This is a standard takeout place for our family. I've not written a review in ages, but after seeing a few negative ones on Yelp, decided to rate my recent visit. We ordered the family dinner, with fried pickles & onion rings as our sides. Smoked turkey & brisket are what we always get for our generous half pound meat choices. We also added a slab of ribs (we have teenagers). Once again, everything was hot & fresh, crispy or soft and smoky; all as expected. No food leftover between the 4 of us. Just finger-licking food at VERY reasonable prices. The staff were- as always- cheerful & knowledgable, and we got a variety of their house-made bbq sauces. My fav is the hot vinegar, but to each his own! This will continue to be our go-to for Lawrence bbq. read more

This is painful. I've loved this place for years. You can see my past reviews. The last two times pretty bad. The first I let it go but tonight it's not eatable. The once sacred brisket is beyond chewable. I'd rather them just not sell it if they aren't going to cook it. I've gone other times when it was sold out and just had to pivot to something else. That's fine. But, to wrap this up and try to pawn it off as anything good it simply wrong. The only thing left is the spicy ranch. Best burnt ends anywhere! Hands down. Ribs are always perfect. Fries are crunchy delights. The smoked chicken wings are a religion for me. I live 3 blocks away and I automatically feel better once I place my order. I will never move. Great people too! read more

Was in Lawrence for some errands and really wanted some bbq. We were immediately impressed with the friendliness of the staff. The dining area was nothing too spectacular. But I am not there to look at the dining area. I got a brisket sandwich and a side of beans. My wife got the turkey sandwich and a side of fries. The sandwiches came with plenty of meat on both sandwiches. The beans were delicious. The fries were decent. Overall everything was tasty. we order a side of ribs and my wife and I split it. The meat was tender and came off the bone easily but it was still pretty fatty and then greasy. The service is excellent. We were greeted in such a welcoming way we felt like old friends tho this was our 1st visit. The menu was explained with enthusiasm. We quickly got our food. It was juicy, flavorful and delicious. Highly recommend the fried green beans and baked beans. The smoked turkey, pulled pork and ribs are fantastic. The meat fell off the rib bones. I did a drive through and got a dinner for my family. My favorite item on the menu is the fried green beans, oh my, just yummy!! We got 1 lb smoked turkey, fried green beans, baked potato with pulled, pork brisket sandwich and onion rings. Everything was delicious, perfectly cooked and the baked potato was large. Stopping for the evening after 8hrs drive from Colorado Spring we choose BBQ - when in Kansas you must. Dinning in is not open so we did drive-thru and ate at the hotel. I was in Lawrence visiting a friend and she recommended we come here for some amazing BBQ and boy, was she right! My friends and I each ordered a BBQ plate which comes with a choice of 2 meats and 2 sides. I went with ribs and burnt ends. *insert drooling emoji* For my sides, I chose the potato salad and fried pickles. The meat on the rib fell easily off the bone and there was plenty of meat. The burnt ends were so juicy and flavorful and the meat was not burnt to a crisp like other places who do burnt ends. My favorite was finding pieces that have some fat but weren't too fatty. The fried pickles were fried perfectly and that breading was *chefs kiss* delicious. I liked that the pickles were spears and despite getting our order to go, the breading was not soggy at all. The potato salad was so so and wouldn't order it again BUT I had a bite of a friends side of coleslaw and I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor! It isn't a mayo based coleslaw and would definitely recommend you go with that. They have also have a handful of different sauces you can get with your BBQ. I liked the hot BBQ sauce because it had spice but wasn't overpowering. You have to check them out if you're in the area. read more

First time visiting there today. The staff and the food was amazing. But I couldn't get over the lobby smell. I used to be a custodian for many years and it smelled like they use the same mop to clean the bathrooms and then it went straight to the lobby without dumping their bucket or changing their mop. Like a bathroom in the lobby. Smell is not what you're going for. Great place to eat, but obviously lazy custodian or no custodian. Change your mop water that's nasty. read more

The sign on their front entrance reads "11:00 a.m. to 8:00 pm (or until the food is gone)." I had some friends from out-of-town visiting Lawrence who love BBQ. I suggested Biemers. We arrived around 7:20 pm. There were several customers in front of us waiting to order so I suggested to my friends that they have a seat in the dining area and I would wait on line to order our food. Dinner was on me. There were customers seated at 5 or 6 of the dinning tables enjoying their dinner. Although there were at least 8 employees on duty, most of them were engaged in non-customer service duties, i.e. clean-up, and even though there were several registers available only one was open, and only one employee was taking orders at the counter so it took around 10 to 15 minutes get to the front of the order line. When it was my turn the first thing i was asked was if "to-go" was okay. I wasn't sure what they were getting at so i asked for clarification. The girl taking orders said that starting at 7:30 pm everything was to go only, and we couldn't enjoy our food in the dining area. I explained my situation. That didn't phase the gal. I pointed out that the sign showed they were open til 8 and that we had walked in the door a good 40 minutes before closing. She shrugged her shoulders as if 4she could care less. "That's our policy." She couldn't even find the decency and common courtesy to say "I am sorry." I asked her where it was posted "dining area closes at 7:30." "It don't," she stated matter of factly.​ It's just our policy." I explained that we would not have wasted fifteen plus minutes of our time had we known of their unwritten "policy." "Is the manager or owner available." "He ain't here. But even if he were, you'd be wasting your time. He does everything his way." "Well, I do things my own way as well, so no, take out is not okay. We will go elsewhere, and we won't ever be coming back". She didnt seem to çare. She seemed more focused on clocking out by her deadline so she wouldn't lose her job. I forgot to tell them that I will tell my friends, and also leave a few appropriate reviews on-line. This place started as a hole in the wall at a gas station and after it opened at this location several years ago it took off. For four or five straight years it won Lawrence Magazine's "best BBQ in Lawrence" award. But their string of consecutive wins ended five years ago. I think I know why. The customer service sucks. How hard would it have been to post a few signs stating that starting at 7:30 it's take out only. This is the same owner who used to allow his employees to prominently display a tip jar at the counter. That practice ended when I complained to the owner that if he couldn't afford to play his help a decent wage then he shouldn't be in business. (Imagine going to McDonald's and seeing a tip jar at the register) Apparently the owner is more concerned with saving a little on payroll rather than being a good and decent human being and providing minimally acceptable customer service. I used to come here quite a bit and would always see familiar faces. Now it seems like employee turnover is much higher. New faces every time and not many of them smiling. And two of the dudes in the cooking area looked like they were on furlough from prison. The kind of people people who you wonder whether they wash their hands after going to the bathroom. UGH. GROSS. Thus isnt the first time owner greed and arrogance will cause a once decent restaurant to fail. And it won't be the last. read more

