Came here for a team happy hour, and we had plenty of room in back. The bar in back was not open, so we had to hit the bar in front for self service. I love this bar in Lawrence! The manager Kars makes you feel like you're in her home. She takes very good care of her guests. I've been there twice in the last few weeks because the bottle cocktails are so delicious! We were nice and toasty on the back patio. It's very spacious and safe for these times. A dive of the very best kind with one of the best outdoor music venues in the city, ripe with all kinds of music. Yea, it's a booze slinging, dumpy kind of place but one which is most inviting and friendly. And don't be coming here giving it 5-stars on Yelp. The customers here want nothing of the sort, so don't ruin it! They like it just the way it is with its faults and quirky interior. Cozy interior and sprawling back patio (HEATED!), $2 wells on Mondays, plus hello, the LIVE shows featuring kick a$$ bands like Lawrence's own Spook Lights, not to mention touring acts who are up and coming. The cover is ridiculously low. OK, so if this place were in NYC, it would be... OH HELL NO. You know what? This place couldn't exist in NYC! This is the kind of place that makes it okay to leave my beloved home because it illuminates all that is sucky with drinking and nightlife in the big city. It's one of the blessed perks of living in a small town. There, I said it. Oh, that said, I'd avoid it Thursday-Saturday nights in warm weather when it is packed with the young'uns. The Replay Lounge is a Lawrence institution -- in an age when arcades have nearly completely disappeared and where live music is a rarity for most bars, the Replay Lounge has both. As the name would obliquely indicate, the Replay Lounge has pinball machines. Though the number of machines has dwindled to four in the current set-up, these are modern pins with with digital readouts and current themes. Though I've never been involved with any of their tournaments, two are of them are labeled as "Tournament Play", so I presume there is some sort of league that goes along with these. As for the most of the bar itself, it is a very eclectic mix of decor and clientele. Some people might view the Replay as a dive, with the dark colors, exceptional amounts of small-scale graffiti, band stickers, et c. but it's really an exceptional bar and venue. The Replay features live music several evenings a week, both in their indoor space and outdoor beer-garden area. The indoor stage is small, with enough space for three-and-four piece bands to set up. Wide varieties of bands on their way up have come through the Replay for shows -- the Donnas, the Ettes, Wesley Willis, and multitudes of other rock acts. The back patio space is an open-air beergarden-type area where acoustic acts and DJs play. Since the Lawrence smoking ban, this is one of the few places that bar patrons can smoke while still within a bar with a drink. Tables and outdoor seating make this a pleasant place to spend an afternoon with a beer or a nice evening. Depending on the music situation, this is either ideal for hanging out and conversation, or a great space for hanging out and dancing. Though Replay has a full bar, their stock-and-trade is in beer, with lots of canned Pabst Blue Ribbon sold and consumed -- to the extent that the Replay has specific recycling bins in the back patio area for cans. In fact, you can get PBR at least five different ways at the Replay -- 12 oz can, 16 oz can, 12 oz bottle, 12 oz PBR Light, and draft. read more

Let me tell you a little secret. Some of my NYC friends think that they are totes in the know and amazing when they get to see some "secret" show for under $20 in a room with less than 100 people. In Lawrence, though, you can do that almost every day at the Replay Lounge. In fact, almost all the shows are only two dollars. Two. Dollars. And cans of beer are less than that, as are some of the nightly drink specials. Inside, you'll find pinball galore (free on Fridays from 3-6!), a great L-shaped bar, a few booths which are good backup if your feet are busted from dancing so hard to the rockin' bands--who perform, by the way, on a stage that is less than 2 feet tall, which makes you feel like you are IN the show. The outdoor seating area has twinkly lights and tons o' booths, another bar, and this unquantifiable but definite ambience that makes me unfailingly happy. Loved the patio! The DJ wasn't really my thing, but I was there to see the live music and that was great. It's a small place (inside), cash bar. Boasts large selection of Pinball. I only saw a few machines, but didn't venture around the corner of the bar, maybe more were hiding. Friendly staff and comfy for a dive bar. I will go back for the HUGE patio with tons of seating. Def not an arcade and a bit disappointing. It may have been at one point in time but the machines are not a priority. Don't get me wrong, the machines are well-maintained but my partner and I went to play during "free play" and we were charged a $5 cover and the machines were not free. A band was setting up on the stage right beside the pinball machines and I'm pretty sure I lost some hearing, it was ridiculously loud for such a small space. We played for maybe 10 minutes and then were asked by the bartender to wait to play until the musicians were done with their set. Why have the machines on if you don't want people to play? Also, the machines are right in front of the bathroom and very inconvenient for those trying to get through. We love pinball and a cool divey bar but we won't be back to replay. Very surprising that Lawrence doesn't have a bar-cade. read more

