This was absolutely the worst "bbq" I have ever eaten. The BBQ ribs were not bbq'd--they were also not flavorful. The sides (baked beans and collard greens) tasted like they were out of a can with no seasoning added. Wow. Just bad. I should have known to leave when there was only one table clean and no patrons in the restaurant. Ordered smoked wings on a reference of a friend, got home with them and looked forward to digging in, after a few bites we looked at each other and had the same thought... there was a soapy taste to the wings. Greatest BBQ in the State! We have it several times when we are at the Logan Martin Lake where we have a house. Summers are better with BBQ. These guys do it right. This place has been our go to BBQ place for my wife and I for several years. They used to be in a gas station and our joke to friends up north was that one of the best places in town for food was a gas station. I have always been leary of food from gas stations. Just in my mind, I just always had the sense it was either 2nd rate, or the thought of cooking and eating food in a gas station was not very sanitary. After seeing all the 5 star Yelp reviews, I had to give Butts To Go a try. My experience did not start off well. I came to the counter to order and the lady behind it seemed either in a hurry at best or just annoyed at worst. I'm thinking she just assumed I knew what to do. On the counter to the side, was a warmer that contained already made up ribs and BBQ sandwiches. There was no sign or anything like that to communicate to me that if you wanted a sandwich or ribs, just grab it out of the warmer. The other staff was more helpful and friendly. I chose the 2 rib plate plus I grabbed a pork sandwich. The rib plate came with 2 sides and was $6.99 and the sandwich was $3.49. With a 20 oz drink, I paid $11 something. What a great deal and value! I might have only had 2 ribs but they were a good size. The ribs were good - good rub, fresh, and mostly tender. However, they were over done at the ends. The pork was better than the ribs - very tender, fresh, and mixed well with the sauce. When I eat here again, I'm going to get the pork plate. There were 2 sauces - Cattlemen's and Hog Heaven. Cattlemen's is a brand, kethcup-based, and had a very smooth and mild, smoky flavor. I liked the Hog Heaven better. It was sweeter than the Cattlemen's but also more spicy, but there isn't much heat to it at all. During parts of the year, they have Archibald's and Rob's sauce. My 2 sides today were potato salad and baked beans. The potato salad was the baked potato type with sour cream and chives. I always enjoy that type. The beans were pretty good. They definitely were homemade and not like Bush's from a can. I added some Hog Heaven and chopped onions to it and it made them better. My first BBQ in a gas station, overall, was a very good experience. The food was really good and very reasonable. Personally, I like Fat Man's the best in Pell City still and Good Ole Boys. But Butts To Go is worth stopping in and trying, especially for the price. read more

We ate here on a Saturday for lunch. The 'restaurant' is in a gas station. There are 3 tables for you to dine if you'd like, we did dine in. You order from the small 'bar' and grab your premade sides from a warmer. Though the worker was very nice there was just no personality or suggestions of the menu or any interaction for that matter. I ordered the pulled pork with 2 sides. It came with Pulled Pork(a large portion), hamburger bun, sides I chose: coleslaw and potato wedges. They have a bbq sauce bar & pickles, sauerkraut, and onions if you want. The pulled pork was smoked nicely, but there was no hint of salt or any seasonings. Maybe that is their style, but not mine. The coleslaw was creamy like I like, but there was no flavor. The potato wedges were precooked sitting in the warmer. They were very soggy & semi cold. The one thing I did like was their BBQ sauces. They have 4 kinds from sweet, vinegar, etc. The price was also good and very big portions. I will not be returning. read more

I'm no stranger to gas station barbecue - odd how barbecue is the one food in a gas station that doesn't weird me out, compared to say burgers or pizza... A friend saw this joint in an article by The Guardian, and he raved about it after he went. I was driving along I-20 and decided to pop in. The best part about Butts To Go is the incredible value. $4 for a pulled pork sandwich, a bag of chips, and a fountain drink is pretty incredible. Each side is under $2, so you can very easily fill up on a classic bbq meal for under $10. Potato salad - probably best part of meal. Baked beans actually have bits of meat, not just sauce. Sandwich is fine, desperately needs sauce, but there are multiple choices including Dreamland and Hog Heaven, which is actually pretty neat! Don't expect the most luxurious restaurant setting, and you'll enjoy this spot. Or, just take it away and dine in the comfort of your car or hotel or home! read more

