We were in the mood for BBQ and this gem was a stone's throw from our hotel. With an hour to spare until they closed at 8 pm, we hustled over to order our meaty goodness. Service was friendly and fast and we loved that they had a drive thru option. Decor was vintage fast food chic, if that's a thing. ;-) We got our food to go so we could get our grumpy toddler to sleep and were expecting the food not to travel well. Wrong! We ordered two BBQ plates (2 meat, 2 sides) so we could sample and share. The meat was served in styrofoam containers and the sides separately. I am fortunate to have the luck of the Irish because I got the last of the burnt ends for the day (hallelujah! They were amazing). We also got pulled pork, brisket and smoked turkey. The pulled pork was so dang tender and falling apart. They even put a bun in each container, which allowed me to make the pork sandwich I was contemplating. The brisket and and turkey DID resemble deli meat, as another review mentioned. Makes sense, since they use a deli slicer to cut it fresh. We actually liked the turkey better than the brisket. It had more flavor. For sides, we split fries, beans, sweet tots and fried pickles. The fries were crispy and fresh but nothing special. Hubby liked the sweet tots but I thought they were too sweet for our savory meal, covered in some sugar concoction. The fried dill pickles (4 pickle spears, not pickle chips) were yummy with the spicy and regular ranch they provided. The beans were rich in flavor (their house sauce with a kick) and had huge chunks of meat. As newbies, they gave us sample cups of all of the sauces (we liked the sweet and sweet and tangy). However, they gave us no napkins, wet wipes or plastic ware. As out of towners, this was unfortunate. Luckily, I am an organized nerd and had these goodies packed for our road trip. Real solid BBQ, and super friendly. Plus, when you're in the drive thru next to the active (live) smoker it all feels right. What struck me about Biemer's BBQ (ribs, pulled pork, and burnt ends) is how clean the taste was. Some BBQ places over smoke their meat or burn a nasty fire, leaving your mouth overwhelmed by thick smoke. BBQ here was delicate and the flavor of the meat was pristine. I'm not a huge BBQ aficionado so it's hard for me to judge here but I will say the staff - even at 15 minutes to closing!- were super-friendly and helpful. That's big in my book. I tried the 2-meat plate which came with 2 sides. All for around $13 bucks it was easily enough food for 2 people. Brisket was tender and turkey was moist and had some flavor - I'd definitely want that turkey on a sandwich! As they say: their BBQ is so good it doesn't need sauce and I'd say that's true! I tried a bit of their house sauce and the sweet & tangy and they were both very good, but not necessary. I have 30+ years of BBQ eating experience. I have 20+ years of creating BBQ. I know good BBQ when I eat it and I found it at Biemer's. The burnt ends from Biemer's are simply one of the most delicious bites of BBQ I've ever had in my life. After exclaiming, "oh my god" for the sixth time while devouring my half-pound order, I knew that I had found something special. I also tried the ribs and they were tasty also, but those burnt ends were from a higher power. The drive thru fella forgot to give me a fork and napkins and it wound up being a fantastic omission as I got to enjoy every last morsel of that sweet sweet burnt end meat from me fingies. We came to Lawrence to attend a football game. We typically try to eat at non-chain restaurants when out of town. Being from Oklahoma, we were on the search for BBQ. Biemers had some good reviews so we thought we would try it. We both chose to have the rib dinner. Sides were fried green beans and coleslaw on one and the macaroni salad and potato salad. The ribs were tender and had a great flavor. The sides were equally as good. The staff was friendly and patient was we made our selections. Oh. My. Gosh. We are traveling through and stopped for the night. The desk clerk at our hotel recommended Biemer's BBQ. It was impressive. The entire staff was friendly and chatted. We were two of 5 folks in the restaurant, so they had time. They were polite, helpful and funny. The food. Where do I begin? Portions were large and everything tasted fantastic. The wife and I both got BBQ Plates. Two meats and two sides. Total of ONE POUND of meat. At 6' 3" and 230 pounds, I was able to eat half. Brought the rest home for a second meal. She had burnt ends and brisket, baked beans and deep-fried green beans. I had sausage and brisket, onion rings and baked beans. I truly wish that they weren't 8 hours away from home. We were in town to visit the University and we fell in love.. My husband had the full slab of ribs and they were literally falling off the bone with each bite. I had the smoked wings and asked for a side of Ranch- no sauce or dip was needed. The wings were HUGE and cooked to perfection. The fried pickles had a light batter and were very juicy; my daughter absolutely loved her pulled sandwich. When we got to the restaurant they were going to close in less than one hour and you wouldn't have known. They did not rush us and took plenty of time answering our questions and explaining the menu. Chose