I recently tried The Rougaroux and it's one of the most unique Southern/Cajun spots I've been to. The restaurant has a really cool vibe, like a hidden house you would find in New Orleans, which makes the whole experience feel more authentic and fun. I dined in, and the atmosphere was relaxed but still lively. The service was good, and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. My favorite thing I ordered was the voodoo chicken po boy. It has blackened chicken, bacon, jalapeños, and white pimento cheese, and it was so good. The flavors all worked really well together, and it had just the right amount of spice. I also tried the gumbo, which was so good too! The food was filling and full of flavor! And I loved how the restaurant was like a house because it adds to the charm. read more

This location is in a really nice part of town with a beautiful ambience and surrounding building architecture outside to match it. The young ladies who took our order were really friendly and helpful. I ordered a fried shrimp po'boy and it was DELICIOUS. Very flavourful and fresh. Everything was great!! The only thing I didn't care for was their Gumbo, it was a little too salty for ME, but other than that the Oysters were fried so lightly! I had a slush Hurricane for my drink! The closest thing to a cottage in the French Quarter you can find in the 'Ham! The Rougaroux is one of my favorite places to eat. Tucked unassumingly on a side street, this place is bursting with New Orleans charm and flavors. I love the po boys and the drinks. They have rotating specials that are all delicious. The more polished cousin of the Forest Park location. All the food is delicious. If you're craving beach food but find yourself inland, the basket of fried shrimp here is delicious. Light, fresh breading, good shrimp, and crinkle-cut fries with cajun seasoning. The remoulade and cocktail sauce had a great flavor. I ordered both to maximize the flavor payoff of my dipping. Fast-casual! Order at the front and they bring it out to you. Great spot to hang out for an afternoon drink, too. They had a few frozen drink options like hurricanes and bushwackers. Count.me.in. Overall, great place for a quick lunch with a friend or coworker! Parking is a little bit difficult and there's been construction going on, causing traffic in MB Village for what feels like one million years. Delicious Cajun food in a casual joint with live music. There's a lot going on inside The Rougaroux, and it's all good! You order and pay at the register, they give you a number, you find a table, and they bring you your food. The staff here are super friendly and very helpful! I had a Caesar salad with fried oysters along with their "World Famous Crawfish Zombie Bread." The salad was fresh with an excellent dressing, lots of freshly shaven Parmesan cheese, and 6 perfectly fried plump oysters. It was delicious. The Crawfish Bread included crawfish, spices, and cheese on an open-faced fresh hoagie roll. I would have liked to see a few more crawfish for the $18 price. The flavor profile was a bit mild, so I added a touch of hot sauce. The restaurant and the restrooms are both very clean and well decorated! We came to Birmingham to do some scouting and brought Mom & Dad's pup, Lucy. So our search was narrowed down to dog friendly places. The Rougaroux offer shaded, patio seating in the back of the restaurant which was perfect. We arrived at about 1315 with a line from the register to the front door. Everyone order was taken expediently and then seating was open. We waited only 5 or so minutes for our food. Everything tasted okay. Nothing that we tasted exceeded expectations but we did notice many other delicious menu items worth trying next time. I have been wanting to try this place for so long and I'm so glad we finally did! I got the Oyster Rockefeller Po-Boy and I have never had a Po-Boy like this. I love the bread, it was very light and fluffy and had a good crunch. The oysters were fried perfectly, and I love the thick chunks of bacon- this added a lot of great flavor. The spinach and Parmesan also went so well this it. I loved the atmosphere here too, very much Nola vibes. Next time, I would definitely try their gumbo to see how it is, but 10/10 on the po-boy! read more

I am visiting from Nashville. So im not a connoisseur of New Orleans cuisine. But I know good food when I taste it. I've had authentic New Orleans food, & have been to places outside of New Orleans that hold up to the original. This place absolutely DOES NOT. The gumbo is a stew, NOT gumbo. And it all tastes like hospital food. The "fried" catfish was slimy. The only good thing was the fries, & not because they were "creole", as advertised. This was a COMPLETE WASTE of $40. I see why the place was empty when i got there. All i can say is the guy that took my order, was nice. Wish i could get my money back. read more

Horrible customer service they give off prejudice vibes I order $ l50 worth of food which was not very good but when I got home I noticed they made my order wrong so I call and informed them and the fat guy at the register was super rude and responded what do you want me to do about it. EeeeeYUCK!!! Worst version of Cajun food I have ever had in my life! I lived in Louisiana for four years and I travel there frequently. This food looked the part online, but the taste was off. BBQ shrimp had minimal sauce and it was way too smokey flavored. Nothing like the BBQ shrimp I have had in NOLA. Then there was the gumbo. When I tasted the gumbo, I had to look in the kitchen to see what the cook looked like, cause BAY BEE!! WHAT IS THIS??? I wanted to LOVE this place so badly, but it was a true disappointment. I love the original Rougaroux in Forest Park. Everything from the neighborhood, decor, menu, and food feels like an authentic New Orleans po'boy stop. I should mention they also have frozen daiquiri machines and they import the French bread from Leidenheimer in New Orleans. This is the second location, and it is located in the new section of Mountain Brook village. A much swankier neighborhood than Forest Park. Still, the restaurant is small and maintains the feeling of a neighborhood family run place. The format is counter order, self-service drink station, and bus you own table. The menu is the same as the original location. I had lunch with fellow Yelp elite Gary I on Tuesday. I had a cup of gumbo and the Vietnamese Cajun po'boy. I loved the gumbo; nice roux, seafood and okra with a spicy kick. The Viet-Cajun po'boy is excellent a nice change from the more traditional fried seafood po'boys. It was very good. read more

