I went in at 5:20 and was told kitchen wouldn't make my food, because they started closing and don't serve people after 5:30. The open sign clearly said open and the front desk lady with brown hair was very rude and the restaurant was open until 6:00. I work in a restaurant myself and this service wouldn't be allowed, but this is very disappointing. I had never been to this restaurant before and won't be giving them a cent of my money ever. My mom and I stopped in for lunch today. Had a nice conversation with the new owner about the recent upgrades they have been doing since taking over. Amazing selection of breads, pastries, and pies. I was there just before Thanksgiving, and astounded at the hard-working, friendly staff as they jammed (literally!) to fill holiday orders. The selection, even the day before Thanksgiving, was incomparable. Went in one morning for coffee and a scone and then again a few days later for lunch. Did have a vegetarian lunch option or two, which I'm always grateful for. Really glad this former convenience store was re-purposed into something so high-quality, local and delicious. Seating seemed ample, so you can dine-in, nothing fancy. One caveat: They only offer basic brewed coffee, which was strong and delicious, but espresso, latte and cold brew lovers will have to look elsewhere. Great neighborhood place. read more

The service was extremely slow. There were five people in the back, screaming yelling, laughing playing music really loud even though there were customers out front waiting. When am I going to learn that some places just do not live up to what they promise. It's not intentional I know that they're probably doing their best but despite that they just can't seem to hit the mark. And that's what I experienced here. This is my first time ever hearing of this place let alone ordering. So because of that I was excited to try something new. First of all I ordered my food through DoorDash because I avoid the downtown Lawrence area. My food was delivered fast and fresh, so what I am about to speak on has absolutely nothing to do with DoorDash because they did their job. Being that it was my first time I wanted to have a monte Cristo sandwich and I love bakery goods so I decided to try their cinnamon roll and cinnamon twist. They also had a drink called "lost trail cream soda", so I ordered that as well. I did not read the reviews on Yelp before ordering so I went into this with my eyes completely open. That being said when the food arrived the first thing I noticed was that my cinnamon roll and cinnamon twist were cold and wrapped in plastic. They were a good size but they were cold. I felt that was kind of weird considering that these are supposed to be fresh baked goods. So to find it cold was a little disheartening. The cream soda came in a bottle with a cap and it was a little small for what they charged me for it but it gave me comfort knowing that it was a drink that no one could tamper with. The biggest disappointment was the Montecristo sandwich. First of all it was extremely greasy. So much so that after biting into it I felt as though I had Chapstick on my lips. Plus it was only 1 half of a sandwich, I mean $7.70 for half a sandwich? Seriously? Well, A bag of kettle chips came with the sandwich so that was OK. I have yet to eat the cinnamon roll but I did eat the cinnamon twist. Unfortunately I had to heat it up in the microwave before I could eat it. When I ate it it was soft and hot due to my microwave, But because it was just Dough and cinnamon and a smidge of sugar, I failed to see what was so special about these baked goods from anyone else who does this. I've had better cinnamon twist from convenient store gas stations. Not that the cinnamon twist was bad it just was ordinary and certainly not worth what I paid for it. I don't really have a problem with this place although my review may seem like I did, but I really don't. I don't know if I'll be back I'm on the fence about that. What I will say is that it has potential to be a very good place but they are just missing the mark and honestly I don't know what they could do to actually hit it, although I do believe the price of what they charge for everything might help because the prices certainly do not match the quality of the food. New location alert. Stopped in at the new location today. Didn't ask but assumed they opened just today or yesterday as I'd driven by a few times. Things are a tad in disarray as might be expected, but the bread was hot and fresh as it always has been. Came away with a loaf of sourdough and a couple of cinnamon rolls, because, well, when the weather is this miserable, one must care for one's mental health. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. Lots of parking compared to the previous location, a bigger storefront and things are looking good so anticipating the next visit to see how they've progressed. The folks working here couldn't have been nicer on my visit. Highly recommended, and glad to see this location reclaimed from it's temporary life as an Asian grocer. Ok. 1st let me say 2 things *. We love the bread *. We know they are short staffed and appreciate those that do work there to help customers. Having said that today my wife suggested we go on a picnic to south park and get sandwiches from GH. she ordered egg salad w bread TOASTED. I ordered turkey baja TOASTED as it is on hot sandwich list as well. Set up blanket in south park and enjoying the day and opened up our sandwiches. Guess what? Neither toasted and in fact mine had so much stuff on it to one side when i took a bite the darn thing fell apart. It was soggy and disgusting. Cabbage should be reserved for something else, use lettuce like 99.9999% of the people do for sandwiches as chunks of cabbage does not make for a good sandwich. Next even stuff out on the sandwich rather than a pile on one side. For 10 buck sandwich you gotta get it right. We will be back for the bread but not lunch. read more