Inside of a Texaco so you may be a little confused at first, but its not hard to find. Great staff, and great food. Really quick service, so if your passing by don't not stop here! It's only 1.2 miles off the exit and a straight path, very easy to get to. The food has a great but subtle smoky flavor and there's a little place inside if you want to stay in eat! For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst art of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. And if you also think that the place you'd look for ' good 'Cue (note capitalization) would not be in a gas station, then you'd also be wrong.At least this time. Turns out a barbecue joint squeezed into the corner of a service station (sounds better than gas station) can turn out some pretty good 'Cue. And for a guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the Perfect Barbecue (read more than seven dozen Yelp reviews from across the country), that turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The place is Butts To Go and my hunch is that it's a family run enterprise. You know it's authentic by the number and various sizes of the smokers outside. Once inside, you know it's authentic because the people there, likely a mom, her daughter and her husband, seem to be just genuinely nice people who will tell you how much money you could save if you opt for the special (more food for less money). We opted for pork and brisket sandwiches, chips, potato salad, beans and tea. And weren't disappointed on any count and surprised when the Texaco Maître De came by our one of only three tables and offered up some incredibly delicious smoked wings. Crisp, moist and full flavor. From the bottom up: the tea is not homemade, but ten neither or the sauces. At our visit we had our choice of several, the best of which was the famed Dreamland sauce (thin with slight taste of vinegar and a bit of a kick) and something called Hog Heaven sauced from Sylacauga, Alabama - likely a little known barbecue sanctuary somewhere in a heavily wooded area not visible from the air or highway, but where they put out one of heckuva great barbecue sauce. If you're into sauce (in a manner of speaking) look for this one in the store or one a shelf near the checkout counter at BTG. The brisket was chopped maybe an inch or so thick on a fresh bun, the pork was in strips - both moist, both teeing up real flavor, and both bargains, and all the more so as part of Butts' special The potato salad was good, the beans, obviously homemade and better than average, the ribs not yet ready. Next time. Other Yelp reviews suggests that for most folks, Butts To Go is must that, a place you go when you went your 'Cue to go home with you... but if you've on the highway, or you'd just prefer, they do have all of three small tables where you can sit down next to a great selection of junk food on one wall and the drink cooler on the other. I doubt that tipping can get you preferred seating. Finding a seat is the challenge. Drinks? You fill your own cup and refills are on the house. Butts To Go is worth finding if you're anywhere near... Good, very good barbecue at reasonable prices serviced up by some nice folks. I ordered a half slab of ribs along with coleslaw and beans. Everything was delicious and the people were nice. I don't dislike Butts To Go. The people there were above and beyond friendly and helpful. The food I enjoyed. But I looked up a "restaurant" to take my wife to, on Yelp, I was disappointed it was a gas station. Not part fuel station, part restaurant, it's 100% fuel station. I asked for a jumbo pork sandwich, and I was pointed to the "warmer", wrapped in aluminum foil, just like most other gas stations. We order from this company several times a year for so many occasions (Thanksgiving and Christmas, July 4th Memorial Day Labor Day ect..) the food is amazing!! Today we ordered a Boston butt chopped.. my wife picked it up and realized when she got to another store it wasn't chopped.. she went back and Wayne told her there was a charge to chop it but realized the mistake and did not charge us.. once chopped the Boston butt shrank from about 7.3 pounds to about 4 and a half because a lot of the meat was fatty. Wayne and company were kind enough to even add some more meat to make sure we got what we paid for.. these are good people who run a good business with food that is consistently top notch.. keep up the good work! read more

Wow what a hidden gem! Yes, it's in a gas station, but the food was legit. The pulled pork was tender, flavorful, a good amount of smoke, and a hefty portion on the pulled pork plate. The baby back ribs may have been some of the best baby backs we've had - beautifully pink from the smoke, fall of the bone, and meaty. We tried a variety of sauces and enjoyed them all for what they offered -- a little zippy zing in one, smoky sweet in another, etc. The seasoned chicken wings were also super tasty. Tender, juicy, full of flavor. In MY ideal world, the skin would be crisp but I really enjoyed them and would eat them again. The baked beans were fine, and the potato wedges were a bit cold. The potato salad was different than any we've had before - definitely a sour cream and chive kinda vibe. The crowning star on our trip was Ms. Brenda who was so kind and engaging with my children.
