Needed a sugar fix after dinner so i stopped in since i was staying at the hotel nearby. Was hoping to get a certain cupcake that the Joplin store use to make but they did not have it. I still recommend the owner looks into the Fat Elvis! It was the best. Since they didn't have what i wanted the peanut butter cup was recommended. Small cakes went above and beyond for me. Due to a misunderstanding on my part, I showed up needing gluten-free cupcakes and they had none. They stopped what they were doing and made me some right away that were ready for pick up in an hour and a half! They could not have been more gracious and helpful, and I might add that the cupcakes they made were absolutely delicious, and beautifully decorated. Five stars for sure! Stopped off to get a cupcake treat for a friend. Wow! So many cute cupcakes to choose from. The sales attendant was very sweet and helpful. She talked us through the selections available. She also steered us in the right direction. She made some very good recommendations and stayed within the price points. They had lemon cupcakes, birthday sprinkles, tons of chocolate and many other delicious and pretty selections. It was so difficult to choose. They also had cupcakes in a cup! There was a sale and I almost came out with 6 cupcakes instead of one. Lol. This store was easy access, too. I had almost given up. For years I have traveled to different stores, bakeries and eateries seeking the perfect cupcake. And throughout my travels I came across some that were OK, some that were "meh" but never finding one that excited my palate and had my mouth watering for more. Until I came across a little place called small cakes. I had drove by this place many times before and I always told myself I was going to go in and check them out but due to countless disappointments with other bakeries in the past I always came up with a reason not to go in. But as I sat and looked at the store front after just leaving Petsmart to pick something up for my kitty cat I decided I was going to pick up a little something for me. So I went in First of all the location of this place is really a hidden gem. It is snuggled in a store front and actually has direct competition with a donut shop to the left of it and it has a hair shop and a phone store to the right of it so it's kinda oddly stuck in this area and because you have to turn off of a main road to get up into it, it's very easy to drive by and not see it. But I'm a quirky kind of girl so I usually catch the stuff that most people would ignore. First of all you walk in and I love The layout. All of the cupcakes are upfront, very visual and they all sit in glass toppers so that you can clearly see what is available. The menu smacks you in the face the minute you walk in. it sits up high, the words are big and colorful so that you know exactly what they have and what it cost. What I love most is they don't have 25 different flavors and 25 different sizes of cupcakes. I love the simplicity of having a few flavors, having two sizes of cupcakes real small minis and then the regular gourmet size. This makes it easy for you to choose what you're going to get and what flavor you have to choose from instead of looking through an array of different types trying to figure out if it's worth your time. I'm also the type that I don't like real wild flavors when it comes to cupcakes. I like traditional flavors with a little kick and that is exactly what I got with these. I purchased the strawberry chocolate cream, the vanilla caramel crunch, and the cookie and cream. I have not tasted the vanilla caramel crunch in the cooking cream simply because of the size of these cupcakes they're gourmet size so you have to take your time and eat them. But I did eat the strawberry chocolate cream and it was divinely delicious! Hoodoggie good!!! As I took bite after bite the love affair between me and small cakes became more intimate because the cupcake was fluffy, the icing was flavorful and not overly sweet. it was decorated beautifully and the taste was wonderful. I'm so in love with small cakes right now that I will have to take our relationship to the next level here pretty soon. I may have to hire them to cater an event that I may be having around Christmas and considering how well we've hit it off there may be a match made in heaven coming very very soon. I've said it over and over again that some of the best food is made in some of the smallest, most unchartered, undiscovered places and even though this place does have a Food Network sign on the door, it is one of those places that you stumble across ...but once you stumble you're down for the count and you might as well just surrender because the small cake won the big bake!!!!! read more

I lived through the cupcake craze of the 00s and ate through plenty when I lived in the big city, and these are up to snuff with the big league players out there. I like the wedding cake, lemon... and I love the vanilla one with the chocolate ganache-type frosting (it's a special they say). Red velvet is divine. The cake part is wonderful. Sometimes the frosting gets too sweet for me (cookies and cream, for example) but some folks might prefer that level, and that's just fine. I just scrape off 30% of the frosting and feed it to my kiddies (who only eat the frosting anyway... just, why? that's a whole 'nother convo) and it works for me. Everyone has their frosting-to-cake-ratio and I'm more of a cake person anyway. They are literally small cakes -- bigger than cupcakes! So, yeah, if you're a cake person, yes. You'll be happy.
