This place was pretty underwhelming and really disappointing. The ribs and pulled pork were really dry and needed a lot of BBQ sauce. The BBQ sauce was very average as well. The burnt ends were decent, but the Mac and cheese itself was bland. Reviews said the burnt end mac & cheese were to die for, but resulted in mediocrity. Placed my order at the bar with the bartender so I could enjoy the St. Louis Blues hockey game. Ordered a salmon sandwich and a side of beans.The bartender had difficulty finding it on the menu and stated that they change their menus every month. I told him I just ordered it last week when I was in town. Finally the bartender placed the order and failed to mention it came with fries and anything else will be an up charge. When the sandwich came out it looked great and the barbecue beans didn't look so great. The bun was a little bit dry and the 6oz salmon filet was cooked perfect. The barbecue beans had a stronger taste of liquid smoke. I didn't complain and I did not eat the beans or the bun. However, after the bill came and I noticed the sandwich was $15 and they charged an extra dollar for the barbecue beans. When I said something to the bartender he stated the sandwich normally comes with french fries and the beans are an up charge. Note: when placing the order he did not mention an up charge for the barbecue beans. When the food came out there were no french fries on the plate. So basically I was charged an extra dollar and did not get the fries that supposedly came with the Sandwich and was not given the opportunity to decline the up charge barbecue beans. Needless to say I do not recommend this restaurant they are overpriced and their staff is poorly trained. BBQ so good even pigs would approve! I have only eaten here twice and both times it was delivery. At first I was not sure what to expect. To be honest, this was not my first Go-To choice. I was at work and working with a student when we both got very hungry. All the nearby venues were closed and we had limited delivery options. My student decided on BBQ so I figured I'd give it a try. I am not a BBQ aficionado by any means. To me the differences are very subtle and it's just not my preference. The food arrived timely and it was very warm as if it had just come from the oven. It smelled delicious, as well. The BBQ was so tender and moist. I had ordered a brisket sandwich and it was amazing. It has just the right amount of sauce and seasoning, too. It was not swimming in sauce, either. My sides were scrumptious, as well. I had macaroni and cheese and a veggie. Both sides were very tasteful and not merely thrown together. There was more than enough food and it was all yummy. Now my student did not like his meal. I suspect, though, that he was just being obstinate and stubborn. The food is very good and there is a large variety. I really like the pulled pork but I have not had anything that I didn't like. This restaurant is not known as a place to get healthy food. But if you go there and have unhealthy food, don't blame Bigg's. Blame yourself. It is not at all hard to make healthy choices here, such as spinach salad, salmon, and veggie burgers from Local Burger, with whole wheat buns. If you want to avoid the sugar in the BBQ sauce, ask for Tobasco sauce, which they have and contains no sugar at all. There are many choices of sides. The healthiest have a small upcharge, such as the sweet potato fries and the sauteed spinach (which they'll saute in olive oil instead of butter, if you ask). Bigg's has wifi, but you'll need the password. I probably should not reveal it online, but if you ask the server, you'll have no difficulty in acquiring the password. read more

As a North Carolina native, I even have to admit that theirs was some of the best vinegar-based sauce I've had. The pulled pork was amazing! Biggs is a great place to go and have a great meal and watch the game with friends. The appetizers are all half price every night after 9, which is usually the reason we visited Biggs. They have specials and events throughout the week, including a trivia night that seems popular, though I've never participated. They also have root beer and diet root beer on tap, which is quite tasty! The quality of the food is wonderful, and servers have told us that they make most everything homemade. The appetizers are all great, and we've had our fair share! My favorite appetizer is the pulled pork egg rolls, served with a sweet chili sauce. They're crispy on the outside, and creamy on the inside. The pulled pork quesadillas, served with awesome homemade salsa are also a winner. The burnt ends (they're on the appetizer menu too!) are always our go-to pick, but they oftentimes sell out of them. We've also tried the onion rings and the stuffed jalapenos, and both were good. As far as the barbecue and sides, the meats are always moist and smoky. There