Slabtown Soul Plate

DAMN this food was good. Never enjoyed collard greens so much in my life. Cheese grits were spectacular. I'm not a sausage guy but I ate the whole thing. Chicken was incredibly tender. Seasoning was flavorful - spicy salty and sweet but not overpowering of any. Yes I will be back.

It's one of those iykyk kinda places, and btw, yk. The quintessential (a word not bandied about by most of the clientele - heck, even that term seems a stretch) local place. Lots of regulars providing the requisite color and good cheer - welcoming to a fault. Tonight's Tito Tuesday ($5), so lots of Moscow Mules going down. The burgers are well above average and medium rare if that's how you like to eat 'em - and I do. They'll even add that egg if you ask. Yelp! Insists I speak about the 'ambiance'. That's one of those fancy words like quintessential and clientele that I'll soon be forgetting after another a second MM. back to ambiance, it's got one. Come by when you're hungry. It doesn't disappoint.

It's been a long time since I had last eaten here and it is ever so popular! I got lucky to get a table as I walked in. The place is smaller than the demand so usually you'll find yourself waiting. Service was efficient, not super friendly, mostly acted rushed and in a hurry. I ordered the pecan crusted chicken salad. The lettuce was fresh, sliced crisp apples, and crunchy pecans on top. Yummy!

Incredibly juicy, hand crafted burgers. House made chips. Super friendly, helpful, and accurate service. Tables are super close together so had to hear a guy say ugly stuff about his wife to another guy. Decided they were never going to leave, so we packed up our food and left them to it. Anyway, maybe you will be seated next to an amazing story-teller and will want to stick around for the ending! You will be guaranteed to be able to hear every word. Nevertheless, we love this local spot. Even so. Go for the boss burgers and the service. But maybe avoid it if you want to confide your deepest secrets to your bestie.

Set at the on a busy Sunday. Had amazing service! Had a delicious $5 Bloody Mary. The sausage balls were a great starter. We had a yummy fried chicken wedge salad and breakfast tacos. Look forward for joining them for brunch again!

Burger of the Month

I'd completely forgotten this place existed until a recent Yelp search sent me back in the right direction. Wow! We've now been twice, and the food has been excellent. The green goddess dressing on the iceberg wedge is next level. It's my current favorite salad in town. The Alabama white bbq sauce grilled wings were tangy and sweet (and even better with a side of Cahaba hot sauce to dip them in). And the burgers...my goodness...obviously hand-patted, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and topped with all manner of deliciousness. The Burger of the Month for December was amazing. They have brunch on Sundays and $5 Bloody Marys and mimosas. Oh, and the staff was excellent! Our server was friendly and attentive. I look forward to next weekend returning for another amazing Sunday brunch/lunch!

As always our burgers were great. The fries are very good as well. They were very busy with church crowd, but we didn't have to wait too long. The seating is a little tight, but it's still a fun environment. I would recommend.

Local owned places are so unique and can be the best. This one was absolutely perfect. The ways the servers all were was perfect for real. They were all super nice and great servers. The food was amazingly delicious. This was a great place to sit and hang out with friends or even to sit and speak with another person beside you. Such a great great time here this evening.

Shrimp & Grits: excellent with a kick!

Hubby's fave. All about the food, babe, and he loves the Cajun kick to most dishes. Went for his birthday and they surprised him with an elaborate dessert with ice cream & chocolate drizzle that we all shared. The best dish was not for wimps: my daughters: Mudtown version of Hattie's Hot chicken over cheese grits with side of very spicy but delish Southern Greens! Runner up was Shrimp and Grits. Has a medium spice to it and diner rated it as top notch! Bday boy had bacon & jalapeño burger and house made chips and I had a fried green tomato BLT and house made chips, both delish rated an A-, chips are unique and delish! Ambiance still has cute beach side dive vibe with a big bar. Best thing this visit was the service from a lady that sometimes bartends. She was efficient, fast and helpful! I'll memorize her name next time to campaign for her raise! Bad parking and tiny enough to chat with neighbor tables. Keep up the good work!!!

Ruben and Tots

We heard that Mudtown had the best Ruben in the Birmingham metro area, so we went. My LOVES Rubens. She can confirm, the Ruben is the best in Birmingham. ...possibly Alabama. I had the Grouper strips basket. It was awesome too. We had a great server that didn't let us want for anything. So if you want a really cool, neighborhood bar that has great food, Mudtown is where you need to go.

It gives a great vibe for either a work dinner, a date night, owl or dinner with friends! It's fun and swanky but not over the top. They have a really attractive bar and they have a pizza kitchen that is open, which is always a cool touch. I try to handful of appetizers and I've got to recommend both the jerk cauliflower as well as the brussels sprouts and the Caesar salad was delicious as well. Also, the blistered Hungarian peppers are a must order if you'd like sausage! The meal that I had both times because it was that good was the spicy lamb rigatoni. I might just go back next week and get it again. I like that they have a wide variety of options whether you're looking for a gluten-free meal or something carb heavy like pizza or pasta, but they also have options to fit a variety of budgets from a casual dinner and a burger to more expensive entrées. The servers are very kind and are definitely educated in their wine and food offerings and very hospitable. Since this is located on Morris, a lot of people think parking is difficult down there, but apparently there is a parking lot in the back where you're able to get your ticket validated. I know some of my friends wish they would have known this before. I'll definitely be back and recommend this spot to others wanting a good meal!

