Some friends and I came here to grab dinner and have a few drinks. You order drinks at the bar and then food orders are placed at the back counter. The bartender, Amanda was phenomenal! She was so very attentive and just flat out cool! It was a joy to interact with her. Drinks were spot on! Service was just great. The staff was really friendly and made us feel welcomed. Great experience! I ordered the pork plate with slaw and baked beans. So tasty!!! The pork was so flavorful. The sides were good as well. One of my friends complained that her collard greens were too salty but overall she enjoyed her smoked chicken plate. Another friend had fried green tomatoes and she ordered her babygirl a burger & fries. They too enjoyed their food. I really like this location. It's the perfect hangout for the warmer days ahead!

My uncle was in town to visit and wanted BBQ because he said that is just not something that they do well in Kentucky where he lives. Saw's is my go to when someone is visiting and we decide on BBQ. We decided on this location because of proximity to to other plans for the day. Plus gave me an excuse to do some shopping at the Shops of Grand River. This location shares space with Neighbor's Pies & Pints at The Backyard and I had been before to try the pizza. They have ample indoor & outdoor seating but it can get quite crowded at times. On this occasion at lunchtime on a Saturday there was a good crowd but still a good choice of seating available. Fairly typical setup for fast casual type. You order at the counter and take a number to your chosen seating and the food is brought out to you. All of the staff we interacted with was very pleasant and helpful. Based on a previous experience at another location I knew I wanted to get The Colonel (Sweet Tea Fried Chicken with Pimento & Cheese and Tomato on a Bun). Once again it did not disappoint. This time it seemed messier to eat as a sandwich, so I resorted to a knife & fork after a couple of bites. My side of French Fries were excellent. Seasoned well, not too crisp and not soggy. Another thing I knew I wanted as soon as we decided on Saw's was Banana Pudding for dessert. Just like Grandma used to make and a great way to top off the meal. My wife chose my other go to from Saw's, the Smoked Chicken sandwich with white sauce and pickles. She liked it as well even though the chicken was a little on the dry side. I personally like to add a little of the red sauce along with the white when I get it. My uncle satisfied his BBQ craving with the Pulled Pork Plate with sides of Greens and Baked Beans. He really liked it but said the Greens had more a of a kick to it than he expected. My aunt chose the Smoked Chicken plate with Cheese Grits (I don't recall the other side). No complaints but she wasn't expecting the chicken to be pulled and thought it would still be on the bone. She was very complimentary of the grits. Another big plus for this location is if you have someone in your group that just isn't in the mood for BBQ, you can also order off the Neighbor's menu. In fact often the same line is used for both.

Not gonna lie, I was a bit disappointed with my first experience here. I'd heard such great things! Unfortunately, I just wasn't impressed. The cashier was pretty quick and helpful. But the food, it was just lacking overall. I ordered the patty melt with a side of bbq pork rinds and a sweet tea to drink. We all know everyone is different about their sweet tea, but this tea wasn't nearly sweet enough. I had to add sugar to mine just to make it enjoyable. And whoever was mixing the tea had an unwelcoming attitude... The patty melt had a stiff, dry toasted bread, but the meat was fresh and juicy along with the toppings. The pork rinds were just disappointing. They had the option for original or bbq and even though I chose bbq, I didn't taste it at all. I wouldn't recommend anyone to come here. Maybe I've heard great things about other locations, but this one - I won't be returning to willingly. 2/5

These were the deviled eggs after I picked through and just ate pieces of the eggs (which were hard)

I think the deviled eggs had a peculiar taste. Deviled eggs can be an infamous side in BBQ restaurants so I hold the side dish at a remarkable high standard. Maybe switch the ingredients that's used for the stuffing. One of the ingredients is overpowering causing it to be a flop.

Great place with games and live music. Small neighborhood beers but good atmosphere. Also pitchers of beer of their finest neighborhood brew. A great family place and the live outside music is great.

We had a fabulous dinner here! We got a few different things...The pork and greens, shrimp and grits, smoked thigh plate, chicken pesto pizza and the BBQ Salad with smoked chicken. All of the entrees were great but the shrimp was very salty. We enjoyed our cocktails from the bar and the wonderful service. Great place to stop while shopping whether it's for a meal or just a beer!!!