are 3 sauces available, for which the servers bring a few French fries for sampling. I like the sweet and the spicy sauce mixed together! Their ribs are well seasoned and tender, and the smoked meats are also tasty. I've tried the smoked mac and cheese, fries, warm potato dish, and broccoli slaw. Their fries are a-mazing (and handcut!). The other sides were just ok. The only thing I've ever been disappointed in is the broccoli salad, which was limp and a little sad. We were in KC to see family. We also had family in Lawrence. We always like to eat BBQ while in town. We live in Denver and there are only a few barbecue places we enjoy. After eating Bbq for 3 days our sons said no more! So while in Lawrence saw Biggs Barbecue menu and thought we would try so our sons could have something else on menu. So glad we tried this place. Tried this for the our first BBQ excursion since moving here from Colorado. Ordered a sampler to try as much as possible. Also added an order of BBQ egg rolls. Nice portion sizes to begin with. Both style ribs were very tender and delicious but I give the nod to the St.Louis style. More meat and flavor. Brisket was good not great. Pork was excellent. Chicken was the star of the show. Great flavor, stood on its own, without sauce was just as good. Corn bread muffins were less than average. Very dry and dense made a drink absolutely necessary throughout the duration. Sides were all excellent. Cheesy corn bake was phenomenal! BBQ beans were tremendous! The coleslaw paired perfect with the pork! The egg rolls were a pleasant surprise ordered out of pure curiosity. We came in on Sunday for a birthday party and the much celebrated all you can eat fried chicken. The restaurant is comfy and the staff is friendly. The fried chicken... Be aware that it takes 25 minutes to get this dish because of the cooking process. The special comes with two sides. We ordered broccoli and mashed potatoes with white gravy. Both were very small portions, but good. The chicken is, sadly, nothing to write home about. It is your average fried chicken, very little spice and flavor. It definitely does not warrant it's own menu. We would not order again. Get the BBQ here. You will be much happier. read more

I love barbecue and was staying in a nearby hotel when I decided to treat myself with what I thought was a Lawrence staple. I love to smoke meat myself and try different varieties around the country. It was the second worse bbq I've had in my life. I ordered the pork sandwich with fries and beans. The pork was slabs of tough overcooked meat with giant veins of chewy fat running through it on a soggy bun. Clearly cooked too hot and fast. The fries were like soggy noodles rolled into a snowball form. I can't comment on the beans because I wasn't given any silverware to eat them with. Also NOT a Covid conscious place upon pickup. 19 March 2022, 19:30. Returning from assignment and decided to order take out for the wife and myself on the way in. Order was placed 30 minutes in advance to negate any possible delays. Arrived, was presented the bill, and then informed that my order had never been placed. Their reply was, "we'll get it in, have a nice day", so I got to wait an additional 25 minutes since, at this point, fast food was the only option, essentially ruining the remaining plans for the evening. Their food portioning and quality is, on a par, roughly average with competing establishments in the area. Since one of the great treasures in the greater Kansas City area is barbecue, if you are interested in a staff and management that are customer focused and service oriented, you can certainly do better. read more

Bigg's is my favorite Lawrence BBQ place. Two things feed into this opinion in particular: they have great sides and service is always fast and friendly. I have never had to wait on a table at Bigg's, which is great. They have quite a bit of space despite their smallish facade. They also do take-out if you want to enjoy some BBQ at home. Come watch a game and get your meat on! (Disclaimer: I have never tried to come during a KU bball game - I assume it does get pretty busy then.) I'm a fan of the two-meat platter, since I'm indecisive. It's around $10 I believe, which is awesome for how much food you get. Almost always get a box to take home. I have enjoyed most of their meats, perhaps the pulled pork is my favorite. Usually nice and succulent. They have most of the typical things you'd find: ribs, burnt ends, chicken, brisket, turkey, sausage. The only thing that offended me at Bigg's was their sausage, as it's full of fennel, and I really don't like fennel much. If you like fennel, go for it! I so enjoy their sauces. My favorite thing is their sides. Love them. I could probably just get a platter of sides. When I get BBQ, I am happy if I can get macaroni and cheese, and they've got it. They changed the