"High Life, in a bottle" To me, this phrase sums up The Replay Lounge. Every show I've been to there had it uttered at least once in the evening, either after a few strong, neat liquors, or just to take the sweat off my brow on one of the sweltering summer shows. Always crisp and cold from the sticker-covered cooler, always handed over with a comfortable gesture, as if it'd been being done for years, no matter who did the handing. I've seen some of my favorite acts in this bar, either on their way through town or just another night as a local staple. The place, any time of day or night, feels like a kids' clubhouse...with alcohol. It's never had a bad vibe that I've ever felt, even in those first days of being back in town, showing up on my own without knowing anyone, and asking for that Miller... I had my birthday there, on the back patio in one of the wooden corner-booths, a hot early-summer evening with great friends. I've shown out-of-town guests a good time there, and I've watched the goings on of Mass St transpire out the big, tinted windows as I sat at the bar on my own. And don't forget the pinball...oh and bathrooms that pretty much are the epitome of rock-n-roll dive-bar disgusting, complete with drunken scrawls over shitty band-flyers and no surface you'd want to touch...but that's how you know this place is real. All this waxing poetic would normally compel me to accessorize the review with a 5 star rating....except for one, tiny thing: No snacks. Even simple bags of chips would suffice, I don't ask for much. It's a bar, after all, but just like I expect my Barber Shops to have combs soaking in blue fluids, I want my bars to have at least something I can snack on. The first thing that drew my group to this place was the music. I'd heard from other friends that it was "...different," but it sounded like it was poppin'-- I was surprised to hear hip-hop bass thumping on the patio, like what I would hear coming out of Tonic. We paid a cover of a grand $2 (btw: bar is cash only). The bouncer overheard my friend ask, "what do you want to drink?" He says, "is it your first time at Replay? Everyone drinks PBR." Hooray for hipster beer of choice! But wait... indie rock hipsters and mainstream (GASP) hip-hop/pop mix? Here, they do. Men in plaid or tank tops with varied but large amounts of facial hair enjoy 90s mainstream hits here, from artists like Boyz II Men to Mariah Carey. At the end of the night, my friends and I decided we're pretty sure this is where indie-music rockers can go to be traitors to their kind, for a night, though I guess if it's 90s mainstream it's not currently mainstream. And therefore okay for hipsters to listen to? You tell me-- the hipster crowd around here is pretentious enough for the situation to be a legitimate talking point. If you are new to or visiting Lawrence this is the one place you absolutely have to go to. The back patio is big, hip, has a full bar and stage. During the week there are always places to sit. When the weather is nice you can almost guarantee to hear a good DJ out there. On late Sunday afternoons they usually have bands...bluegrass typically. Inside is small, but has a great bar. This is a place where you could see one of the most amazing concerts of your life, not necessarily knowing who you are seeing. The $2-3 cover charge is always great too. Some bands get big after playing here. Trail of Dead, decemberists, etc. I remember seeing the Decemberists and there only being about five people in the audience. A year later they were one of the most famous indie bands. I will never understand why people bitch about a $2 cover charge. Seriously folks...pay the bands and DJ's. All walks of life frequent the replay. everyone getting along in one place. The doorguys and bartenders are seriously some of the hippest people you could ever meet. The patio is amazing, with a full bar, so you do not even have to go inside and miss a minute of the beautiful Kansas weather (note, if it actually beautiful weather, you don't want to miss it, as we don't have much of it around here). Canned beer and good music, you can get much better than this, and definitely not for the price. Bring cash, as they won't let you run a tab (probably afraid you will make a trip to the less-than-stellar restrooms and not make it back). So hit the ATM, grab a coozie, and slide into a booth for a great time (booths are wood, so to avoid splinters, slide gingerly). read more

Go here. This place rules. They used to have Simpson's veiwing parties when the Simpson's were still funny. PBR, High Life, dirty, beautiful. There are bars known for darts (Chez Charlies), bars known for pool (Welcome to the Johnsons), this place is known for pin ball. And boom goes the dinamite. It is good that I live in Waldo, not Lawrence, because I would shut this place down nightly. The jukebox is good, the prices are fair, and the ambiance is second to none. This is the only local place I know of that Neil Hamburger deemed worthy of his presence. (I'm gonna play bass licks on your grave!!!) Maybe my lack of experiences here have left me naive as to the annoying hipster factor that may very well lurk very near the surfface here, but I don't care. If I'm wrong, then I don't wanna be right. My wife spent many a night here when she and her friends were not holding shows at their house (Swiss Cheese House). This should be your first destination place to get a crazy night on Mass St started, then end it here. read more