this place based on all the positive reviews. Unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed. The staff was very friendly and got order fairly quick. The meat was tender but pretty bland. The burnt end weren't burnt enough. It was basically chunck of brisket cut from outside edges. The macaroni salad had way too much sweet pickle for our taste. The bread was basically a hamburger bun. Stopped in for dinner while in town on a college visit to KU. The place smelled so great the moment I stepped inside, I knew I was in for something special. Ordered the ribs, brisket, beans and macaroni salad. The ribs were incredible. Tender, smokey, and undeniably mouthwatering. I had picked up some of the sauces, but they were not really needed. The brisket was also tender with an outstanding smoke flavor. Really appreciated the variety of sauce options. I preferred the sweet/tangy and the original sauces. The beans were sweet, hot, and rich with flavor. Really liked the chunks of meat mixed in. The finale was the macaroni salad, which was the best I've ever had. The dressing has just the right amount of tangy flavor to complement the crunchy bits of veggies. Wow! I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town to try the other meats. I've been to Biemer's a few times now, and they're pretty consistent with their quality. Easy brisket, or pulled pork sammies have been my choice. The meat straight has mostly had a pretty good moisture, texture, and flavor by itself. They do offer a pretty good selection of five sauces in addition as well. The atmosphere is pretty laid back and reminds me of a local, down-home fast food joint. I've had okay service from the staff.. Great food for the price, a little dry and the guy taking the order wasn't really paying much attention to me, or my sister, and got mine wrong, even though I repeated that i wanted pork three times. The food, I can't say I agree with some of the others on here. It was a little dry, but it was late in the evening close to closing. I tasted the sauce by it self, and the meat by it self, then ate it together. The sauces are mostly sweat sauces, aside from the hot vinegar. Mixing the hot vinegar with others produces a great taste in several instances. To my pallet there is NO liquid smoke in the sauce. The meat, alone, did in fact taste smokey, hopefully due to actually being smoked. Considering the affordability and availability of smoking woods, there is no reason it shouldn't be. What would be great, is if they picked up local smoking woods, and local meats for their work, but I haven't really collected those details. What I got was brisket, turkey, potato salad, and the fried pickles which were a little under done. The potato salad was great, I am often disappointed by "unique" formulas for potato salads, but this one was pleasant and repeatable. The atmosphere was neat, and a little retro, which is nice. I was craving some BBQ at lunch, so I decided to run to Biemer's, since I stick to my belief that it's the best BBQ in Lawrence...but that Lawrence is also a really mediocre BBQ town for being so close to Kansas City. I ordered a regular pork sandwich and a side of fries, since it was on special - came with a regular drink for $7.50 or so. I felt this might have been slightly steep, but not terrible. Anyways, in my last review I said that consistency is the problem here, and I still stand behind that. The pork had a delicious taste but was slightly on the dry side. The fries were crinkle fries (the best of all fries) and had a nice seasoning on them...something different than just your plain old salted fries. Not a huge side of fries, but fine. I am not, however, a huge fan of the sauces here. On the table has three kinds - a regular, a sweet/tangy (or something like that) and a vinegar. It smelled terrific when we walked inside. I ordered pulled pork sandwich, fried pickles, and a large drink, and my friend had the special, smoked turkey, fries and a drink. Total was $21, which seemed high. The sandwiches were wrapped in foil on a plastic tray. No plates. The pork was very dry, and had a funny smell but tasted ok. The bun was small and the overall size of the sandwich was a bit disappointing. The fried pickles were spears vs. slices (I prefer sliced) and were a bit undercooked. I walked in the door and the first thing I heard was, "how are you?" (too a gentlemen in line.) In response to this question, the man said "I am fat." The cashier remarked back, "join the party." Lawrence BBQ has always been a tough thing to find in comparison to KC BBQ, but Biemer's does it well. Created within a building that has been born again as many different shops, Biemer's has grafted itself into the natural fabric of Lawrence restaurant culture. I had a pulled pork sandwich and fries, both were excellent and the sauces they serve are all refreshing in their own way, the sweet sauce, featuring the use of black pepper is exceptional (If only they carried the dogfish head 'Sea Quench Ale' which also features the use of black pepper.) Overall, it was a great experience and if my testimony is not enough, refer to the previous words "I am fat," for I tend to live by the idea that if anyone knows where the good food is, its the people that eat it a lot. read more
