A favorite local bar for me, my husband and our furbaby. They don't serve food but you are welcome to bring your own. If you want a snack they do have complimentary popcorn. In a recent visit to Lawrence for a concert, we hopped around a few places downtown during a weekday. I love nice, quiet sophisticated places with a good wine list. This isn't it. It's a fabulous no-frills dive bar with a water jug in the corner. The service was good, a local crowd that was fun and definitely a local spot to try. It was a decent spot for what it was. There's a bar a pool table and a patio. I'm from Houston Texas. So we don't have a lot of old bars like this. So it was nice. There's a patio in the back that leads to the parking lot. You can enter from the back and the front which faces the street. The drinks were great. And they have free popcorn. Louise's is one of the best bars in Lawrence. They have all the liquor you could ask for, a great staff, and a great classic bar vibe.

Louise's has a fond place in my heart, as it is where I met my sweets, but nostalgia aside, this place can be fun, if you are not there on a Thursday-Saturday night, when the bar service can take quite a while and it can be pretty crowded, especially in the cash-only upstairs and the single stall ladies rooms. The atmosphere is dive-y (once the smoking ban went into effect and you could actually see the place, it seems markedly less nice), but the bartenders are nice and the drinks are cheap. They have relatively (for a bar downtown) spacious patios, both up- and downstairs, and drink specials most nights (the best: Monday Wednesday--cheap wells, $1.50 to $2 singles and $3.50-$4 doubles; Tuesday $3.75 Boulevard schooners), so it is a great place to be in the summer, relaxing with friends or making some new ones. read more

Wow. The bartender in the crop top was so cool, I believe his name was Jake. He makes killer shirley temples and only forced me to buy one shot of Malort. Jake is way better than Josh. He didn't even make fun of me when I mispronounced Schooner. 10/10 recommend drinks poured by large men in crop tops. read more

Cold beer and friendly service. Good place to watch a KU game or just have a drink with friends. They've got everything a great dive bar should have, including fat spiderman! If I could live at Louise's downtown I would. If I could have physical relations with Louise's downtown I would. I will name my first child "Louise's Downtown" and then treat them better than the rest of my children. If you're going to drink in Lawrence then it should be here. Hey, you, with the five star rating: excuse me for saying so but the regulars here will have none of that. No sir. Take it elsewhere. This is nothing more than a two-fisted drinking joint here to serve those in serious need of an attitude adjustment. Beer and spirits rule. Looking for an artisanal coffee or beet martini or a drink with a silly name that means nothing? Blood orange margarita? Crisp, grapefruit laden New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or heavily oaked California Chardonnay? Move on. The no frills old-school saloon style seating, pool tables and marginally questionable bathrooms are just what you expect in a decades old joint like this. Yet step outside and they have a beautiful second floor deck complete with big screen TVs for watching sports and getting drenched in a sideways downpour as we did last night (our fault, our choice). Lotsa cement for hosing down whatever it is that needs hosing down the following day. Hell yea, long live Louise's. read more

The sad sister bar to Louise's West. A perfectly fine bar. I prefer to go there on weeknights when it's less crowded. There are good drink specials, some nights you can get schooners for $2.50! This is an anecdote from a friend of a friend, so I can't really vouch... But my friend's friend used to be a bouncer there but quit because he "got tired of getting punched in the face on weekends", so that's something to think about... My 2 friends and I decided to try Louise's for our FIRST time last night. We were having a good time until the male (white) bartender (they said his name was John Davis) came over to our table and told us to leave immediately because "the bartender had an issue with our friend." Weird, because it was our FIRST time there. My female friend then approached the bar to complain and the (white) female bartender said, "B**ch I'm trying to f***ing help you." My friend reacted and called her a b**ch back and the bartender said, "B**ch, call my f***ing manager, he won't give a f***." And while she was shrieking at us to "get the f**k out of her bar" she was throwing herself at the bar, as if she could've taken my friend but was only being held back by a physical object. Lol. We all are all Mexican and don't understand why our group was singled out. We will NOT be returning to this establishment. read more

