We dined at Pueblo Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is clean and well lit. The menu offers a nice variety. I had the chicken fajita salad. Oh my, it was flavorful and filling. My husband had a burrito which was good. We had the seafood quesadilla. It was good, but it wasn't cut. Easy fix, we used our knife to cut the quesadilla. The service was attentive. Coming here I realized that this is a college town so I didn't expect a lot. We ordered a lime margarita and when we asked what tequila was used in the drink we were told Jose Cuervo. They had Hornitos so we requested that to be used in the drink instead. The server returned with drinks that were orange. When I questioned him about the color he stated they used Don Julio which is why it was orange. huh? The food at best was mediocre. Our entrees were Fish Tacos for me and Chili Colorado for the hubby. They used Tilapia fish in the tacos. Not a great choice. Please note, I spent most of my adult life in San Francisco and know what good Mexican food is. My hubby has 30+ tequilas so he knows his tequilas and Don Julio was not used in our cocktails. Okay, sorry to bust the party, but this place just isn't good ‍ First I should note our gas was 100% siphoned in the parking lot. I was totally shocked lol because that's never happened to me before. We had half a tank when we arrived (around 156 miles for our car) and when we came out it said 49 and the gas light was on. WHAT?!? This isn't necessarily their fault (not taken into account for the review) but it's totally weird. It alone would keep us from coming back just because WOW. I have yet to feel worried about the security of my car in Lawrence; this was the first time. FOOD We are from Phoenix so I guess we just have high standards but y'all DO NOT have to settle for this level of quality. It's just so bad. I got the chimichanga (which is what I always order first at a new Mexican joint). The cheese sauce was weird. It was like it was a glazed donut but the sauce wasn't BAD, just not what I expected. Also, the burrito was TINY. Y'all: chimichangas should be huge. Think chipotle burrito that's fried. This? It was the size of a taco!!! What a rip off! It was smaller than my hand by a wide margin. The beef was dry and flavorless, the texture was way off. The entire interior of the chimichanga was gross but the tortilla was well done. The rice had peas in it? What the heck is going on there? I will say the beans were good and the cheese on top of it was nice. My husband got the veggie quesadilla. He was really underwhelmed. It was largely flavorless. Don't just have veggie options to have them-- make them good. Everything is wildly overpriced-- you are not getting enough food (let alone quality food) to justify these prices. SERVICE I was in a big group so I won't rate wait times etc etc because that's just not fair. I will say I never had a drink refill during the hour I was there but that's not even really taken into account. My waiter rolled his eyes at me when I didn't understand his question (he had repeated it twice by only saying 'Menu?'). I wasn't sure if he was asking "do you need a menu?" Or "have you gotten a menu?". I assumed the first but then he started taking our order. I said, "oh, no, I'm sorry. We haven't gotten a menu yet" and he rolled his eyes and said "that's why I said: menu?". I just apologized. Everyone was very short and stern, not one person smiled at me the entire time I was there. There is absolutely no reason to come here-- bad service and bad food. I went here with family while visiting my old stomping grounds of Lawrence, KS. I was told that this was their favorite Mexican place. After moving to the Southwest I have a very VERY different idea of what constitutes as good food and this place doesn't fit the bill. This is very homogeneous, Tex-Mex food that does little to inspire the taste buds. The menus are picture menus of the food, which is typically a sign that their offerings are as plastic as they appear in a laminated and food-stained menu. I would not come here again when visiting Lawrence as the city has some amazing food offerings. read more

There are restaurants you walk into and it's clear the owners know what they're doing and are serious about service. You get that in about 10 seconds here. Menus come out, chips are on the table and water in less than a minute. Order is taken in probably under 3 minutes. They're polite but ready to pounce, and away we went. First up, your requisite chips and sauce. The sauce definitely house crafted and brimming with cilantro, not much kick but a lot of serious flavor, a savory sweetness that complimented the chips nicely. Four enchilada platter for my friend, carne asada taco platter for myself. Tacos were simply meat and tortilla shells. The meat was flavorful and tender. A nice side of pico de gallo was available for the tacos and what I'd call a chipotle adobo sauce. All to my liking but no lime wedges. Should have asked. This was a huge lunch. Tacos came with a large side of refried beans that we ended up turning into dip for some of the chips. It was soft and flavorful with just a hint of melted cheese. I'd call this somewhat Americanized Mexican fare. Nothing wrong with that. It was a lot of food for the price, service was on the spot, and we clearly got a bit beyond our fill. The hustle of this place is unmistakable. It's not large and at one time I observed no less than five employees covering tables, filling water glasses, clearing plates and caring for customers. If you're on the clock for lunch, they can get you in and out in a hurry based on what I observed. Serious restaurant with solid food. This restaurant on Iowa near 6th Street has a menu that is a clone of the usual Tex-Mex menus common at most of Lawrence's Mexican restaurants. What really stands out here is the service. When we were there, the service was really outstanding. But as with the other "cloned" Mexican menus in Lawrence, Pueblo's doesn't even have black beans, only refried beans, and of course they do not have brown rice. This kind of border-Mex menu is a throwback to those of the earliest Mexican restaurants to appear in the US Southwest many decades ago. Of course Mexican food in the interior of Mexico (far south of the border) is much more diverse than border-Mex. But if you like Tex-Mex, you will probably like Pueblo, and its service is unbeatable. read more