Rusty's is hands down the best BBQ in Alabama, I drive over 50 miles at least three times a month or more to eat here. They offer up pork sandwiches, plates, ribs, brisket, cheeseburgers, a vegetarian BBQ, chicken, sausage, world famous collards, homemade pies and more along with a variety of sides. I don't eat vegetables so I double down on the fries, I cover them with their sweet BBQ sauce, which I also love on the meat. The serving size at first glance looks a little small but don't be fooled, it will fill you up along with the generous helping of whatever side you order. The last time Julie was with me she ordered the ribs with okra and mac & cheese, both were enough to feed a family of four. The ribs were fall off of the bone and cooked to perfection, not burned like some rib places around the area. As for me, like I said, I always order the pulled pork plate with double fries, sweet BBQ sauce all over both. I have tried the spicy BBQ sauce and at first taste it was a little hot for my taste buds, but over time I kept dipping my fries in it and once I got used to it, it was pretty good, I would not put it directly on the meat or fries. I also tried the house sauce, it was just a sauce, kinda like if you didn't want your BBQ plain, best I can describe it is like drinking water instead of anything with taste, it's something to wet your throat. They offer a white sauce but I did not try it. The sweet tea is also very good. The service is good as well, someone came out and checked on me as I was eating, they play the blues on the radio but not too loud, the decor is local with lots of hometown football and area sports decor. The only thing I did not see that makes a great BBQ joint a legendary BBQ joint is a picture of Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, all of the legendary BBQ joints in Alabama have a picture of the Bear. Rusty's offers ample indoor and outdoor dining and plenty of parking with handicap parking available. Now to the only negative, when I order I always emphasize that I want NO pickles on my plate, I can't stand pickles or pickle juice. Several times they have put pickles on my plate, it's just a couple of small pickles and I remove them but it's the fact that I point it out plainly when ordering and they still get it wrong. I don't let little things like that slide when reviewing restaurants. If you are a local and eat here alot be sure to put your phone number in when paying to earn points for your reward, it's only 5% off, but every little bit counts. Overall Rusty's hits a home run when it comes to BBQ in the state of Alabama, it's worth the drive. 5/5

For context, I'm a certified KCBS BBQ judge and run a small BBQ catering business. That doesn't make me special, but it does mean I know BBQ. Rodney Scott is well-known in the BBQ world for whole hog, so I've been looking forward to trying his food for a long time. Today was the day. I ordered the 3-meat plate with ribs, pulled pork, and turkey, plus two sides. Ribs: Excellent smoke flavor and seasoning, but very undercooked--they needed at least another hour on the smoker. I received three bones, managed to eat most of two, and left the third. Big disappointment. Turkey: Tender but dry, and it tasted like it had been sliced a while earlier and held. Very neutral flavor with no smoke or seasoning coming through. Just okay, but I'd skip it next time. Pulled pork: Completely underwhelming. Tender, but almost no flavor and none of the smoke I expected, especially after tasting the ribs. Mac and cheese: Grainy and not enjoyable. There are several reasons mac and cheese can turn grainy, but either way, I'd pass on it next time. Collard greens: Surprisingly good, but I was shocked they didn't have pepper juice available--a Southern staple with greens. I'd eat these again, but I'd bring my own pepper juice. Overall: I left disappointed. I mentioned to the staff--who were very friendly--that the meal wasn't good, but it was brushed off. With the level of anticipation I had for Rodney Scott's, this visit didn't come close to expectations. I don't see myself returning.

