I was craving brunch this morning and realized it was national waffle day. In celebration Slim Chicken had $5.00 chicken & waffles that included a drink! The chicken here is unmatched by any other fast food chicken place. Yep I'm throwing Raising Canes, Popeyes, and even Churches Chicken under the bus! Lol every time I get slim chickens, the chicken is always piping hot and very well seasoned regardless if it's bone in or out. The waffle is always made to perfection as well. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The service is fast and friendly, and the restaurant is vibrant with red and calmed down with a western wood look? This is a great place to grab quality food on the go. Although the closed the one on Iowa, I am glad this one has remained. read more

I am writing to share the worst experience I have ever had at this restaurant. After working a long shift, I drove almost an hour specifically so my mom could try the new Dr Pepper chicken nuggets. To make matters worse, the nuggets didn't taste like Dr Pepper at all, leaving us almost certain that we were actually given a regular order instead.When my family placed our order, the restaurant was not busy at all. The employee who took our order,seemed nice at first. However, 10 to 15 minutes after we ordered, several other customers arrived, including a group of four. Almost everyone who arrived well after us received their food first--including two other to-go orders and the group of four who were dining in.We waited over 30 minutes for our food, only to realize it had been sitting on the counter ready to be bagged the entire time. When I brought this to his attention, he replied, "Sorry about that. It was faster for me to get the orders out that were on plates." He then opened our order boxes, looked at them, closed them, and made us wait even longer.When we finally got our food, we sat down to eat some of it and realized it was completely cold--without even the slightest hint of warmth, proving it had been sitting out for a long period. Fearful that complaining would mean waiting another 30 minutes for a remake, we didn't say anything, put the food back in the bag, and drove an hour home.No customer should be treated this way, and cold, incorrect food should never be served. First time here and last time. First off when I ordered the six piece chicken wings. I asked to have a second dipping sauce of another flavor to try, I was told I could only have one with the meal. Needless to say that was a little bit cheap and disappointing. Then to make matters worse, the chicken wings were way overcooked. Very dry. It gets worse from there. When I tasted the fries, they tasted really bad. I finally realized the grease was probably rancid. Decided to eat here for lunch based off of my co-workers recommendation. I've heard about this place but never thought to eat here, due to Canes being my go to for chicken tenders. I must say I was impressed! They have bone in wings, as well as a tender and bone in wing combo. That won me over right away, the bone in chicken was very bland some seasoning on them wouldn't have hurt. Their strawberry cheese cake is to die for! It's made with fresh strawberries, and served in a jar! I highly recommend trying that dessert. The sauce options are really good as well. I gave 3 stars due to the fries being cold and soggy, I asked for fresh fries and the person taking my order lied in my face and said they were just made a few minutes ago. I'm usually a person who believes in second chances and I have given this place a second chance and not only did they let me down but they was worse than before. I decided to come in today for some chicken but I wanted something different I didn't want the same thing that I had before so I ordered a grilled chicken wrap and I specifically asked for no fries but fried mushrooms they got the wrap right but they gave me fries anyway. I could excuse the transgression if they were packed, or it was extremely busy but it was neither the case. I was in the drive-through there was only one other car behind me and there was no patrons dining in, so how can you make this kind of mistake? I hate to say it because I've said it in other reviews of fast food restaurants where I've received subpar service. It seems to me that every since the rate of pay went up the quality of service has went way down. There doesn't seem to be a sense of accountability or the need to make things right for customers. And why should it be if you get $15 an hour no matter how bad you do, I guess at the end of the day a paycheck is a paycheck right? read more

