My friend and I took a road trip to Barber Motorsports Museum in Leeds, AL last week (an amazing museum and motorcycle heaven for enthusiasts) and I volunteered to find us the best bbq in the greater Birmingham area for dinner after we toured the museum. I decided on Rusty's based on the reviews and its close proximity (4 miles from Barber). I used to do business in Birmingham weekly and am quite familiar with its well-deserved reputation for having some of the finest bbq in the nation, so the bar was set very high. Rusty's did not disappoint my high standards and in fact, this was the very best bbq I've ever had (and I've eaten bbq all over the south and Texas). The pork bbq sandwich was utter perfection (even better with their superb white sauce) and so were the sides - delicious, perfectly prepared fried okra and the best deviled eggs I've ever had. Rusty's staff was very friendly, the prices quite reasonable, and the restaurant was clean. If I lived closer, I would be a regular but that would wreck my mostly plant-based diet! However, the next time I am in Leeds, I will definitely be back. I give Rusty's my highest recommendation. If you are going to Barber, this is a must stop. read more

So Rusty's is a cool thirty minutes from my place, but it is SO worth the wait. Some anonymous quotes from my visit today: "These ribs put Dreamland to shame" "These are the best ribs EVER" These are not over-statements. We started out with sandwiches: I got the regular pulled pork, he got the regular pulled chicken, and we split a side of fries. He finished his sandwich in ~2 minutes, so he determined we needed more food on the table. He went and got a half slab of ribs, and he asked to go ahead and bring a to-go box for them since we probably weren't going to finish all of them. Oh, but we were wrong. Rusty's has all the signatures of a really good classic hole in the wall American BBQ joint. For example, the exterior is outfitted with a dead potted plant on an abandoned concrete patio. To add further to its exterior decor, a solo cinder block was just sitting there for no apparent reason, perhaps for seating? *** NOTE: I've been told the patio has been renovated since my visit a month ago. As if on cue, just as I'd finished surveying the lay of the land my sense of smell caught what I can only describe as smoky porkoliciousness wafting in the air. The smell seductively invited me inside as if it new all my weaknesses and planned on taking full advantage of my lack of self control. The exterior theme continued inside where interior walls were overly populated with vintage signs, college license plate decals and various forms of classic BBQ pig art. Old vinyl possibly from a 1970's bar covered the booths. Still, with all this BBQ foreplay I found myself highly disappointed in the dryness of the meat and the mediocrity of the sides. THE SCENE I'm a pork spare ribs fan! If I were a dish, delicious well seasoned ribs would be me on a plate. While I enjoy other forms of BBQ such as briskets, pulled pork, pork butts, brats and chicken, it ain't a BBQ joint if they don't have ribs! My yelp buddy Trevor W swore on all things holy that this place was worth the 2 hour drive from Atlanta and to his credit they ALMOST rose to those lofty expectations. It was somewhere around 6pm when I arrived and it was not entirely all my fault for getting there so late on a Saturday. I got caught up visiting a few covered bridges and lost track of time. Couldn't help myself! I enjoyed the hospitality and southern charm of several people I had the pleasure of bumping into so much that my covered bridge tour took far longer than I anticipated. Not to mention I didn't feel rushed because crossing the border of Alabama from Georgia is moving into a new time zone and I gained an additional hour! Whoooo hoooo! Have you ever noticed that when you find yourself with bonus time it never stretched as far as you think it will? THE BBQ Anyways, back to these dry ribs. I am certain I would have really enjoyed the ribs had they been fresh off the grill instead of sitting in a warming bin probably for hours. I ordered a full slab and the thicker side was tender and flavorful while the side where the meat was thinner was like jerky. Actually, the meat on the very tip of the ribs could have been used as tire treads it was so rubbery. WHITE BBQ SAUCE What intrigued me the most and inspired my visit was the fact that Rusty's make a white BBQ sauce. That's right, you heard me, a WHITE mayonnaise based BBQ sauce that I just had to taste for myself. I was hoping it would become my favorite new discover for 2015, but unfortunately it was just too weird for this traditional BBQ lovers tastes. I placed the sauce on 2 bones in highly anticipation of how much I would enjoy it since I love mayo, but the flavor just didn't go well with BBQ. Not wanting to give up I force myself to eat the