Really cool restaurant with beautiful decor and a bright, welcoming atmosphere. They started us off with complimentary chips and salsa, and the salsa was top notch for me; it tasted incredibly fresh! I also tried the queso and was expecting the typical thin, white cheese sauce you get at a lot of Mexican restaurants. Nope! This was thick, creamy, little spicy with the jalepeno, just absolutely delicious. For my meal, I ordered the pozole verde, which came with a huge cheese quesadilla that was about half the size of a dinner plate. Everything had such vibrant, flavorful seasoning, and the portions were extremely generous. I also had the watermelon margarita, which was delicious and definitely potent . No complaints there! Best Mexican food in Birmingham... We've been on the hunt for good or even great Mexican food since moving from California several years ago. De Nada is the closest we've found to traditional Mexican food!! La Casa margs were perfect - not too sweet. Complimentary chips and salsa were great - salsa was spicy and fresh. Chicken Mole enchiladas - YES!! So much food. But YES! Beef floutas - not something we typically would order but will order again!! This isn't like all of the other local Mexican places with queso covering everything on the plate... in the BEST ways. Real Mexican flavor on every plate. On top of that - service was great. I have been wanting to try this place and I'm so glad we did! The ambiance was amazing inside. I loved the lighting and the look of the place. The food was good in my opinion. You get a huge portion and the prices aren't that crazy for a downtown spot. I had the short rib enchiladas and the flavor was great. I wish the short rib was more tender. There were some pieces inside that were tough and dry and some that wet really fatty. I was hoping that the short rib would be finely shredded, but mine had a lot of chunks in it. Absolutely wonderful first visit with sis in law! Loved the attention to detail in the space, the music that was just loud enough to have conversation yet still enjoy the happy instrumentals, the both bright and muted colors and beautiful mural in the back - the entire restaurant was adorable, and much bigger than we thought before stepping inside. Service and food was even better! Owner attentive to guests and walking throughout restaurant, even asking staff to fix a wobbly table before seating guests at it. Pictured is Carolina's Enchiladas, chips and salsa. Docked a star because sis in law did not enjoy her margarita; the frozen margarita machine was not at its best today so got her marg on the rocks instead but it lacked luster. Was greeted immediately upon entering; hostess was friendly. We were first seated at a booth, moved to the bar. The booths are TIGHT. Chips and salsa are free. We ordered the trio dip which consisted of queso, guacamole, and ground beef with cheddar and crema. I've been excitedly waiting for De Nada to open, and every minute was worth it! The inside is so cozy and warm, and the food is heavenly! From classic Tex-Mex options to dishes with elevated spin, De Nada's menu is nothing short of spectacular. I already know this will be a spot that I frequent when I'm in downtown Birmingham. What we ordered: Pollo con Mole- you can't go wrong with this classic dish. Every ingredient paired well with one another, and the sauce was delicious. Mahi Mahi- the avocado lime dressing was so good, I had to ask for more on the side. The mahi was seasoned to perfection and left me full all night. Okay, let's start with the aesthetics. This place is gorgeous, down to the little folders your check comes in at the end. They clearly paid attention to the details. The service was a bit spotty, but that's somewhat expected for a brand-new restaurant. There were two things that stood out, though: we asked for lime wedges for the tacos, and they were brought out in someone's bare hands instead of on a plate or napkin, which was off-putting. Also, our server asked if the food was "fully cooked"... which, I mean, I would certainly hope so lol. The appetizers (queso, salsa, and patatas bravas) were definitely the highlight - super flavorful and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the entrees (chimichanga and steak street tacos) didn't quite measure up. The steak was chewy, and overall the dishes were lacking flavor. The pineapple agua fresca, though? Absolutely fire. Overall, I'd be willing to give this place another shot, but I'll probably wait 6 months to a year to let them work out the kinks. read more

My husband and I went on a Saturday night for dinner and drinks. Firstly, the restaurant is beautiful-- they put a lot of effort into the details. We sat at the bar so, while the initial greeting was slow, service was reasonably good after that. The margaritas and palomas were very good. We had the dip trio for an appetizer and liked all the dips. The queso was pretty standard. Guacamole was surprisingly good-- I was worried at first because it wasn't as chunky as I like, but it was fresh and the flavor was on point. For entrees, we got the plantain nachos and the pollo con mole. My nachos came out a good bit before my husband's mole, and I was almost done eating by the time he got his food. I thought maybe it was because my entree was technically an appetizer, but I noticed the same thing happened with the couple next to us. The mole was the best I've ever tried. I normally don't care for it because it's almost always too sweet, but theirs is a perfect balance of flavors. We had tres leches cake and churros for dessert. The tres leches cake was fantastic. The churros were a little dense, but very good. They are fresh made, not frozen, which is hard to find locally. Update: Hubs and I went back a week or so later at lunch time. We tried to sit at a table, but the service was bad/nonexistent so we moved to the bar. We had chicken tinga nachos, and the chicken tinga was well seasoned and flavorful. All in all, we've been happy with the food, although it's expensive. The table service isn't great, so I think the place is ideal for drinks and apps at the bar. read more