Great place if you want good bbq with just a short wait. Husband and I split a 2 meat plate and added 2 ribs (because of so many great recommendations of the ribs). We had plenty of good! Brisket and pulled pork were good but ribs were fall off the bone tender. Fried green beans were good for something different and the macaroni salad was excellent. There's a variety of sauces from hot, vinegar to sweet and sweet with a tang. Prices were a bit higher than the website listed, but still very reasonable and a lot of food for the price. Stopped by on my way home from KC to Denver. Not very good. Over-Rated. Had brisket which was okay at best. Pulled pork was a tad bit better but not really. And coleslaw was the worst coleslaw I ever had in my lifetime. I've had coleslaw throughout our country and never really thought you could mess it up, but OMG you can! Went for dinner on recommendations here. The staff that greeted us was very friendly and helped go over the menu. My son got the Pulled Pork Sandwich which he said was very good and had good flavor. I got the burnt ends and baked beans. The burnt ends were fantastic very tender and juicy. They had a good smoky flavor as well. Not fatty and plenty of meat with a good crust. The baked beans were good but average. I did try several different sauce sweet, sweet & tangy, hot and they were all good. The hot was not HOT but had a little kick. The restaurant overall was very clean and I saw the staff wiping tables and even the sauce bottles down as people left. They have a mix of booths and tables. The staff came over to check on how everything was and provided excellent, friendly service. I would definitely recommend Biemers for decent, reasonably priced BBQ. read more

Exceptional BBQ in Lawrence and highly recommended. On my recent business trip here I think I was here 4 times in 4 days. If I didn't love Yello Sub so much to would have been here more. Sausage, pulled pork, fried pickles, onion rings were a few of the things I tried. I LOVED the fried pickles, almost like one of those large circular deli pickles cut lengthwise in 4 and deep fried. Just awesome. The meats were smoked so well, sauces to me all seemed on the peppery side (which is fine). Based on the lunch and dinner crowds it appears the word is out for this place. We had the sampler which is 2 lbs of meat, 4 ribs, and 4 wings plus two enormous side portions. Everything was delicious. The ribs fell off the bone. The pulled pork was tender with great flavor. Brisket was lean and delicious. Wings had a nice crusted skin on them. The potato salad is amazing. The BBQ beans are great and come with chunks of meat. Portions could feed four easily. Super deal under 40 bucks. Big fan of their sauce selection as well. There is a sauce there for everyone. My favorite was probably the sweet. read more

I have tried bbq throughout the country. And I stopped here based on the recommendation of several people and the great reviews. I guess I got there on a REALLY bad day. I ordered pulled pork, brisket, and burnt ends. The staff was extremely friendly and the place was clean. That's why they got two stars instead of one. Meats: The pulled pork was extremely dry and had no flavor. The brisket had no smoke flavor and even though I didn't think it was possible it was drier than the pork. The burnt ends were ok at best although they weren't burnt ends they were chopped brisket. So I did what I always do when the bbq is bad. Smothered it in bbq sauce. After one bite I just threw it all away. The bbq sauce was not good. Sides: I had baked beans, coleslaw, and fries. The baked beans were edible but nothing you couldn't get in a can and add liquid smoke. The coleslaw was the worst I have ever tried. I can't even describe the flavor except maybe battery acid. The fries were actually very good. Of maybe at that point I was so hungry and desperate for shutting positive. Stay away. Even if this was just a bad day, one should never have served what I received that day. read more

This was absolutely disgusting. "Brisket" was a joke, if you don't know how to cut the meat properly you can't even come close to cooking it correctly. Turkey was soft and flavorless, sausage was something out of the Hillshire isle, and the beans tasted like ketchup. Lunch meat at BEST but this was more like dog food! I realize I'm not fro my the area and I'm overcharged for an inferior product but this place is legit. For barely over $30 I had ribs, burnt ends, pulled pork, and slaw. Holy food overload! We got the family special which felt like a family buffet. Wings, Smoked Sausage, Pulled pork, ribs, turkey, brisket, buns, 4 drinks and 2 sides (fries & beans) ...yep holy food comatose! The food was great the sausage, pork and ribs were the fav on this trip. No pic this time but it's worth the stop if you are coming through or headed this way. They have a selection of BBQ sauces on the tables or you can get them to go. The sweet and tangy was our visit hit. We tried all of them - for the vinegar bbq lovers there is one as well not to my taste but there's one....the HOT is no joke it's hot and is mouth on fire with milk type of experience. The place is on the smaller side but when eating BBQ it's a close and family event right. Pull up a chair sit by a friend and enjoy. The staff are super nice. Be prepared it's overwhelming trying to figure out what you want when it tastes as good as it smells. read more
