I recently stopped by Dave's Bar for some day drinking for St. Patrick's Day and to watch the St. Patrick's Day parade. The drink menu has a good variety of options which is always nice. Car bombs were $9and well shots were $3. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, making sure everyone was taken care with the busy crowd. It had a nice mix of people, and the environment felt lively but comfortable at the same time. Whether you're looking for a casual day/night out or just a place to grab a drink and relax, this bar is definitely worth checking out. read more

Popped in here for a few minutes before a show at Zydeco. The outside of this place is classy brick with nice patio seating. The inside, well simply put, is dive bar through and through. Floors are an interesting material, from the looks of it, installed on the off chance that the pups (dog friendly bar) have an accident. Pretty wide open space on the inside can host a large number of people. About 15 bar stools and a few tables spread out across the main floor. Typical bar with some draft beer options, a large selection of bottles/cans/seltzers, mixed drinks, etc. Bartender was friendly and checked on us a few times. Prices were in line with similar style bars in the area. I'd come back and check them out again. Also, good spot to bring the pups for a little socializing. read more

I came here to see Chad Fisher and Carrie wheat. There are tons of other very well-known artists. There's enough parking on Highland Avenue. There was no cover. The beer is warm but that doesn't bother me. They have a plastic water container where you can drink water. But it is not cold. It's kind of a dive but I like it. Not only are the bartenders great but the drinks are always spot on. Dave's gives you a dive bar feel but you will quickly learn that there are actual mixologist behind the bar that will make you pretty much anything that you ask for from a vast selection of spirits. The best thing about this place is the porch you can sit there all day and people watch and just enjoy the vibes of 5 points. Dave's is definitely one of my weekly stops!! This is one of the few places that occasionally has a band, is a Birmingham icon, and greatly priced variety of drinks. If you're looking to be by yourself, meet new people, or simply hang out with your friends, than this is your place. It's probably the closest hangout joint to Homewood, as you head to Birmingham. Dave's is a great little dive bar in the heart of five points. It has been there as long as I can remember. I think Sunday is the best day here. They open at 3pm. They have a great covered patio, which makes it enjoyable even if it's raining. They have just about any kind of bottle beer you could want, as well as maybe 10 draft beers to pick from. They also have a very impressive whiskey collection. I have seen some pretty rare bottles before, including pappy. Cocktail wise, just stick to the basics. Ya know, gin and tonic, vodka soda. I wouldn't get much crazier then that considering most everyone in there is drinking beers and shots. read more

I went to trivia night at Dave's Pub last night with some family. It was my first time there, but my family had been there many times. We had an excellent time. A wide variety of beers and an excellent staff made the night very enjoyable and I love the patio. great place to hang out. The trivia crew was great and we came in third place. My only complaint was that it was as cold as a meat locker in there (which is why I loved the patio). Other than that, it was a fun night and we will definitely be back. This is a great place to meet with friends after work. The whiskey women of Alabama met here for our meeting and it was as great. We were served a cocktail called Alabama bramble which was very good. Then we were taught to make a simple syrup and how to infuse it with different flavor. Next we where able to mix our own cocktail that is called the brown derby cocktail. Super service, but the physical property needs some love. Four in my party enjoyed a decent selection of draught including several local craft beers. The bartender offered samples, was very knowledgeable, and courteous. Prices were reasonable. I salute the human resources at Dave's! The property is in need of some remodeling, maintenance, and repair. The air is stale and smells strongly of cigar. Dave's is a nice local bar in Five Points with a good patio for people watching or gathering with a group, but it can fill up quick. We went on a night when there wasn't a ton going on and there was clearly a regular group of patrons. They certainly took priority over us, but I understand that. We had reasonably priced drinks (no cocktails, so can't comment on that) and stayed for about an hour. On this visit, I was underwhelmed. There didn't appear to be anything at Dave's that I couldn't get somewhere else for the same price with a little bit more space to move around. Nothing bad, but nothing that would really make me want to go running back. I wouldn't be opposed to giving it another shot on an evening they had live music or going with a group instead of just two of us. read more

