I'm in the Trussville area often and have noticed this place for a while, but today was the first time I finally had the chance to try it. For context, I'm a certified KCBS BBQ judge and run a small BBQ catering business. That doesn't make me special, but it does mean I know BBQ. Rodney Scott is well-known in the BBQ world for whole hog, so I've been looking forward to trying his food for a long time. Today was the day. I ordered the 3-meat plate with ribs, pulled pork, and turkey, plus two sides. Ribs: Excellent smoke flavor and seasoning, but very undercooked--they needed at least another hour on the smoker. I received three bones, managed to eat most of two, and left the third. Big disappointment. Turkey: Tender but dry, and it tasted like it had been sliced a while earlier and held. Very neutral flavor with no smoke or seasoning coming through. Just okay, but I'd skip it next time. Pulled pork: Completely underwhelming. Tender, but almost no flavor and none of the smoke I expected, especially after tasting the ribs. Mac and cheese: Grainy and not enjoyable. There are several reasons mac and cheese can turn grainy, but either way, I'd pass on it next time. Collard greens: Surprisingly good, but I was shocked they didn't have pepper juice available--a Southern staple with greens. I'd eat these again, but I'd bring my own pepper juice. Overall: I left disappointed. I mentioned to the staff--who were very friendly--that the meal wasn't good, but it was brushed off. With the level of anticipation I had for Rodney Scott's, this visit didn't come close to expectations. I don't see myself returning. read more

I have come to the conclusion that I just don't care for this RS location!! Food has been subpar both times I've come here. Each time being 11 months a part so the newness should have worn off my now! My visit on 8/23/23 was during lunchtime. I went inside to place my to go order. It wasn't crowded so I was helped right away. So service was cool. I was even asked if I wanted a drink while I waited for my order. Nice gesture and good customer service. That's where the good ends!!' I get home and my ribs are cold and yet again greens are salty as ________ (you fill in the blank with your own word) I won't be back to this location!!! How does anyone in such a bbq rich state like this place?! I've tried it multiple times, thinking the first time was a fluke. Nope. Constantly spitting out ligaments and bones is NOT good BBQ! Ate here for the first time with the family and the experience was AMAZING! Everyone was so incredibly sweet and friendly! Grayson took our order and checked on us consistently to guarantee we were happy. His personality was adorable. It's so nice to go to a restaurant and actually get the best customer service. I got the brisket sandwich and slathered it with the Bama sauce, which was 10/10! My first time ever trying brisket went beyond expectations of deliciousness lol. The kids wanted to buy some banana pudding and they were given a giant bowl of it for free! Best banana pudding I've ever tried. We've been here 3 times now. The food is always good but each time there have been significant errors in our order, such as leaving bacon on a sandwich when asked to take it off, bringing out the wrong food completely, or adding items to our order we didn't ask for like extra sides. They're always willing to fix the order but the number of mistakes is concerning. The weirdest part is the service. The workers come by the table MANY times in a rotation asking the same questions. We had to tell 3 different workers we were fine and didn't need anything 6 times in under 15 minutes. I really appreciate the dedication to providing customer service but there is such a thing as over doing it, especially when it prevents you from having a conversation with the people you're eating with and becomes frustrating. It would be great service if one worker was checking on each table and maybe monitoring the table to not ask redundant questions (e.g., asking to take our plates when we're still clearly eating). read more

We love Rodney Scott's food. We go often to our Trussville location. The best part is the personal experience we get. We were greeted by Anna-Claire and Haylee. They answered questions and checked on how we were doing several times during the visit. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, a salad, and the fries. The pork was delicious, and perfectly seasoned but I especially loved the bun, so soft and fresh. My husband got the same thing but instead of fries he got Mac and Cheese. I had a bite. It was delicious, but I loved my season fries. Everyone should get over to Rodney Scott's if you want great barbecue. read more

We've been waiting to give Rodney Scott's a try for a while now since they've been packed since they opened. We came in on a Friday night and tried them out. The staff were very friendly and attentive. I'm not usually a fan of vinegar sauce, but these sauces on the tables were better than the most that I've had. I got the pulled pork plate with mac and cheese and french fries. My wife got the catfish, and she ended up sharing it with our daughter. Our daughter definitely preferred the catfish over the pulled pork! She also liked the hush puppy that came with it. My wife liked them both as well.I liked the pork a lot, and whatever they season their french fries with is delicious. I'm a big fan of their fries now! I really want to try their brisket, though it is a tad expensive, but if you know me, you know I'm a big fan of brisket, so I'll have to try it at some point. I'm sure we'll be back soon! read more

