The food is absolutely consistently delicious, and the service is efficient, fast, and friendly. While I don't typically eat in the store, it's fun to walk in to what seems like peanut heaven and out with more fries than you can eat. Yes you can grab a scoop of peanuts to eat while you wait for your very flavorful fries cooked in peanut oil. And thank goodness, there are extra fries in every bag that is less like spillage and more like abundant gifts of joyous yumminess. Not the healthiest place to eat, a bacon cheeseburger packs a whopping 920 calories, 560 of them from fat. No wonder they are so good! I love salted peanuts and they have barrels of free peanuts available for the munching while waiting in line or at your table while your food is being prepared. You also get to choose your burger toppings, including grilled onions and mushrooms at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. Their French fries are a bit pricey, but they are made in house from fresh potatoes and are fried in 100% pure peanut oil. 5 Guys is one of my few guilty pleasures. The atmosphere is very industrial and cold and when the place fills up it can be very loud and difficult to have a conversation, and the cooks shouting order numbers can get annoying. So why do I like it so much? Burgers (most any way you want 'em, including in a wrap or bowl,) and fresh cut and twice fried french fries! The free peanuts are a plus, too and hot dogs and milkshakes can be had, but the stars are the burgers and fries. I tend to like my burgers on the medium side, but The Guys only do well done although the patties are thick and juicy with a delicious beef flavor, so I won't knock them for that. Ketchup and malt vinegar are available for the fries and grab some peanuts while you're waiting for your order. I've had pretty good experiences with Five Guys restaurants previously, but for some reason the Lawrence location left me a little cold. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what would make this one any different than another, but there were certain qualities to the burger and fries that felt off. From the start though, Five Guys has a slightly overly complicated ordering method, which they will gladly explain to you. Given the wide array of toppings available, it's understandable that they'd want to codify somewhat, but it does seem a tad unnecessary or even demanding to learn a super secret code to get your food (though In-N-Out seems to make "secret" ordering options a selling point). The burgers themselves are rather large; I never go bigger than a "Little Hamburger", mainly because the structural integrity of the burger can't handle much else. With all the toppings and sauces, this is the only manageable size I've found (and my hands are comfortably sized to wrangle fulsome stacks of food). Eating here can get messy quick, but it can be part of the fun too. The flavor of the burgers themselves is quite good and fairly busy with flavors they are still well defined. At this particular location I found the sauces to be applied a bit heavily, which muddied the flavors a bit. When the amount of sauce is restrained a bit, the burger definitely tastes a notch or two above a basic fast-food hamburger. The ingredients are fresher and of higher quality and worth the extra dollar or two you might pay. I recommend the grilled onions for an especially warm, savory flavor. Five Guys fries are thick and fried in peanut oil, which is a relatively healthy oil for fries. The portions of fries are extremely generous, making a regular order ample for two people. The fries I had at this location were a tad over-salted, but were otherwise excellently done -- neither too crisp nor too soggy. Cajun-style fries are quite good, though I find the flavor wears on me partway through. Overall, Five Guys is a good place to go where you can get a couple higher quality burgers and fries for about 10 bucks -- an inexpensive night out that is leagues better than an embarrassing McDate. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is a go-to place when I want to get something to eat, but don't want to cook and don't want to hit lower-tier fast food. Mrs. R and I have eaten at Five Guys so many times that I did not realize that I had never written a review for it. In terms of frequency, we're not on a first-name basis with employees, but we still get Five Guys around once a month, and we have a standing order saved in the online order form. Five Guys provides just what it says -- burgers and fries. When you order, the kitchen starts making your burger the way you asked. The basic burger is two ground-beef patties, cooked on a flat-top grill. The menu offers a dozen toppings for personal customization. The burgers are deceptively small-looking but are really quite dense. I stepped back from getting the full-sized burger a while back and have moved to the "junior" size, which is a single patty. In a world of ubiquitous burger places and gourmet burger offerings, Five Guys hits it right on the head and makes a solid customized burger at a reasonable price. In addition to burgers, Five Guys does fries. Their fries are cut from whole potatoes in-store. In a touch of farm-to-table flair, a side-board will list the name of the farm that provided the potatoes that are currently being made into fries. The "regular" designation for fries is deceiving, as a "regular" is very large portion of fries, around 3-4 full potatoes cooked into fries. If you watch the kitchen make the fries, they first fill up a drink cup with fries and put it in the order-bag. Then they follow up by dumping another small tray of fries into the bag. One regular order of fries is sufficient for 2 people. Mrs. R and I typically order through the online form and pick-up the order from the store. This way, the burgers are ready to go when you arrive, and the fries are added to the order as the last step. It's efficient to get a pick-up order, and a good burger and fries. read more

I don't think 5 guys deserves all the hype, but it's a great spot to pick up the best burger in lawrence. i won't say it was the best burger ever, but it was good and the portions are overwhelming. little expensive for glorified street food, but you get a ton of food. if it was local people would like the place more. the kc area locations are also pretty atrocious and far away from population centers. 5 guys doesn't change the dining scene, but i'm definitely glad they've made their way to the midwest. much appreciated. read more

