Total comfort food. The hamburgers are juicy and delicious, and the drinks are just as strong. The Old Fashioned is my go-to every time. I've tried a few other cocktails, but I always come back to this one--it never disappoints. The staff is always so friendly and helpful--great service every visit. Yes, parking can be a little tight, but that's part of the charm and uniqueness of Big Mill and its history. We've had a couple of visits where the crust tasted slightly like old butter, but it's only happened a few times and definitely hasn't stopped us from going back. I always love coming to The Big Mill to get their Detroit style pizza. I usually get the margherita pizza which has pesto on it which is delicious. The service is usually not very great, though, with long waits on drinks from the bar, slow on refills, but the servers are all nice. The seating is mostly benches, which can be uncomfortable, but I don't mind them! My boyfriend loves coming here when we come to Lawrence for a show or game! read more

Meh. I've been here several times and have been under impressed each time. The seating in this small restaurant is bench style which is not always comfortable for all. The food is good but it's not GREAT. I think the prices are a bit high for what you get. To me, this is a restaurant that is trying to be fancy but can't pull it off. Parking is a crap shoot, at best. The parking lot is super small. The restaurant is easy to access for those with mobility concerns. There will be those who disagree with me but there isn't anything outstanding about this establishment. Every time I have been here, the service has been lacking. Everyone is friendly enough but they have problems getting my take out orders correct. I usually get a burger to go. Oh, yeah... fries are extra. If I'm paying $14 for a cheeseburger, you would think fries would be included. Not here. Bottom line... it's not bad but there are other, better restaurants in town. read more

Took my Son and Daughter her for a Sunday lunch, and it was great. The pizza is so airy and fluffy. Looking at it you would think it's thick and doughy, but it's not. I had $5 Bloody Mary and mimosa, which was good. I like how they put a large bottle of water your table, so you can fill impure waters up yourself. Good atmosphere, and service was good. Nothing but positive things to say about this place. Five of us went on a Tuesday night. They sat us outside, as requested. Turned on the heaters for us, as requested. The waiter came by frequently to check on us. He was patient, informed, helpful, friendly, polite, and professional. We ordered the chorizo nachos as an appetizer. Super yummy. Big enough for the 5 of us to share. I ordered the wings for r dinner as that was the special of the night and they were 1/2 of ($7). My brother and sister split the "Night Moves" pizza. My other sister got the kale and beets salad. My other sister got the fish and chips. I loved the wings. But I could only eat 4 after gorging myself on nachos. I took home the other 6 wings. My brother and sister had 2 slices of pizza leftover. My sister loved the salad and finished all of it. My other sister loved the fish and chips and we all tried them. The sauce is kind of sweet, but also has a lemony taste. She had leftovers and took it home. We really enjoyed ourselves. Pizza was different! But absolutely delicious no sauce but the way the honey with cheese hits was perfect. Onion rings thick but batter not too crunchy went perfectly with classic ketchup. Service was good on KU football game day. On this particular visit we chose items from the menu other than pizza which we typically enjoy. Classic burger was subpar and don't recommend the fish and chips. Had fish and chips some years ago here and it was good. Today's experience I was disappointed! Firstly, kudos to our nice waiter. Very professional and friendly. I highly recommend the Mill Burger. This was really good and needed to additions. I suggest skipping fries and trying their Dill Slaw ----- omg. YUM. I could easily eat a bowl of this. My friend got the blackened chicken sandwich which she really enjoyed. She had an IPA that tasted like a summer Shandy which was lovely and I had the Black Widow cider. Hands down a really good meal. Now comes my disappointment and suggestions; so this note is for a manager or whoever does the menu. Your dessert menu is lack-luster. Like, really sad. For starters, the Pot de Creme was nice, love the orange zest on top. But $9 for the size you get, you have to be kidding me. At the very least, have it be the size of a coffee mug. Serving me a child size dollop of pudding that comes in a baby food jar isn't cool. We also tried the Ricotta Doughnuts... this is a hard pass. Yet again, $9 for something that isn't satisfying. You serve 6 balls with no powdered sugar and a 2 tablespoon size sauce that does nothing for this "dessert". My suggestion is ditch that old lady jam and add hot fudge instead. A side of vanilla ice cream would make it worth it. You can even remove 3 of the balls to make it decent. The doughnuts are dry, like zero moisture. It desperately needed some type of filling. So, after having an AMAZING meal, we ended the evening with these MEH desserts. Bummer. I give the place an overall 3.6 grading. Sadly, Yelp doesn't do half stars. It's not worthy of a 4 star rate but it is above the 3 mark. Would I return? Totally. But I'm skipping dessert. read more

I did laundry in this place in the 1990's. Very cool renovation. Good vibe. We were there for a late lunch, 1pm-ish. Sunday has a $5 Bloody Mary that was great. Wife & I split the Honeymoon pizza & the boy got the French Dip with coleslaw. Boy liked the sandwich a lot but the coleslaw had absolutely no seasoning. Our pizza was good but missed on sauce and was very loaded with cheese. If that's your thing have at it. Our server was nice and attentive. It's different pizza, but in a very good way. Detroit-style crust. The pizza toppings aren't the same typical offerings you find everyelse, think roasted mushrooms, Roma tomato, artichokes. The service a lot less than desirable. Claire P. Was our waitress. First interaction was good brought water. Took her almost 15-20 minutes to come back after us having to ask who our waitress was. Took drink and food order. 15 minutes later, as I have watched Claire P. converse with co-workers openly in front of my party of 6 twice now, as my parties food sits in the window, she continues her conversation. Not until a fellow co-worker tells her our food is ready. Also, word for the wise. Might want tell parties of six or more that' gratuity is included. Claire made 30.00 on our party of 6 and gave absolutely terrible service.! read more

The food here is very delightful. The flavors are just right. The specific dish I got is the honeymoon pizza who is the perfect mix of honey savory and sweet. Oh wow! I do love a good pizza, but I can't say that I've ever had Detroit-style pizza, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This was my first visit to Big Mill and I was amazed! We got the Hot Hawaiian and it was soooo delicious! Our service was very good and our server accommodated our quick in and out so we could get to our concert in time. I am a little torn on this place. The good: ambiance, nachos. The bad: parking lot, pizza. The servers were attentive I guess. But, also looked as is they didn't care about anything. The food was decent but I was absolutely starving so would have probably eaten anything. The pizza has a weird crust and I also think they must use some esoteric oil to grease their pans because my stomach hurt afterwards. The parking lot is a nightmare with tiny parking spaces. The Jack Sun is THE BEST gin cocktail I've EVER had anywhere! I haven't tried the pizza yet but if it's as good as this cocktail I cannot wait! Ok....the wait is over. I've just come in from California where it is easy to find incredible pizza...AND I was in Italy for the first time this year, and the pizza there...I mean c'mon! I absolutely love pizza. What a great first experience. I met a friend for lunch (drove in from KC) and it was definitely worth the drive. The vibe in the bar/restaurant is laid back, welcoming, unique, and I love that it's off the beaten path i.e. not on Mass. This is now one of my favorite places for pizza in town! Drinks were also great here--I loved my spicy margarita. We tried a couple pizzas (and had lots of leftovers) and I was pleasantly surprised by the fresh ingredients and the amazing crust. I believe they make their own ricotta and it was wonderful. I recommend getting a side of marinara to dip your pizza in, especially if it's one that comes without red sauce! I will say that the side salads are a bit overpriced for what you get, but the fries are great and come in a generous portion. The interior of the restaurant is clean, warm, and stylish.
