I ordered 18 cookies yesterday to be delivered to my freshman son for his birthday on the 29th. They were supposed to have been delivered at 8:00pm. I ordered them at 8:56am. At 10:16am the next day (today) I received a text from them stating that they were cancelling my order. No reason, no apology, nothing... I called and the spoke with the store owner, who also offered no apology and said it wasn't his fault "they had to close early." I asked how I would be accommodated - would they send the cookies today, give a discount for next time, etc. NOTHING. He never once apologized, offered anything (even like a free cookie!). I hadn't been to this cookie place in a minute because i had been baking my own!! I decided to go, about 2 weeks ago, and get 3 cookies; cookies and cream and m&ms w/ chocolate chips. The cookies were good, but the worker was the issue. when I walked in the lady had on gloves. so, I ordered and she took my credit card for payment. she tapped whatever on the screen with glove that she had on when I entered and the same glove that she took my credit card and ran for payment. then she took that same hand with that same glove that had done all them previous action with and (who knows what before) she took my cookies out of the cookie rack and put them in a cookie sleeve for me to eat; hmmm. so, I asked the lady, "you are really gonna give me some cookies that you took out the rack with the same glove that you have handled the register, credit card, and whatever else with?" she replied, " what, you want me to put on a new glove?" I replied, "yes, I expect that." She gave me a long sigh and rolled her eyes while she put on a fresh new glove and gave me 3 new cookies out of the rack. I began to think about all the violations that she could have possibly committed before I went into the cookie shop and what I could have ingested that day because of her negligence and utter disregard for safety and food handling. And I will not be back to the Hot Box. It doesn't take much to cause me to be disgusted with your service. If credit card is required because of the concern to Covid-19 and possible germ transmission, then why wouldn't it be stressed to follow protocol concerning food handling. It's located in an interesting place - the underside of a hotel. You do NOT have to go into the hotel to get to this shop; it has its own entrance. Parking is nearby and is metered. I really like the hours and that you can get delivery. There is a decent selection of cookies. I ended up getting two chocolate chip cookies with the Madagascar Vanilla ice cream in the middle. I thought the flavors were good but the ice cream was pretty solid so it was hard to eat. Also wasn't much of a sandwich since I had to eat out of the bowl. My boyfriend asked the guy for a cookie that came literally out of the oven and the guy obliged him which was really nice. The cookies are much better fresh from the oven. If you get them at the right time, and they're hot, they're ok...but not as good as Insomnia, which unfortunately, isn't in Lawrence. This specific review is just about their delivery service. We had planned to surprise our daughter and her KU suitemates with a dozen hot cookies on Monday night following the first day of school. As a side note, going back to kindergarten, my wife always made cookies for my daughters to come home to and enjoy after the first day of school, so this was going to be our way of continuing the tradition. We completed the order online the day before and had a receipt showing delivery should take place at 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Instructions were clear....they were supposed to call my daughter when they were at the dorm so she could go down and get them. A little after 8:30, we talked to our daughter, and it was clear she didn't know anything about a surprise, and they certainly weren't munching down on cookies. A little before 9:00, still nothing. I called Hot Box and talked to a woman who looked up the order. She told me they're not allowed to deliver to the dorms or fraternity/sorority houses without having confirmation in advance that someone would be there. She said they called my daughter earlier in the day to confirm she'd be in her room at 8:30, and they were waiting for a callback. My daughter told us later she did see a random number pop up on her phone she didn't recognize, but they didn't leave a message. I confirmed with the woman that my daughter was in her room, and that they should call her to arrange delivery immediately, which they did. My daughter said the woman told her delivery would be in 30-45 minutes. It was closer to 50 minutes before the cookies arrived, and they were barely warm. So in the end, the surprise was ruined, and the cookies that were supposed to show up at 8:30 ended up showing up closer to 10:00 (and that was only after we intervened...if we hadn't, I'm guessing the delivery wouldn't have happened because they would've claimed they were waiting for a callback from a message that wasn't left). Nothing about this experience would make me order cookies for delivery again, certainly not in a scenario where we were trying for a surprise. read more