second bone, but in the end I opted for the sweet sauce instead. I would best describe the flavor of the white sauce as a tangy tzatziki you'd find on gyros, which is awesome for gyros... but not BBQ. FINAL THOUGHTS If my slab had been served hot off the grill (or within reasonable proximity), these ribs surely would have matched the high praise that prompted my visit. The flavor was there but the ribs I got likely sat in their heated sauna bath a little too long. As for the sides, the sweet flavor of the beans was overpowered by vinegar and the deviled eggs were just 'meh'. The mac n' cheese they allowed me to sample before I placed my order was amazing. However, there were several orders before mine and I literally got the final scrapings of the day (even though they weren't due to close for another 3 hours). Even with these small setbacks I can totally see how Rusty's could become one of my favorite BBQ joints, but on this day they sorta missed the mark. SIDE NOTE: The owner contacted me the day after this review was posted with a kind response apologizing for my experience. So kind in fact that it has prompted me to make plans to return. It's a LONG drive, but I'm willing to do it simply because I'm a sucker for mom and pop restaurants. Not to mention they won best Mom & Pop BBQ in the state in the Alabama BBQ Battle. This place definitely deserves a Good, Bad, Ugly listing.... GOOD- SMELL. As soon as you pull up into the parking lot, you're immediately greeted with the smell of cooking meat over fire. God, that always lets you know your taste buds are in for a treat. FOOD. 5 stars for the food. Ribs were amazing. Like everyone's been saying: fall off the bone tender. Surprised the sauce isn't actually on the meat but having it on the side was cool. We got a chance to try all the sauces. Sweet and original were my fave. Not a fan of the white at all (tasted like tartar sauce), but glad for the experience. Great homemade sides: deviled eggs (awesome- needed a dash of paprika), potato salad (perfect amount of mayo), and two types of baked beans: sweet and spicy (Sweet was earthy and really good. Spicy had a nice aftertaste.) DESSERTS. Homemade pies. BEST coconut cream pie I've ever had. Found out it was a family recipe. You can definitely taste the love in there. The chocolate silk was definitely not of the no-baked variety. And my peanut butter pie was SICK; it was so good. Normally I don't like peanut butter pies because one bite, you feel like a lead weight has been dropped on your tummy. But their pie was light and fluffy and sooo good. The very best of Reeses peanut butter cups rolled into a homemade graham cracker crust. ROSEMARY BUSH. Right by the front door, there's a HUGE rosemary bush, carrying the scent of fresh rosemary into the air. We all stopped to smell the...rosemary. And it was awesome! Sure this place must smell divine in the summer. BAD- BATHROOM. Single stall. Old. Not very clean. Has definitely seen better days. Kicker was all that rust (at least I hope it's rust) *right* under the handle. Quite unsettling. UGLY- RACISM. Oh yeah, racism is still very alive and kicking in lil ol' Leeds, AL. Granted growing up as a POC in the South, it's something that I've had some first-hand experiences with. I can't help but be a little wary whenever I go to Southern Small Town, USA but honestly, I didn't think foodspotting AND yelp wouldn't have mentioned a HUGE side order we received there- free of charge. Background- I went there with two other friends: a white Hispanic girl and a black girl. As soon as we got in the door, my black friend was immediately given a disdainful look. We all ignored it since we were all starving, were just driving through and wanted to eat some of that delicious smelling meat we were smelling miles away. We place our order then go to find our seats in the dining room. The only other person in the place (older white guy- sure he's a regular) had this look of shock when he saw us go into the place. Glared at us the entire time we were getting our drinks then was barely concealing his anger when we sat down in the booth behind his. He immediately went to the other side of the room. KICKER: food comes. We inhale the wonderful smells and was just starting to really relax into the meal and the wonderful home-cooking when Rusty's mom shows up at our table. She was the one that had rung us up but was now checking on our table. She asked how we found out about the place. We immediately said yelp and foodspotting. Brief chitchat about the awesomeness of yelp then tells us that there's a BBQ contest throughout all of AL. She gives us a card with the website and instructions on how to vote. Handed the card to me and my Hispanic friend and THREW the card at my black friend. This was also after my black friend, who had the most interest in the contest, was asking her lots of questions about the contest. Questions