The BBQ was fantastic as always fast friendly service and the restaurant has the old school atmosphere which is fun and eclectic. Now the coconut pie on the other hand is indescribably delicious as a matter of fact it's so good it makes me want to drive out to Forest Hill cemetery. Dig my grandma up and slap her. Slap yo mama good eats. Friday night is the best time to go. I got a pound of pork which comes with your choice of sauce and buns. I threw in some pie too. I was a happy stuffed guy that evening. Well based on a previous review of smoke flavor we gave it a try. Smoke--none, Rub--none, tender moist ribs-- yes but tasted like a pork toast. Marinated Cole slaw was the only saving Grace for the meal. Potato salad--blah, baked beans-- spicy but that was because of their vinegary sauce. French fries-- frozen blah, jalapeño corn bread--dry, flavorless. We prefer thick less vinegar in our sauces so didn't care for any of the selections. Won't be back and can't recommend. read more

We really loved the food at this spot. Honestly I was a little worried just from the area it was in cause I know back home sometimes places like this in a rough looking area, the food usually be, meh. But, I was really shocked when we got our order! The food was damn finger licking good!! The only reason I gave it a four star was because it was small on the inside and our table wasn't as clean. There was crumbs on our table before we sat down and a little food on the floor around it and our kids said the bathroom wasn't as clean. But honestly, I can't really downgrade the place because it's in a kinda small building so you work with what you got until you get some better! Other wise, the food was definitely worth it!! In were in town for the Moto America event at Barber. We were excited to find a locally owned BBQ restaurant on the web. Walking up to the stand alone building, the awesome smoke smell was a little different from the aroma at TX or FL BBQs because they uses hickory wood as Rusty (the personable owner) informed us. My picky Atlanta dining partner ordered the pork rib tips, marinated (read German style) cole slaw and fries plate. She loved it and said the slaw was her fave. I got the pork ribs w/ onion rings and fried okra sides. Very nice portions. The ribs were crazy good - moist and tender complimented by the rub and heavy hickory smoke flavor. The house made onion rings were perfect - hot . crispy, well seasoned and enhanced with Rusty's spicy BBQ sauce. The fried okra was typical institutional style but nonetheless perfectly executed. Fall off the bone ribs, smoked in simple salt and pepper. Brisket smokiness mixed with soft tender meat was the first impression and we couldn't get enough. The brisket is what brought me back the next day but the following day's batch wasn't as good. The pulled pork was decent but a little lacking in salt and flavor. If you read my reviews, then you know I consider myself a BBQ enthusiast. My reviews are fair, but my expectations are high. I ordered a jumbo bbq sandwich & corn. The sandwich was a decent size with the appropriate amount of meat. The pulled pork was decent. The taste was fine. I couldn't taste any smoke. It didn't come with slaw (prefer slaw on my sandwiches). The bbq sauce was ok. I didn't realize the corn was actually corn on the cob. It was okay--typical boiled corn on the cob. All in all, it was ok. You're probably not going to go out of your way, but it was fine. read more

