We've had Hog Wild in Topeka, so when we were in Lawrence and saw there location, we immediately knew where we were going to eat lunch. It's a convenient location with a drive thru. We were going to order online, but decided to just do the drive thru. We were probably the first customers of the day as we waited in the lot for them to open. They were fast to greet us. The food took just a couple of minutes to prepare, not bad for being there so soon. We drove over to KU Campus to sit in the shade and enjoy our lunches. We both got $5.99 pulled chicken meal deals, which come with a sandwich with choice of meat, fries and a drink. Since we just wanted a light lunch, it was the perfect amount. They give you a good-sized portion of chicken on a perfectly-toasted bun, some great curly fries (our choice of side) and a decent size drink, although we did upgrade the drink size for about 40¢ more, I think. They put some sauce on the sandwich but gave us extra sauce. I requested hot and they also gave us a mild and TONS of ketchup (maybe a bit more than necessary) and a good amount of napkins (THANK YOU for that). I love the watermelon tea at Hog Wild. I'm pretty sure my tea this time was just sweet tea, not Watermelon. It was still good, but if it was the watermelon tea, they were doing something wrong that day because it had Zero watermelon flavor. The hot sauce was fine, not really spicy to me. In fact, when I tried the mild sauce later I actually found it much more flavorful. We actually saved our little sauce cup and took it home with us to eat on some of our left overs of our own food we had in the fridge! read more

Tried the brisket and chicken plate with mac n cheese and potato salad. Brisket was very lean and had a nice smoke flavor. The chicken was on the dry side but good smoke to it. Sides were nothing special but still good. Meat portions were big enough i had leftovers for lunch. Definitely worth a stop. read more

The side container of cole slaw was less than half full and looked like someone had been eating from it. The lid was broken in 3 places before I touched it. I ordered through Door Dash and the bad was tightly ties closed with the receipt stapled to the outside and the bag was clean as was the inside of the styrofoam box the cole slaw was in (part of a 2 meat meal). The cole slaw was not dumped by the driver. I ordered Cherry Cobbler and it was not included in my bag, but Door Dash has made that right. Also, I did order 2 entrees and only received 1 cup of sauce to go with both. It has been a couple of months since my last order because my last order was messed up and because the food was sub par (gristly, fatty meat). As a college student, I can't say enough great things about this place. I'll start with what I order. The pulled sandwich meal deal at $5.99 feels like a highway robbery. Personally, I go with pulled pork for my meat of choice and fries on the side. The sandwich is Kansas City-grade BBQ and the fries are what all french fries should strive to taste like. But let it be known that the full platter options are also delicious. The ambience inside is cozy. Conveniently located off of 23rd street, my friends and I find ourselves dining in -- as opposed to using the drive thru -- and staying a while when we go. That brings me to the service. I am politely greeted and often checked on when I dine in. I will continue to go to Hog Wild as long as I live in Lawrence. read more

My mother chose this place to celebrate her mother's day lunch. We had never been here before, so first impressions are definitely lasting ones. The place is neat, clean and the smell of bbq isn't overpowering your nostrils. The girl who took our order was nice, but seemed sad in nature. She seemed as if something was upsetting her or like she had been crying. Nevertheless, she served us with a friendly demeanor. The food was quick and hot. The ribs were tasty, but could have used a few more minutes cooking. The potato salad had no flavor and the potatoes were way undercooked. I loved the mac and cheese and Texas toast. Their sauce was phenomenal. Awesome flavor...and the male cook was so nice. The Turkey is terrible, it tastes like packaged ham, it had too many nitrates and other preservatives. The Pulled pork was good (minus the 1/2" bone i found) and the sides were good and many options. The amount of meat you get for a BBQ plate is not much. You shouldn't feel hungry after BBQ and spending $13... disappointed. Hogwild is the newest entry into Lawrence for BBQ and the town has historically always been in need compared to its much bigger cousin Kansas City. Wichita-based, the Hog also has restaurants in Salina, El Dorado and Hutchinson with Lawrence being their newest venture. First off, the people working here couldn't be nicer and service is quick. When finished someone was promptly by picking up plates, napkins, etc. Two in our party of three opted for pulled pork sandwiches and I had the rib dinner (pork) with beans and fries. The ribs were a tad on the tough side on the outside and ends with not a lot of smoke flavor inside but still a pleasant hunk of meat that detached from the bone properly. Sadly, the curly fries and beans appear to come straight from a Sysco truck. Top that with the fact that we unanimously agreed someone didn't salt the fries at all and the beans had that straight out of a can taste. No meat, no smoke, little if any sauce. Uninspired beans are one of the great sad details in the BBQ experience for my nickel. Texas toast buttered comes with the dinner while a more traditional hamburger style bun with a little extra goes with the pulled pork. Sauces are very good, a hot and mild sauce with plenty of thickness and a sweet tangy taste. The dining area is pleasant enough but definitely high on the cutesy side of things. Not a distraction. The crowd was hopping and even though I was personally a little disappointed with my meal, it could be easily rectified with a little salt on the fries, some sauce and meat in the beans. I think this restaurant will do well. There's obvious attention to detail, I'm just thinking I got unlucky today with my choices. I hope they do well because Lawrence is always a town with plenty of folks needing a BBQ fix. I wouldn't hesitate to come again and would probably try their sandwich. I went through drive through and it was fairly speedy, much to my surprise. The cashier was very pleasant and sincere. She was helpful and friendly which is always a plus. I ordered a brisket and pulled pork sandwich. Yum, yum. Because you can only get a combo sandwich as a large, it was plenty big. Very big. I appreciated the fact that you put the sauce on the sandwich yourself. Often restaurants believe in smothering their food in sauces and gravies. I like to use it sparingly. The sauce was very tasty and not overpowering. It also was not too sweet. Sauces should not be sickeningly sweet, only dusted with sweetness. The price was right for the amount of food I was served. Good service, reasonably priced and generous portions. Overall, it was a yummy diversion from my usual. I enjoyed the meal very much. Highly recommended. read more