were ignored and no eye contact given. We definitely left with a sour taste on our mouth. Normally Rusty's would the ideal place for me to visit. Mom and pop place, home cooking, family recipes, lots of love and pride in their ingredients and end product. The other servers were great. Very sweet and friendly. Rusty even came by our table to check up on us and told us bye when we were leaving. HOWEVER, Rusty's mom was our "server" for most of our experience. And judging from the reaction of their other customer that night (and from looking at all the other reviewers online), it's obvious they don't get a lot of non-whites that come in there to eat. And after this experience, we can definitely see why. My black friend was definitely not welcomed there. So to know that a simple detour off the interstate can cause you to step back 70 years in time was something that we didn't expected when we stopped for dinner that night. Eating our way across America is a passion. In the last decade we've been to more than 300 BBQ spots in The States and many of which are on countless "best of" and "Travel Channel" lists, most of which are overrated and don't belong. Having been to Birmingham a few dozen times we've tried most of the famous spots: Full Moon, Dreamland, Jim N Nicks, Saw's Juke Joint and so on. No one has ever recommended Rusty's to us. Not the folks we know that grew up in the region. No one. Meanwhile, we saw it while searching through BBQ restaurant lists and decided to forgo the trip to Saw's BBQ and Miss Mryas and try Rusty's instead. Rusty's isn't your traditional sit down BBQ spot. It reminds me of a place you'd see Boss Hog walk into on the Dukes of Hazard. It still has that old school country feel, local service and actually the inside reminds me of something I'd see in an 80s movie. There's culture here. Keep in mind, you aren't coming here for fancy table service or nice plates, a white tablecloth and silverware. This is paper towels and plastics. But, who cares, we came here for good BBQ, not high end dishware. And, in no way were we disappointed. Rusty's a place that belongs on everyone's Alabama BBQ Tour list. It reminded us of a old Dairy Queen like you'd see in the movie Footloose now turned into a BBQ spot. The food is affordable and portions are generous. We dove into one of the Samplers for 2. It was $30, but we go to try almost every meat on the menu. And, let me tell you, while the plates aren't fancy and the decor isn't shiny and new, the BBQ can stand toe to toe with most of the South's better smokehouses. Topping that list was the smoked sausage and Rusty yours is the best I've had. We couldn't believe anyone could serve a sausage that literally melts in your mouth (it's way better than what Dreamland serves). Next up: the turkey tasted like one that mama cooked on thanksgiving, complete with that juicy and smoke flavor. On the other hand, even three hours later as I write this, I can still taste the chicken. Wow. It's going to be hard to find a plate with a bird this flavorful. As for the ribs you could taste the smoke in each bite and unlike many competitors they use a dry rub, enabling you to add your favorite style sauce rather than being forced to eat the house they are often downed in. The pulled pork is overshadowed the rest of the these meats, but holds its own. On one the things that sets BBQ spots aside from others is the sauce. Fortunately, Rusty's offers four choice, giving options to multiple taste buds. House, sweet, spicy, white bring a contrast of flavors stemming from mayonnaise (white), vinegar, tomato, etc. Our favorite was the spicy, which isn't that spicy, but provided an extra kick. If there's any let down it would be the sides. They are average, like you'd get in most BBQ spots. The sides at Jim N Nicks and Full Moon (and defintely Saw's) are much better, but Rusty's meat is top-notch. We also liked the fresh sweet tea and lemonade (rather than Countrytime, which you often find in the South). If you ate the pile we split there will be no room for dessert. Meanwhile, you can do what we did and grab a few slice of pie to go. Keep in mind, these pies are made in house daily. We grabbed pecan and pumpkin and a Reese's. And, don't forget the banana pudding. It's a close second to Dreamland. read more

