Saw's is a Birmingham staple, perfect for a casual meal. Great location, service, and food! My favorite is the sweet tea fried chicken sandwich with a side of cheese grits, which are to die for!! I do wish they had Mac and cheese as a side though!
Good food, great staff, and a very laid back atmosphere! There were 4 of us and we ordered fried green tomatoes, pulled pork, chicken, sausage , and catfish sandwich!
I tried the Carolina Hot Dog for my first time, and it was so full of chili and slaw that I ate it with a fork and knife. Haha. It was delicious. Sweet potato fries were hot. Definitely request a side of honey mustard for dipping. Service was great. Food came out sooooo fast. This is important to know if you want a paced experience. But if you need a quick bit, Saw's is the place! It's spring and just warm enough to sit outside but not too hot yet. Perfect patio weather.
Very casual, delicious spot. Our server was extremely attentive and gave us a good rundown of the menu. We got the fried pickles to start which were perfectly crispy and what I would expect from the dish. She recommended the chicken thighs and because we weren't starving we decided to share the plate with a side salad. The chicken thighs were indeed tasty!! Juicy, tender, and loved the two bbq sauces. I didn't expect much from the wedge salad, but the blue cheese dressing was great. Not too overbearing. The live music was a nice touch and we are excited to come back!
Saw's Juke Joint is a very popular local spot in the Mountain Brook area for a quick and casual meal in lively environment. Everything about it is unpretentious from the concrete floors, mismatched tables and chairs, to the random wall decor. On this particular evening there was live music in the bar area. The place was packed and we were lucky to find some street parking since it shares a lot with Slice pizza and some other smaller businesses that were likely closed. Fortunately, we only waited about 15 minutes or so for a table. We were promptly greeted by an energetic server who was very busy but effectively managing a few tables. He quickly recommended the okra that wasn't on the menu. Aside from a few inedible "woody" pieces, the okra seemed fresh with a remoulade dip and crispy battered coating that was tasty. Lots of things to choose from on this menu from BBQ to burgers, porkskins, fried pickles and chicken sandwiches... We decided on the smoked crispy chicken thighs with a side of potato salad and baked beans and the "Chicken n' Greens" which is greens (maybe collards, it doesn't say on the menu) over cheese grits topped with pulled grilled chicken, red sauce and onion rings. The chicken thighs, although slightly overcooked, are pretty tasty but you need to cover them with the accompanying sauces for some much needed moisture. Unfortunately, both the potato salad and baked beans are rather bland. In fact, the beans taste like they're poured straight out of the can, warmed and served; and the potato salad seemed not to have much more than mayo and a dash of mustard added. The "chicken n' greens" is a surprisedly special dish even though like everything else, it is served on a styrofoam plate with plastic cutlery. I guess that's part of this restaurant's charm. You can also get this one with pork , catfish, shrimp or oysters. Now, the real star of the meal turned out to be the banana pudding! If you've ever experienced the famous Magnolia Bakery in New York City, then you'll quickly recognize that this banana pudding is an excellent rival. Don't skip it! Overall, this was a good dining experience. With some major improvement of the sides and a little more tidying up of the space, this would be a real winner. Nevertheless, it clearly has appeal and is very popular. We will definitely return to try some other menu item and of course the banana pudding!
Place is impressive. Had the sweet tea fried chicken, greens and fried green tomatoes. Sandwich out of this world with the white sauce. I don't even like greens much and they were so good. Tomatoes excellent. Just wished I could have tried the great pudding everyone is talking about. I am stuffed!
Best Fried Chicken Sandwich + Desserts + GREAT SERVICE I did learn about the Palmer Bros while eating incredible food.
This place is right up my alley. It's basically a dive, but a BBQ joint should be. Sat out front. The catfish was delicious. The food came quick. Our waitress took time to help us choose. And the Bushwhacker a friend recommended was great. After we ate, we stopped inside at the bar due a drink before ordering an Uber, and the bar was even more my style. Classic country low key, but with a cool bar. I'd come back often.
Reviews are largely positive. People highlight the flavorful and varied food, friendly and attentive staff, and a lively, casual atmosphere.

