This place has been popping up recently on my searches, so I had been wanting to try it out and finally got a chance to do so. I'm glad I did. The inside is definitely bigger than what you think it will be when you first see the location. The register was getting a little backed up, so they brought out someone with a tablet who helped form a second line and get the backlog cleared up quickly. Staff were friendly and checked on us often while we were eating, including bring an extra plate so we could share / sample the other's food. The poutine fries with brisket were really good. The wings are fantastic, my dad got them with buffalo sauce. They have a great fry on them. I'm not a big fry person, but these came out so fresh, hot, crisp, with that perfect Lawry's flavor. I am a major fan of the brisket and pulled pork tacos. These are a must-try for people looking for Not Your Mama's BBQ. Even on a cool February day, folks were camped outside just to get their BBQ fix. Hadn't heard about this place, so decided to try it after finding it on a google maps search. Pretty good pulled pork plate with collard greens and fries. The plate came out first without fries, but that was because they were currently frying them. The pulled pork was a decent portion, and it had good texture and flavor. The pork temperature was a bit on the cold side, though. The collards were decent. The fries were great, as they came at hot and fresh and in a good portion (I hate when places skimp on fries). One thing that needs to change is not running out of brisket on a Friday night! Anyway , I came here recently to try their burger, since a friend of mine loves it. I arrived after 2ish and was able to find a parking spot easily. For whatever reason- it takes forever to place your order here. I'm not sure what the issue is and seems to be constant problem. So annoying to me. I got the burger (no mayo) extra pickles and I enjoyed. It wasn't the best burger I've ever had. I really like the bun it's served on. The fries were outstanding! My dine in experience was cool. The ring was missing and it was dry which made it sauce dependent. Having lived in Texas for 8 years I learned what brisket is supposed to look like. They are masters at cooking it. However this brisket is the best I've had in Alabama. This place is new so maybe they will keep working on it and get it right. However for $19 the portions are a little small. Juneteenth 2025 and we finally made it to Burning Tree! I went with my family so we tried a number of things. Unfortunately they were sold out of ribs. It was barely 2pm. So that tells me that the ribs must be really good. Across our table, 2 had burgers, a leg quarter plate, pulled pork sandwich and a turkey sandwich. The brisket taco was outstanding. That may be my future go-to item. The burger was delicious but the patty is a bit small. The turkey was tasty. The general manager, Luis, is outstanding. A few colleagues and I arrived around 7:00 p.m. after work, about an hour before closing. The barbecue we initially received was a little dry, but when Luis came over to greet us, he asked how we were doing and how we were enjoying the food. After we mentioned that it seemed a bit dry, he immediately smiled, said, "No problem," and personally had fresh brisket and chicken wings prepared for us to sample. It was absolutely delicious. Could this be, as another reviewer suggested, the best barbecue in Birmingham? I don't know. I'm only here for two days. What I can tell you is that it might be the best barbecue I've ever had. Let me begin with a shout-out to my cashier, Amari, who steered me towards all the best menu items and did not let me miss out on the brisket taco. I got the "pick 2" special with 2 meats (brisket and ribs) and 2 sides (slaw and mac & cheese [which is not on the menu but they do have]) and then proceeded to add a side (collards) and the aforementioned taco. Exactly 6 minutes later, my food was at my table. This is not a full-service place, but that being said staff were circulating relatively often to ask guests if they needed anything. I intended to eat most of my food and take the leftovers back to my hotel. Then I started eating and I swear to god I entered a sort of fugue state and didn't stop until literally everything was gone. The brisket and ribs both had a nice bright pink ring, and the brisket was juicy and flavorful. The ribs looked like they still had the membrane on, and that bothered me for two seconds before I bit into them and never again. I will say, the ribs lean dry, but eating them without sauce seems like a prosecutable crime to me, so that didn't bother me either. Speaking of sauce, this one was a nice balance of sweet, a touch of heat, and a really pleasant kick of black pepper. The tortilla on the taco is DRY RUBBED, which is honestly a revelation and I'm mad I didn't think of it. I would pay money for the pickle recipe. The mac and cheese is baked and you get a nice mix-in of the crackly topping cheese. The coleslaw is fine-chopped and that black pepper kick shows up again here. For my week leading up to my birthday, I decided to try restaurants that have been on my "to-go" list. First up was Burning Tree Smokehouse. Upon entering I saw the owner who was very friendly and said the cashier will take good care of me. I didn't know what to order, so a few customers favorites were suggested. I haven't had a burger in a while so I opted for the brisket burger, baked beans and fries. The burger comes with cheese, grilled onions and pickles (I think). It's giving BBQ identity crisis lol. Also, they have zero social media presence. No Facebook. No Instagram. Nothing. Which means this place is running purely on word of mouth. Respect -- but also, get on that ASAP. Great food deserves to be found more easily. I pulled up about 30 minutes after they opened. There were only a few folks inside, which was perfect. The exterior is clean and inviting black and red with some outdoor seating that looks like it could host a solid afternoon hangout. The inside? Definitely BBQ vibes, but with a modern twist. It wasn't chaotic, everything was clean, and the staff was friendly. The cashier greeted me with a big smile and good energy. Hospitality? 