This is authentic Mexican food. Period. No "Mexican-inspired." No watered-down version designed to make everybody happy. No menu trying to be all things to all people. Just real Mexican food, done the real way. I ordered the steak rare, and they actually delivered it exactly as I asked. That may not sound like a major accomplishment, but getting a strip steak cooked properly to rare is not always as easy as it should be. This one was done right. The sauce was just right, and the salsa tasted fresh. Not like something that had been poured out of a jar and given a Mexican name. You can taste the difference when something is made in-house. And that's really what stood out about Las Garzas. The food tasted real. Fresh ingredients. Properly prepared. No unnecessary gimmicks. Just good food made the way it's supposed to be made. Me gusta la comida mexicana. There is a large Latin American community along Lorna road in Hoover, and this Is one of several Mexican restaurants in the area. At dinner time there is always a festive atmosphere here. For better or worse, it is very loud and the music is cranked up. The full service bar is popular, and they serve traditional Mexican cocktails like the Michelada and plenty of Margaritas. Lack of staff is not a problem here. On this busy Friday night there were multiple wait staff serving our table of five. In addition to our waitress, we had different staff replenishing chips and salsa, delivering our drinks, and clearing our table. It was refreshing to see the teamwork. The menu is very large, and it includes everything you might expect and more. I like that they offer authentic Mexican dishes that you won't see at most "Americanized" Mexican restaurants. For example, tonight I had three street taco with campechano. Campechano is a combination of asada (steak) and chorizo (Mexican sausage). Street tacos are topped with chopped onion and cilantro. Simple and delicious. The portions are big, and especially the burrito. It is the biggest burrito I have ever seen! read more

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants is Taqueria Mexico. Tonight my friends and met up there, only to discover it's no longer Taqueria Mexico--The restaurant is now called Las Garzas. I recognized the staff waiting tables--the same crew from the prior establishment. The menu is no longer umpty pages long. It's just 4 pages, which made me worry they'd removed some items. It looks like most of the food from the old menu is on the new one, only minus all the photos and detailed descriptions. I did see that the queso fundido is no long on the menu. Instead they have "cheese dip" which is NOT the same thing. Also missing is the Hawaiian ribeye, which I guess makes sense, since Hawaii is about as far from Mexico as you can get, but dang it, it was so good! We asked our server if we could still get the queso fundido. She said, yes, but I don't think she ever understood that we were actually ordering it, as it never came out. Sadness descended on our table. I wanted the Pollo a la Parilla, the mesquite grilled half chicken that I've ordered several times before. I didn't see that on the menu but they had "grilled chicken." I assumed that was the same thing. It wasn't. Turns out I'd ordered sliced chicken breast over salad greens with slices of avocado. It tasted well enough, but it was nothing like the mesquite grilled chicken I was used to. More sadness. The combo plate (traditional Tex Mex) was fine, and the sopes were okay, but not good enough to overcome the Table Sadness. I'm not saying we'll never be back, but this is no longer my favorite Mexican restaurant. There are other favorite dishes from the old Taqueria Mexico that I want to keep getting, assuming they made it to the new menu. read more

This place surprised me. The food was excellent. I had to double check myself and went through a basket and half of the chips and salsa. Then I proceeded to get an al carte cheese enchilada and the Texas Fajita, which is steak, chicken, shrimp with green peppers and onions. It was magnificent. Plate had a small helping of rice and beans. I was able to muster up enough room to have churros and ice cream. The medium frozen margarita was solid and enjoyed it to the last drop. The is friendly and take care of their customers very well. I will return. read more

This is my favorite taqueria in town. They have Tex Mex favorites but the real strength is the tacos and tortas. The restaurant is spotless and the staff are genuinely nice people. Ask for the house made hot sauce. read more

We came to this restaurant expecting to try Taqueria Mexico, but as it turns out it was replaced by Las Garzas. We shrugged and decided to head in anyhow, ready for an adventure. We walked in and found that we were the only customers even though it was prime dinner time. We had a couple of house margaritas, which were tasty. Chips, salsa and cheese dip were simply ok. Prices are outrageous and Highway robbery for what you receive! The shrimp were delicious, but $21 for a skewer of shrimp, one scoop of rice and a smear of beans is absolutely absurd! So we give 3 stars for the delicious shrimp and margaritas, but otherwise this place was a bust for us. Maybe they would have more customers if they gave a better value for the money. I feel bad for the staff because they can't be making any money working here. read more