Had lunch today at Martin's BBQ Joint located at 3029 Pump House Road in Vestavia Hills, Alabama…read more It's actually in the Cahaba Heights area off of Highway 280. You order at the counter, which can be a little hectic for a first-timer. Luckily for me, I knew what I wanted and quickly found it on the big menu on the wall beside me. I later noticed that people were looking at handheld menus as you entered the restaurant. There was no one in front of me when I entered, so I didn't see those. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful in answering my questions. I ordered the pulled pork shoulder tray with two sides. If you have read my reviews, you know I only eat fries, so I doubled up the fries. You are given a number and can sit anywhere in their very big (for a BBQ joint) indoor dining area, or you can sit on a patio or outside. The walls are COVERED with pictures of old movie posters, country music stars, album covers, car tags, signs, and even a picture of the NWO (IYKYK). I didn't see the required Alabama BBQ joint picture of The Bear, Alabama football coach Paul Bryant, but with so many things on the wall, I'm sure it has to be there somewhere. There is a separate 'To-Go' spot for placing orders on the run. This also looked like a bar area as I saw advertising for alcohol. They also offer T-shirts and hats for sale if that is your thing. The menu consists of burgers, tacos, brisket, chicken, catfish, smoked chicken wings, BBQ nachos with just about any kind of side you can ask for, and pie for dessert. My order was brought to me in a timely manner. The BBQ is West Tennessee-style whole hog that Martin's cooks low and slow over hickory wood for up to 24 hours. The pulled pork is melt-in-your-mouth delicious, topped off with their special Jack's Creek BBQ sauce, on the table, which is a sweet vinegar and pepper-based sauce. I did see other sauces behind the counter, so I'm sure you just have to ask. The portions were just right for me. The fries are real cut potatoes that have been peeled. I doubled up, and that was enough to feed a family of four. Next time I will just ask for one side so as not to waste fries. The Jack's Creek sauce was great poured over my fries; it is water-based and not thick, and that is how I like my sauce. The sweet tea wasn't as sweet as some places, but I'm not complaining; it was good, and the day was hot. There seemed to be a lot of staff working. I guess it can be busy on Saturdays for lunch. I visited around 2:30 pm, and it was not crowded when I arrived but picked up as my time went on. The staff didn't have anything to say as several walked past me while doing random things. Not that it's a bad thing; I just always acknowledged customers with a "how ya doing?"--little things. The music was a mix of classic rock, soft 70s to hair metal, set at a decent volume. I don't mind being able to hear the radio, but maw maw and paw paw may complain that it was too loud. The parking lot may fill up with a big dinner crowd as there is a business next door that shares the parking lot. There is handicap parking available. Overall, Martin's offered a cool atmosphere for BBQ and a relaxing meal. They offer live music some nights (check their website), and it seems to be a great place for socializing in a casual setting. 5/5 -Kevin

My wife and I ate at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint for the first time today, and we have found our new favorite BBQ joint. We enjoy watching Pat Martin's tv show, "Life of Fire," so we came with very high expectations. They surpassed them. When we stepped out of the car the smoke BBQ smell was amazing. I ordered a pulled pork shoulder sandwich and asked them to top it with coleslaw and had a side of mac & cheese and bought a second side, cornbread hoecake. Martha ordered the sliced brisket sandwich with a side of baked beans. I started with the mac & cheese. It was delicious with plenty of cheese and baked to perfection with a crispy cheese top. Really delicious. The cornbread hoecake was incredible it looks like and has the consistency of a pancake. You must order that when you go. Then I picked up the pulled pork shoulder sandwich and sunk my teeth in it. Oh, my! Pulled pork at its best. I added the Jack's Creek vinegar-based sauce to it, and wow, that added even more outstanding flavor to it. I've found my new favorite BBQ sauce. Martha thoroughly enjoyed her sliced brisket sandwich. We both had a bite of each others sandwiches and both were mouth-satisfying delicious. The brisket was perfect. The baked beans were very tasty, too. Everything was about as perfect as you can get at a BBQ joint. Pat Martin knows his BBQ, just as he displays on his show "Life of Fire." Before I could say anything, Martha said, "This is the best BBQ I've ever had. Let's come back for lunch tomorrow." She didn't have to twist my arm. We still like many other delicious BBQ restaurants in Birmingham, and will eat at them again, but Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint is our new favorite. In a city where BBQ is king, Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint sits atop the throne. We returned the next day for lunch. : Martha enjoyed the mouth watering and mouth satisfying Pulled Pork Sandwich topped with coleslaw and deliciously seasoned and crisp homemade chips. I threw down on a half slab of fall off the bone full flavored ribs. I got half of the ribs Memphis dry rub and the other half wet (St. Louis style). They were amazing! My sides were broccoli salad (because I'm a health nut) and homemade fries. And, of course, the delicious cornbread hoecake. We can't wait to come back to B'ham again to try more delicious food here at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint.