This place spoiled me for McDonald's and Burger King. I haven't been back since I had a Five Guy's burger. Not the healthiest meal on the planet, but if you want a burger and fries, this is the place to go. Their regular burger is two patties. Get the small if you only want one. And they only cook it to medium well. I like mine a little more on the medium rare side, but their meat is tasty and juicy. As others have said, you can get all the toppings you want, so you can truly have it your way. My standard is with grilled onions, jalapeno and bbq sauce - a damn tasty burger! All the toppings are fresh and delicious. I'm not much of a fry guy, but theirs are outstanding. They actually taste like potato, and they have malt vinegar in the store that make them so much tastier. I normally like shoestring fries done up dark golden brown and crispy, smothered in ketchup. Five guys aren't like that. They are potato planks cooked up to what I'd call medium and somewhat droopy. I like things spicy, so I get the Cajun style, which are probably too spicy for most folks. There were a few of these out in Philly, but I never bothered to go to one, so I figured I'd give the one here in Lawrence a shot. The burgers ... well, they're burgers. Five Guys seems to have a complex about their quality. You walk in, there are twenty signs proclaiming that they've been voted best burger in DC since, well, apparently the beginning of time. Go into the men's restroom, at least, and there are newspaper clippings to the same effect. Really, guys. Your burgers are pretty decent, but I'm not going to go proclaiming them as the best to the whole world (see the three star rating). They are, well, just good burgers. End of story. In good news, all toppings except for bacon and cheese are on the house (and the list of toppings is extensive ... I got sauteed mushrooms and onions on mine, which made me happy). The fries ... well, the fries are pretty awesome. I wish they were a bit crispier (they had a texture close to McDonald's, but without that oily goodness). The taste, though, was fantastic. I know this is a chain restaurant of sorts, but I'd never been there until this past Friday, and it's still fairly new to Lawrence, so here's a bit of a review for you! First of all, I really appreciated the fact that there are notices on the doors that this place serves peanuts out of the bag and right out in the open. The menu is simple and there's pretty much something there to satisfy anyone who might find themselves here, including a veggie "burger" (no meat involved). I just got a cheeseburger, which actually had two patties, not the one I was expecting, and I didn't order fries because...well, I never order fries (I did taste them though, and they were definitely some of the better ones I've had) The price was great for a good-sized meal. Almost everything you'd want to put on a burger was at no additional charge, which was nifty. It was basically the same stuff you'd find on a do-it-yourself burger bar, but they just do it for you. I dig. The food was yummy! I am picky about burgers, and this one definitely hit the spot. The location in Lawrence has two walls that are basically huge window banks, and the decor was minimal but inviting. It's also very convenient to shoppers in the south Iowa area (Target, Old Navy, Wal-Mart, etc), and near the movie theater. I found the staff to be friendly and welcoming, and they seemed happy to be there, which always makes for a better experience. I don't eat beef, and this chain does not offer a veggie burger or a fish sandwich; so I had been avoiding Five Guys. But I just tried it, since they have a veggie sandwich. It was better than I had anticipated. They have many veggies, including some that are grilled. I asked for all the veggies. It took about 10 minutes for them to make the sandwich. I love the Five Guys burgers and fresh cut fries. They remind me of the meals my mom would make us from the beef my dad raised. She would cook the burgers in a skillet and deep fry the fresh cut potatoes in lard. (Five Guys uses 100% peanut oil.) I wish there was a seasoning to their fries though. That would just make them even better. I've tried their Cajun ones but thought they were too spicy. If you want a good griddle made burger in Lawrence then this is the place. If you want a smoked burger you must try KC Smokehouse (who has seasoned fresh cut fries that make them the best fries in Lawrence). I can't give it the full 5 stars (because then it would be In-N-Out Burger, which hasn't expanded to Lawrence as far as I know), but it is probably the best "mainstream" burger in the city. A bit pricey? Sure, but you'll taste where that money went in every bite of your custom burger, loaded with any of the toppings you like. And you'll taste a little bit of added value if you order the fries, which defray the costs a bit by practically filling the bag, engulfing the inadequate paper cup collector in golden-brown goodness. Of course, if you eat them all, you'll probably have to pay a visit to the cardiologist, so it's really just a matter of who you want your money to end up with. If it were open later, or if it were a bit cheaper, or if it offered milkshakes (like catty-corner competitor Steak & Shake), it would render all other burger places outside Mass St. obsolete. Sadly, it's not a perfect world, but with ample parking, a great central location and just a downright great, basically incomparable (in Lawrence, at least) burger, you won't complain too much. read more

I expected to dislike this place, but I was surprised. The fries were really good, they tasted like actual potatoes, and the cajun seasoning was flavorful. The large fry was HUGE, enough for a family. I had the veggie sandwich, which is essentially a burger without the meat. Again, I had low expectations, but the mushrooms and green peppers were tasty, and the cheese was perfectly melted. I definitely agree with Chris P. that the five guys have some kind of (undeserved) complex about their quality; in reality you get an ok burger, with a nice selection of toppings, but honestly the fries kind of suck. And it's not a spectacular burger by any stretch, the flavor is ok but nothing to crave. I would say the average bar burger is better and probably costs about the same, and needless to say, a good bar burger is MUCH better. I would give this place 3 stars if it weren't for the fact that the fries really suck. (I tried them on more than one occasion just to make sure I didn't get some bad ones the first time.)