Found this gem thanks to Yelp after leaving the races at Barber Motorsports Park and apparently it is well known to the drivers and Indy staff alike. While dining after the race, Charlie Kimball dropped in for dinner and hung out with the owner Rusty for a bit. He even signed some memorabilia like several other Indy stars who dropped by over the weekend did. The staff here are super nice and the restaurant is quite spacious with large booths and several round tables that can seat a good sized party. Easy access to Hwy 20 in both directions. Now I'll be honest, I've had barbeque from most parts of the South, but for some reason had never experienced Northern Alabama barbeque and the White Barbeque sauce. What a treat! I always order the same way when I try a new barbeque joint: give me what you do best! I loaded up a half and half plate of ribs and pulled pork with spicy beans and deviled eggs. Staff brought it over and told me about the 4 sauces on the table: house, spicy, sweet, and that white barbeque sauce. Now I've had tomato and vinegar based barbeque before and am quite partial to it, but oh what a wonderful concoction of spice and texture Rusty has created. I was very pleased with how the sauce accentuated the pork and didnt drown the flavor. And the White sauce, well my Alabama friends said it's a staple (of which they apparently never told me). It was very unique and quite good. A vinegar and mayo base with mild spices to create a remoulade consistency. It paired well with both the ribs and pulled pork and a nice find all the way around. The spicy beans have a really nice kick, but not in a burning way. The pulled pork came with both tender and bark bits and was so wonderfully pink with the right amount of smoke. They do pork very well. The ribs were incredibly tender, just pulled right off the bone. Quite a bit of meat on them compared to most and very juicy. Tried the various sauces and even mixed them up a bit too. Was very pleased with the overall flavors created and will certainly recommend and head back this way! Little hole in the wall, off the beaten path but well worth it! I had the smoked chicken and creamy slaw. My son had the 'fall off the bone' ribs and the hubs had Turkey sandwich. The BBQ sauce was tasty! I loved the sweet sauce and the hubs like the spicy one. Since the food was so good we decided to try the peanut butter pie and the gooey cake. Yummy! Disclaimer - I'm not a professional food critic; I just love food. The Food: I had to meet someone in Leeds, so I searched out a BBQ joint. As soon as I arrived, the smell of BBQ hit me in the parking lot. I tried both styles of coleslaw. One is vinegar based, and one is a creamier version, and neither were finely chopped, so expect more of a stringed style. I've had a few styles of coleslaw that were in a creamier format, and they're typically sweet. Rusty's has some of their good white sauce mixed in with it, so don't expect a sweet flavor. The vinegar-based isn't as sour flavored as I'm used to. I believe it had onions mixed it with it, so it almost had a tangier flavor moreso than sour. Either way, they were both delicious. I combined the two with a brisket sandwich, and some fries. The fries were great, and the brisket wasn't bad. I usually have brisket as a plate vs a sandwich, so that might explain why it was cut thicker. It was on the tougher side, but nothing too serious. The flavor was jam-packed with smokiness. It also included 2 pieces of white bread. All in all, the food was a treat, and I'd come back for more. I'm ashamed that I didn't try their sweet tea or a piece of pie. The place: Just your basic little BBQ joint. The walls and ceiling were decorated with memorabilia of the local high school, music posters, and lots of automobile/motorcycle themed decorations. The first time I ever had Rusty's, I thought I think was going to be able to make it a BBQ staple. Wasn't I wrong! The last 2 times I have had it can be described as major disappointment. Today's offer of the sampler which had ribs, pork, chicken, okra, and beans was particularly dreadful. All the meat was too dry. The 4 sauces helped but couldn't save it. The okra, which plentiful, wasn't soft inside and had some stems to chew on. The only saving grace was the beans which were phenomenal. I have had the best of Rusty's but my last 2 times here will make me question about passing other BBQ joints on the way. read more

Rusty's was very good pulled pork and jalapeño cornbread. Creamy coleslaw wasn't as sweet as I'm used to (eastern NC), but my traveling partner had the marinated slaw and loved it. My mom and I swung by here on a whim to give it a try. I was very surprised to see jackfruit on the menu! For those who don't know, jackfruit is a meat alternative for people who are plant based! The menu didn't offer jackfruit as an option to add to potatoes, but when I asked the cashier she said they could do a jackfruit potato. I had no expectations and was very pleased! The jackfruit had great flavor! The potato was nicely baked. I was very happy and ate the whole thing. My only complaint is that it came with a slaw on top of the potato. I don't like slaw and had to pick it off. If I had known it had slaw on it, I would have asked for no slaw. That being said, if you like slaw it looked like it would be good. We sat outside in the sunshine at the umbrella tables and they brought our food out to us. All in all I would definitely come back! read more