This was my first trip to The Rougaroux on Culver Road in Mt. Brook. Thought I called in my to go order, I arrived and sat down at the bar to have a beer and listen to the live music. The music was good, the servers were excellent and I enjoyed the weird drinks I was sampling while quizzing the barmaids. I tried some kinda crazy NOLA Brewery IPA Tall Boy that had a picture of a skull full of Cannabis Buds on it, Then I tried an Easy Mango Mineral Water that was a little crazy and canned in Birmingham. I tried these when I was told they are good for pain. - go figure As a usual, ( Avondale ) location being my prior usual for the Rougaroux Cajun Food. And as usual the food and drink is excellent and expensive. On this Friday I ordered 2 Whole Muffulettas for $29.00 each and Two 8 Inch Viet Cajun Seafood PoBoys that's $19.00 each. The Muffulettas are delicious as expected and I'm still eating on them. Pulling a quarter at the time from my refrigerator warming these sandwiches in the microwave just enough to soften the bread and melt the cheese and warm the meats. Each of these $29 sandwiches is good for at least 2 meals for a big eaters eating nothing else. I can stretch a whole muffuletta to 4 meals with chips. These Whole Muffulettas are Served warm on Round 10 inch round Gambino's italian bread loaf with Cochon Butcher Mortadella + Genoa Salami + Capicola + Provolone + Olive Salad......Enough Said ! YUM ! The Viet Cajun Seafood PoBoy is served on the a 8" Leidenheimer poboy roll with Breaux Bridge Crawfish + Gulf Shrimp + Cajun Spices + Garlic Butter + Ginger + Lemongrass + Chilies....and this is Very Very Tasty - Spicy ! Excellent PoBoy. I do wish the Viet Cajun PoBoys were bigger for the $. Maybe 10-12 inches. You need a bowl of Gumbo to make a complete meal with this PoBoy. For those of you that have eaten in the nicer restaurants in NOLA, you have most likely eaten this Leidenheimer bread. It's the best PoBoy/Hoagie style or just loafs of bread I have ever eaten. I will return soon - maybe on payday, I managed to spend $ 154.00 for this trip. $50 of this was 2 beers, 2 mineral waters and the tip. read more

Delish Cajun food in a funky but clean dive bar tiny place in the heart of Mountain Brook. They also offer beer and probably other alcohol. Order at the cashier and self service sodas or water. We shared a $21 shrimp basket. Shrimp were smallish but good and plentiful. Fries were hot, crispy and good with a touch of Cajun pepper but the thick crinkle style is not my fave. Loved the custom signs for their two very clean rest rooms. It continued their funky werewolf theme. Overall, we enjoyed our lunch there. Our son liked his fish poorboy. Mom's therapist recommended The Rougaroux in Highland Park. I saw they opened a a 2nd location in Mountain Brook, so I decided it was time to try it. First off, Birmingham is not New Orleans. When in New Orleans food tastes better and authentic. To caveat this review, I did take-out. As I'm driving to the restaurant from Crestline Village, it dawns on me that this is Friday. It always seems like all of Mountain Brook goes out for dinner on Fridays. I lucked out again, even with closed streets and detours. I found a parking space fairly close and the restaurant was just starting to get busy. I was immediately served by smiling friendly staff. She answered all my questions. I think I waited maybe 10 minutes for my food. This trip I chose Seafood basket for Mom, a roast beef debris for me, crawfish zombie bread cause I was curious, and a cup of gumbo. The gumbo is good. No skimping on the meat ingredients. I was disappointed in the crawfish zombie bread. It's spicy and soggy. There appeared to be a reasonable amount of crawfish. I just didn't like the sogginess. My taste buds were not filled with enthusiastic flavor. Mom loved the shrimp basket. There was a ton of shrimp and they had a great flavor. The batter is light and tasty. The fries have a great seasoning. Good hush puppies. The roast beef debris was good, but it was not like ones I've had in NOLA. I was expecting the inside of bread to be soaked in an "au jus" but this one was more creamy. There is a future visit to try a Po'Boy and muffuletta. read more

We have been to the original Rougaroux in Forest Park many times. This was our first visit to the one in Mt. Brook. We go out with friends once a quarter and take turns choosing a restaurant. Last night (November 21, 2024) or friends chose the restaurant, and I am so glad they chose The Rougaroux in Mt. Brook. We loved the atmosphere...the wait staff were very friendly and super helpful. I especially like the have Blue Moon on tap, but other than that, I like the fact they have salads on the menu. I had the fried oyster caesar salad with their homemade dressing, and it was delicious. I lost count of the number of oysters...there were a LOT...and the large pieces of shaved parmesan were delicious. Hubby had the surf 'n turf, collard greens, and a cup of gumbo. He said they were all very good. He loves collard greens and raved about them. One of our friends had the oyster rockefeller po boy and our other friend had the oyster po boy and a cup of gumbo. We all had the bread pudding which was fantastic! Love that bread pudding! The only negative is the decor- zombies and death; not somewhere one would bring children.