Came here with coworker for lunch. I ordered the Pulled Pork Plate. It was delicious. One of the best pulled pork place ever, considering I come from NYC. Also the food price in here is way cheaper than in NYC. In here it was $15.5 per plate whereas it would cost around $30 in NYC. If I lived in here I would come here every day for lunch. I'd say this is one of the greatest hole in a wall places for food! read more

Been coming here for years. Always great service and the food is amazing. Chicken thighs today w white sauce, greens and fried okra. The okra stole the show, whole okra split and fried. Damn good. Always a good pour in the Tito's and club soda. Thanks Saws! Will always come back! read more
Saw's Juke Joint has been one of my favorite joints in Birmingham. This time I brought some of my buddies from Dothan in to give it a try. The location is in the middle of a suberb. There is a bar area but the atmosphere feeling is of a dive. The seating area is larger than the other Saw's locations. There are chalkboards in the main room that have the menu on the wall. The menu is diverse and has lots of things I love: BBQ pulled pork, burgers, wings, and the famous Sweet Tea Chicken Sandwich. Everything is a la carte. My order today included the Sweet Tea Chicken sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and potato salad. The Sweet Tea Chicken sandwich has its batter made from brining sweet tea. I think it is a better Chick-fil-a sandwich and comes with white BBQ sauce and pickles. If you have never had white Alabama BBQ sauce, it has a tangy taste to it. Most white Alabama BBQ sauce is made from mayo, lemon juice, black pepper, and horseradish. The pulled pork was amazingly tender and juicy. It came with a vinegar style BBQ sauce but I would recommend adding the sweeter, thicker BBQ sauce that you have to ask for. I did love the potato salad at one time from here because it was very creamy and tangy like it was made from the Alabama white sauce. But the last 2 times, it hasn't been as good. It seems the salad doesn't congeal together. My buddy got fried pickles and they were satisfactory. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Despite the potato salad being disappointing, there is something for everyone here at Saw's Juke Joint. read more

I literally just had an orgasm while eating ! I got the chicken and greens , their classic . You can get it pork or chicken , catfish, or oysters . Grits, collard greens , smoked chicken and fresh fried onion rings . Each item perfectly seasoned in a unique way I wanted to order an extra entree and take it home to have my way with it! read more

Met some gentlemen there for a midday get together and introduced them to Saw's. We all had something different and everyone enjoyed their dishes. Jordan was our waitress and she did a great job. I had blackened catfish. One had polish sausage, another a burger and the third had chicken thighs. The place is in a hidden strip mall so trust your gps lol. We opted to eat outside. One of the guys requested outside but I was already thinking it so it was cool with me. Some suggested returning with their wives. Yes I would suggest it. read more
The last a few times we ordered take out we ended up disappointed. It seems something changed lately. Burgers were always hyper cooked if not charcoaled, and sides were quite blend. Social distancing score: Zero - you call to order - they place the delivery bag outside, still, you need to go in to pay - you need to get to the center Island to pay and no employee would have a mask on - some tables have been removed - full-on credit card and receipts touching both ways Basically, here they operate like Covid is fiction not a real thing. Bad deal. Concerning. I will not go back for a loooong time read more

I've been coming to Saw's for years, but this is somehow my first time to do a review for this location. This is my favorite location and it's a great spot to meet friends for dinner and drinks and listen to some music. The staff was very friendly and the was amazing as always. The prices are very fair here. You can go have some drinks and entrees with your spouse here and be under 50 dollars. Plan to have to wait for seating if you go for dinner. read more

This is one of those places where everything is good. I got the smoked dog, boudin, sweet potato fries, and turnip greens - all good. I really enjoyed the boudin because it was dressed in a highly vinegar-based sauce. Sweet potato fries were also on point. One point of improvement might be to offer to dress up the smoked dog with some additional ingredients. This restaurant is a Birmingham classic, and it is not hard to see why. read more