recipe a little, I believe, in the last year or so, but it's still good. Yes it's sort of congealed, but I enjoy it. But better than macaroni and cheese - warm twice-baked potato salad. It's something terrible for sure - terribly delicious! They've also got sweet potato fries, amongst their 10 or so side offerings. Eh, Bigg's is ok I guess. I sometimes wonder if the University of Kansas Athletic Department and the various programs throughout the University single handedly keep Biggs in business. Watching Biggs BBQ cater on campus has been a regular occurrence for years. Also, Biggs along with Jefferson's have played host to various athlete's and visiting dignitaries for KU. Smart business move indeed. Then again, what other BBQ choices are in Lawrence? No, Gran Daddy, Famous Dave's, and Buffalo Bob's are not viable options. Biemers BBQ is a good fifth choice most days. It's really difficult to judge BBQ in other cities if you grew up on KC, Texas, or Southern BBQ. In fact, it's almost impossible because the bar has been sit so high that judging impartially rarely exist. That being said, Biggs frustrates the hell out of me more times than not. The word "inconsistent" should be included in their title. I agree that BBQ is a very difficult science to perfect 100% of the time. Heck, I'd take a 50/50 split with BBQ joints in Lawrence. Biggs is either pretty good BBQ or downright terrible and borderline criminal! Their beef brisket is fairly consistent of all the menu items. Everything else on the meat menu has been so up and down I don't even know where to begin. The burnt ends piss me off to no end. I mean seriously, these things are inedible by human standards. The ribs have been delicious at various times and again, not fit for human consumption on other occasions. My advice is to NEVER order the rib tips. EVER!$$! The beans at Biggs are pretty good and always on point. Potato salad and cole slaw is excellent. French fries are usually nice and hot. Other times they are served cold and flimsy. Sweet potato fries are the same as regular fries. In fact, all the various sides at Biggs are really good. The salads at Biggs are sometimes pretty tasty. My biggest beef with the salads are they use pre packaged lettuce and this kills the potential of Biggs salads. I've had the salmon salad that tasted like rubber and the greens in the salad were brown and had icicles on it. The BBQ salad dressing is excellent. I'm warning you right now that the menu at BIggs is a monstrosity and sometimes confusing. Chinese type foods, mexican, BBQ, burgers, bar food, pre-made desserts......way too much food that screams prepackaged frozen stuff. Prices are borderline high for what you get on certain menu items. Service is hit or miss like any place in Lawrence, Kansas. I don't know.....Biggs has potential and a staple on the Lawrence BBQ scene for years. So, people around these parts must feel comfortable with what Biggs offers. I personally think Biggs has way too many shortcomings and will likely never address these issues as long as the University of Kansas keeps throwing money at them on a monthly basis. read more

Biggs is by far the best BBQ in Lawrence and I honestly crave their sweet potato fries on a bi-daily basis. I get the pulled pork platter and Chris, my Biggs Dining freind always gets the pork chops. The cheesy corn side dish is so good and the sweet BBQ sauce is the perfect side. We branched out and ordered the pulled pork nachos for an appetizer and they were really good. This was my second foray involving mexican/BBQ(see Will Jennys review) and I am liking the combo. Biggs has great drink specials. I know I have indulged in $2 beers and $2 margaritas(small but not greedy on the tequila). They appear to get tons of catering business--I've seen the Biggs truck outside the football complex more than a few times on my walks-- and the restaurant has sort of the sports bar thing going but a bit dated. The food is just OK. Not great. The menu is downright confusing. Hello, Restaurant Impossible. How about concentrating on a few good things and doing them well and not try to cover the entire gamut of possibilities? Still, I find myself here from time to time. If you're just wanting a beer and a sandwich it's good enough. Funny story, and I tell everyone, and now Yelp will hear it. About a year ago I was having lunch here with friends. I order something I can't recall and onion rings. Out comes a plate with three small onion rings on it. Waitress "sorry, we're short on rings but we have some being prepared this moment. I'll bring them out." About five minutes later a small plate with a single small onion ring is placed before me. My lunch pals and I look at each other and crack up. "Well, THANK YOU." Hard to get good help in a college town. Come expecting just OK. If you want to get knocked out with quality, head to Kansas City.