Many of my coworkers are fans of Rusty's but for some reason I had never tried this restaurant. I called to order our meals so they would be ready when I arrived at the drive through. For one meal I ordered a BBQ sandwich with sweet sauce, mac and cheese, and sweet baked beans. For the other I ordered BBQ no bun with spicy sauce, fried okra, and onion rings. Let me start by saying the onion rings didn't even make it home with me. The minute I put the bag in the car they were calling my name! One peek inside and I was a goner. They were huge and fresh and delicious. Everything but the BBQ sandwich, onion rings, and fried okra was packaged in styrofoam cups and we were amazed that even after my trek from Leeds to Chelsea the food was still steaming hot. The sweet baked beans were some of the best we've ever eaten. The mac and cheese was tasty with the addition of just a little salt. The fried okra was good but was not the star of the side dishes show but NOTHING could beat those onion rings (sorry, no photo since they didn't last through the ride home.) Let me say the spicy BBQ sauce is delicious but it is definitely spicy. I am a spicy food lover and it had quite a kick. We are sold and will definitely return. read more

We came across Rusty's on accident and decided to stop in to try a local spot. This is your classic counter-service BBQ joint. I had the pork sandwich and onion rings and they were both very good. The sandwich had a really good amount of meat on it and was simply prepared with pickles and a bit of homemade BBQ sauce. The onion rings were necessary and thick and perfectly battered and fried. My wife had the turkey sandwich and green beans and was happy with both. For dessert we grabbed a piece of chocolate pie. It was topped with a small bit of whipped cream, which allowed the filling and the crust to take the spotlight. This is a place that we'll likely try again! read more

Hidden Gem! In all fairness I'm not in Leeds often, so really anything in the area could be considered a hidden gem by me. That being said after having been at Barber Motorsports Park all morning (that review is coming soon) we went to grab a bite to eat and gas up for some additional races. As you walk through the door you are greeted by the smoky smell filling the restaurant, which was the first confirmation we had picked someplace good! Typical section of BBQ with both plates and sandwiches available all at a pretty good price. I went for the BBQ Pork Sandwich with a side of fries. Note, sandwiches come in regular and large sized. Regular was plenty of food, but if your hungry the large is a minimal upcharge. Food came out quick, and there were 5 of us total. The sandwich was spot on! great flavored pork and the BBQ sauce was awesome too. Would have no problem ordering this again or trying anything else from the menu. Table has three different BBQ sauces the house, sweet, and spicy. Spicy was really good but several people at my table thought it was a little too much. The staff is good and friendly. I'm rating them two stars instead of three because the food is already over rated enough. When you have R&R and Landmark near by, I don't see how people rate this a best BBQ. I mean, this place wins rewards, and just not even good. We ordered about $75 of different bbq and sides to try them out since my wife and I like to try out new BBQ places. Even the sides are sub-par. I am from out of state and wanted to try some local bbq. This spot absolutely fit the bill, multiple bbq sauces at the table, white bread with the plate and plenty of iced tea. The food however was pretty standard - I got the brisket plate with Mac and fried okra. The brisket was dry and tough, I broke my plastic fork trying to cut it; the Mac and cheese tasted like it was from a box but the fried okra was on a whole other level. It had the perfect crunch and the inside texture was perfect. I would honestly come back purely for the fried okra side. My wife and I were looking for a place to eat lunch and found this little barbecue restaurant to be outstanding. We ordered the sampler plate for two and every item was first class, sweet baked beans, creamy coleslaw, delicious collard greens, brisket, chopped pork, ribs, and barbecue chicken with french fries. The jalapeño cornbread muffins added a spicy treat. We ended the meal with their homemade banana pudding and left full and happy. I just stopped by for a quick lunch today. I try to eat here at least once a month. My favorite meal is the pulled chicken plate with two sides and bread for less than $10! I usually get the spicy baked beans and creamy coleslaw. The people working are always so friendly and make sure you have everything you need. The atmosphere is great too. Lots of sports, racing, and blues music memorabilia on the walls. They also usually have blues music playing in the background. Rusty's is just a great small town BBQ joint.
