You might know this as Planet Sub, if you aren't long in the tooth or have hung around Lawrence for eons, but the brand got its start serving hungry KU students. The enterprise since has expanded and the menu has made some additions, but Yello Sub is still making the best damn sandwiches one can find in this area. Yello Sub (and Planet Sub for that matter) makes their bread on site, fresh every day, and has forever. Gluten free? Uh, no, but I'm sure there is an option for you. I'm down with gluten, and Yello Sub's foundation wouldn't be the same without their bread. One of my favorites is the Green Turkey, a melange of turkey, bacon, cream cheese, and guac - it's a two-napkin adventure, minimum. This visit had me downing a Tuna Bacon Melt, which is tuna salad with bacon and Swiss and is absolutely delightful. I've been all over the menu, but the standards never let me down. Go half or go whole, but be adventuresome and try something you haven't had before, like the Super Hero, Tijuana Taxi, or Crab Cali. Or be vanilla and settle for a ham and cheese or turkey, but either way you will thank yourself. Pro tip for families: kids eat free with a regular purchase on Sundays. This is a stellar way to indoctrinate your progenies with a local dining institution and save your wallet a few dents. Also, you can use the app or call ahead to save a few minutes and the result is still the same. Expect to spend close to $10 for a half sandwich, chips, & a drink, and that's fairly competitive to chain sandwich shops. But the product difference isn't even close - Yello Sub is to chain shops what sleeping on 1000-count cotton sheets is to sleeping bags. It's that good. I was torn between yellow sub and another place but I ultimately decided on this. When I have a craving for a sandwich I NEED it done the right way. I will say that the staff here when we came in was very nice and they were helpful in the choices. I was confident that I was going to love everything about my sandwich only to be let down. I got the green turkey, it is like the creamy turkey but it has guacamole. I think that's where I went wrong, the guac was just bad and the cream cheese. Both were lacking in flavor and I couldn't get over the rubbery bacon. The best thing about the sandwich was the bread. The bread was baked very well and it had the right amount of toasty but softness in one. We also opted for the creamy turkey and my husband liked his sandwich and my kids got the pizza boat all were happy. I have been to Planet sub in the past and enjoyed it and I will give it one more try but I'll for sure be tweaking what I order so that I actually get something that I would want to order again, when I'm really in the mood for a sandwich. I was just passing thru on my way back to KC and wanted to just see KU. Naturally there should be excellent college town grub, and Yello Sub did not disappoint. It is huge on the inside and at 130pm I could have brought everyone I lnow and still have seats. Tijuana Taxi sub for me...the big one. There is not a lot I can say over and above what I said in the title. I love a good sandwich. I do not eat them often, but when I do I go to my "happy place", reminiscent of childhood, summers in SoCal, and being outdoors. Yello Sub did not take me to my happy place. There are few decent restaurants and fewer good sandwich shops in this city of nearly 100,000, a college town no less, and I had high expectations after reading Yello Sub's reviews. Four-plus (4+) stars out of 5 on Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Zomato? Really? What are you people thinking? I stopped eating at Subway years ago, not just because of their false advertising (I have never seen a real sandwich that looks anything like those in the photos, online or in commercials), but because they are not a good value. A "$5 Footlong" has maybe 4 ounces of meat at most (although those in their advertising likely have 8 to 16) and so do Yello Sub's although I could not find a single photo of a sandwich in their store or on their website. I grew up on "submarine" (Italian cold cut) sandwiches in Los Angeles where good delis are a dime a dozen. Those sandwiches were two-fisters. You had to wrap your hands around them, if you could, to keep all of the meat, cheese, and veggies on them from falling out. If you grew up in the Northeast or in Los Angeles, you know what I am talking about. YUM! I ordered the footlong Super Hero ($8.49+ tax) with salami, pepperoni, spicy capicola (spelled "capocollo", an Italian ham made from the meat of a hog's head [capo] and shoulder [collo]), provolone cheese, red onions, lettuce, banana peppers, oregano, vinegar, and oil. The first thing I noticed was how light the bag was. When I got home, I found out why. The sandwich was smaller than a Subway Footlong with about the same amount of meat and cheese, but with less veggies. Notedly absent was sliced tomato, an absolute requirement for an Italian "hoagie" or "submarine" (depending on where you grew up). The sandwich