We ordered the smoked chicken plate and the combo plate, and overall, the food was really enjoyable. The smoked chicken was succulent and full of flavor -- easily the highlight for me. I'm not personally a fan of mayonnaise, so I skipped the Alabama white sauce, but my guest ordered it and really liked it. If that style of sauce is your thing, it seems to be well executed here. The French fries were cooked well, though I found myself wishing there was a house seasoning or something on the table to switch up the flavor profile a bit. The collard greens were also delicious -- tender and nicely prepared, with most of the stems removed, though there were still a few more than I would have preferred. Where the experience dipped was service. We were seated in a back corner, and it took quite a while to get assistance from servers throughout the meal. It didn't feel intentional, just a bit overlooked. The restaurant itself is in a very cool, older building with character. The historic feel is part of its charm, though aesthetically it does feel a little worn in places -- understandably so given the age of the space. Eating at Saw's Juke Joint in Crestline was a nice experience this Saturday for lunch. The restaurant has a laidback atmosphere where we enjoyed dining inside the restaurant, even though we could've dined outside or in the huge bar area. 'E' was our Waiter and he was very nice and attentive to all our needs. I ordered a baker with chicken and when E brought my order to our table, the potato was the size of a NERF football with all the trimmings (lots of bbq chicken, shredded cheese, butter and sour cream). I figure I'll be eating this delectable meal all weekend long!!! We also treated ourselves to an appetizer - fried dill pickles with homemade ranch dressing, which was delicious. All of us went home with to-go plates, because there was no way we could eat all the food that was delivered to our table. First off, I thought I was about to arrive at someone's home - It was through neighborhood after neighborhood, but GPS took me into the parking lot with no problems. (Trust the process)   This is a hole in the wall vibe for sure.  Quaint.  Cool.  Laid back.  Bar to the left, family to the right kind of atmosphere; everyone seemed welcome and comfortable.  We arrived around 7:30pm and there was a small wait just to get a server to finish serving their tables.  We were seated and our server (never got his name, he didn't introduce himself) talked quick but slowed down a bit when we told him this was our first time.  He suggested some menu items, some of which we did choose.   FRIED GREEN TOMATOES - They looked great!!  However, the overpowering vinegar taste was just too much.  They were very mushy inside but the breading on them was perfect.  The sauce they served with it was very mustard based and did not fit the profile of the tomato in my or my guest's opinions.   FRIED PICKLES - These were a slam hit!  Light, breaded perfectly, sliced nice and thin and not one soggy pickle in the bunch.  There were a few over salted areas of the platter but overall it was great!   CHILI CHEESE FRIES - The fries were cooked well but the chili was indeed that - Chili with beans that you would serve in bowl with cornbread.  The cheese that was on the fries didn't even melt; it kept its shape.  We left ¾ of the platter uneaten.   PORK N' GREENS - This was one of the recommended by our server.  First, the portion could feed two people!  The presentation was lovely.  The pork was tender like velvet.  The greens did taste as if they were from a can but still decent.  The cheese grits were creamy but could have used a bit more salt and pepper, but we just added.  The topping of thinly sliced onion rings were a very nice crunch to the dish.  Overall, if you go, this is one to try!   CATFISH N' GREENS - Another recommendation by our server.  Again, I can duplicate everything above and the catfish!  The catfish had an amazing batter.  A little thicker from where I come from but not so heavy that it took away from the fish.  It played well with the dish and again, if you go, this is another to try most definitely!   PORK STUFFED BAKER - Man this one was beautifully presented as well.  Pork was tender and the potato was fluffy, well cooked and it was huge!  This was most definitely a meal portion!   Overall, the price was very affordable, the portion sizes were above average, and the sweet tea was PERFECT!!!  The service could use some improvement as we had to wait for a good amount of time before we were asked about refills, but his politeness helped us to easily overlook it. read more

The bbq at Saw's is amazing!!!! I usually go to their "soul kitchen " location, but this one is near my aunt's home. We walked in around lunchtime and were seated immediately. We ordered the fried pickles and they were a tad bit salty. My pork sandwich was so, so good and the fried green tomatoes were delicious. Unfortunately, they were out of fried okra. I added some of their Alabama white sauce to my sandwich and it added a really nice flavor. My son enjoyed his fried chicken sandwich and onion rings and my mom enjoyed her food as well. Went to Saw's Juke Joint in Birmingham (Crestline) and I have to say, I was blown away by the quality of their barbeque. I've had BBQ in Alabama a few times before, mostly at Jim 'N Nick's, but I was never really impressed until I tried Saw's Juke Joint. The batter was crispy and the pickles were just the right amount of sour. For my main course, I went with the pulled pork with Alabama white sauce. The pork was smoky, juicy, and incredibly flavorful. The white sauce was tangy and complemented the pork perfectly. Overall, I had an excellent experience at Saw's Juke Joint in Birmingham.