Maybe I'm biased, I don't care. I love the Replay! Yes, it's a townie bar. We like it that way. Most nights there is a DJ on the patio, and a band inside offering completely antithetical styles of music. If you don't like what's going on outside, go inside and vice-versa. Bartenders are too busy to be friendly, but that's ok. Service is usually pretty quick. Drink specials are average - $5 doubles and the like. My home away from for nearly a decade. Every time I have visit Lawrence, I always drop my luggage off and go straight to the Replay just minutes after arriving from the airport. Very inexpensive drinks, kick ass staff, excellent jukebox and interesting hit-or-miss live music. This place is a requisite if you are and indie band on tour. There are several that stopped in for a set before making it big time. When I moved out of Lawrence I left behind many friends, ex-girlfriends, and fond memories all because of the Replay Lounge. read more

The Patio of the replay makes me extremely happy. I like that they have a grill back there, so that when I drink too many dornos (I have no idea how you really spell that, but it's a yard beer on ice with a lime. Delicious.) I can eat something. They have a veggie burger, which is awesome. That griller guy should invest in veggie dogs, too, so that I can switch it up. He should also have some additional side items, perhaps bagged chips? That would be awesome. Oh, yeah, the bar. It's pretty great. Live music all the time, although inflation has struck the replay and it is now 3 dollars to see a show. How sad. The Replay gets 4 stars instead of 5 because of the bathroom. It is awful. I would rather pee in the alley. read more

After moving away from Lawrence for the big city, I thought coming back to the Replay would make me feel old and uncool. Although I am still really cool, I am a bit older. The Replay is a great mix of all ages 21 and up, so I felt right at home. I love that there are two parties going on and both with bars. The outside patio area is decked out with plenty of dancin space and seating. The inside is really more standing room for head bangin and free fallin. If you are in Kansas....drive to Lawrence and go to this place. Seriously! We went two nights in a row, and both nights were equally fun. Good variety of DJ'd tunes on the outside porch area, some decent rock bands inside, some of the cheapest booze I have seen in a LONG time, very friendly and helpful staff (make sure to tip 'em well!), and the piece de' resistance - some of the hottest midwestern women I have ever seen, all crammed into one space. Patronage seem to be very friendly on the whole, and if you're looking for a no-nonsense, fun time in Kansas - this is the spot! Oh yea, and for those of you like myself that kinda hate humidity (hey, I live in SF where it's cold and foggy!) then the giant swath of fans on the outside porch here will make you happy as a pig in sh*t. There's nothing wrong with the Replay at all but you should know what you're getting into before going: this is a place where pinball, plaid shirts, and PBR are in. If this isn't your cup of tea I might avoid the Replay, but if you're open to this scene it makes for a fun night out. They have an outdoor patio with a DJ as well as an indoor area with live bands. Keep in mind that there is cover ($3 last time I went) and the bar is cash only. Oh, and FYI...don't try to get a cocktail here, opt for a beer - it'll taste much better than my sloppily-made old fashioned. Still, if you have the right expectations coming into the Replay, it's a fine place to chill on the wooden booths, people-watch, and listen to some local bands. read more

I'm a trans guy and I had to pee in the women's bathroom because the toilet was not working in the men's bathroom. I can't pee in a urinal. This resulted in a situation. Luckily, the women in the women's bathroom were super cool and let me pee there. But it could have been violent. I am clearly a dude (facial hair, etc). When I went in and came out of the women's room, I risked getting beat up by the 8 guys in line for the men's room. Some made threatening comments. It was scary. I just had to pee. Hey, management, not cool! Fix your f-ing toilets so all people can pee safely. Otherwise, I had a blast dancing. read more

You know, I keep going here, I ought to review it. I used to go here back in the day, moved away for 8 years, and had to get my afternoon pinball and beer fun fix within a month or two of being back. My bar taste is a little on the divey or completely over the top side, so that is a warning. There's all kinds of fun fixes here. Thinking of the funnest flashes -- dancing in two very distinctly different styles to bands I was really diggin'; playing pinball with pretty speedy bartenders; and wood, wood everywhere out in what I will forever think of as a pirate's liar. i.e., the outside lounge area. This place is pretty cool. They have great live acts. But the icing on the cake is this hunk named Johnny. He hangs out and looks just like Mathew McConaughey. He's so buff and rich. The "hipster bar," if you could designate a single one in the already super alternative Lawrence bar hub that is Mass st. You can see some pretty interesting live music in the colorful place. From "we practice in my mom's garage" to "just finished up a tour across the midwest," you're sure to hear some new sounds from this place. Replay isnt known for it's drink specials, but it does host an open mic night, and there is always a fairly decent amount of people in the place on a normal friday night.
