I've heard about Yello Sub almost nonstop since I moved to Kansas and finally had the chance to try it out last weekend. I'm a sucker for delicious bread and their fresh baked wheat bread lived up to it's high praise. My sandwich was huge, had just the right ratio of bread to condiments to fillings and came out quickly. The employee behind the counter was a bit zombie-ish when taking our order and didn't seem to want to be there (but really, who wants to be at work on a Saturday afternoon?) but the deliciousness of the sandwich more than made up for that in my opinion. I'm looking forward to trying out the Planet Sub right up the street from my apartment to see if they live up to the Yello Sub since Lawrence is definitely too far of a drive for just a sandwich but it's probably a blessing in disguise-- I don't think my waistline could handle having a Yello Sub in driving distance of my apartment! I have a Pavlovian response to Yellow Submarine, if only for visions of a Pesto-Bello to dance through my head... Go here, and look at the menu. Ok, you see that? Ok, now look all around it. Order any of it. Just close your eyes and spin around and poke somewhere on that page, and order That Thing. It Will Be Good. Honestly though, I nearly always get the veggie sandwiches, and the Pesto Bello is way, way high on that list. So is the Spicy Tofu. And any of those delicious tempeh subs. I hear the meat ones are equally as amazing, but I just love tasty vegetarian food. Like many others, I dock a star for how *long* it seems to take them to make these subs. I don't quite get it... they also have forgotten to give me cards and been weird about nearly giving my food away several times. Very odd, seems like you would drop the standard of giving out cards if they were causing so many issues, no matter how "hip" it makes the place. I have rather fond memories of Yello Sub from my undergraduate days at the University of Kansas. I haven't eaten here in a few years, so I ought to return here for a sandwich with family or friends the next time I am in Kansas. I'm an out of towner. Came here for work for a week and ended up coming back to this establishment a few times. If I ever came back to Lawrence, I'd stop by again. These are probably the best subs I've ever had in my life. I try not to go to yello sub too much. Every sandwich I've had is delicious. The bacon mushroom melt really melts in your mouth. I literally have not eaten (or even considered eating) at another sub shop since I first ate here a couple years ago. I almost always get the Creamy Crab sandwich when I go but sometimes I get a foot long Creamy Crab and my dad gets the special sandwich they regularly change and we each eat 6" of each. Like others, the only reason this didn't get a perfect rating was for the slowness factor. Even on a pickup, when you're told "20 minutes", you still have to stand around in the store for an additional 20 minutes. I went to a Planet Sub in Shawnee the other day and had called in my order while driving in from Lawrence. They said "15 minutes" and I said I couldn't be there that quickly! When I walked in and my order was waiting, I had to check to see if I was in the right place. It would almost be faster to drive to Shawnee to get a sandwich than to order one in Lawrence! But planning ahead is worth it, because these sandwiches are fantastic! At work a couple of us might say, "Yello Sub tomorrow?" Then we can order shortly after they open and have a delivery in about an hour. read more

Try the Dagwood if you are a fan of meat on your sandwich. Pickles are good, but the potato salad sucks. What is it with all of the local potato salad, did anybody ever have a mother who taught them how to make potato salad? Yello Sub is a bit divey but it's a Lawrence classic. I always liked Mr. Goodcents better but Yello Sub is another local joint that you have to love - they make everything from scratch and have fresh toppings. I know that many people like that they toast their bread but I'm not a fan. There's a bit of a wait for your sandwich but not too bad. read more

I would like to second a previous reviewer's comment that the Tempeh Reuben sub should not come with Dijon mustard...the menu clearly states that it comes with Thousand Island dressing, which I've enjoy on my Reuben for about a year now.
