I decided to try La Barisa in Hoover because of a promo, and honestly it was a really pleasant surprise. They were open on a Sunday with plenty of parking, which was already a good start. We were the only ones there, and they immediately brought out waters and a spicy salsa that was actually really good. To be very honest, it's not a place that after you eat it you would say: "This place is amazing, we need to come back sooner rather than later!" However, nor would you say: "This is so awful, I would never ever eat here again." We ordered steak fajitas and a vegetable quesadilla. Other than the rice that came out cold, the rest of the food came out very hot. Unfortunately, the tortillas are not freshly made in-house though. We also got churros as dessert. The service here was absolutely a 5 star yet the food was actually closer to a 3 star somehow. The food was not bad at all but it was a little plain. The service was friendly and with Mexican food being a favorite cuisine, I thought my burrito was pretty good. I travel a lot for work and I probably get Mexican food more than any other cuisine. I have always found (at least in my opinion) that Mexican restaurants offer the most consistent food over other cuisines. Maybe I got in the habit of eating at Mexican restaurants in this long ago days before Yelp and the internet when you just had to guess and roll the dice if a restaurant was good. Whatever the reason, Mexican food became and is still my go-to cuisine in my frequent business travels. As I said, I enjoyed my burrito was tasty and I enjoyed my overall experience here. read more

Yummmm!!! Ordered the relleno burrito with grilled chicken and the quesadilla dinner the other night for take out with hubz and it HIT THE SPOT! I will say it was exactly what I was expecting which is all I ever ask for! The flavors were simple yet perfect, and everything was executed well. One thing I was upset with is with two dinner entrees we only got 2 tiny little condiment containers of salsa! Maybe I wouldn't have been so upset but the salsa was SO GOOD! I think that it should come with at least the amount you would get sitting at the table if you're getting dinner entrees. The burrito tortilla was super soft and it was filled with guacamole and perfectly grilled chicken. I think I will add lettuce inside next time. The queso was perfect and went amazing with a bite of burrito and the rice on the side. I will order this again and again! The quesadilla was also very tasty and filling. Simple but perfect! Lastly, we did order the carne asada taco and it completely fell apart when I opened it at home (I only live about 5 min away). The tortilla I think was wet maybe in the foil so when I went to pick it up it kind of just melted away. From what I picked at there was great flavor though and it left my fingers smelling like yummy street tacos! Probably won't order this for take out again but would try it if we ate here. There are many Mexican restaurants around town, but this one is on our regularly visited spots. The decor is what you have come to anticipate, and there are some typical menu options such as combo plates. However, I suggest ordering from the entree section of the menu - the Pork Carnitas and Chilaquiles were well seasoned and with the portions being larger in size, it can be challenging to finish in one sitting. read more

Every third Saturday is Cuban night. They have a special menu and live Cuban music. A friend invited us and I am so glad he did! For starters, I had a couple of strawberry margaritas as well as chips and salsa. Next, as an appetizer, were the tamales. For my main meal, I got the pork carnitas, black beans and rice and the sweet plantains. They offered dessert, but after this wonderful meal, I was way to full. The cuban music helped set the mood. There was a wonderful singer and later a DJ. Also people were dancing most of the night. It was an incredible, authentic experience. I will definitely be back! read more

I came here recently for dinner with my family. This is a typical Mexican restaurant. It is located in a strip mall and has indoor and outdoor seating. We ended up sitting inside. We started off with chips and salsa and queso. The salsa was great and I ate a lot of it. The queso was ok. It tasted more like just melted cheese than typical queso, but it wasn't bad. I had the seafood tacos. The concept was really unique, the tacos were deep fried. They had seafood, scallops, and another fish inside them. It came with avocado on the side which I added to the tacos and it gave them a nice flavor. Unfortunately, my fish tasted a little too fishy. My husband had the chicken fajitas. He liked the fajitas but was annoyed that they did not come with cheese, i'm not sure why he didn't just ask for some cheese though. The service here was average. Overall, everything really was average. I would definitely come here again, but I wouldn't be asking to come back. read more

This is one of our family's go-to's. My husband typically gets the steak fajita nachos which, despite the small portion of meat, are pretty tasty. Their guacamole is very good- chunky and flavorful. The salsa varies. Sometimes spicy, usually mild, usually good but occasionally bland. A bright spot is the soup. I frequently get the chicken soup. It's very simple, but oh-so-good. Chicken broth with rice, crushed tomatoes (maybe salsa? ) shredded chicken and avocados on top. Crush up the tortilla cups into it. (Trust me) Atmosphere is typical American Mexican. La Brisa can now safely be added to my list of Mexican joints that I won't avoid. The staff was nice, the salsa was spicy, the margarita was good, and the food was par for the typical Mexican restaurant course. They had a bunch of crazy flavored margaritas, including watermelon and coconut. Sadly, they were pre-made and only came frozen, so I didn't partake. Not that I care about when they were made, I just like my margaritas on the rocks. It is surprisingly spacious inside, with both tables and booths. Tried a couple different Mexican beers they had on tap--Dos Equis Amber, Modelo, and Pacifico I believe. Steal of a deal at $1.99 for a large mug (at least 20 oz. if not 22). I think that deal is daily until 7 PM. The food was great as well--Mexican joints that will substitute black beans for the standard refried always get a plus in my book. It had some interesting vegetables and was fine. The portion was big enough for two meals. The chips and salsa were okay, but the server failed to refill them without prodding. The cheap dip was pretty good. Both my friend and I found the margaritas to be terribly disappointing: Clearly from a mix, with very little lime, and no noticeable alcohol. I can say that the atmosphere is pleasant for anybody. Festive room. It was too cold for us to eat outside on the patio, but it could be quite nice there. Seemed to be plenty of seating. Very nice spit to grab dinner. Wasn't overly crowded and wait staff was attentive. Prices are very comparable and the food was pretty good. They do have outdoor seating available for when the weather is nice. They have a small bar area and a few tvs if you want to catch part of a game. We have frequented this restaurant since moving to Hoover last summer as it is very close to our home. The food is average, but that's not what's causing the low score. The past two consecutive visits were met with extremely poor service. Our most recent visit had us sitting for over ten minutes without a waiter coming to take our order. The moment that made me leave the restaurant was when another family, who came into the restaurant at about minute 8 of our wait, was seated, brought drinks, and had their dinner order taken before ours. I decided I had waited long enough and left. On my way out the door, I politely told the gentleman at the counter why I was leaving. He apologized and told me to have a good night. I would understand if the restaurant was packed and they had limited staff, but there were only two families in the restaurant when we entered, counting us. The family that was seated after us made three. I will not be returning there for another visit. read more

Tried it in July 2014 to compare with Frontera at the Grove, but it just didn't measure up. Pros: Cheese dip was plentiful; hostess was very polite. Cons: Margaritas were very tart and had very little alcohol (didn't try the top shelf one-maybe they're better); bathrooms not very clean; food was nothing special; server was not polite (not rude, just "I don't want to be here" type attitude) - we felt like an inconvenience and had to ask for everything (more water, more chips, more salsa, the check...) Not the worst experience by any means, just not one that'll have me going back any time soon. Drive the extra mile to Frontera, or better yet, the extra 10 miles to Cozumel Grill in Pelham on Hwy 31. read more