The staff at great harvest are so lovely! I ordered some treats to send as a gift and they took extra care to make a sweet gift basket and hand delivered it! We had a mix up where the recipient didn't get the basket because a neighbor had mistakenly taken it in, we ended up finding it and all was fine. But during the process, the staff were extremely helpful and apologetic despite it not being their faults and even offered to redeliver the order for free again. "Breaking Bad" has nothing on this place. Great Harvest Bread Company is a drug. I had heard about this place for years but steered clear of this business intentionally. I did not need one more temptation in my life. I was in downtown Lawrence and accidentally drove by Great Harvest Bread. Unfortunately there was a parking spot right in front of the store. I had no excuse. Reluctantly I parked my car and headed inside. I discovered what I had been so afraid of all these years- bread. Lots of luscious bread. I was inside a bread wonderland, surrounded by comforting, warm smells and I knew there was no escape. The store is not overstocked with products. It is actually a very sparse store, to be honest. There were a few racks of bread, a counter with a cash register and the ovens in full view behind the counter. There was a wide open space after you enter and you could go right toward the bread racks or left toward the counter. Do not let the sparseness fool you, though. This store is packed with bread goodness. There was row upon row on the bread racks of different types of bread. I cannot even remember a fraction of the bread goodness that was in this store. I honestly did not even know where to start. The lady behind the counter was very kind and I think she recognized my state of being overwhelmed. She asked me if she could help me and then she offered me free samples of the breads. She did not give me mere skinny slivers, either. She gave me a chunky full slice of bread. A very large piece of whatever type of bread I wanted to sample. I left with a fluffy, delicious, pillowy loaf of rye bread that tasted like no other bread I have ever tasted. It was the most enjoyment that has ever entered my mouth. I honestly could not believe that bread could taste so incredible. The ONLY negative to this store is the price. I know the rent is high downtown and you have to sell a great deal of bread to make the rent. But I thought paying $7.00 for a loaf of bread, however yummy, was a bit expensive. I am not sure, though, I will be back. I have no self control and this can be a very bad thing for me. One part of me was hoping I would really not like this store. The lure of Great Harvest Bread Co strikes again! I had previously thought that I kicked my addiction, but I couldn't resist after driving past this place day after day... It started with just wanting some hearty spinach feta bread. It progressed to stepping through the doors... my pupils dilated, I couldn't stop sniffing, I tried so many delicious samples, and caved and bought a massive loaf which I ate a hunk of on my way home. Anyone who says this is a great place is lying. If you love yourself, you would simply not eat here. There are so many bakeries in LFK that are 100x better than this place, unfortunately. I got the Turkey gobbler (what kind of name?) and it was mid. That name alone should've told me that it wasn't gonna be good. My friend got the breakfast sandwich and she hated it. she said it was worse than perkins and that's saying alot cos perkins is so horrible. also, there's no napkins and they don't even offer them. also pricey for the quality we got. Also, where is the good bread? y'all say it's so good but where? also, bad coffee choices. The staff is amazing and friendly. And very welcoming. The food is great and filling. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu in my opinion. Their other products are great as well I would highly recommend the blondie if they have them as well as their cinnamon roll. The loads of bread are great as well. Their coffee cakes or other specialty bread are great and I often grab a loaf to bring in to work or to bring home when I visit family. Great Harvest Bread Company is an extensive chain of bakeries that exist all over the country, so it's not unique to Lawrence but it's probably the best bakery in town. Nothing about being part of a chain means reduced quality; in fact, it's the opposite. This location maintains the high standards and quality that I've found at every other Great Harvest Bread Co. I've tried. The loaves of bread are soft, substantial, and delicious. The wheat rolls are fantastic. The cookies are big, soft, and tasty as well. The cinnamon burst loaf tastes amazing with some butter on it and makes your kitchen smell wonderful. I could go on about what is good here, but it becomes redundant -- everything here is worth trying at least once, and you'll want more after that. The prices aren't unreasonable for a bakery, and though you pay a little more for a loaf of bread, it's all absolutely worth it. You even get a small (or not so small) sample each time you go for free, so you'll always feel taken care of. There are a few bakeries in Lawrence, and they're all successful to different degrees and are good at different things, but Great Harvest Bread Co never fails to please and is my favorite destination for bread, rolls, and treats. When I romanticize living in Lawrence and how badly I look forward to someday moving back and settling down, this is one of the places I think about. I used to come here every