before me (keep in mind that I did get a wax and they didn't). The staff is very courteous and attentive. The Brazilian was 50 dollars and the blow dry was 45. The shampooing was not so pleasant though. read more

I moved to Boston a little over a year ago. After one horrible visit to another Newbury St Salon, I ended up at Safar with Ana. Ana has been cutting my hair since the very beginning, and consistently doing a fabulous job! I am always impressed how she listens to what I want, however she doesn't ask TOO many questions like some do. (You know what I mean.) One of the most important parts about Ana's styles, is that my hair always grows out very well (which can be challenging for most men.) Not only is Ana always friendly, and stylish- you will never see her twice with the same "do!" I have mixed feelings about Safar. When I walked in, I was greeted promptly and sent to change and wait for a shampoo. I waited and waited. Someone offered to find a person to shampoo me. A girl came by and offered to shampoo me. None of these people seemed particularly friendly. They all seemed busy and rushed on this Wednesday afternoon. The shampoo job, reminded me of when I was a little kid and my busy, working mother washed my hair. Water went everywhere (eyes and ears) and shampoo was slapped into my hair. I had read lots of great reviews, so maybe this was just an off day... maybe Wednesday is a busy day for salons... I don't know, I just did not receive the level of pampering and friendliness that I expect from a salon. *** However, like I said, mixed feelings, so there was an upside and a very big one. I followed the advice of the reviews and went to see Horacio. He was very friendly and kind. He took so much care with my haircut! I'm always worried when I get my first haircut from a new stylist because I'm Asian-American and have kind of mixed hair. He totally understood how my hair works and what it needs. He explained everything he was doing and all the options my new haircut gave me. He gave me a haircut that works perfectly with my lifestyle. It looks hot down and lovely when I want to pull it up. My hair looks and feels great. I left feeling awesome. And, just to make it clear he was so sweet and friendly and professional. *** So, am I going back? Yes. A great haircut is definately the most important thing, and this was a great haircut! However, I do want to get pampered when I go to a salon. Admittedly, I am not an active Yelper, but felt Safar deserved so much praise I wouldn't feel right keeping my thoughts to myself! I had my first appointment at Safar this past Saturday, and am happy to report it certainly will not be my last! I couldn't be more pleased with my experience here. From the moment I walked in, to the minute I left, I was all smiles. Even though I was running late to my appointment, the receptionists welcomed me with open arms and was still able to fit me in. I was paired up with Amanda, who was so friendly, hospitable, and knowledgeable about the Balayage process. We had some great conversations while she teased and foiled my hair, and checked on me frequently while under the steamer. She repeatedly asked me if I was comfortable, needed water, and even offered me sangria! I appreciated that she consulted with Senior Stylist, Tyzza, when she was washing my hair and toning it. I ended up overstaying my welcome way past the salon's closing time, but Amanda continued to style my hair and did not hurry me out the door. She gave me some tips on products to use for post-care and maintenance and encouraged me to see her again soon (which I 100% will)! I left Amanda a 25% tip because she put so much love and labor into my hair, and the results were nothing short of perfection. Now I have a really short, mousy, layered cut with no style.. Hideous. It needs to be blown and expertly styled, and that is not my style.. and I needed that re-proven to myself? I got my long, heavy, crazy curly hair cut really short by Saul- who helped me pick out the purrfect cut for my hair type and face shape. I have been to Safar before and liked my haircuts. Being a student in Boston it was great to find a place close to school,and relatively affordable. On my most recent visit I asked for a trim, and to maintain the integrity of the haircut I had gotten just a few months ago. Instead of just taking off an inch - an inch and a half Omid chopped off over 3 inches. After the first snip I pointed out how much he had cut and he just said "Oh, honey some pieces need to be a bit longer". By the end of the appointment I was enraged. To add insult to injury he kept saying I was cute and could pull it off. I didn't want to "pull it off" I wanted a simple trim. Overall, I would not go back especially to Omid who really did not seem to care that he just was scissor happy. Furthermore, he did nothing to keep the style I had had prior. Had a really good waxing experience here when my regular couldn't take my last minute appointment. Tanya, I believe (i hope) is her name, and she was very good and made me very comfortable as well, along with making the entire process as painless as possible. She didn't talk much compared to my regular, but worked just as fast and efficiently and gave advice whenever I wanted it. The space was very neat and clean. My only gripe is is that she does everything from manicures to eyebrows to waxing and if it's a busy day, you may have to wait a little bit in which case, having an appointment time doesn't make sense. And, I paid $10 more than I usually do for the waxing services, but considering this is on newbury, it definitely was not a bad deal. Overall, a great second option for me now and I would definitely go there again should I not find time with my previous waxer! read more
