We stopped by Dempsey's for a Sunday night dinner when we were passing through Lawrence, KS. Dempsey's has a casual, lively vibe and wasn't overly crowded so we were seated right away. Our service was quick and friendly. Unfortunately, we were not as impressed by the food. We both ordered the Thai PBB burger, which is described on the menu as "House made thai peanut butter sauce, bacon, pineapple chutney, sriracha aioli." However, this burger came covered in cranberries, which added an odd Thanksgiving juxtaposition to the Thai theme. Our fries were very good, and we received a huge bowl of them with various sauces. Maybe we just got unlucky with our burgers and I would be open to giving this restaurant another try. read more

Arrived for dinner around 6:45 on Thursday and it was not too crowded-- it's away from the busier Mass St. Today's daily special was $1 House fries (side size). We ordered it with entrees but fries came out as appetizer -- I guess because for Happy hour it's an app! Burger & salad came after we had gotten through almost half the fries. Portion size was good for the small salad, though I needed more dressing. Burger was thick and saucy. Server was attentive and honest that she's not sure when we tried to ask advice on directions (we're from out of state). My son will likely be going back after he moves here to attend KU. read more

Food here is hit or miss. The salads all have weird toppings/ingredients. The menu tries too hard to be "creative" when really this is the type of establishment you expect to just serve run of the mill bar/pub/American food. The truffle fries are very good and the truffle cream is the best sauce to accompany them. The chicken tenders are extremely over breaded and overcooked, they were hardly edible. The servers here look to all be young college kids who are very friendly and make the atmosphere warm and inviting. However, much of the seating is cold hard metal stools or chairs (very uncomfortable!) We were disappointed that the KC chiefs game was not on the speaker system even though it was on the tv screens. If you are looking for a good burger to satisfy your burger cravings then this place is perfect! Their fries were delicious and the service we had here was pretty good! Food was awesome! The only thing that threw me off a bit was the fact that when we were eating a line began to form on the back porch to go downstairs. My boyfriend and I have never been to this location so we were completely unaware of the fact that there was usually a line there to get into the bar. So about halfway through our meal it was a bit awkward to eat there because the security people were having full conversations about five inches from our table. When Dempsey's first open idk like 10 years ago it was fire. I mean it was one of those burgers who could hold its own on some Food Network show. The Dempsey burger and parm fries omg. But HOLY SHIT. Idk if new management took over. Funniest part. At 1:30pm sold out of half the menu. Service horrendous. The food. Bad. Burgers bad. The fries bad. Lesson learned... if you go to a burger pub, don't get the wings. Sorry about this review but the overcooked dry wings brought the rating down, served on a tray with 5 pieces of carrots an one 4" piece of celery. We could barely get through the second wing. The Thai PBB burger...what a sensational burst of peanut butter, sweet pineapple chutney, bacon and give me the heat... a sriracha aioli. Nailed it on this one DEMPSEY! Ended up here by pure luck before a Jayhawks game, ended up being a very good experience! It gets packed on Game-days so show up early! Service was great, food is very good for the lower price point. Great portions, service and overall cleanliness. We tried both specials (Tomato Bisque & Grilled Bacon and Cheese / Sriracha Jalapeño burger) and ate every bite! I placed an order for pickup and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. I showed up 15 minutes later, only to find that half of my order wasn't even prepared yet. I was left waiting at the bar, where I couldn't help but notice two kitchen staff members casually chatting and scrolling on their phones behind the bar. One of the staff even made a snide comment to his friend, saying, "Does he think staring is going to make his order go quicker?" While the bartender was friendly and tried to make up for the delay, the kitchen staff really need to check their attitudes. Maybe if they spent less time on their phones and drinking, and more time actually doing their jobs, orders would be prepared on time, food would be better (based on other reviews I've seen), and customers wouldn't be left frustrated. It's disappointing to see such a lack of professionalism by the kitchen staff in a place that could have great potential. read more

As a guy that misses the feeling of a winning football team (Huskers), it was incredible to indulge in this absolute W of an Irish Pub. It was ideal to take in the KU game, with a perfect blend of college crowd to provide energy but also a mature audience that didn't make me feel out of place. Started with garlic fries and cheese curds, both top tier. Mixed in a Yakamanic IPA (or 4) and an Irish car bomb to engross myself in the pub experience, and they certainly didn't disappoint. For the main course, I had the Swiss mushroom burger and had it down in about 90 seconds. You know it's a good burger when you have to wash your hands a few times before writing your Yelp review. Overall, this Irish pub gets a 5/5 stars. Side note, I'm getting a puppy soon and highly considering naming him "Dempsey". read more

The food was average at best. Mostly disappointed that I was looking at the online menu. It turns out the prices are considerably more than what is listed on the website. We pointed this out to our server and nothing was done to make it right. Fish & chips were listed as $12 online, but actually cost $16. You only get 2 fish fillets and fries. Honestly, the $12 price was more than what the dish was worth. The chicken wings were gamey and the burger was mediocre. I definitely won't be back! read more

What a great place! I don't know who Dempsey is but the rest of their name is on point. This is a legitimate burger joint and a pub with a very large selection of beer. I first discovered Dempsey's in Lawrence Kansas and I was immediately hooked on their non-typical burger options. The menu here isn't very big but it's stacked with flavor. Their truffle fries just may be the key to world peace and homemade catchup? who does that? I've tried several menu options in Lawrence and Wichita and I have not been let down. We ordered 4 of same drinks, an app, and 5 entrees. 3 drinks arrived 20 min later after watching them sit at the bar for 10 min. fourth drink arrive another 20 min later. food arrived intermittently over next 20 min in various states of poor quality and not correct modifications. The truffle fries are a must! The garlic aïoli sauce is the absolute perfect pairing with them. God they are just too good!! They've got a nice selection of items. The atmosphere is great the staff super cool. They decorated the whole ceiling with chrome decor. Lots of people but spaced out great. I really like the food. We started with an appetizer the Bavarian pretzel sticks which are magnificent! I ordered the original and truffle fries, and others ordered the Smoked stacked burger with sweet potato fries. The burgers are individual, so fries offers are separate. Definitely a share size on the fries. The food is so del everything great flavor cooked perfectly. We will definitely be back when we visit Lawrence. The Track team recommended this to us. Very popular spot and the sound isn't horrible. So much space in the booths you could pack 4 in comfortably. New owners, an updating of the interior and exterior warrants I review Dempsey's again. Hands down, my favorite burger, fries and a beer combo in the city. Nah, that other place that opened as a rip-off to this, don't even come close in my opinion. First, props to the new owners for not messing with what was a very successful menu. The burgers appear and taste the same--fantastic--still the same wonderful choices of fries (sweet potato, duck fat, fire, truffle, etc.), burger salads (a favorite) and other sides. Service remains above average in a city overrun with college students that simply aren't food professionals and routinely fail when the heat is on and the crowd shows. How they're doing this, no idea, because few others seem to unless they're employing adults who are in it for the long haul. Fresh treatment to the interior that's a win-win. A bit cleaner to the eye but still retains the feeling of a UK soccer bar. The situation with tables and booths easily improved, better looking, and overall the inside is must much more appealing. Even the choices of beers seem improved, good choices from Free State and favorites from KC like Boulevard and BIer Company. Two thumbs up. For my money this is my favorite hang for a burger, maybe a basketball game or just visiting enjoying some time in the evening with family and friends.
