Myself and my wife ate food from Runza on Saturday the 23rd of August. The cheeseburgers were really good and the fries were fresh. And again Tuesday the 26th of August ate from Runza the same cheeseburgers and fries. The fries were so hard not fresh, like the fries were cooked and then heated back up,not very tasty. The burgers were so greasy,hey I like a greasy real cheeseburger,but this grease was ridiculous,the bun was soggy. We used our fresh buns and the burgers were excellent. Runza... What can I even say. This morning at 5:00am I woke up in a cold sweat and had a bad case of the Runza's (it was terminal). After taking a cold shower I sauntered into the kitchen and began making breakfast, however, my omlette did not have the same emphatic joy as a delicious Runza. When I left for work to go to the Joann Fabrics I passed by the glistening green banner that advertised their Legendary Burgers and I immediately became a bit peckish. To make the story short after work I finally satiated my seemingly endless desire for a Runza and quenched my thirst with their Brisk Raspberry Tea (exclusive to Runza). I hurried home to work on my bird nests; when I arrived home, I quickly realized that this Runza run was nothing but a pyrrhic victory for I knew when I would rest my head that night I would repeat this glorious habitual response the next day. This place proves that not everything associated with KU is subpar. This Runza is clean, crisp and new. The food was served hot and quick. Definitely read what's in the famous Runza before ordering and set yourself up for success. Don't order a Runza and then complain that it has exactly what it says it has in it. If you're not adventurous enough for a Runza the burgers are great too. Most of Lawrence is a hard pass but Runza is here and I'm here for it. read more

Guilty pleasure. Sometimes I go here but I don't tell anyone. I just don't want the questions, the eye rolling, the guilt. The inevitable question is "What's a runza?" I am from Louisiana and we have no such beast there. I asked the same question when I first moved to Lawrence. A runza is like a hamburger pie. All sorts of yummy things are stuffed into the dough and then it's cooked. Really doesn't matter how it's made. It's enough to know it is delicious. If you are trying to eat healthy, this is not the place for you. Runza has got to be the most unhealthy food in town. No bragging at this restaurant that they are all vegan or gluten or trans fat free. No way, no how. But who cares?? Everything is so yummy! The fries are the best in town. Hot, crispy crinkle cut fries. The food is fabulous and greasy but that is, after all, why it's so tasty. There are many choices on the menu. There are hamburgers, salads, hotdogs and, yes, runzas. I've tried a little of everything over the years and it is all delicious. The staff is always friendly, parking is ample. The prices are reasonable for such yummy fare. After the rave reviews about this place, we knew we had to try it out. There are a good amount of options for what kind of runza you want to eat from plain to mushroom and cheese. We opted to get the original runza with cheese combos ($6.99) that's a good price for me ! We also got two kids meals the same as ours but obviously smaller. After we started eating these are just huge bier rocks. I wanted to LOVE this place because I love a good deal but my dough was undercooked and I just didn't like the American cheese. The staff was kind to my husband when he ordered and they helped him out with specials and deals they offer, while helping him navigate the menu. All in all, I will give this place another chance by changing my cheese option and adding bacon ! For your money this place Is for sure worth it and they are efficient in getting your order right. I stopped by this place for a very obvious reason. I had no idea what a "runza" was. I wasn't sure if it was just the name of the place or not, but curiosity brought me in. The place was clean..the staff were very friendly. The prices are a bit high, but all fast food places have gone up, so that's a given. I had a mushroom /Swiss runza combo. It was pretty tasty, except my bun or roll or dough pocket, whichever it is supposed to be. .could have been baked a little longer, for mine was slightly doughy. The krinkle fries were surprisingly good. My one complaint...their drink choices sucked unfortunately. The interior is renovated, thus making the restaurant look more updated. My first Runza experience was in 1988, while visiting friends in Omaha. LOVED them. Have been to the Lawrence store a couple of times since. Taste is an acquired one. Seasoned meat, kraut, onions and cheese nestled in bun-like shell. Afraid to say that my taste buds were not as stimulated this go 'round. The menu has dwindled to only two runza choice, and menu has fish sandwiches, chicken and a ton of burger choices....obviously bowing to the college crowd, who I'm sure prefer these choices. My Cheese runza was still good, but sadly has been changed enough to detect. Hardly any onions at all, kraut was very minimal and the meat looked like it had been on a steamer tray for most of the day. But Captain Mustard to the rescue!, enough mustard packets and some salt and we are chowing down anyway. I was all set for a bierock experience, but will have to revisit "You Say Tomato" for that taste sensation (a review for another day) Store was clean and neat, the staff was exceptionally friendly and polite, and the food was still good/okay, but not as good as I remember. Came here for the runza, got distracted by the signage: "Chili and Cinnamon Buns", "Best Chili in Town"... what? Well, now it's on. The place is a fast food joint. Set up just like any other fast food place with the order counter, combo meals and a drive through. As a matter of fact, they offered mainly burgers. For a place called "Runza" I found it odd they only had 2 Runza options. Chedder or swiss/mushroom. I got the swiss mushroom runza. It was pretty good. More of a philly cheese steak kinda situation. The filling was really finely chopped... the mushrooms were like Green Giant buttons (which, I happen to like) and the cheese was like a thick paste that allowed my napkin to stick to my face (which I happen to like). The combo meal was REALLY filling. Mainly because I substituted chili instead of fries. It's good for dipping. I'm going to call this combination a "German Dip". The chili was cafeteria style. Just bland and basic. Reminded me of Wendy's. I don't know what goes on in town chili wise, but I would venture to guess that it is probably not the best in town. I was too full for the cinnamon rolls (they looked to to be bite size... like cinnamon nuggets). You can get a side order of 4 or a full order of a dozen. The staff was pleasant and all smiles. Not bad if you are in the mood for fast food and wanting something different. It's actually quite tasty. Not recommended as an introduction to runzas. read more

Inevitably on every trip to visit my parents, as long as we're in Lawrence during the 11a-11p hours, we get Runza. As I know it, Runza's are of German heritage - known better as bier-rocks. They're basically a mixture of hamburger and cabbage (cheese, onions, mushrooms, etc are optional) wrapped in a crust of doughy goodness. I have a recipe to make Runzas, but they are never quite right. I did just manage to snag a Runza casserole recipe from a friend so I'm looking forward to trying it out and hoping it will satisfy my need for this delightful treat on long absences from the only one that is near my traveling path (most of the franchises are in Nebraska, with the lone one in Kansas in Lawrence and a few in Colorado). The fries are crinkle cut and go along with the "sandwiches" fabulously although the Runza alone is the star here. We've usually hit the drive through to pick up Runza for the family and in just 1 of many visits, something was left out. I can't remember if it was fries or an actual Runza, but we high-tailed it back to get the missing item and they were gracious and gave us the sandwich and a free dessert as well for our trouble. Even if you're not a big cabbage fan, a Runza is worth a try at least once and for the most part, cabbage is the only reason I've ever found for someone who didn't like a Runza (but their burgers are a great substitute). read more

Runza is so weird to me. Runzas are like if a White Castle slider got with a Hot Pocket and well, you know. If you don't like White Castle Sliders, this may not be for you. If you don't like Hot Pockets, well, I may not be for you. Frings (mix of fries and onion rings) are fun, except that last time I got mostly fries, and only a couple onion rings.
