The food is fantastic, but not worth how much it is. The burgers are very expensive and they do not come with a side. If you would like a side - you have to order it separately. We have had great customer service and some not so great customer service. The ambiance is fun (with great music) however if you don't like tight spaces this might not be the place for you! If you love the sweet and salty combination, ong you will be dumping this sauce in everything. I ALWAYS get literally every sauce: garlic aioli, chipotle cocoa ketchup, jalapeño ranch, guajillo chili dip. Each sauce is delicious in its own way. On a burger that already has enough flavor by itself, or on 3 differently flavors of fries - the combinations are endless here. They can turn any burger into a vegetarian burger, a turkey burger or a salad. I wasn't a fan of the seasoning on the salad so even if you are on a cut or watching what you eat. I've been coming to the Burger Stand since they opened way back in the day and I was still a student at KU. I have to say that as far as consistency goes, they are one of those places that has so far managed to really maintain their commitment to quality and remain unchanged in the best ways possible for over a decade. The truffle fries are still amongst the best french fries really within driving distance of Kansas City, the dipping sauces alone would bring me back, but the fries are great solo as well. The burgers are insanely good. Every single one I've had has hit the spot. AND, they still have a great tap list, and casual ambiance that makes this place sing. Ever since covid they opened up a patio in the front which is where we sat on our most recent visit, and it was honestly great, especially for kids as it was a bit less loud, and if a kid dropped a fry on the ground there was a fat and happy squirrel nearby ready to pick it up. Overall, I'm so grateful this place is still as wonderful as it was when I was in my twenties, and I'm sure we'll be back. read more

I finally got a chance to compare this BS to the Topeka BS and let me tell you, both are absolutely fantastic! Food: I am so picky about burger buns, not too hard, not too squishy, they must be just right. This place does just that plus they are so warm and fresh. Service: I appreciate staff who take the time to see if you have everything you need even though you are responsible for getting your own sauces (omg the sauces are out of this world). Let me start by saying the burger was actually very good. I appreciated the flavor and uniqueness of my meal. I also thought the cashier was very friendly, and the overall vibe of the place is super cool! However, I likely would not return unless they resolve an issue: pricing. The menu prices seem reasonable for a sit-down restaurant, but it's not really a sit-down place because you're not getting a waiter (you get your food yourself). So, the menu prices are a bit high. On top of that, you get hit with an automatic 15% "hospitality fee", which is not a tip. Then, after you pay, you get prompted to leave an additional tip! What! Makes no sense and I'm feeling a bit swindled. To the management/staff: I understand you want a "semi" tip for cleaning and caring for the tables in the restaurant before/after people leave. Great! Then incorporate that 15% directly in the prices for all to see. Or, have people sit down and be served by a waiter with a regular tipping system. Trying to do one half takeout and one half sit down with full sit down pricing is disingenuous to the paying customer! I don't plan to return or recommend until it gets fixed. Without the pricing shenanigans, this is easily at least a 4-star review. I'd love to come back with a fixed system and update my rating! read more

We went today for a Bingo event and had such a great time with our hosts Marie Queerie and Karma. I had a drink called "Listen Linda" which was a very refreshing tequila drink. After Bingo and a couple of drinks we had dinner...a couple of sammys and fries. I got aburger called Muenster Smash with fresh jalapeños and cheese and fixins. Forgot the pics. I always try to stop in at the burger stand when I'm in LFK. First, they have an awesome tap list. They have so many great craft beers on tap. They usually have some pretty hard to find ones so definitely check that out to start. They also do monthly specials with a variety of items and the creativity is outstanding. If one of the specials looks interesting, I usually try it. A few years ago, I tried the Elvis burger complete with bacon, peanut butter, and banana pudding. Sounds super weird but was so good! This time I tried the September specials The Pear Nut-cessities. It consisted of a Salt Creek beef patty topped with grilled pickled pears, a walnut miso sauce, greens, and whole walnuts. It was good. Not as good as the Elvis but still good. My standard menu favorites include: The Black and Blue Burger with Blue cheese, granny smith apple chutney & assorted greens. The chutney is *chefs kiss*. The Barnyard Bash-Fried chicken breast with sliced avocado, applewood smoke bacon, swiss cheese, spicy honey mustard bbq sauce & assorted greens. This is one of my all time favorite chicken sandwiches. And last but not least the Smoke Burger with Applewood smoked bacon, gouda cheese & chipotle-cocoa ketchup. So savory and rich. The sweet potato fries are also a favorite. A side is huge but they have a larger size that could accommodate two people easily. They offer a variety of sauces. I like the aioli. A fun one is the marshmallow. It's good with the sweet potato fries but it is a little sweet for my palate. The offer shakes, kids meals, hot dogs, salads, veggie burgers and even gluten free buns so I feel confident in saying that there is something for everyone. Something that I think is cool (but I'm sure a bit controversial depending on who you ask) is the hospitality fee. 15% is automatically charged to each ticket and is goes towards providing a higher livable base wage and to expand benefits like health insurance, sick pay, and parental leave. It is NOT gratuity! I'm assuming they went this route instead of raising the menu prices to offset the cost and I'm here for it. read more

