The street corn was okay. It had good taste, but overall, it didn't have an authentic flavor to me. There was a bit too much aioli sauce too. The chimichanga was good. Okay, I get it Mr. Food Snob. It probably isn't the most authentic Mexican on the planet, or even in Birmingham. Maybe even Mountain Brook. Totally get that. So now that you've established your foodie creds, now that you've gotten your preening out of the way, let's talk about what La Paz does right. And does so consistently. First thing's first. My wife and kids and I have been coming here for years and have never--I mean never--had a hitch on service or food. The place runs with cool precision normally reserved for commando raids or Japanese car manufacturers. Your butts are barely in the seats and here comes your server with the chips and salsa, ready to take your food order. And when you order, the food arrives in a matter of minutes. Piping hot, the way God intended. What's more, the place is designed to accommodate large parties of people. So if you've got a kids birthday party, a bowling league (Oh, wait. Scratch that. It's Mountain Brook), or just a bunch of friends and family going out for a meal together, LaPaz is ideal for that. A nice mix of people. A couple of notes. If you can possibly stave off hunger until past 7:15 pm, that's when you should go. Before then, you'll have to deal with a lot of kids running amok in the place, not to mention the noise they make. Portions are decent (the soup could be a whole meal), Mexican corn was fresh and well-seasoned and the rice was tasty, but other ingredients seem a bit stale - diced chicken was dry, and blue tortilla strips for the soup lacked fresh crunch. Service was good, and drinks were refilled. The dining room is large with tables well spaced-out, and there's a separate bar area and outdoor tables. Pricing is standard for the area, and won't break the bank. I might try it again at some point, but wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Not the worst Mexican restaurant but definitely not the best! The food is nothing to brag about. I ordered the pick 2 combo and got a half of a chicken chimichanga and beef chimichanga with double rice. It cost $14. I would rate my meal a 6/10. I'd been wanting to try LaPaz in Crestline and finally did. Was not disappointed. I did takeout as treat for me and family. Everyone seemed to like the food. I had the Baja Fish tacos. It's the first time I had fish tacos where the fish was like a small filet vice flaked. You knew how much fish was was in there. Yummy! One family member had the Arizona quesadilla and she ate it all vice leaving half the food, which is what usually happens--guess she definitely liked it. Another person had the chicken quesadilla. He didn't eat it all, but held on to the rest to eat later. The other meal was a Chicken Gordo burrito and he kept saying how good it was. We all liked the chips, queso, and pico de gallo. The chips were light with a nice crunch. Looks like LaPaz is on my food favorites list for the future. read more

After we did the stereotypical American try and get tacos for Cinco De Mayo move, we were denied by the extremely long lines. Then when it came to a recent holiday weekend that is usually surrounded with BBQ and grilling, we were not prepared again. So we decided to make up one fail during another and get tacos. We called a few places. Some were closed. Some were booked up. But finally we found La Paz. It has been a while since I have been here. But it has always been really good to me. They currently have a family taco bar with great mix and match options. But they provide everything you need and more. With two adults and two toddlers, the amount provided was great for two meals. So a lot of food. We even shook it up and did quesadillas instead of tacos for lunch. The meat was well flavored. The tortilla (flour) were fresh. And the fixins were really good too. Great little lunch spot! We had to run to Lamb's Ear for a gift and decided to pop in for lunch. We had the original queso, I had the blue corn nachos without chicken and street corn, and my husband had the Cuban quesadilla. The queso was a bit spicier than we were expecting (we don't handle spicy well), but everything was very tasty. We are outside, and had a wonderful time just relaxing on our day off. I have lived in bham for 6+ years and just ate here!! I know it's crazy (rolls eyes). All my friends/husband love this place but I'm just not a fan. This is a spot that I always have to go to when I'm in town! I adore the blue corn nachos and I get the sangria swirl to accompany it. The queso here is delicious as is the salsa. I love the casual vibe. There are a ton of families and large parties when I'm there. There is also a separate bar area. I usually go for dinner but it looks like they do have a happy hour. My bf and I went to Church Street Coffee and were hungry so decided to cross the street to get some food from here! Boy did we make a good decision! We walk in and it's huge! Not people either. Granted, it was like 5ish in the afternoon on a weekday. They sit us at a table that has walls around us giving us privacy and keeping the other noises and music at a low. We were able to talk to each other without being drowned out by sounds! Crazy I know. So we were there in time for happy hour. We both got margaritas- I got frozen and he got on the rocks. We also ordered cheese dip. The cheese dip was great! Really good. Thick, not like the thin soupy stuff. Tasted fresh. Definitely a second to the goat cheese dip at another local establishment. If you like street tacos, LaPaz is the place to get them. My wife and I usually go the LaPaz in Mt. Laurel. The staff are super friendly and willing to help in any way they can. Oh, did I mention street tacos? My goodness...their tacos are the absolute best. We are looking forward to the opening of the LaPaz in Ross Bridge as that is closer to our house. As it is now, we only go once a month because we have an appointment near the Mt. Laurel area once a month. We will still go then, but we are looking forward to going a little more frequently when Ross Bridge opens. read more