This is the first time going to this restaurant and I will be back! I ordered the 3 meat dinner combo and it was amazing. The meats I chose were ribs which I couldn't even pick up because they were falling off the bone, super tender and the best Smokey flavor. My second choice was spicy sausage and it had a little kick perfect flavor with bbq sauce on top. My third choice was the brisket also falling apart and great flavor and for my sides I got green beans and mashed potatoes. I didn't realize until after I left that they cheated me out of the Texas Toast, they charged me for 2 meats instead of 1 like I ordered, AND they didn't give me a discount when I ordered a water. I am always looking for great BBQ and Hog Wild is one that I can add to my list. On my first (and so far only) visit, our order was taken quickly and we were able to find a seat with some ease (although we were there at 11:30 am on a weekday and there were quite a few people already, so I assume it can get crowded). We ordered off the sandwich menu, I had the regular North Carolina pork and my companion, the beef and sausage and we both ordered curly fries. The food was delicious. I like both the regular and hot sauces, which were not necessary on my very juicy pork, but a great addition to the fries. I would like to go back and try some of the other meats (including the turkey and ribs) as well as the beans--next trip for sure. Although you order at the window, there is staff in the dining room ensuring you have everything you need and they are all very friendly. Is this the best, no it isn't but they are not bad. I am in a bbq club that hits KS/MO BBQ joints (have been to some of the best) so I wanted to try what Lawrence has to offer for BBQ and IMHO, this is Lawrence's best. I have been here 5-6 times and have only had one bad meal (it was around 6:30 PM on a Friday) there...it was REALLY salty but that might be due to them closing ealry and I got the end of the lot... Anyway, their pulled pork is good, the turkey is good and the brisket (which is shredded) isn't bad either. You can help yourself to hot peppers and pickles which is nice but the price....ahhh, the price....this town's BBQ joints have a price point as if they were BB's Landslide (ya ain't) but Hog Wild, their prices are good as are the portion sizes.... Hands down best BBQ in the Kansas City area. I moved here from Texas , and we drive all the way to Lawrence just to get bbq. A lot of restraunt like to take short cuts , and use microwave and fake bake meat . Not hog wild , this is properly handled , extremely fresh , 15-16 hour smoked brisket and hand pulled pork . Interestingly enough since my last review they have added a surcharge for beef. So as an example the two meat plate went up about a dollar from when they opened in August (which I noted last time) and now they have added $.50 to that so an increase of $1.50 roughly. Another interesting thing is that the ribs, seem to be getting more fat on them. My last two visits the ribs were fatty. I was sitting next to a couple of older gentlemen and over heard them talking about how greasy the ribs were. Tonight the ribs were over cooked, way to tender, and fatty compared to what they were serving before. I am hoping this is an anomaly and not a trend. They were nearly perfect before, but in my mind between the pricing, the overcooked fatty ribs they have lost a star. I will keep going back (I have been there about 10 times) and I am not ready to give up, but after I go there two more times I will let you know if they were showing their best for the opening (like a first date) and they really are just mediocre or they just had a couple of bad nights. Let me preface this by saying that I TOTALLY understand that during Covid, everyone is just trying to figure it out. But this might have been the absolute worst experience with just a restaurant period! Not only did I receive the complete incorrect order once, but twice! And I literally watched them put my incorrect food back into the refrigerator to give to someone else after I'd opened the container to see that my order was correct. Added in a Free State Brewery Ad Adstra and it made for a very nice dinner after a day spent sanding and scraping my mother in law's deck. The food is pretty good (I'm still on the lookout for potato salad that doesn't taste like it came out of a central warehouse somewhere though). I wasn't impressed with the amounts given on both the turkey sandwich and the pulled chicken - and the chicken was more like chopped in large pieces when we got it, definitely not pulled. The head scratcher for me is that one of the items on their menu is the Open Face Sandwich, which is described as "Texas toast topped with mashed potatoes, beef brisket & gravy." It does state at the top of their sandwich section (the entire sandwich section is made up of 4 different types of sandwich, two of which contain beef in their descriptions) that you are charged an extra 50 cents for beef, but I'll admit it was still a surprise to order the $6.99 Open Face Sandwich, described as being made with beef, and then to be charged an additional fifty cents. Overall I didn't feel like it was worth the price and it feels pretty shady to me to charge extra for a sandwich that is described as being made of beef and to be listed as a certain price less the extra fee. There are enough other places to choose from not to have to come back. read more
