If you go to 925 Iowa Street, you will find a strip mail with a long row of about 15 stores, but none of the businesses in that long building is A Los Tacos. We drove around that strip mail, but could not find the restaurant. I went into one of the stores (a bakery) in that row and asked, but they had never heard of A Los Tacos. Fortunately I found someone in another restaurant at a different address who was able to provide directions to A Los Tacos. It is not in the 925 building, despite its address. It is on the other side of the Merc supermarket behind the Merc at its northwest corner facing 9th Street. While the Merc has a newly paved parking lot, the parking lot in the obscure location of the restaurant behind the Merc is in bad shape. The restaurant is attached to Empire Bar & Billiards. After finding the strangely located restaurant, we returned the next day to try it. The restaurant contains two small but pleasant dining areas. I was pleased to find that they have nonalcoholic beer, which I think they got from the attached billiards parlor. We ordered the chips and queso appetizer and two entrees: Ceviche Misto Shrimp & Fish along with Camarones a la Diabla OR Cucaracha. All was excellent. The queso was warm and enjoyable. The two entrees were perfectly spiced and very fresh. The shrimp were large and excellent, served in their shells. While we appreciate the authenticity of the preparation, next time we might ask if the chef can remove the shells. Since we are pescatarians, we cannot have rice in this restaurant, since it contains chicken stock. But the beans do not and are very good. We hope this restaurant moves to a less obscure location with a better paved parking lot. Part of the restaurant's business seems to be providing food to Empire Bar & Billiards, which I have heard plans to move to a new location on Sixth Street. If so, hopefully A Los Tacos also will move.

When you are ready to leave, they bring you a handwritten check listing the items you ordered and only one number: the total cost of the bill without any itemization. In addition, the restaurant has no website. You cannot be sure of what is currently on the menu without going to the restaurant. They do have a Facebook page, but it does not provide the restaurant's current menu and can be misleading. For example, some of last year's Facebook entries say that they have introduced some new seafood items, such as Aguachile Verde o Rojo and Ceviche. But when we were there, we were informed that those seafood items are seasonal and only on the menu in the summer. We very much enjoyed our dinner there. The dining room is very attractive and large with comfortable booths and a full bar. We were particularly impressed to find that the bar has Corona Nonalcoholic beer. Most Mexican restaurants in Lawrence do not have any nonalcoholic beers, despite their rapidly increasing popularity. The service was excellent as was the food. Since we are pescatarians, we cannot have Mexican rice, which contains chicken stock. But they were happy to substitute black beans for the rice. We got the Filete De Pescado and the Enchiladas Popeye. The Enchiladas Popeye were a bit heavier on cream sauce than we would have preferred, but otherwise were very good. The Filete De Pesado was impressive including two large, thick filet of fish, which were very tasty. In addition to the salsa provided with the chips, I would recommend ordering one of their excellent hot sauces. We got both the tomatillo hot sauce and the habanero hot sauce. I especially liked the tomatillo hot sauce. As expected, the habanero was very hot, unless mixed with the salsa. The restaurant is next door to Set 'Em Up Jack's and is also in the same strip mall in East Lawrence as Moriki Sushi. Needless to say, both of those restaurants have web sites and provide printed checks. If this restaurant were to do the same, I would most certainly change my rating of this restaurant from 4 star to 5 star.

The polite and professional staff gathered our drink order, we selected the pork dumplings as an appetizer, and the drunken noodles with chicken as our entree to split. The dumplings were freshly cooked and fragrant and the broth was very good. They were some of the best ones we have ever had before. The chili crisps were perfect and I ended up eating it by itself after we ran out of dumplings. The drunken noodles with fried chicken were the perfect choice to end an amazing lunch. We would absolutely recommend and return so we can try the masala and classic pork dumplings!