9/10, no question. Now, let's get to the food because man, we got some things to talk about. --- BBQ Brisket Cheeseburger Let me start by saying I'm not a huge brisket guy. I'm also picky about BBQ sauce most of it tastes like something squeezed out of a store-bought bottle. I believe good BBQ should stand on its own, with sauce as the supporting actor, not the star. So when I say I loved this burger, I mean it. From the first bite to the last, it was fire. The brisket wasn't dry, the burger was well-cooked and seasoned, and that sauce? That sauce was saucing. I'm convinced it was house-made and I'd buy a whole bottle if they sold it. That said, I'm giving it an 8/10. It could've been a 9, but for the price, the burger should've been a bit bigger. But here's where things took a turn. I ordered Buffalo wings, and while I technically got them, the sauce was struggling. It didn't coat the wings properly. It was almost nonexistent, and the plate was swimming in oil. Like, I'm pretty sure the government would've declared it an oil reserve if they saw it. My hands were shiny like I'd just oiled a car engine. On the bright side, the ranch was excellent probably made in-house, too. If they can fix the sauce situation, these wings are easily a high 8 or even 9. As is? I'm giving them a 7.9/10. --- The Salad (yes, we're going there) So... the salad. It was fresh, crisp, and tasted fine. No complaints about the actual ingredients. But who made the executive decision to serve it in a cup? You can't shake it, mix it, or even dig in without making a mess. I had to dump it onto one of my trays just to dress and mix it properly. It felt more like a DIY project than a side salad. Pro tip: just put it in a bowl or at least something mixable. I'm giving it a 5/10 strictly based on inconvenience. --- Final Thoughts This place? Definitely worth checking out. I'll be back just for the burger alone. The staff is great, the food has serious potential, and the small issues they have are totally fixable. It's a Black-owned business with a promising future, and I genuinely hope it sticks around for the long haul. Oh -- and side note? Had to say it twice because once is simply not enough. I Found this place on Yelp thank you family!!! This place was packed when I walked in and one look around told me everything I needed to know. I love the setup with the paper menu written right on the front window. Easy to update and it gives the whole place an authentic, no-frills feel that fits perfectly. I was originally going back and forth between the brisket sandwich and just getting straight brisket, but Ashley stepped in and guided me toward the four brisket tacos. Best decision I made all day. The brisket was incredibly tender. The sauce is a perfect combination of their house-made blend, salsa, and barbecue, and that squeeze of lime on top? Airtight. That lime brought the whole thing together in a way I was not expecting. The lemonade was cold and refreshing and complemented the meal perfectly. Service was five stars. Food was five stars. SO picked me up from work for lunch. Since Burning Tree is close to where I work, we decided to give it a try. Parking is easy, so a definite plus. The visit had an interesting twist though, more on that later. The restaurant is cute with both inside and outside seatings. It's ordering at the register, get your own drinks, food delivered by number signs, and clean up after yourself. The tables are cool as the tabletops are made of different wood and they label the wood used. Looked to be mostly hardwood and some slightly more exotic. I appreciated them as my parents used to be in the hard wood industry. We ordered a chicken plate and the brisket fries. Got our drinks and then sat down to wait for our food. When the employee delivered our food, she accidentally knocked over my SO's drink. It spilled all over the table ONTO HIS LAP and his chair. So he jumped up and his shorts were all wet, along with wet table, wet chair, and wet floor. The employee said: "Oh, sorry" in the most uncaring way and just WALKED AWAY like nothing happened! No checking on the customer that she spilled the drink on, no offer to help clean up the table, nothing. Honestly, it wasn't a big deal as luckily he doesn't have to go back to work like I do, but we were both flabbergasted by the complete lack of concern the employee showed after spilling a drink all over somebody! In addition, the food delivered wasn't quite right. Constructive feedback to Burning Tree - train your employees on how to handle accidents! Accidents happen, no problem, but how you handle it is everything in the service industry! Also, train the employees to check at the time of delivery to at least ask if the order delivered is correct. I had the highest expectations coming here! I was excited to support the business. And I would still come back however I wasn't as impressed as I hoped. When our party of 4 got there no one really greeted us or acknowledged us. They could have just been busy with other things. Best bbq in BHM and yes the brisket tacos are the absolute bomb. Everything was great though, ribs, wings, beans.

The chicken wings were great, best part of the meal by far. I would come here just for the wings. Pork taco was ok, fries and baked beans were decent. The rib sandwich was good, not worth the trip but good if you are there. The slaw was pretty bad, not a lot of flavor. The brisket was absolutely terrible, horrible quality meat, no smoke flavor, tasted like a bottom shelf cut of roast beef we couldn't even eat it. Service was very fast and friendly, food came out fast. The place is nice but a little small, you really got to squeeze between the tables and chairs to get around. If you go there just get the wings otherwise pass on the whole place. read more