I might as well review Saw's juke joint because it's an easy review to write. The food is awesome. They've got the same BBQ as the other Saw's locations which is in my opinion, (which is shared by many), the best BBQ in town hands down. This location has the most seating out of all of them. So if you find yourself in a bus full of people who all want Saw's, please go to the Juke Joint so that you'll all have a place to sit. A bar area in this location separates it from the others. You can get drunk here if you want, so that's a plus....and the parking is better than both the Avondale and Homewood locations. So if you and your friends are thinking of getting drunk and ordering BBQ, and you're fed up with the madness that is parking in Avondale and the area in Homewood near that location, and you might need a little more space to stretch out then the Juke Joint should be calling your name. read more

Excellent food as always! My favorite BBQ I've had in the Birmingham area. Our server was great, but the inside of the restaurant could use a little sprucing up to make it look a little nicer. I'm sure they are trying to to for the "hole in the wall BBQ joint" look though, and at the end of the day, the food is so good, who cares what the restaurant looks like. One thing they are doing during the pandemic is having you scan a QR code to pull up the menu, rather than distributing out actual menus. The problem with this though, is there is poor cell phone service there, so this isn't very efficient. They are checking temps at the door and enforcing masks for though, so A+ for effort to keep us safe! read more
WOWOW! One of my all time favorite Birmingham institutions that have been to a million times, gave me a totally different experience today. Granted, during this unique time, all places are offering a different experience. But after a text from a close friend, I had no idea of the possibilities of this gem in a small shopping center near my house. To-go bushwhackers. Don't know what a bushwhacker is? It is a frostee, chocolatey and boozy concoction not built for the weak. It came in a milk container you would buy at the convenience store. And they can only do two per person. But I promise you that if you do this with lunch, that is the maximum you will want. Pair this with their already amazing burger (it is REALLY good), and call it a Covid19 win of a pick up meal. They even have a tent and a sign for the very trendy curbside pick-up. Complete with a fully gloved and sanitized employee. read more

This place was amazing, although more outdoor seating would be great. We had friendly service and our drink cups were never empty. Tons of great recommendations and all of the group loved their food. I would visit this place again and again if I lived nearby. The BBQ, sides, and desserts were all noteworthy with good beer options available too! read more

I came here with a big group of friends (9) on a Saturday evening! The atmosphere is great here - there is live music going on in the bar area and it flows well with the restaurant setup. However, we experienced a long wait due to parties watching the Auburn game. So we did have a little frustration with that and also our wait time not being true to what we were told initially. What made up for that was the server that kept checking on us while we waited outside and also a table that was seated outside. He asked if we wanted any drinks while we waited and that helped to somewhat offset the long wait time for our party. My wife and I ordered Bushwhackers as our drink - I did it as a bet and I had never had one before. The drink was good, however not one I would consider as a go-to because of how strong the alcohol was in it compared to the chocolate/creamy flavor that is in one. Also, it packs a punch and will have you feeling good afterwards so be aware if you try one! Again, well-made drink but not my personal preference. When we finally got seated at our table, it did not take long for our food to arrive, which given the large crowd and how hungry our group had become, it was impressive! I ordered the classic pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. My wife and I split an order of fried pickles as an appetizer- all of which where splendid. I would've preferred having thicker BBQ sauce, but the taste of sufficed for me. I tried a bit of my wife's side with her order - fried green beans - and thought that they were mediocre at best but by that time, I had became full which is a good thing because the food I had ordered myself was quite filling. Our server took well care of us and made sure we had our needs met. Overall, it was a great experience! You may come for the BBQ, but the side orders will have you wanting more. The only downsides was the wait being longer then what we were told and the fried okra being out of season (can't control that, but that's okay). I love the Crestline location for Saw's, and will come back again soon! read more

We were in Birmingham last month and wanted to try some Alabama bbq, heard all about this white sauce. After looking up reviews on yelp, we decided to head to Saw's Juke Joint. We ordered fried pickles, wings, chicken with the white sauce sandwich, and pulled pork sandwich. Well the wings were the highlight of the night - only reason why this place even gets a 2nd star, they were great! All the other stuff - pickles were just okay, the chicken was not good - it's really all about the white sauce all over it and if you aren't a fan of the white sauce, it is just not good. Lastly, the pulled pork, tasted like crock pot bbq rather than good smoked bbq. I feel really bad for Alabama if this is what you call the best bbq in town or great bbq. Definitely spoiled with some great bbq back home. read more