This has been apart of my regular stop in Lawrence since they opened because the cookies are amazing and it's my weakness. With that being said, I can't overlook the poor execution of customer service they offer. Over Thanksgiving I stopped in and ordered a dozen cookies that they had in their display case. They were light on the cookie selection and making more cookies in the back. The guy working asked us to call ahead next time so we don't wipe them out. I apologized and said, "I'm not from here so I didn't realize." He immediately back tracked and said, "Don't worry about calling ahead if you don't live here." Last night I was in town for the game and stopped by on my way out of town. We walked in 15 minutes to close and they had at least a dozen of cookies in each flavor, 15 minutes to close. I didn't see any rush of people coming in and there's tons of cookies left. We ordered two of each cookie and the guy was instantly annoyed. He snaps, "Next time, call ahead." I say, "We are not from here." He starts to argue with us and is extremely confrontational. Here we were, happy as can be that the Jayhawks won and there were tons of cookies left with closing time within minutes away. He rudely says, "$30" - we hand him our card and he slams down our receipts and walks away. What the Hell just happened? This place has 10 sets of cookies with a dozen left of each, 15 minutes before close and you're going to tell me that I need to call ahead? You're going to be rude to a customer that specifically stops in EVERY time I'm in Lawrence? I asked for the manager and of course he was the manager on duty. He snapped that he was busy with to go orders. This guy is a manager for heavens sake, customer service and multi tasking should be skill sets that he has mastered. Apparently not. Hot Box Cookies = late night joint (ha, ha...) for stoners with munchies - hey, someone's got to fill the niche! I admit I may be biased because I am avid home baker - I know it takes a really good cookie to impress me. But I think most would agree that this place has really mediocre flavors despite what they'd like you to believe (really guys, putting Oreos in cookies is not a novel concept). Plus, they're overpriced - $1.25 for a small to medium sized cookie. They also offer cookie sandwiches ($3.25) with your choice of icing or ice cream stuffed in between. These sandwiches are painstakingly made - I don't think I've ever seen anyone struggle that much with a piping bag of icing...paired with the hand-drawn art adorning the walls, it was a pretty comical experience. Mr. P and I stopped in on a cold, rainy night. Bright and inviting from the outside, but a little oddly decorated on the inside. We ordered a red velvet cookie, a monster cookie, and an ice cream sandwich with snickerdoodle and M&M cookies. The red velvet cookie, still warm from the oven, was decadent. The monster cookie was delightful and reminded me of sitting at my mother's table sneaking cookies as soon as she made them. The ice cream sandwich, Mr. P's preference, was made to order so the cookies were not frozen and hard to naw through...a pet peeve of some people. Individually the cookies held their own, but together with ice cream, they were sinful. I recommend they add some hot beverages to the line up before winter sets in. They don't have to get fancy, but decent coffee or good hot chocolate would go along way with me. An on demand Kuerig might be a good start. Second, I know they have a delivery service, but don't neglect the store experience. Figure out how to engineer the traffic flow better to highlight profit leaders and how to better mask the old ice cream wells. Also, creating a space for people to comfortably lounge in will help increase sales. My final recommendation is to offer a combo with two cookies and a milk/coffee for a slight discount. They'll sell more milk/coffee (a profit maker) and they'll entice customers to increase their purchase amount. Overall, I would stop in again to see what's fresh out of the oven. Hot, fresh cookies...mmm, I'm drooling just thinking about it. read more

Original: I've been to the HotBox in Columbia and love the concept- cookies at a moments notice and a store with nothing but cookies and milk. I've been to the Lawrence location and it is just like the one in Columbia- the walls are decorated with hand drawings on boxes. There aren't many places to sit and enjoy your cookies and milk while walking Mass however. We had the cookies delivered to work once and they arrived on time and warm. I like softer cookies so theirs are good. However, their cookies are $1.25 each and I can get some really good cookies at the HyVee for $3.99 a dozen or 3 for $99 at the HyVee gas. Update: I really like coming here sometimes. They've cleaned up and the walls look better. They've also added a lot more places to sit. Now they keep the cookies in a warming box and so you aren't eating the non warm display cookies which is an excellent addition. I upgrade them by a star for these improvements. read more

I tried Hot Box's cookie delivery tonight after hearing about their Mass. Street store, and it's pretty much as dreamy as the concept suggests. I ordered over the phone with a friendly employee, met the $12 minimum, and about an hour later had the delivery at my door. The cookies, to Hot Box's credit, were gooey and soft. As an East Coast transplant who's not very suited to Kansas, I can definitely say that Hot Box's delivery is a magic native to Lawrence. read more