On the bar trend today for writing reviews. So I decided, why not? I have only been to Louise's once, attempted to go once before but was rudly refused entry for a trival reason. Story time. I had lost my DL shortly after I had turned 21 (the paper thing they print out before you get the hard copy) and had not yet gotten my new on in the mail. So instead I had been using my Military ID to get into bars for a bit. My Military ID had expired a couple of days before my friends decided they wanted to hit Louise's for the Thursday night 2.50 schooners. I'm not one to pass up cheap drinks, so I joined, only to be refused entry by one of the rudest doormen I have ever met. Last in line, the guys asks for my ID and I hand him my military which he at first refuses, saying he cannot accept it as a valid form of Identification. When I informed him that in fact is said "identification card" on the front, he then decided to check it out in more detail and saw that it was expired. In stead of simply handing me my ID back and appologizing for not being able to let me in, he proceeded to berate me for being lazy by saying I obviously hadnt learned anything while in the military about taking care of myself and making sure my ID was up to date. I stood there, my friends looking over this man's shoulder for a good 5-10 minutes while he explained why everyone in the military was worthless. I held my temper and thanked the man when he returned my ID. I then proceeded to find a ride home. Since that debacle, I havent been a fan of the place. I now understand that Louise's is a very townie/hipster bar, where the likes of a military man wouldnt be liked a whole lot. Now, I don't want to lump everyone into one category and base my opinion of this place on that as I feel it would be closed minded. So instead I look to my second experience at the place. I went a second time aftering being invited once again to partake in some 2.50 schooners. I agreed, having updated my IDs since the last time. The place was a bit small, and seemed low-key. Not particularly my cup of tea, but I didnt have a problem with it, and actually enjoyed the environment that night. The two bartenders worked hard to make sure the packed bar was served efficiently, and it didnt take long for me to get my order. The place has a good selection of beer on draft, and their specials on Thursday nights are hard to beat. Also, they have pool. I give it three stars because it was a bit small, and seating was limited. I was one of the unlucky ones who got to stand the entire time I was there. In all, I wouldnt go to Louise's unless it was a Thursday. read more

Loved the great service and friendly staff. The drinks were very good. Prices are alos good atmosphere was nice, with both young and older crowd. They have bartender named Hanna she's beautiful smart and knows her way around making and serving drinks. She is also very friendly . I strongly recommend the Long Island Ice Tea. The best one I've every had. They don't have a dance floor yet but they will be expanding in the future for one. Also to have live music. read more

I have been to this bar several times and have never received good service from the bartender that works every Sunday. He actually insults the customers. My friends and I used to go in every Sunday after getting off work at a restaurant, and every time he is rude. We always tip well and are patient getting our drinks but it never seems to help the horrible mood this guy is in. We will never be back and i suggest no one go to this bar. Try louises west, the drinks are better, the atmosphere is nicer and the bartenders are always smiling. It's a shame that one bartender was able to ruin a favored towny bar , but he sure did. read more

When I think of Louise's the only things I can think of are the gray tiles on the floor, washed out by fluorescent lights hanging above pool tables, and frat boys carrying humongous "scooners" of Bud (I hear they have good deals on these massive 24oz. mugs). 'Nuff said. read more

Louise's is a great all around bar. There is something for everyone here and a place I think most people feel comfortable from folks with piercings and colored hair to the fraternity and sorority crowd and everyone in between. There are a lot of college age folks here but there are also older folks there as well. As the night goes on the crowd tends to get a bit younger of course but that is everywhere. This will be some peoples favorite bar and some not, but it is a place a group of people with mixed taste in entertainment can all go to and have everybody be comfortable and have a good time. read more

I have came into this bar twice, and both times I have had the same bartender on sundays. He us completely rude, called me a drug dealer and insulted me because of that. However I am a bartender so I trend to tip no matter the case, and tip well. After my first drink I asked for a glass of water, he rolled his eyes at me and I still tipped him a dollar. I can bring my business elsewhere on a sunday. I do not recommend coming here if youre looking for a nice bartender. read more

Came in for a beer and started a tab with the bartender. He took my card and I got my beer. I happened to leave the bar for a couple hours, but when I returned the next shift bartender couldn't find my card. As you can imagine I was less than thrilled and many expletives were uttered from my mouth hole. 7 days later I received my replacement card. Went there last Saturday got there around 12am have a few drinks by the time the bar was closing we got uber and left realized i left my tab open had him turn around so i could go close out my tab (most bars charge you for leaving it open overnight) I asked the white guy bartender downstairs if he could close out my tab explain that i was upstairs but now since the upstairs is closed i cannot go up there.. he proceeded to tell me that i had to wait until everyone in the bar left. This did not make any sense to me so i asked him you mean until everyone in here leaves?! why can't you just give me my card? Another employee came by me and he asked nicely if i needed to close my tab from upstairs i replied yes he was going to take me with him until the bartender told him not to because i was being rude?! I explained again i have an uber driver waiting for me and i need to go he then told me to get out and simply kicked me out. Normally i do not pull out the race card but i completely felt discriminated. I used come here when i was in college and never had these issues i talked to management the next day since i still had to get my card he said he would look into it but i doubt anything was done i know how these bars are they will probably just laugh it off... oh and they tried to say i was drunk however i only had 4 drinks on my tab and 2 of them were for friends and believe me I have a high tolerance. read more