I have lived in this area my entire life and have never given Rusty's a shot....after today I am so mad at myself that I had never been there. Today, I called in my order. I didn't need the menu because I knew what my main entree would be (pulled chicken, no bun) except for the sides. The employee who answered the phone was so helpful and was able to make suggestions on sides (and which one were her favorites). She suggested the Mac and cheese and the fried okra so I ordered those which can be hard to do at most restaurants and my standards are pretty high because they are my favorites. I wasn't disappointed. The chicken was tender and already came with some type of house sauce drizzled over top with pickles. I'm not a fan of pickles but in this situation the contrast between the pickles, sauce, and chicken was top notch. I gobbled it up quickly. The fried okra was probably my favorite thing I ordered. It was the perfect amount of crisp and didn't get soggy even though I had about a 10 minute drive back home. Also, the portion size of the okra was quite large (I wasn't mad at all about that). The Mac and cheese had more flavor than I was expecting. Most places that do Mac and cheese are disappointing and very bland and I usually don't order ever again, but that's not the case with Rusty's. It was packed with flavor, had the perfect consistency, and I would order buckets of that stuff. Overall, this place is a true gem in Jefferson County and could even hold its own (if not even surpass) against their big competitors like Saws, Full Moon, and Dreamland. Rusty's was our daughter's choice for her wedding reception/meal. They traveled 2 hours to the venue and had everything set up and ready to go. The food was delicious, from the ribs to the chicken to jackfruit for the vegetarians (got a lot of positive comments). There was a choice of their 4 bbq sauces: regular, sweet, spicy and white - something for everyone. The deviled eggs were scarfed up, as were the sides (Conecuh sausage in the greens and baked beans were a nice spicy touch). Instead of a groom's cake, had their key lime and peanut butter pies - excellent choices! Rusty and his crew were great to work with, went above and beyond, and provided a meal to remember. I will be returning to Rusty's Bar-B-Q. On this day I only got 2 pound of their pulled pork to go. I did ask if this was available sliced and I got the maybe I don't know look so I did push it as it was busy. This came with only 8 buns and sauce (no pickles) naturally when I get home I discover I also figure out I have no pickles. Now that's aggregation. Who eats BBQ Sandwiches without Pickles? I'm going to but a huge jar so this does not happen again. The pulled pork was good. But I've always preferred sliced. I had my own sauce, beans and broccoli salad and the whole meal was really good. Was very excited to try this spot after reading great things about it. Overall review: the best dishes include the marinated slaw, spicy beans, the smoked chicken, and smoked sausage. -Smoked chicken: very tender and juicy, paired well with the white sauce. Although alone it was tasty. - pulled pork: the pork was dry, I do wish there was a bit more flavor to it. -tips: these were actually pretty good. Could be less dry - ribs: - sausage: pretty good, though if it was a bit more smoked that would've really added a unique flavor - mac and cheese: decent, the MAC was a bit over cooked, therefore softer than I liked. -collard greens: salty, if a little less salt was used it would've tasted just as good. Though if you pair it with one of the drier meats everything balances out - spicy beans: one of my favorite parts. Loved the beans!! -marinated slaw: loved this side as well. It was not too vinegary, had a sweetness to it that I liked -creamy slaw: there wasn't really a taste to this one - key lime pie: loved it. Stopped by Rusty's today after leaving Barber Motorsports Park to see what Leeds, AL had to offer for lunch. My friend and I each had the brisket with collard greens and fried okra. The brisket is served dry and you add whatever sauce you prefer at the table. The meat was so tender no knife was required and it was chocked full of flavor. The collards were super flavorful without being salty or greasy; perhaps the best I've ever tasted. The fried okra was great, especially after my adding some hot sauce. After our entrees we chose to sample a couple of ribs each and they were on par in terms of excellence with the brisket. Having found out from our waitress that the desserts are made in-house, we ordered a peanut butter pie (the waitress' favorite) and a coconut custard pie. Both of these were incredible All in all, Rusty's Bar-B-Q is fantastic! I had the chance to meet Rusty before leaving and thanked him for attention to culinary details and I told him that I can't see how he can improve on the food he serves. What a find! I'll start with the sweet tea was good. The chocolate pie was ok. We ordered a rib sandwich which had three small end bones, a pork sandwich, and a chicken baker. The sandwiches were just ok and the chicken baker was small and very unappealing. I wish we would've spent the 45 bucks at Buccees instead. If you like vinegar based sauce maybe you will like Rusty's. I'm sad to say I've definitely had better bbq. Im glad someone likes it based on the reviews but we didn't like it at all read more

Finger lickin' good. That phrase was definitely made up by someone who had just eaten at Rusty's! I don't know that for a fact, but I'm pretty sure this is where it originated. We stopped by today after a long day of shopping and this place was exactly what we were looking for. It definitely has that hometown feel as soon as you walk through the door. You look around and there are families and old men with styrofoam cups chatting everywhere! I don't know what that says to you, but to me that means good eating goes down here. My husband and I both decided to go with sandwiches and mac and cheese. He got the pulled pork and I got the pulled chicken! It was amazing!!! My husband said the pulled pork was really good. He mixed the house BBQ sauce and sweet sauce together on his. I got the white sauce and house sauce on mine. Literally I couldn't stop eating it was so good. Pricey, food wasn't hot and barely warm, some of the pulled chicken was on the tough side. Ordered potato with pulled chicken, white sauce on the side. Potato came with small amt of American cheese and chicken. $9 and it was not a big smoking hot with everything on it potato. We all were disappointed. Not going back. read more
