Off the corner of 8th and Massachusetts stands a red and white themed restaurant in Lawrence, Kansas. Wings, burgers and oysters are the 3 words directly under the red and white letters spelling out the name of the restaurant, Jefferson's. As I took the short walk from the car into the street-side restaurant, I noticed there was outdoor seating featuring black metal tables and chairs that appeared to be a little outdated. Once I entered the glass door, I was welcomed by a young lady smiling and telling me, "Sit wherever and I will be with you in a second". The smell of fried pickles was strong as I observed the wooden booths and high top tables before deciding to take a seat on the cushioned bar stool at one of the high-top tables.
The lady that greeted me when I walked in wasn't lying when she said she'll be with me in a second. Shortly after sitting down, the woman wearing a black Jefferson's shirt and jeans asked me what I wanted to drink. The waitress's name was Chelsea and she made sure I was enjoying my time at Jefferson's for the whole 47 minutes I was there. I ordered the cheese stix as an appetizer and then concentrated on the multiple TV's displaying sport shows and games. The walls were covered in dollar bills from local customers who created their own designs on the bills, as well as a theme of KU objects mixed in with them. I looked over the menu that featured pictures of the food on the cover and in the background of the words. The menu was a tri-fold, starting with the appetizers and moving right towards the burgers, salads, drinks and the biggest attention grabber, the wings. Since Jefferson's is best known for wings, I couldn't live with myself if I would've ordered anything else.
After receiving my warm, crisp, mozzarella sticks covered in parmesan cheese and seasoning, the waitress took my order. The mozzarella sticks came in a red plastic basket lined with red and white checkered paper featuring the Jefferson's logo and with a marinara sauce in a small plastic cup. The mozzarella sticks were immensely average and not as tasteful as expected, but 15 minutes later, when the wings came out, I was impressed. The 6 boneless wings were smothered in barbeque sauce and arrived along with 3 celery, ranch and a mountain of fries in the same plastic basket. I was very under impressed with the fries that resembled the ones my Mom used to buy from SAMs Club and heat up in the oven. The wings on the other hand, were terrific and blew my mind. I have always been a big fan of Buffalo Wild Wings, but Jefferson's blew their wings out of the water. The coating on the barbeque wings were crisp and flavorful and complimented the tender and thoroughly cooked meat by the bearded chef in the back. I could see his bearded face through the window to the kitchen as he was hard at work trying to give the best result as possible. There is a reason that the wings at Jefferson's are some of the best around town, and it all starts with the bearded chef that I didn't catch the name of. When my waitress, Chelsea, brought me my check, it came on a little piece of white receipt paper totaling out at $8.43. The price was nothing short of my expectations and compared slightly better to other places that serve similar foods. After paying, my waitress and another lady both told me thanks for coming and, "have a great rest of your day". This was a perfect ending to the pleasing meal that I had.
Overall, the experience and atmosphere that I encountered at Jefferson's on 8th and Massachusetts was a great one. I encountered excellent service and thought the layout, cleanliness and had some enjoyable parts of the meals, but not far above average on most things. The wings were the best in town and although the fries and mozzarella sticks were nothing special, I really enjoyed being there. read more