I was in Lawrence doing some shopping and decided to stop by this location. It had been a while since I had eaten a burger, so it was the perfect time for me to indulge in one. I ordered the Kobe burger with a basket of Cajun fries. When the food came out it looked amazing. The burger was flavorful, juicy, and slightly sweet. The tomato-aioli paired well with all the other ingredients in the burger. However, when I began eating the cajun fries, I noticed over time I wasn't able to taste the potato anymore because of the seasoning. The fries looked over seasoned and it started to burn my mouth. There was enough seasoning at the bottom of the basket to season a new set of fries. Unfortunately, because of how spicy the fries were, I was unable to finish the basket of fries. Overall, I was left slightly dissatisfied with the food. If I were to return to this location in the future, I would try different fries next time. I'm unsure if that's how the cajun fries are normally, but I recommend anyone not used to very spicy foods to be cautious ordering them. read more

The brightly colored chalkboard menu, the friendly staff... all felt fun and welcoming. Our food hit the spot. Daughter ordered the Smoke burger, I chose the Barnyard Bash choosing grilled chicken rather than fried. We also shared a basket of truffle fries. Both were good. I loved the combo of grilled chicken, avocado and honey mustard bbq. Delicious! The truffle fries were good, but fries are one of those things I enjoy during and not after. The Burger Stand offers several dipping sauces to go with the fries... your sure to find a few favorites. Had we been hungrier I would've tried a shake, too! The Burger Stand sits at the top of burger spots for me after 7 months of living in Kansas. First off, the location is awesome being right in the heart of Mass street. I enjoy walking around that area and grabbing a great burger and fries is like the chef kiss to a day in Lawrence. They recently opened the inside seating and I can't wait to enjoy the atmosphere once again. As far as actual meal, I have had both the blue cheese burger and smoke burger with truffle fries. The burger is always cooked to your exact preference. The meat is lightly packed to bring out a softer texture from a typical burger. I feel like this brings out more juicy flavors with each bite. I mean meat, cheese, and bun would just be enough for me to give burger stand a 4 out of 5 but the fries just take it to the next level The fries are always perfectly cooked with tons of crunch and tons of truffle taste and smells. The uniqueness of the jalapeño ranch sauce and bbq really push the side to a 5 out of 5. My only critique is the toppings on some of these burger sound good (apple chutnew, and the Gouda cheese ) but I prefer simpler ingredients so I suggest substitution or just getting it on the side. As I noted, the burger is a 4 out of 5, which is still great! But, when you consider the fries, the environment they create, and the rarity of getting a good burger in Lawrence or neighboring cities, THE burger stand deserve a 5 out of 5 overall. read more

Super busy at lunch time. The spot was recommended by a Kansas native. The garlic aioli was so tasty. I got the classic burger. My friend got the burger with the spicy jam. The truffle Parmesan fries were absolutely delicious. It looks small at first glance, but they have outside, upstairs, and bar seating. I wouldn't recommend going with too large of a group at those busy time or May take awhile To get food and find somewhere to sit. read more

I wanted to write a Covid specific, fall of 2020 update to my review because things are so different right now. For starters, please keep on supporting the businesses on Mass St. if you're able to. On a recent visit, I was saddened to see so many shuttered, whether temporarily or permanently. During Covid and warmer weather: You ordered from a little walk-up window, wearing a mask. They have converted the sidewalk and parking spaces into protected patio seating. It's limited, but it works well if you're able to find a table. We had a million bees hovering around while we ate, but I liked the overall setup well enough. Food wise: I've had tons of burgers here that are great, and recently tried their plant based buffalo cauliflower. It was pretty good, but drenched in bleu cheese which overpowered the rest of it. Like a lot of veggie burgers, it started off good then got kinda mushy and fell apart towards the end. I'd try something else next time. Wife got the chickpea burger and it was kind of the same story, just less flavor overall. If you take one thing away from this: TRUFFLE PARMESAN FRIES! Get them with the spicy aioli, or their cocoa ketchup and kick back and enjoy the next five minutes of deep-fried bliss. If you are in the mood for sweet potato fries with a cinnamon taste this is your place. the spice overpowered this dish! the berry bison burger was tasty on its own (ask for the rhubarb on the side) unless you are a fan of a fruity tart burger. the shake is not recommended for a hot day to drink outdoors unfortunately it wasn't thick enough. This place is conflicting for me as far as a review. We have never been here and walked in to no one saying hi or greeting us. We stood there for awhile and thought well let's grab that one seat left at the bar. There was a long line but it appeared it was for to go orders. I don't know, anyway we received a hello at the bar and then after our first drink order we basically didn't exist. We had to ask to order more, we had to ask for water, no one even asked if we needed anything or apologized for the incredibly long wait for our food, heck we had to ask for the bill. I'm not kidding you it's like we did not exist! Basically what I am getting to is with an added 15% I guess they do not care. Regardless of service they still get a tip. I have experienced this same behavior in Miami where they do the same added gratuity. The service alone is what brought the stars down for me. Now on to what you came for, The food which Deserves a 4 star review. Although it took an awfully long time to receive. The bacon burger was delicious and ordered at medium was perfectly done. They have a fun and unique menu of fries. The bacon and cheddar basket of fries was a good size with a nice heaping of toppings. The spicy mushroom "burger" was super tasty (had a good but mellow kick) it was certainly a different choice but enjoyable. We decided we had to try these alcohol milkshakes, and they did not disappoint! I got the rum and Carmel sauce one... let's just say you have to try it! I would have taken a picture but I was just too excited! My friend ordered the peppermint shake (not my favorite flavor) but she loved it. If you come for sure save room for one of these.
