We visited Rojo yesterday for the first time in what seems like ages! It's still funky, eclectic Rojo and makes me think of Nana Funk's and The Nick merged and became a small restaurant it would have the Rojo vibe. Jake and the staff were beyond friendly and kind! The patio was a popular spot with hard walls and heavy duty plastic windows, ample seating despite it being a rare 70 degree Alabama December day. Parking is a slight challenge as it has always been, however there was plenty of street parking out front and around the corner. The restaurant was clean, with a few water spills, and the rest rooms (several are unisex) were clean! We had a party of five adults and two children and helped ourselves to push 4-tops together to make room for everyone. It's order at the back counter to the right of the bar. Pay in advance with a three percent (I think) discount if you use cash. You get a number and they bring your dishes to you. I opted for brunch scrambled eggs platter, best friend had their chicken tortilla soup, we shared guac and chips, hubs had an enchalada, daughter had a tofu/meat substitute quesadilla plate since she is a vegetarian, her hubs got a delicious looking meat sandwich plate and their beautiful children enjoyed chicken fingers and fries from the children's menu. The music was fun and relaxing (think early Stevie Nick's) and at a volume that was just right for conversation. We appreciated the kind staff, great dishes, and eclectic relaxing environment for our post Christmas get together. Reservations were not required. Thanks Rojo for delivering since 2002! read more

We arrived 8:30pm on a Wednesday and it was hard to find street parking. Everything right outside was full. There was some open spots at the end of the street. There are lots of outdoor seating, but we chose to sit inside because of the heat and it was quieter inside. We ordered at the counter. The menu is huge! Lots of options because it's double sided with a Latin side and American side. We opted for the Burrito bowl (no cheese to modify for vegan / plant-based diet), Summer Burrito, and Pepper Quesadilla. They were all delicious and flavorful. The employee who took our order was super friendly. There is a cash discount (vs paying with credit card). read more

We came here for some Cinco de Mayo shenanigans. It wasn't crowded but eventually the crowd picked up quickly. They had drink specials on margaritas. The normal Latin/ American food menu was available. I ordered chicken fajitas; they actually were decent and I enjoyed them. I did have to add some extra seasonings to enhance the taste a little. Portion sizes were substantial. I had leftovers. I also had the Kip's dip. I didn't love the margaritas but weren't horrible. The staff had fun / upbeat demeanors. Despite it being busy. Walking into Rojo for the first time, I couldn't help but enjoy the quaint, yet edgy atmosphere - suitable for a nice brunch after church. My order off the brunch menu was the breakfast sandwich which was equipped with fluffy scrambled eggs, thinly slice avocado, miles jalapeño bacon, and a smooth (classic) slice of American cheese. This combination sitting between a pearly white buttered bun made for an exquisite culinary venture for a fasted brunch. Normally getting something as simple as a breakfast sandwich can have its drawbacks because it is a dish anyone, anywhere can make. Purchasing such a sandwich and giving it a stellar review means I personally thought it exceeded my expectations. Sometimes, the simple ingredients of life are the ones we need most. I'd suggest sitting outside when the weather permits and prepare to possibly smell a hint of coffee in the dungeon bathrooms deep inside the building. Overall, I'd deliver Rojo at solid 8/10. Not strong enough to break into the vaunted 9 tier but certainly a strong overall performance. read more

