My family and I have been coming here for years. It's a lovely bakery that's family owned and has two separate locations (Maspeth&Glendale). They have always had fresh well baked Italian goods as well as imported Italian goods. The service is always quick and easy even on holidays and the workers are for most part friendly. I purchased mini-eclairs for client luncheon and they were STALE. This was NOT the first time either. I've been going to this bakery for over 48 years. This is the VERY first time I called to complain. When I called this morning, the Owners would not reimburse nor offer something in exchange, unless I "brought them back as proof" claiming she "just ate one from this morning's tray and they are fresh; and the same ones I purchased yesterday morning." She then stated, "these are the same ones being served for Easter Sunday." Okay, so if you claim to serve "fresh pastries" and Easter Sunday is a week away, HOW on earth can they be "fresh pastries?" Nice local bakery. Fresh desserts. Fresh baked breads. This institution has been around for a few decades. They have another satellite outlet in Ridgewood I believe. Only downside is they are little pricey in comparison when it comes to pastries. And it's not you get what you pay for in this case. There are plenty of yummy bakeries in the areas (Joe's on Metropolitan) and Continental (grand avenue) that charge 10-20% less. However, we like their Seminole rolls for sandwiches so we will continue to buy them It is what it is. read more

DIGUSTING! Found hair in my cheesecake, not once but TWICE! I thought I'd give them a second chance and it happened again! Both times they refused to admit that it was them and instead said it was our hair even though we don't have blonde hair and it was literally inside the cake cooked within. NASTY! UNACCEPTABLE! They have small tables and chairs for relaxing with a cup of coffee and pastries. The frosting on their two varieties of donuts looks super tidy, immaculate and restrained. Don't judge a book by its cover. Or, to make a more accurate analogy, don't even judge a book's cover by how it looks. Because objects on donut could be way sloppier than they appear. The frosting looks hella restrained, but somehow there's enough lurking on one of their relatively small donuts to smear itself all the way from my left cheek to my right armpit. The coffee and cookies might be good, but the ladies behind the counter are rude. Early 2008: back when I used to take the Q39 to work, I would sometimes get coffee at Russo's. First time I ever entered this place...as soon as I ordered my coffee, the nasty fat lady informed me that I was not to drink coffee inside the bakery. Now, on to the reason why two stars; service, manners, and general kindness. There's a heavyset woman with glasses who looks at you like if you just insulted her by even being present in the shop. It's a chore for her to hand me a loaf and take money I guess! I have a feeling she's not a fan non Italians, just a hunch. I work nearby so sometimes for office parties we pick up a cake or some treats from here if we didn't plan enough ahead. I've had the tiramisu from here too many times to count and every time I'm left disappointed. I don't know why it keeps surprising me that I don't like it because I LOVE tiramisu! The lady fingers are not soaked in enough espresso and very little mascapone cheese is used. It also taste like something thats been sitting in the refrigerator for too long. The cookies are good like others have mentioned, and the coffee is ok. I do enjoy there gelatto. Service is terrible. First of all, the fact that they have a tip jar by the cash register is shocking. Not just because it's not a usual type of establishment one would tip at, but because the women working weren't pleasant whatsoever. It seems like unless you're gossiping with the employees about your neighborhood you are a huge inconvenience. I ordered a cookie and a pastry and both were clearly not fresh. Let me start by saying that Russo Bakery only got one star because there isn't a zero star. This bakery sucks!! Their prices are high and the staff is awful! Not a friendly one in the whole lot. I agree with the reviewer that thinks they don't like non-Italians. I was never greeted upon entrance, have had money snatched from me, my purchase and change practically thrown on the counter and God forbid I ask for a bag. I have gotten cookies there which were costly and not that good. I frequented the bakery because my boyfriend loves Semolina bread. Sometimes those were like bricks and if I complained that was a problem. The last time I was there I vowed never to go int there again and haven't. If you want my money you need to act like it. I have found a better place near me in Valley Stream, NY. that has a much better product, friendly staff and offers more convenience because they are open 24 hours a day. read more

I love Russo's! When I lived in Middle Village, this was the only place I would go to get canoli's and pignoli cookies. All of their butter cookies are sooo good, and their rainbow cookies are great as well. Some pastry shops do some things well and others not so well. There are two locations, I've only been to the Glendale branch, but I've always been impressed at the quality and freshness. Everyone I have ever encountered in the bakery is in a permanent bad mood that will last for decades to come. If you can get a little friendly banter or just the slightest sense that your business is welcome and actually wanted they might get better ratings. Anytime my family and I are getting together to celebrate a holiday we run to Russo's. The prices are reasonable too. I just wish that the people that work there were nicer, they seem to hate their jobs or something because they are just not friendly people. They just never crack a smile and I'm the type to go out of my way to be super polite and friendly with people at work to try to make them have a good day at work. But when I do that here I end up feeling like I should be the one behind the counter since I'm the one saying thank you and have a nice day while they just look at me all grumpy. Russo Bakery has some great stuff. We've had the cookies, breads, mini pastries, cannoli, oreo cheesecake, rainbow & pignoli cookies over the years and have been very satisfied. However, their prices are thru the roof. The rainbows and pignolis are $19 and $21 a pound respectively. When you charge this much you need to expect to be held to a high standard and lately we've found their quality is really dropping off. The cookies don't taste fresh. They taste like they were sitting in the display case for several days. The rainbows taste dry - overcooked - and small dollop of jelly. In the past they melted in your mouth and there was a thick layer of jelly between the rainbow colors. The last time we had cannoli from here the shells were mushy....when they should have a nice crunch. We were especially disappointed by their Saint Joseph's pastries. Since the feast of Saint Joseph falls on March 19, we normally buy Irish Soda bread for Saint Paddy's (on March 17) and several Saint Josephs. It's a great combination of our family's Italian and Irish heritage. This year the pastries (essentially a cream puff pastry) were tasteless. The custard cream version was all right, but the cannoli cream version was awful. Usually they'll stay in the fridge for a night or two, but by Night 2 I wanted to throw them out. I also have to agree with others that have commented on the people working here. Mostly young girls with very lackadaisical attitudes. Regardless of whoever helps me, they move really slow and end up asking you the same question 2 or 3x, example: "Do you want powdered sugar on top?" (HINT: The answer is the same as the two previous times you asked me that question). Then they try to guilt you with a tip jar, "For the Girls", but after dropping $54 on dessert....I need to hang onto my spare change. read more