was underwhelming to say the least and at nearly twice the price of its "low-value" Subway counterpart, a massive disappointment and poor value. The Plant Sub we have in our local town is as close as it gets to Yellow Sub. Tasty, full of flavor, and everything you could want to make the perfect sub. They are better in quality then a Subway that is for sure but do cost a little bit more. So keep in mind if you are paying a little more than just imagine how tasty this place is just paying a couple more bucks! The staff who work are usually super friendly and helpful. There are so many sub options on the board you can easily enjoy them all. This is the original Planet Sub since 1979. I think their building and decor has been here since then. The booth tables are the kind with ads on them and it's amusing to see all the businesses that no longer exist. But the place is clean, the staff is incredibly friendly and the sandwiches aren't bad. I had the Yello Sub. It was tasty and on toasted bread. Usually I don't like toasted bread but this was good. I've learned that they fresh make their bread daily from scratch, it's never frozen. Every Planet Sub actually has a mixer. (I worked for Subway in college, the bread comes in frozen, is thawed proofed and baked. I've also worked for Target bakery, all that fresh baked bread and bagels were frozen, nothing is made in store from real ingredients. Because of this I am impressed by Planet Sub/Yello Sub.) This was my first visit to Yello Sub because I've been to Planet Subs. I came at the suggestion of another Yelper when I said Firehouse is the best sandwich in Lawrence. Do you people have any idea how hard it is to find a vegan sandwich in town that isn't just lettuce and tomato with guacamole? (Yes, Jimmy John's, that IS directed at you.) If you don't know, trust me when I say it's damn near impossible. If you DO know, you'll appreciate the fact that Yello Sub has a variety of options for vegetarians and vegans alike, and all of them are a lot more creative than a pile of sad vegetables between slices of bread. This is easily the most veg-friendly sandwich shop in the area. I normally went for either the Tofu Veggie sandwich or the BBQ Tempeh (minus cheese), both of which are delicious toasted and enough to be a meal in and of themselves. Any restaurant that serves tempeh as a meat analogue automatically gets big ups from me, because that's pretty rare here in the Midwest. I still have yet to try any of their meaty or cheesy sandwiches, simply because I enjoy the tofu and tempeh creations so much, but if the boyfriend's assessments are at all reliable, the Buffalo Chicken is apparently delicious. The restaurant itself is just a neat atmosphere, with Beatles-related memorabilia and decks of cards used instead of order numbers. The wait can be a bit of a pain, but calling ahead eliminates that problem. They have coloring sheets available, which I imagine are for kids but come in handy if you get a little bored waiting while it's busy. My dad and I collaborated on one the last time I treated him to a sandwich here, and it is proudly displayed on my refrigerator still. I wasn't expecting much. However, I became a huge fan of this place after I discovered that they put cream cheese on a lot of their sandwiches. Cream cheese on sandwiches reminds me of a fancy tea. I was reminded again this weekend why you fall just short of perfection when, once again, your staff person may as well have been a robot programmed to be rude to customers. Fresh baked bread= manna from heaven, so along with all the tasty sandwich fillings, Yellow Sub is hard to beat for a tasty sub. The cheesiness of most of the subs combined with the toasted crunch of the bread makes many of their menu items cravable. Don't go unless a sandwich sounds good, but they accept call ahead order so you can get a tasty sandwich to go or hang there. The ambiance is a bit lacking with hard booths, but the freshness of ingredients makes the experience worth it. I love that they use locally sourced tempeh in many of their sandwiches. Swear he used to run the location now long vacated where the Oread Hotel behemoth sits. Job security. Cool. Same decks of cards instead of taking a name, pretty much the same menu, and the sandwiches are still... well, they're OK, not great. But as a rule, who has great sub sandwiches in town? Still looking. The bar is really low in Lawrence for a good sub. The worst: Pickleman's Gourmet Sandwiches (shame to use the G word with the horrible, tasteless cr** they turn out. Subway: gross, sort of like Jared Fogle, their former pitchman. Sorry, couldn't resist. Where is he now? Oh, right. Sandbar: decent, not great. Jimmy John's: ... yawn... please. My Tempeh Ruben came with nicely melted cheese and well prepared tempeh, but it had Dijon mustard on it, not the Thousand Island that is standard on a Ruben. Hmph. Maybe they ran out? Changed their menu? The shop is pretty big and has lots of light, but has a slightly grimy feel to it.
