I was recently in the 'Ham for an UAB event and stumbled upon University Tacos. The vibe is somewhat of a funky cool fast food interior, but this place is well cared for and spotlessly clean. The service was pleasant and quick. The food here is truly a cut above!! I had the steak quesadilla and it was excellently prepared and served up hot. My office picked up lunch from here today. We enjoyed street tacos, baria burger, nachos. Everybody enjoyed. Food was still hot by the time it reached our office. Street tacos don't come with sour cream so you have to remember to order that on the side or anything extra that may normally come with a taco. We love University Tacos we get it often. Honestly these are the best tacos in town to me, no debate no question. Just a few tips, if you're going around 11:30-1 they're super busy. So good could take maybe 15 min to get to you, but it's definitely worth it if you have the time. The people are always super nice. They have about 4 tables that seat 4, 4 side tables that seat 2, and one large table that seats 6 I believe. Great street style Mexican food served here. I got a burrito and a taco, and both were excellent and reasonably priced. For some reason, I was expecting the more American style tacos to be served here, but they definitely have the more authentic stuff. There are tons of food spots near my job, but this will always be a go to for me. The service is fast and friendly, the food is amazing, and the prices aren't terrible. I mostly order the steak taco salad. It is a bed of lettuce with tomatoes, grilled bell peppers, grilled onions, cheese, salsa, and ranch. It is all place in a crunchy bowl that is to die for. Fantastic! Short walk from UAB Hospital so came here during lunch. I got the steak nachos minus sour cream & tomatoes. Everything was delicious and a huge helping of chips and steak. I have driven/walked past this place ever since I was in college without having eaten here so I didn't know what to expect. For some reason, I was thinking it would be more like a Chipotle/Moe's and very casual/ grab and go. I came in here yesterday, and it was an actual sit down Mexican Restaurant! The signage and name definitely threw me off as to what the atmosphere would be like. There were a couple of menu items that seemed tasty to me mainly the quesadillas and the nachos. I decided on the steak nachos. Service was very fast and the workers seemed friendly. At the pick up counter, you can watch them make the food in front of you too. As for the nachos, the chips didn't seem that fresh. I did enjoy the lettuce, tomato, queso, salsa, and jalapenos. I placed a pick up order so I did have to add more of my own salsa and guacamole. The steak pieces were also pretty tiny, so I probably would not order their steak again. Overall, it's good to know we have a sit down Mexican restaurant within walking distance to UAB so I can see how they have been in business for so long! read more

Their food is authentic and fresh, everything always extremely flavorful and cooked perfectly. I love their street tacos, served with fresh onion and cilantro, the carnitas and al pastor are my favorite. But the burritos are delicious too and huge. Everything very reasonably priced. As soon as I walked in, there was a line but the customer service is so good that you barely notice it and before you know it, you've ordered and gotten your food. This is one of my favorite restaurants around my place of work! The workers are all super nice and are willing to explain anything about the menu. In non rush times, you get your food pretty quickly. Just know that between 1130-130 is the lunch rush of all the research, hospital and other UAB staff quickly trying to get a meal. I normally get it to go, but there is plenty of seating inside and two outside tables. Also there are a lot of cute sayings and some informational images around the restaurant. As a Latin American it's always hard to find authentic or near authentic Mexican food anywhere in Birmingham so when I ate here for the first time I was blown away by how good and simple these tacos were. If you're looking for the closest thing to getting a taco in Mexico here in Alabama I 100% recommend the selection here. Another massive plus was horchata which for those who don't know is a beverage that I can most easily explain as being plant milk.