Wednesday just to buy a loaf of Kansas Crunch bread (do they even still make it?) and my absolute favorite part was that they'd give you a free slice to jam on while you waited. My mouth is literally watering right now thinking about their warm bread with honey on it. As a college kid I was pretty broke most of the time (that's normal right?). Before I learned about how eating bread exclusively was probably not the best for your pancreas, I once went about a solid month eating nothing but Great Harvest bread. It's been about a decade ago so I doubt they remember me but in case you do, hey guys, i'm that guy, and I appreciate you fueling me through my sophomore year. They make really great homemade breads that taste like something you'd make at home, if you had the skills and expertise they have, obviously. I always preferred it to store-bought types for a number of reasons, but the heartiness of their bread was the number one reason. It's thick, it's dense in the best way possible, and it's so good I usually just eat it by itself so I can really take in all the flavors. Oh dear. I'm going to be that person who gives a 5-star business a lower review... Look, I'm not claiming that Great Harvest is bad by any means - 3 stars isn't bad, it's just average, which is exactly what I found this bakery to be. The bread here is not what I would call BREAD; it clearly hasn't gone through a pre-ferment process but it hardly tastes fermented at all. What this means in terms of taste is a bland, too-soft, starchy loaf that lacks depth and is reliant solely on toppings and mix-ins for flavor. This is why I can't consider it BREAD - I could never eat this stuff alone with a spread of butter. The potato chive loaf I got was fine with my kale soup. I can see myself using the cinnamon raisin in French toast. The wheat looks like it'd make a good PB&J. At $8 for a full loaf, though, I don't want bread that serves as a cursory side to my dinner. I want a crusty artisan loaf of BREAD, crackly and aromatic and complex; I want it to shine on its own. I realize that I may be unusual in that I could actually probably live on BREAD and water. Nonetheless, even for those who are less enthusiastic I think you should have an idea of what you're getting into before you come to Great Harvest: expect overpriced, mediocre bread served in a cute and cozy shop. I had seen Great Harvest while driving up Vermont, but being a regular at Wheatfield's (less than two blocks away), I had not bothered to stop in. My wife and I had to park across the street from Great Harvest during a recent visit to Massachusetts Street for some shopping, so we decided to go in. As we entered, the aroma of freshly baked bread and pies consumed me as the baker and ovens are directly behind the counter and he was removing piping-hot pie from the oven. Flavors vary by season. Unlike Wheatfield's, bread is self-service in plastic wrap on shelving next to the counter. There were samples of five different breads and a bowl full of butter next to the register and when I inquired about the offerings, the young lady sliced a piece of multigrain bread as wide and thick as the palm of my hand. The bread was moist and crunchy with chunks of wholegrain throughout, the crust being a bit too soft for my taste, but delicious nonetheless. At nearly $6 a loaf, the bread is more than I have ever paid for a loaf and $1-$2 more than their competitor down the street. The pies were gorgeous, a plump golden brown, but at $16 a pop, a bit pricey for my taste. Their products are obviously high in quality and flavor, so the only thing limiting my rating to four stars and not five was the prices. First of all, they have out fresh baked bread and real softened butter for samples when you walk in. So, what's not to love already? But, this is how you become the office hero. You come in with a couple of loaves of the sweeter breads. They will slice it, or advice if you shouldn't slice it ahead of time, at the store. They often make the loaves in roll form, so that may be another way to go (especially, if you're taking it in to the office.) The menu changes, so you're not guaranteed to go in and get your absolute favorite loaf every single time you walk in. And purchases obscene amounts of it and stockpiles it in her freezer. I think she is their biggest fan. Now, I can't deny the bread is outstanding, but the prices leave me a little cold. I really love this bakery and the selections that they offer. Every year we get our fresh pies here for the holidays. They have some of the best fresh bread options in the area. Bought a cinnamon roll and then received a generous sample of the Half&Half bread, which we ate as we left. It was so delicious that we went back later that night to buy a loaf. We went back numerous days in a row to get cinnamon rolls and each time sampled a different product. The garlic and cheddar bread is a delicious savory bread and the chocolate chip bread is really tasty as well. Love this new discovery! read more

I love soft bread. That's what you'll find here. If you prefer a more crusty, European-style loaf (which I do on occasion), head down the street to Wheatfields. This stuff is comfort food, and I am addicted to the cheddar garlic and cinnamon chip loaves. I live alone, so I buy the smaller ones. If they run out, they will half a regular-sized loaf for you. In my opinion, the smaller ones taste better. They always have free samples, and these aren't your typical samples. A whole roll or a slice the size of your face...that's what I'm talkin about. Absolutely five stars. Their breads are always fresh and the best to be found as well as addictive. They have samples so you know just what you are getting and the smell alone when you walk in is worth the trip downtown.