Buffalo Mac bowl used to be so good but now this place just messes everything up. I got the buffalo Mac bowl and it was overloaded with scallions so you can't even taste the chicken or Mac. I'm pretty sure there wasn't even buffalo sauce on there because there is 0 spice or buffalo flavor. Food Poisoning from 4/20/24. My boyfriend and I ate the same things all yesterday except when he got Slim Chickens for dinner, and I chose to eat at home around 8:30pm. His head was in the toilet from 2am onwards so sick. He's okay today, so definitely appears to be food poisoning from the one variable meal he ate yesterday here. I was excited that Slims opened up in Lawrence. I ordered the Hungry Plate. It came with chicken tenders, two toasts, friends which you can substitute for any side, and a drink. I chose to substitute my fries for the potato salad. Not as good as I was hoping. The chicken tenders were also not as crunchy or crispy as I was hoping. You're also limited to sauces, according to your order. I was hoping it would be a more home style cooking. There was a big crowd there, and a longer line in the drive-thru. Mr. R and I went to Slim Chickens for dinner on Saturday night. There was not much of a line to order, and we were able to find a seat easily. The staff was very friendly. I got the Slim's platter (5 fried chicken fingers, texas toast, fries, and a drink) and Mr. R got the chicken and waffles. The Slim's platter was okay; the Texas toast with limp, the fries were not super crispy, and the chicken fingers breading was a little soggy. The fingers were tender and moist, but I have to admit I was a little underwhelmed. I had been anticipating perfect fingers, since that is one of their specialties. I like the Slim sauce; it was well-spiced. The chicken and waffles came swimming and syrup and butter, but Mr. R said it was good. I will give them another try - they have several delicious sounding wraps on the menu and you can get the chicken grilled. (I'm normally stingy with my 5 stars, but since this place is new I wanted to give them a good start.) I went to Slim Chickens in Louisiana last summer and was so excited to see that the franchise had made it to Lawrence. We didn't have time to go in, so joined the long line in the drive thru, where there was a very nice man handing out menus I thought that was smart, given that the line was so deep, and the place was new enough that most people would need time looking at the menu before deciding. The line moved pretty fast! (Also impressive since the restaurant hadn't even been open a week and one can expect the staff to have a bit of a learning curve to overcome.) My son and I both got the Slims plate (had enough left over for another meal). The chicken was fresh, had a great crunch and tasted delish! The mango habanero sauce is the bomb - the slim sauce is good too (just not enough flavor bang for my palette). The seasoning on the fries was spot on (NOT a "boring fry") and the French toast - yum! We also had an order of fried mushrooms, which probably would've been best eaten right away, as the steam inside the box caused the coating to get a little soggy by the time we got home to eat. (I definitely don't blame the restaurant for that). Slim chickens continues the proliferation of fast chicken restaurants in Lawrence. It has its hits and misses. Mrs. R and I headed to Slim Chickens to check it out. Among the wave of chicken places that are cropping up in Lawrence, Slim Chickens is reportedly the most ambitious, with this location already opened, and a second location already planned and underway on Iowa Street. Slim Chickens follows the Raising Cane's model of business (or, to not compare it to another chicken joint, the In & Out model) : do one thing (or a few things) and little else. Slim Chickens has a somewhat larger spread than the former two businesses, as it does its main set-up of chicken tenders, but also adds a chicken sandwich, chicken & waffles, wings, salads, wraps, and some desserts into the mix. The set up is fairly orderly and the actual space is very brightly lit. From the front door, customers are funneled to the counter and registers to order. On our visit, Mrs. R ordered the Slim's platter (5 tenders, two dipping sauces, fries, and toast), and I ordered the chicken & waffles (3 tenders, waffle). The chicken was o.k. While it seemed that the breading that they use on their fried chicken is a little thin, and while the tenders are probably 1 oz to 1.5 oz apiece, a lack of much breading makes them looks small on the plate. The chicken and waffles also comes already covered in butter and syrup. While I thought it was good overall (a decent quality waffle, and pretty tasty chicken) I would rather not start out with a my plate swimming in syrup, especially because there was bottle of syrup available for me to doctor it up myself. It's also probably asking too much to have real maple syrup, but I really feel like the whole affair would be better with better syrup, and starting out with a surfeit of syrup already had an impact on the dish. Mrs. R also felt that her chicken platter was o.k. The fries came out a bit soggy, and the Texas toast was reportedly o.k., but not spectacular. Slim Chickens also suffers from the problem of being second, as Raising Canes has been open for almost a year, and it is inevitably going to draw comparisons. Unfortunately for Slim Chickens, the knowledge of what the chicken is like at Raising Canes also colored our perceptions of what we were looking for in chicken tenders and fries. When the second location opens up across the street from Raising Canes, it's going to be interesting to see which shop does the best business. read more