Being from Southern California we heard we had to check out Saws. This place is no joke and did not disappoint. The food was amazing, the bartender Jordan was great and the atmosphere was everything we could have hoped for. Saw's reputation speaks for itself. Make sure to check it out. If you're local- you know it's good. If you're from out of town- listen to the hype. read more

Saws is one of my favorite spots. I'm in town from Nashville a lot and always try to stop by. Today was my first visit back since the Spring. Really upset to see they've decreased their wing portion to 5 wings and gone up to $2 a wing. That's right. $10 for 5 wings. The best wings I've ever had from Martins BBQ in Nashville (which is a very expensive town) are $1.29 per wing. You get 6 for $7.79, same as their Birmingham location. Saws wings are awesome. But $10 for 5 wings is robbery and very disappointing. Not worth the extra time to get over here. Just 6 months ago the wings were 8 for $12.50, which is still high but reasonable. Sad this will be my last stop here. Update: an employee says the wings were almost discontinued due to supplier cost. Must not be buying from Martin's supplier. read more
Came across this joint while road tripping in the south. I was searching for the best pulled pork sandwich in Birmingham and here i am! I had heard, seen, and read a lot of reviews before making a final choice. Location: I head down from vulcan park and let me tell is the best scenery in town. You will drive through beautiful mix of architecture with english and southern american style. It will be chilling and just preparing you for the joint. They share a shopping mall with other restaurants/bars so i suggest to be patient and pray for a quick spot. Ambient: I arrived by Friday 6 pm and it was busy, as i walked in i was greeted with a friendly smile and kindness which is always nice to experience. I decided to order to go since i been driving on the road a long time but if the food holds on the flavor until you make it home or hotel (then you know how good the place is). The establishment has two sides one that family dinner oriented and another bar/lounge with a live band. The bar lounge had a more adult scene, perfect for couples and single people and friends to hang out. The bartender is the one that took my order and offered several recommendations (such a great quality to have in all your employees) Food quality: I took the food to the hotel and 2 hours later, i was surprised the sandwich held up pretty nice. I do this on purpose because it says a lot about the quality of the food. The bread had good texture and it didn't get saggy after i pour the sauce. When you take that bite the heavens go down to earth. When you feel that smoky flavors over the ting of the sauce thats how you know they hit a home run! Recommendations: I got the banana pudding which is a must when in Alabama. I also saw on instagram they offer a catfish sandwich that i heard is divine so add it to your list. This is definitely a good place to eat. read more

Saw's Juke Joint is without a doubt in my Top 3 restaurants in Birmingham. I understand that honor is usually bestowed for a high class establishment -- but that's how good Saw's food is. It's hard to name my favorite menu item: fried pickles, fried okra, sweet potato fries, smoked wings, burger, oh my! The atmosphere is fun and casual, perfect for large or loud groups. Catch me at Saw's for my future birthday dinners and special occasions. read more

First visit and I was pleased. From our waitress Katie (who was fantastic by the way) to my sweet tea chicken sandwich, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Those fried green tomatoes (My God)! Not to mention the sauce on both was flavorful and unique, something I admire about restaurants (having something to helps them stand out). I wonder who is the cook?! Kudos to them for sure. I'll definitely go back because not only was the food good the drinks were top notch too! Misslady Scores Saw's an A) read more

Delicious southern hospitality. Ignore ANY negative reviews and just read this. Delicious and inexpensive meal. What made the experience more worthwhile was Jordans(our waitress) friendly demeanor and contagious smile. Had the catfish sandwich (fried for hubby, blackened for me) fried green tomatoes and fried pickles. To too off with the banana pudding (10/10) and s'mores cheesecake was awesome (10/10). Defina MUST as was mentioned on food network. read more
