Surprised that this place has more than two stars. Restaurant is not very clean, to begin with. Some of the sides are ok (onion rings), but the beans are on fire! (When does bbq=super hot spicy?) Burnt ends were over cooked, dry, and stringy. The fried chicken (Sunday only) wasn't completely battered, so over cooked and stringy where that was missing. Really a place to avoid. Firstly, this place is a lot bigger on the inside than you would think! They were packed today at lunch, and now I know why. Huge portions, I got the two meat plate with two sides, and man was it good. I would recommend the pulled pork and cheese corn, so far. They have 4 BBQ sauces, I believe. I liked the carolina style and the spicy BBQ sauce. Doug was running the bar and he was great. They do mocktails if you are a non drinker but also have drink specials and plenty of variety when it comes to booze. I will be coming back next time I'm in Lawrence. Although when i first walked and the host was getting ready to take us to our table the manager walked up and very rudely and loudly said "seat yourself". Speaking I'm from KC the BBQ here isn't as good as the places from home but still a great spot. Always happy to eat here and as a college student it doesn't break my wallet. There is so much to like about this place, even as a Texan. But not so much the brisket (...blame it all on my roots). I opted for Bigg's because of its philosophy of not drenching everything in sauce. First, the service here is outstanding. The atmosphere is very much like a Chili's or Applebee's -- quasi-dark with decently sized tables. Beer selection also includes some local quaffs. The food here is fresh and served in a timely manner. We had an appetizer and a sampler platter. Read on... Appetizer -- The barbecued egg rolls are interesting and delicious. Creamy and smoky, served with Thai sweet chile sauce. Good stuff. Fun. Brisket -- Dry with no fat. If you're from New York, you'll probably love it. If you're from Texas, you'll immediately notice that there's no pink smoke ring. Chopped and placed on a bun, it's probably OK. But it leaves a lot to be desired otherwise. Ribs -- It's difficult to screw up ribs. So long as they are cooked low and slow, they'll fall off the bone. Such was the case with the Babyback and St. Louis-style. Tender with a little smoke flavor. I'd eat them again. Chicken -- Good. Slightly smoky and tender. Burnt Ends -- Surprisingly good. Tender and smoky with a little char. These were the star of the show for me (my wife preferred the ribs). Sides -- The fried okra is some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant. Not sure what they use to bread it (cracker meal maybe?) but it totally gets there; Cole slaw is crunchy and creamy deliciousness; Potato salad was cold and creamy, but a little too sweet for my taste (again, this might be a local version). I was raised on outstanding barbecue ... not only homemade, but the local (Texas) pits. As a rule, Texas barbecue must have a smoke ring and it should melt in your mouth. Why am I saying this? Merely to clarify that I'm reviewing this place from a Lone Star perspective. -- I really like that Bigg's lets the customer decide on the sauce. I'm partial to a vinegar-based spicy sweet concoction, and Bigg's offers it up, along with several other regional versions. I also really like that there are plenty of options for mains and sides here. Bottom line: If I lived here, I'd eat here regularly -- sans the brisket and potato salad. There wasn't a very good selection of sauce and the sauces they had did not really stand out. If you have read my other reviews, you know that I absolutely love barbecue. In my opinion, any barbecue is better than no barbecue. Unfortunately, I don't know if that would be true here. My food was not very warm. The meat was not very flavorful and needed whatever sauce I could find in order to add flavor. The ribs were so tough that I actually only ate half of one of them. Let me start by saying: I am hardly a BBQ lover. I love food, sometimes BBQ, but often I find it to be too heavy and overwhelming. I sometimes go days without eating meat. The meat here is phenomenal quality and I will be coming back again and again when I get that itch for a heaping plate of it. The portions here are awesome given the prices. Totally worth it for a meal of this type, with so much labor intensive food on one plate. The root beer was good, at first it was sort of twangy but it got better as I kept drinking it. I knocked down a star mostly because of service. Our receipt said "free fries" on it but I had no idea what that was referring to. After reading some reviews, I see that typically people get free fries to try the sauces but that didn't happen for us. Our waitress was generally very forgetful and not super present. We came at a slow time so I can't make many excuses for her. She also didn't answer any of my questions with genuine answers and it was VERY apparent. I sort of wonder if she had ever had the food there. Maybe she just didn't like us. It was also SO dark in there. It felt like a dingy bar walking in and out. My family and I were in town for graduation and we had drove from Iowa, with intention of hitting a great BBQ experience. We found your place just down from our hotel and had amazing food, just stuffing ourselves. Arthur was our waiter who was kind and demonstrated professional hospitality as our server. We ate Friday evening and enjoyed it so much we decided to return on our last evening on Sunday (mothers day), to enjoy once again. We were fortunate enough to have Arthur serve us again for our large group of 10 and not only did he provide great service but was very professional and timely with our food. The food was excellent and we were just grateful for our family enjoying amazing BBQ, with Arthur's fantastic service. Never eaten here before and will never come back again. We ordered a half order of fried pickles and their house fries both gross soggy fries and fried pickles that the breading fell off the pickles. Then we ordered 2 Cobb salads mine was gross. They really do not know to how make a Cobb salad. I mentioned to my lousy waitress about my salad yes it was taken off but the whole experience was bad. I took off a star because when we were seated the booth was dirty so I just wiped it off because I know as a server you can't get every spot. My boyfriend and I went after 4 on a Thursday afternoon. We ordered ginger ale and it was carbonated and crisp. We ate the complimentary fries so that my boyfriend could try the 3 different house sauces, he liked them and approved of the fries as well. We are French fry people and the best fries in Lawrence are from Terrebonne's po boy, here or Dairy Queen is you're on the go! Our server was attentive and made sure our drinks always filled. My favorite side dish has always been the baked beans but I was bummed to find out they were made with pork rib instead of beef brisket, if they could have the option that would be great because I know a lot of people including my boyfriend who don't/cannot eat pork. I didn't get any pictures of the food here it was a takeout order and it was very mediocre barbecue. The burners were the driest I've ever had. Didn't have smoked turkey, which is pretty good and the sauce was pretty good as well. But there are better spots for barbecue in Lawrence and in Kansas City. I have fish, nut and pork allergies and I did not get sick from eating the turkey or burnt ends. So they were good on their cross-contamination. read more