Pet friendly restaurant open til 10pm on Sunday. I'd give them a 3.5 if I could - mainly bc it is pet friendly. Seems like a self service type of restaurant. We arrived around 8:30pm and waited in line quite sometime to get some menus. We were sitting outside and had to walk back inside to order our food and refill our drinks. I found a butter knife on the ground near my seat which was concerning considering we were dining with our dog. We started with chips and queso, then I got street tacos and my partner got a burrito bowl. The queso was very runny/watery. I asked for no onions in my tacos. With minimal outdoor lighting it was hard to see the onions littered in my tacos. I was infuriated with every crunch of the onion I thought I picked out of my food. The tacos should have double tortilla bc they ripped apart with the first bite. Not the meal I was looking forward to after a long day. Stopped here on our way to PA and I was pretty bummed that it was a big miss. My dinner definitely looked better than what it tasted. It was quite a unique dining experience since they don't really wait on you. You just order at the counter and hope for the best after that. No checking up if the food was good or needed anything. Their nacho dip was straight water, no thickness or creaminess at all. It was like they heated up a broth and dropped shredded cheese in it to melt. I was looking forward to eating here and it simply missed all the marks. It's more of a college vibe to get drinks but food was not it, at least ours anyway. The good thing about here was that we were able to have our dog with us for dinner after a looooooooong drive. Not much lighting if you are sitting at the tables near sidewalk closer to the street. Pretty twinkling lights over the all season, covered, outdoor seating, looking out onto the park. But with QUESO! Rojo is a unique combination of Latin and American fares. I usually stick to the Latin side of the menu, and this time I opted for the fried fish tacos. Perfectly crispy, tasty accoutrements. The queso is quite thin, which I like but I'm sure there are some dairy purists out there who wouldn't. The have a projector playing movies. I was here on Valentine's Day and they were playing some nice rom-coms to glimpse at as you stand in line. This is just a fun spot to be, in one of the sweetest walking areas of Birmingham. It sure helps that it's just a couple blocks away from me. You don't get to be a neighborhood staple easily, so Rojo is definitely doing some things right. Very impressed with this place as a new resident to bham. I got a burger with a side of tots and it was very good. My dad got the chicken fajita which he said tasted really good, but I was a little unimpressed with the presentation as I feel like it should come out on a sizzling skillet. I came here to meet a friend and was pleasantly surprised by this neighborhod restaurant. Street parking was easy down the street as this is across from a park nestled in the middle of a nice neighborhood. It is an order at the counter and get a number type of place and there is plenty of seating, both indoors and out. The patio is large and great for people watching. We ended up at a sidewalk table, which was equally as great for people watching. We actually sat down forst as there were many open tables on this weekday evening. We chatted for awhile before ordering and it was not a problem at all. The menu has both Mexican and American dishes and it was hard to choose. I got the chips and salsa to start, which were great and a decent amount, easily sharable. For my entree, I got the steak burrito and it was tasty, except that it was ground beef and not actual steak. Quick eats with a lively atmosphere! There's something for everyone on the menu here. The menu is HUGE, containing a Latin, American, kids, and gluten free menu with lots of different dishes on each. You order at the counter and seat yourself. Our food came out very quickly! We ordered the Al pastor tacos and the burrito bowl. I was in town for a family event and my son recommended this spot for brunch. The brunch is something they only offer on the weekends, from what I was told. We had a party of ten and sat outside on the patio. This is not an upscale or classy location that you'd expect in the gorgeous Birmingham area it's located in. But I really loved the vibe! I can imagine what a cool spot it must be at night time with the spirits flowing and the atmosphere. The brunch menu didn't offer an awful lot of options but we all got something we really enjoyed. I had the brunch sandwich, which my son recommended. It has jalapeño bacon and avocado. Need I say more?! It was so yummy! What I was impressed with was how incredibly fast our food arrived! We had no sooner ordered our food, paid for it, grabbed our drinks and sat down on the patio before the food arrived! All the servers were hardworking and pleasant. Hadn't been to Rojo in a while so I met a friend here a couple of weeks ago while they were heading back to their city from the airport. I had the cashier choose her favorite tacos and she selected the Berkely Tacos. Didn't even care to read what it was, but I was happy with what I received at my table. Who wouldn't like a hot wingish type of taco? The rice and beans weren't particularly great. Rice was mushy and the beans were your average beans. It was a beautiful day to sit on the patio. I came here on a weeknight to meet up with some friends coming into town for the holidays, and we all had pretty good reviews of our food. There was plenty of seating and the staff was friendly. When you enter, you place your order at the counter and then pick any table you'd like to sit at. The patio was heated and had cute Christmas lights everywhere so we decided to sit outside. A hidden gem placed amongst the trees. This place is like a little secret eating spot. Plenty of outdoor seating with indoor seating available. The food is fresh and not overly processed. There is an American and Latin menu available. The menu prices are reasonable. The southwest quesadillas were delicious! My husband and I had a date night on yesterday. We decided to stop by Rojo since it's been a while. There was a small crowd, but we were able to sit inside. After looking at the food and drink menus for a moment, we were ready to order. My husband went to the front and placed our order. We received our drinks almost immediately. My jalapeño margarita was just the right amount of spicy! It was delicious. Our food (taco wings, fries, and paella) came out nice and hot. We both had leftovers, which will make a good lunch today. It's had been awhile since we visited Rojo. We decided to visit because of their Birmingham Restaurant Week special, and ended up going two nights in a row because it was so good. My favorites were their pineapple salsa, queso, strawberry margaritas and their vegetable quesadilla. Due to COVID, they are currently only seating people outside. You are not allowed to go inside. Because of this, the seating is very limited, but we were able to get a table quickly even with our party of 5. Regarding service, you order at a window, they bring your food to you and you bus your own table. Both nights, the food was delicious, and I had plenty for leftovers which is my favorite. This restaurant is in a great walking neighborhood with a park across the street. It is definitely worth a visit. read more