We ordered the peel n eat shrimp and the burrata w/ bread pudding! The food was so good we failed to grab a pic. I can absolutely say the experience rates in the top 4 meals I've had in my 66 years on the planet! I was able to capture the beautiful pour of wine we had. Guys come see them! You'll enjoy it for sure. The ladies sitting next to us ordered two entrees each. They ate one and had one boxed to go...that's gotta tell ya something! Hats off to the TEAM at Wooden City! I'll be visiting again in August .....can't wait!!

This is a spot with a heavy regular rotation. The people of Mountain Brook/Vestavia are here for dinner. It's a specific crowd. Service was great, the waitstaff is very friendly and on top of things. My dad ordered the "Magic City Manhattan" -- I'm not normally a dark liquor person, but I thought this was fantastic. I think it was the pecan liquor which made it so good. We split the muscles appetizer, which was great. The broth was so warm, garlicky, acidic, perfect. Love. And the bread that came with was great, too. If I'm being picky, the bread services' butter could've been more room-temp and easier to spread. But that's me being extremely picky. We ordered the lamb chop entree to split, too. Again, great. This is a fantastic spot if you're not looking to travel downtown for dinner. Easy menu, crowd pleasing. Definitely suited for an older crowd, which can be harder to find in the downtown spots.

My guest tonight is a healthy eater, so the menu was perfect. Lots of farm to table options, vegetarian options, as well as fresh fish and other great proteins. We ended up having the seared tuna with soy pearls, yellow beets, feta and dates, and the spring salad with fried goat cheese, pistachios, apples and raspberries. Everything was fresh, well prepared and delicious. Service is always wonderful. Seating is limited so make reservations as early as possible. Bar seating available first come first served. There's a number of off-menu items so be sure to ask your server! My only complaint is that best tables are held for the "regulars;" so I guess it's time to become a regular at Foodbar.

The bowl is a very creative and i loved the concept but the execution just need a bit of tweaking. The bowl was just too greasy. And I don't think the grease was only coming from the pork. The farro was about 1 or 2 minutes overcooked for my taste; however, I would try it again maybe with just the egg. I hear great things about thw smash burger so I'll come back and try my luck. Some family friends from Huntsville swear by it and got it while staying with my mom in Bham, so we tried them out during my recent visit. I ordered us the Angel pizza. Had no idea Emmy's pizza was a Detroit style, which I love! The Angel comes with Ricotta, truffle cream, mushrooms, parsley pesto- all good things. The pizza was good and we enjoyed but this flavor was probably just a little too much cream so I'd check out another flavor next time or build my own. I could use more of a red sauce base for Detroit style. Did takeout from The Summit- was mostly quick in and out. Hot, Freshly made and the crispy edges I adore. I like how their two sizes are listed on the website as sixer and tener. It's def not cheap but I guess not horribly priced either. With multiple locations in Nashville maybe I'll try them again eventually, or just default to my favorite, Jets, again which is close to home. But if you want somewhere with Detroit still to go sit down and dine, Emmy Squared can be your move.

I called ahead and was told the reservation could not be updated, and that I would need to inform the host the day of and expect an additional wait time. One of my friends arrived early to notify the host stand since the rest of us were traveling an hour to get there. She was told the wait would be about 30 minutes, which we thought was reasonable. However, we ended up waiting almost an hour and were then told they could not seat us together. The host informed me they would seat 5 at one table and 6 at another. Keep in mind, we had a 3:00 PM reservation for 6 and it was approaching 4:00 PM. Because it was my sister's birthday and she wanted to sit with her three friends, we adjusted ourselves and sat 7 at the table of 5. The remaining guests were called to the other side of the restaurant, even though there was an empty booth for 4 right beside us. A lady in our party spoke with the Black manager, who handled the situation beautifully. She personally cleaned off the booth and had their server move them over to sit near us. That level of leadership and customer care did not go unnoticed. Unfortunately, the hostess at the front seemed agitated, and one employee even stated out loud that it was almost time for her to go and she was ready, in a rude tone. No one in my party responded, and I chose not to either, but it was disappointing. Now let me shift the tone. Our server, Georgia (also known as Jordan), WAS AMAZING. Absolutely phenomenal. She turned the entire experience around. She created a custom drink for me, guided us through menu options we ended up loving, kept both tables clean, and never let our drinks go empty. She was attentive, kind, patient, and professional the entire time. She surprised my sister with ice cream and sang Happy Birthday, which meant so much. We were literally collecting tip money like we were at an auction because we wanted to bless her the way she blessed us. I am 41 years old, and she is hands down one of the best servers I have ever had. Despite the rocky start with the reservation and seating, Georgia made us forget every frustration. Because of her, we will absolutely be back--and we will be asking for her every single time. Thank you, Georgia aka Jordan. You made the night special.
