Please visit a site where they treat their employees with respect and kindness, our server was clearly scare to tell the kitchen that my food was cold fridge cold like it was just pull out of the fridge, let her know about the situation she was afraid to tell them about it and that she will have to pay for the food that was returned, asked for 2 tacos no cheese, unfortunately she got them wrong was extremely anxious to return to the kitchen, order 2 more. We were standing in front of the bakery at 10:55am on a Friday morning; lights off, and seemingly no one present. We began to make other brunch plans... when the woman who would waitress out table arrived. She was let in at 11:00, and we were notified by the man inside that yes- they were opening, if we could just give them a minute. Presently, we were welcomed into a quiet and empty dining area, and asked to choose anywhere to sit. My mom-in-law, a native Mexican, began quickly to ask for coffee (neon sign in window was advertising, but it was nowhere on the menu); the waitress went directly to see if any was available. She returned with a large cup of coffee, a bowl of creamers & sugars, and waters for everyone. What began as sort of an iffy experience became one of my best dining experiences in Lawrence in the past few years. The menu is extensive (some of us ordered breakfast, others ordered lunch); all five of us enjoyed what we'd ordered- breakfast burrito, huevos rancheros, chilaquiles with chorizo, 3 styles enchiladas with cheese sauce, and 3 tacos. The service was prompt and cheerful, the food was fresh and the prices were much lower that you might expect. We ordered 5 churros in different filling flavors, and all were FRESH & hot. We had difficulty discerning flavors but as I'd rather have plain churros, I was very happy; so happy, in fact, that I forgot to take pics until my last bite of churro! My husband was very satisfied with the authenticity of the food and even my mom-in-law (who herself caters Mexican food for private parties), said she'd love to return! No nonsense and simply good Mexican food. Here is a mom and pop place with some solid traditional foods you will want to try. There's nothing fancy about this restaurant. But good lord, you are going to want to come back to start every day with one of their a breakfast burritos! The only sad thing is the day starts at 9am... well. It's a good excuse to take a quick morning break! I met the owners the last time I was there, and what a hard working nice couple they are. A true panaderia, that's Mexican bakery for those of you that don't know, has opened in the strip mall that abuts 19th and Haskell Streets on the East side of Lawrence. Nice article about the family and how this came to be in the Lawrence Times from Nov. 30. Curious, I dropped in today early in the afternoon and breads were just coming out of the oven. It's also a small sit-down restaurant with a few scant items, mostly breakfasts, but some other things, but the focus for now is Mexican style pastries. I wasn't particularly ready to review them but wanted to get them into Yelp's listings because this town needs choices like this. I was warmly greeted upon entering and had a brief chat with someone working there. A few scant tastes of 3 different choices I brought home have me interested in returning. You can also get coffee or hot chocolate and dine in, but I was on foot so tossed my purchases into a backpack for the walk home. Lot parking, plenty of it. I did not check if they are accepting credit cards yet but I wouldn't count on it. Possibly someone else can fill us in on that. Breakfast looks like a winner, eggs with rice & beans and tortillas. Also on the menu, burritos, quesadillas and tortas. All the signage is hand written. Don't expect fancy trappings like that but from my experience and knowing one of the owners has over 10 years of experience working in Lawrence restaurants, my guess is they'll be doing things very well. The last thing Lawrence needed was another taco place but what we really DID need was another legit Mexican restaurant. The food was fantastic, the owners are friendly and my belly is happy. We fed two and had enough leftovers for another full meal for $40, tip included. read more

Called in an order while I was in town, they were very friendly and offered free queso and chips for my Togo order. Walking in the restaurant looks like a typical strip mall bakery. Super underrated!! Just outside the "regular" spots in Lawrence, this place has amazing, authentic food with great service. I am visiting my friend at KU and needed some breakfast, was craving chilaquiles. I got the chorizo chilaquiles with green sauce. Um DELICIOUS!! Please consider giving this place a try. I am from Arizona so we have a ton of authentic Mexican food and I can say that this may have even better than some of the chilaquiles I've had in Mexico. read more

This is probably the best Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico. Tamale was amazing, chips were fresh, quesadilla and burrito were fantastic. The pastries were just the icing on the cake! Small older little restaurant but clean. I tried the supreme nachos with ground beef and chicken. It was very tasty and everything had a good flavor. The beans were super good and lettuce and tomatoes very fresh. The chips and salsa were also very good. It's family owned and they were very friendly. We received good customer service!!!! We stopped in in the early afternoon for a late lunch. I got the quesabirrias which were delicious! Both meals we got were around $10.The meal came with free chips and queso and the quesabirrias were filled with a lot of meat. I stopped by on my way out of Lawrence after reading an article about the pastries. I'm so glad I did. I did not see tamales on the menu until after I already ordered breakfast. My breakfast was great, but the tamales look incredible and harder to get in Lawrence. I want to go back for tamales and the pastries! You have to look for it behind Dollar General at the corner of 19th and Haskell. Yes they take credit cards. read more