De Nada, a newly opened spot (just 2 weeks ago), offers a warm, rustic atmosphere that feels like home, combined with great service despite a few team members not showing up for work. Birmingham's newest hotspot! Upscale Mexican is exactly what the Parkside district has needed, and we didn't even know it until now. I got the Chile Relleno with chicken. Excited to finally check out this new restaurant that has been receiving some good reviews. It is described as an upscale-casual Mexican kitchen located in the Birmingham Parkside area... street parking only. It's a nicely renovated airy warehouse space with some vibrantly painted walls and a bar along the right side of the restaurant that is partially obstructed by a decorative wall that seems to separate the areas. It is indeed casual, but upscale is definitely a stretch. To start, our server, while nice, was no more than a food runner. Nothing about her initial interaction with us or energy made it feel like we had made a wise choice to dine here. She didn't try to engage us or even ask if it was our first visit or tell us anything about the restaurant, the food or even why it is supposedly a unique Mexican dining experience. Anyway, chips were rapidly brought to the table by the "chip runner" along with a small bowl of salsa to share and water. The chilled salsa, seemed freshly made and was good enough. After that, she was ready to take our drink orders and quickly returned to take our entree choices. We decided on Camila's Special Plate, which is a version of an entree we frequently enjoy at our favorite local Mexican restaurant. It's rice, grilled chicken or steak, bell pepper, grilled onion, queso blanco and cilantro. Portion sizes are generous, even though the price of this dish is twice the amount you'd pay at other Mexican restaurants in the area. I suppose that's why they call it upscale. Oddly enough, there wasn't much rice and an abundance of chicken, which made for an unbalanced dish. Everything here is just fine, but not special. Considering it is a new restaurant that just opened a few weeks ago, one might've expected a manager or owner to stop by the table to say hello and see if we needed anything or at least help to clear the tables so we didn't have to stare at dirty plates and glasses at the table next to us. I checked this place out on a whim driving through Birmingham. Being a restaurant in downtown Birmingham, it's easy to expect the parking to be horrible. That's not the restaurant's fault. The service was pretty normal. I was seated promptly. The waitress checked in regularly. The atmosphere was ok. Nice lighting. Now the best part. The food! I got chips and salsa, Chile relleno, and Martinez margarita. The salsa tasted incredibly fresh. You can tell it was made that day. Incredible taste. The Chile relleno was one of the best I've had in a long time. The freshness was superb, the presentation beautifully, and the taste heavenly. Went with my coworkers to try this new upscale Mexican spot and we were all impressed. The chips were light and not greasy, the salsa was fresh and bright. I was excited to try thr Pollo mole and it was one of the best moles I have tried. The sauce was deep and rich and savory and the tortilla was freshly made and warm. Also tried the ribeye torta and it was also a hit. The fries actually were skin on potatoes and had a unique seasoning that I loved. Other coworkers tried steak enchiladas, burritos, chicken quesadilla and everyone agrees we would be back. The only thing we did not like was the queso bc it was a bit too thin. It is upscale so actually pretty pricy compared to traditional Mexican places but the quality shines and it is vastly superior to the million standard Mexican places around town. I would say it is comparable to el Royale but we all agreed that it was better. The service was knowledgeable and gave us great recommendations bc we always ask lots of questions. I came to try this new restaurant while celebrating graduation from UAB with my family. From the moment we arrived, I expected a bit of a wait since the restaurant is pretty small, and we were a party of six. While we waited, I noticed the atmosphere was actually really nice, with a beautiful altar of La Virgen de Guadalupe and music playing softly in the background, which added a welcoming touch. Once we were seated, we were served the usual chips, salsa, and queso. Unfortunately, this is where things started to fall short. The salsa was very watery, literally water with no vegetables, and the chips themselves were a bit too oily. The queso had a similar issue being that it lacked flavor and very liquidy. I honestly would have preferred store bought casa mamita queso instead. I had been really excited to try their horchata espresso martinis, but they haven't received their liquor license yet. On top of that, our waitress let us know they were already sold out of most of their aguas frescas and mocktail options, which was disappointing. For my meal, I ordered the chicken fajitas after seeing on Instagram that they make their tortillas by hand. The food did take a while to come out, but given how busy they were, I expected that. When it finally arrived, everything was hot, which I appreciated, but the chicken lacked seasoning. The tortillas were just okay. They could've used a bit more salt, and I personally prefer them a little flatter. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. The prices are too high for the portion sizes, which were on the smaller side, and the service didn't stand out in a positive way either. As a Mexican American, I have a strong sense of how these dishes traditionally taste, even with slight variations or creative twists.