I wasn't able to really eat either of them. My husband got the tacos de pollo and he was able to eat them, but he didn't really like them, again the chicken was super weird tasting. All three tasted very different, but we're not very good at all. Also, the sweet tea wasn't sweet. I thought maybe they gave us unsweet at first, but when they redid them, they tasted the same, just like water. It is a kid friendly place though, and both kids enjoyed their kids meals. Dinner choice for last night because our first choice was booked. There was not a wait in the bar area. For a Friday night, not too bad. Although we waiting a while to be serviced, I could see that the bartenders were actually working so we were patient. For drinks we got the swirls, regular mixed with strawberry. Their margaritas are extremely sweet. To the point that it wasn't worth finishing because it was more sugar and no taste of liquor. For dinner we ordered the burrito and the chicken fajitas. Chicken Burrito was rated a 3.5/5 by him. My chicken fajitas were more of a 2.5/5. The chicken was big and flavorless. Rice and beans were rice and beans. Nothing that made them stand out. Queso was $7. They said chorizo but I only tasted onions and peppers. Not any taste of chorizo. For $7 you would expect more. Anyone from B'ham can tell u how competitive Mexican/Tex-Mex places can be around here. I think the food at La Paz actually beats that of El Barrio and Babalu's. Their margaritas are super strong and come either in the frozen variety like a slushy or the traditional on the rocks style. They give u complimentary chips and two types of salsa. The chicken breast quesadilla is the best quesadilla I've ever had. Hands down! I think their secret is that they don't skimp on the cheese nor chicken. It comes with a white dipping sauce that tasted similar to ranch but was much lighter. I had the guacamole as an appetizer too. It was pretty good, not as creamy as I like it though since they use so much onion. The decor on the inside reminded me of Little Donkey, though it seemed a bit dated. I can see this as a pretty popular place if you're in Mountain Brook and highly recommend it. read more

First off, it was my friend's birthday, and I mentioned to the hostess that it was. The hostess literally just starred at me and continued her conversion with someone else. THEN, the birthday boy who is on a PALEO diet asked for NO CHEESE on his salad. When the server brought out his salad WITH CHEESE he kindly mentioned that he requested NO CHEESE and the server just said "it comes with cheese" and was overall just very rude. The food was subpar and I frankly don't understand why this place is so popular. I really hope they change the attitude of their workers... Me and my friends will never be coming here again. I'm giving this place 5 stars for a few reasons. Service, food, drinks, and overall set up and vibe. I moved here from south Texas, and I know true authentic Mexican, and I know real deal Tex mex. This definitely leans towards Tex Mex though they have some authentic touches. (This is not somewhere I would come for "authentic tacos" and that's okay! I'd prefer any of the Taco trucks around town.) The chicken tinga is the best meat on the menu in my opinion. It's authentic, tender and flavorful. We called the day ahead knowing we had a big party celebrating a birthday and while they don't take reservations, they were very accommodating and said they would do what they can. Everything was wonderful from the time we arrived. The hostess and server were both great. The server let us know she was new, though we couldn't tell, and she was very attentive, checking on us often, refilling glasses, pouring margaritas and bringing fresh chips. She made personal recommendations for us and was patient when we needed a lot of time to look at the menu. Be sure to ask if you want a pitcher of margs that aren't one of the preselected options! We got a pitcher of strawberry margaritas on the rocks and they were great. Tasted very fresh, not overly sweet, and the right strength. On to the food - everything I ate was awesome. I ordered queso to share and the chicken tinga tostadas. The queso was excellent. Had a bit of spice and great flavor. Everyone at the table was initially hesitant to dig in, and was quickly going back for more. Portions are large! I ordered the chicken tinga tostadas and did not even finish half (and I'm someone who loves to eat). The dish had great flavors, was well put together, they didn't skimp on the chicken, and I'm already thinking about when I can go back and get it again. The decor and vibe of the place was really pleasant and family friendly. I will most certainly be back. Service today was fantastic our server was nice, patient and informative. Food was good I ordered the jack cheese and pepper quesadilla (half size) and got a side of rice and beans. Also the queso is AMAZING but overall the food here is good not great and I'm just not sure why. It is a little on the pricier side. So for the half sized quesadilla with small side rice and beans, a Sprite and half of the queso brought me in at about $25 just for me. A lot in my opinion for a more casual Mexican spot but I guess it is in mountain brook. read more