Food was prepared quickly. The array of sauces you can choose from is large. I'm not a fan of watery thin sauces, and the honey bbq was. However the honey mustard had a good consistency. Hubby and I placed an online order on a Sunday evening for the first time. We tried their wings and the tender plate. When we went to pick up, the guy there forgot to give the drink. So we just went ahead with no drink. As for the food, the grilled tender was good but the size is much smaller compared to many other places. Fries and the toasts are just fine. The wings are also small and just mediocre in taste. You can easily get bigger and more tasty ones in Lawrence. It was 7:30 and no one was eating in the restaurant. Someone told me that this place was good. It's not. Disclosure: I went at about 2 pm, after the food would have been fresh (if it ever was) for the lunch crowd. I ordered the three wings and three tenders with fries. The wings were tossed in buffalo sauce and I ordered blue cheese dip for the wings, and Ranch dip for the tenders. Wings were just OK, buffalo sauce on the super mild side but OK, tenders not anywhere near crisp (the limp coating sliding off) and the Ranch dip tasted like bad bottled ranch salad dressing. The fries were unremarkable and not crisp at all. On a brighter note, if you are from the South and you like sweet iced tea, it was quite good! This is the kind of bad food place that actually makes me yearn for the KFC that used to be at this location. My daughter and I popped in here the other day at lunch time. It was our first time so I had some questions about the menu. The lady taking our order was very rude and she seemed pre-occupied with another employee behind the counter. I believe her name tag said Lindsay but I am not positive. Pretty good! The regular chicken strips were good, but the grilled weren't seasoned at all. The fries were nothing fancy and the ranch chips were good homemade chips! I've been to this location a few times since they've opened because I don't live in Lawrence but am sometimes sent out here for work. I enjoy coming to this place because the food is always cooked to order and the staff is friendly. My only complaint about this current visit is when I walked in i saw there was 1 person behind the counter and the place was nearly empty so I decided to use the restroom real quick. When I got out there was no one at the register. I waited for a minute and decided to yell back, no one came. I went around the counter and saw one of the cooks texting, I was able to get his attention and he finally got someone out to help me. Lawrence is filling up with chicken joints, but I was thrilled that there was going to be another option for chicken wings in addition to the many options for chicken "fingers". I had the 8 wing plate which included fries, toast and a dipping sauce. I had the honey BBQ sauce on the wings and was very pleased with the flavor. Having ordered to-go I expected the fries to be soggy before making it back to my apartment, but to my surprise they were still crispy and were very good. The seasoning on them was a welcome change from the plain french fries that other chicken places have. Decided to give this place a try today for the first time. With only five or six cars in the drive thru I decided to get in line. After 15 minutes I was finally able to place my order. After doing so I wasn't able to move forward from the menu, and a short while after placing my order, the intercom crackled as an employee accidentally keyed their mic and said loud and clear "how come it's only white people ordering this s***". Eventually the line moved ahead and after another ten minute wait I was finally able to receive my food. Had there not been curbs on both side of the drive thru I would have driven away long before placing my order. 25 minutes (yes, I timed it) in a drive thru! This was absolutely one of the worst drive-through experiences I've had. As far as the food goes, the chicken was hot, lightly breaded and tasted good (literally the only reason I'm graciously giving 2 stars instead of one), they were a little small and not exceptional by any means, but at this point my expectations were ridiculously low. The toast looked like cold wonder bread carelessly doused in butter and garlic powder, hardly edible. The fries were hot and well seasoned and adequately portioned. I opted for the Slim's dipping sauce and personally found it rather boring and flavorless. I had my six year old son with me, the cashier took the time to explain and show us the sauce options, explain the sides, etc. My son colored a page, the same cashier took the time to ask him about it and hung it up on their wall. To the corporate owners of slim chickens in Lawrence: Whatever made slims popular in AR just isnt working here. Theres nothing really special about the chicken. I dont know if they changed the recipe or what, but comming from the south theres nothing special about your chicken tenders. It tastes like glorified cafeteria foods and tastes the same. Whatever you did with that first store, please fix it in Kansas because I dont forsee any of these franchises lasting a year or more. Kansans drink bitter tea, tasteless fried chicken already. I had the chicken sandwich today with a side of mac and cheese. The staff was great and the sandwich was really good. Just the right size for lunch. The mac and cheese was pretty good also. My wife and I frequently visit in the evenings and get the slims salad. The salads have always been good. We also get the fried okra with a side of cayenne ranch dipping sauce. It's great.