This spot became very popular thanks to its first location in Avondale. Back then, it offered top-quality BBQ, real French fries, and great local beers -- what more could you ask for? Unfortunately, a few months later, the quality took a noticeable dip, prices went up, and they quickly shut down the Avondale location. I really hope this place can maintain a high level of quality and avoid raising prices too much. The vibes at the Avondale location, with its authentic BBQ scenery, were unmatched. The restaurant is nice! The dining was filled with people on a Thursday around 5:00pm You walk up to register to place your order. Half of the restaurant is called The Pit. Where they cook the wonderful meats! We have never tried Rodney Scott's before and wondered how they would fare in this BBQ restaurant rich neighborhood. Still 5 stars. Ordered online and picked it up for dinner tonight. The ribs were just as good tonight as they were the first time two weeks ago. This time, we got the half rack rib plate with the hush puppies and collards. The hush puppies are so tasty, with or without the honey butter. We also got the family pulled pork meal with 6 buns, potato salad and cole slaw. I cannot comment personally on the potato salad because it is just not something I eat. So I will tell you that the others who ate it said it was wonderful. We were gonna order the baked beans but they were out. The sauces that came with the meal and the rib plate were great too. As a side note, when you order online, it asks you which sauce you would like and you can request a few samples of each in the special request box while ordering. For those that complained by saying there was no sauce on the pork or it was left off, most places don't put sauce on their bbq anymore because not everyone likes sauce on their bbq. Honestly, the ribs have an amazing rub and were smoked to perfection, so no sauce required. And the pork is good without it too. But if you would check your food before leaving, you might not make it all the way home before realizing the restaurant got something wrong or didn't put enough sauce for your liking. Second time eating at this location. You haven't had great BBQ until you've eaten at a Rodney Scott restaurant! The ribs, brisket, pork, and chicken are amazing. Generous portions of meat on all. The sides are fantastic too. Mac and cheese, potato salad, black eyed peas just like your grandmother cooked them. Banana pudding in on point too Carson and Anna-Claire both waited on us and were awesome in doing their jobs, making sure we had everything we'd ordered and that it was good. The Burger Man with Best Burgers in America Association, was out doing a BBQ Day, and I saw this place and decided to have lunch there. WOW! What an awesome BBQ Joint! The BBQ was not mushy, smoked to perfection, and the sides were just as good. I got the "Whole Hog BBQ Plate with Tater Salad, and Onion Rings, and my wife got the BBQ Baked Potato and talked about Great Quality food, this is the place to come to. My friend & I ate lunch at this location today, 6/28/25. We were greeted, where you order, by the nicest young man with the biggest smile on his face. His name was Raphael. He is an outstanding employee and impressive teenager. He will go far in life on his journey to become a neurosurgeon. Yes we talked to him for quite a while and learned many impressive things about him. The food was excellent! I got the pork barbecue plate with collards and black eyed peas plus a piece of cornbread. The meats here were succulent and tender. The collards and cornbread were easily the very best I have ever tasted. All of the bbq sauces were great, my personal favorite was the white sauce. The service was exceptional. The Mac and cheese and Cole slaw were good but I wouldn't get them again. They were both a little dry for my liking, but these are things I compare to my own recipes, and so I'm very picky about them. The hush puppies are very different from what I'm used to (no onion, corn, jalapeño) but were very good of you think of them as cornbread fritters. I actually preferred the cornbread, it is so good, so I likely wouldn't get the hush puppies again just because that's too many carbs for one meal, imo. I would absolutely come back here!!!! I can't wait to try the whole hog bbq, the baked beans, and the banana pudding. I hear the fries are also better than average. They had a pop up shop in front of the "Coming Soon" location recently. I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich combo with a side of Macaroni & Cheese. Sandwich had a large amount of pulled pork that was moist and delicious. Included sauces were the original and a vinegar base. I was not a fan of the vinegar based sauce, but that may just be me. The original was OK. Macaroni & Cheese was think and creamy with plenty of cheesy goodness. All in all, this definitely whet my appetite for the full menu and I look forward to their opening even though the area is not without it's share of BBQ restaurants. May have a new favorite or at least a contender. read more

The food is always delicious here! And fresh. The best part about Rodney Scott's though is the atmosphere. From the minute you walk in you are greeted and made to feel like you belong there. Everyone is so nice and accommodating, even to our toddler! Not to mention they have the best booster seats. When they found out it was my toddlers birthday, they sang to him and gave him a sweet treat. It was so precious! The prices are a little high, but the servings are hefty. Barbecue nothing to write home about but I will give it another try for another cut of meat maybe ribs. I had the salad with pulled pork, ranch is nothing special. The croutons were made from cornbread I believe and were soooo good. The collard greens were good, potato salad was very good. The kids burger was very very good as it was as a smash burger essentially. I didn't study to menu too well (rare for me) but I hope they have a smash burger on the menu for folks who aren't huge BBQ people. The sauces are very loose vinegar based, and not impressive.The ambiance reminds me of an old school bbq joint. You order up front then find a seat, not my favorite way to order. Love the look and feel of the place, as everyone was super friendly. As with Dimitri's, we are in the south, make sure you have excellent sweet tea, fresh lemonade, good ice and homemade ranch!!