So I just witnessed a patron get pushed, fall over and hit her head. The bartenders refused to call the ambulance "cuz it's not their responsibility" and I agree the group with her responded poorly but come on. Lady bartender kept saying this is how bars work. I don't think she has ran a business before. Someone gets hurt on your watch in your establishment, you better pucker up your butthole cuz it's going to cost you something. It's the price of doing business and why most bars kick out drunk patrons. This was handled poorly and this should cost someone their job but it probably won't. The worst part was the bartender telling all the other patrons what's going on and calling the group psychos. I'd be on the phone with a lawyer in the morning if I was that girl lol. read more

I've decided to upgrade Dave's to 4 stars! It deserves the extra star because of the excellent, FREE music they provide as well as some pretty kick ass drink specials. They don't do the stupid happy hour thing that ends before I even make it out. They last all night. Almost every Thursday night this summer I've been enjoying some of the finest music Birmingham has to offer as Dave's has been hosting Sam Gunderson Trio. I like Dave's a lot. When I first moved to the area, it was my go-to spot on the weekends. The music gets kind of loud, but the outdoor area is perfect for people-watching. Everyone that works here (Mud especially) is great. They'll have a conversation with you while making drinks, which I appreciate. If you go here more than twice, the doorman will definitely recognize you, which isn't the case at most of the bars in the area. Some of my friends don't enjoy Dave's so much, which I understand. The people that go here are pretty hipster. They aren't the most pleasant people to drink around sometimes. There's never a cover here, even when there's a live band. They also have a great beer selection and will let you bring in whatever food you want. I have a lot of good memories at Dave's and wish the place nothing but the best. PS: This place is DEAD on weekdays, which is part of its charm. read more

I wish I could give this place 4 stars, but in all honesty its been almost 2 years since I've visited Birmingham and I was only at Daves for maybe an hour, BUT, in that hour, I had a good time. Downtown Birmingham is now one of my favorite places, sort of a smaller 6th street Austin type area. Very cozy. Daves has a nice outdoor patio, which everyone knows I'm obsessed with. The bartenders were very helpful, and laughed when I asked for any vodka other than Mckormicks which they said they did not have anyways (THANK GOD) Me and my boyfriend at the time left Texas at 11PM and arrived in Birmingham at 11AM. My favorite singer Will Hoge was due to play the next night at the Sloss Furnace, but the show ended up cancelling so we went out. We ended up partying with three guys from Washington down for Talledega, which also got rained out, so downtown Birmingham was packed with people from all over. One of the best nights of my life so far, and it all started with Daves. read more

This is a great neighborhood bar that has been in the 5 points area for many years. The crowd is diverse and friendly. They normally have two bartenders and their very quick and friendly. Many options for craft beer and good cocktails. I prefer going on Tuesday night's because it's blues night. Great band and if you like to sing blues your welcome to sing with band. It also has a patio that isn't very large but I've seen smaller. It can get really packed at times. read more

Dave's is my favorite bar in Birmingham. When my friends and I are going out we always say we will go to Dave's and then go wherever the night takes us. We inevitably end up having such a great time we stay until Dave's closes. Mudd and Wild Bill are the best bartenders in town closely followed by Eric from Carrigans. They are very friendly, entertaining, and can come up with any creative cocktail for you. Live music can be a bit loud, so I just sit on the porch to listen. I recommend going on Thursdays when they have the Karaoke Dance Party. On Saturdays during football season they grill out free food! read more

You will find this place in the heart of 5 points, a great location with a few other places around it. It has an excellent patio or beer garden to enjoy a cocktail and people watch. Okay, my first impression of this place might have been a little overly positive. This place is very nice and laid-back in the afternoon and early evening hours, but as Colin pointed out, this place becomes unbearably loud and smoky by 10:00 on the weekends. For some reason they feel the need to crank the jukebox up to the point where it's impossible to carry on a conversation. Came here after the 4th of July fireworks display! A little too dark for my liking but I loved the atmosphere! They had a live Dj who played EVERYTHING! He didn't stick to just one genre! It was great! We had a drink and headed home but if it was on any other night where we didn't just hike 13.5 miles, we would have stayed a lot longer! We went to Dave's just to have a drink or two. Some girl fell, hit her head, and was bleeding all down her face and neck. What did the staff do? Call her concerned brother an asshole, make fun of the girl, and called her and her friend's "psychos". The woman behind the bar said she worked at UAB and that it wasn't that bad. Doesn't matter. Someone got hurt, wether they were over served or not, someone should have done something regardless. But instead she decided to make fun of her to her guests. Businesses have insurance for a reason.