So when I read the yelp* reviews for the new restaurant, I was a bit surprised that they were so good. In fact, a fellow Elite '14 member had high praise for their food, service, and margaritas, so I had to give them a try. Our experience was very average, even disappointing. Based on the menu, it looks like El Mezcal simply changed the name to Pueblo, hoping to get more business, but they should have copied the 23rd Street location's recipes because the food is not nearly as good. As mentioned in previous reviews, I am a bit of a Mexican food snob, having grown up in LA where Mexican restaurants far outnumber McDonalds and Taco Bell combined. As usual, I stick with the basics the first time I visit a restaurant to see if they can get them right before moving on to more complex fare. We ordered the small guacamole ($3.49) and the highly touted white cheese dip (queso blanco - small - $3.49). The guacamole was small and too dark ( not enough lime/lemon and/or too old) made with avocado and SMALL PIECES OF TOMATO (which should never be in guacamole in the first place). The queso blanco was warm and well seasoned, but way too watery, barely adhering to the store-bought chips, another tremendous disappointment. I had the 27 ounce margarita (on the rocks - $4.99) which was decent, strong, and very reasonably priced, and my wife had the horchata, a Mexican rice-base drink which was much better than El Mezcal's watery version. My wife ordered the vegetarian special #1, a cheese quesadilla and cheese and onion enchilada (with queso blanco instead of red sauce - she hates tomatoes - $7.49), coming with refried beans. It is difficult to screw-up a quesadilla and Pueblo was no exception. The enchilada was good, but the beans rather bland, missing that fatty taste traditional refried beans emanate hence the name "refried". I decided to forego the rice and beans and get down to brass tacks, ordering the steak tacos ($2.40 each) and beef enchiladas ($5.49) ala carte. The tacos came in flour tortillas and the steak, not plentiful, was well seasoned with a little lettuce and plenty of white cheese. I saved some of the guacamole for my tacos, ordered some pico de gallo ($.99), and added their salsa, which was pretty good, making up for the lack of tomatoes. Disappointing. The beef enchiladas were OK, but the sauce was watery and lacking flavor and a bit too sweet for my taste. I recommend that they flash-fry the tortillas before filling them, adding the sauce and some white cheese on top before putting them under the broiler to melt. Pueblo was no surprise after the ho-hum experience we had at this Iowa Street location when it was called El Mezcal. The decor is colorful and reminiscent of old Mexico and the service attentive, friendly, and fast. Not my favorite Mexican restaurant in Lawrence by any stretch and we will probably not return. Just save yourself the trouble and go to Salty Iguana. Cheese sauce is runny. My burrito was the size of an enchilada (I was expecting bigger for $5). They charge you for every little thing - the cheese sauce on top of your burrito, lettuce and tomato on the side of burrito - and not just a few cents extra. It's just not good. We literally went to Salty Iguana afterward to get cheese dip and make up for the experience. read more

The beef enchilada was literally, plain ground beef wrapped in a plain corn tortilla with a sauce more closely resembling cheap marinara sauce, not ranchero sauce. The cheese enchilada was jack cheese in a plain corn tortilla with more cheese on top and white sauce that had zero flavor. No spice, no character, no flavor - period. So disappointing. Any self respecting Mexican cook wouldn't have fed this to their dog. Lastly, of course I ordered a margarita. It was a fish bowl size glass full of cheap mixer and zero discernible tequila. Again, falls into the category of worst ever. And for the happy privilege of enduring this food disaster, I paid $40+tip (the service was great). Which was for both my daughter and I who ordered the same meal. Seriously folks, save your money and go to Chipotle. Or better yet, find a Mexican restaurant that's actually trying to produce something great. You couldn't do worse than this without contracting a foodborne illness (and the jury's still out on that one). read more

Entrance is from 2 separate doors on each side. I entered thru a small door. To get to the small seating area, have to go thru a small maze. Seated immediately by the manager. There may be a basement area as well it seemed, which was closed. Rest room is too small, hard to move around for big boys. Customer seating area tables and floor appear clean. Interior was decorated in mexican style. Lot of customers were coming and going, meaning the place is making good money. My order chilaquiles mexicanos was taken in about less than 5 minutes. First, chips basket with sauce was brought. I also asked for hottest sauce, brought immediately, was very good. My order was brought in 10 minutes, piping hot. The service is good and prompt. The employees appear to be of mexican descent, at times might have some difficulty communicating in english. Overall, there was no problem in getting things delivered. The food order included refried beans, mexican rice, shredded chicken and two omlettes on top in addition to chips and great sauce. The food was very good and i was full. The dish cost $9.83 inc tax. Was passing through Kansas and had to stop for the night. This little gem was a mile down the street from the hotel. It's a small, cozy little restaurant; very homey feeling and comforting. First impression of how good a Mexican restaurant is going to be are their chips and salsa. Impressed right from the start! Their chips were fried to a warm, think crisp, lightly salted. The salsa had a different taste than I've before, the cilantro was very prominent; I loved it! Ordered enchiladas supremas - consisted of one chicken, one beef, one bean, and one cheese enchilada coated with a dark red, roasted flavor enchilada sauce, shredded lettuce, and think, creamy sour creme. Had a side of guac with my entree, which was deliciously seasoned and puréed, which I liked a lot. This was honestly some of the best Mexican food I've tasted, which says a lot being from Arizona!
