This is a review for dinner at Runner & Stone. We arrived on a Saturday night without a reservation and got a table immediately. I would recommend making a reservation just to give the staff a heads up and guarantee a spot since this is not a large restaurant. Highlights of the meal include the beet salad with feta-cumin dressing and the nettle gnocchi with grano padano cheese. All of the ingredients are fresh and you can tell this restaurants goes the extra mile to source quality ingredients which are very thoughtfully prepared. The results are outstanding, fresh, and flavorful plates. I would recommend going to this restaurant with someone you feel comfortable sharing dishes with because you'll want to try as many menu options as possible. Since this restaurant is also a bakery, diners are in for a treat when it comes to the table bread, butter, and a complimentary pastry to start the meal. I sadly can't remember the name of the white wine we ordered which paired perfectly with the food, but you really can't go wrong with their selection. The wait staff all took great care of us. Friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely attentive. We were stuffed and the bill for two with a bottle of wine was about $100. Not bad for what I would describe as very fine dining without the white table cloth frills. I will be coming back! read more

Okay, stop what you are doing and go and eat at Runner & Stone! We live far away but came to Gowanus for a midwife appointment. After our appointment, we asked her for a recommendation for healthy AND delicious! She said she's got just the place... Runner & Stone. Now we know that she loves us! The physical space is welcoming and you know you are in for a treat when the complimentary olive croissant squares show up... They are spiritual. R&S was kind enough to give us a few extra to take home. The bread is to die for, the food is so high quality and just exquisite. Came here for dinner finally. Been coming here for lunch for a while, it was about time for a change. Had the private area and between Emily and Julio, they took over and treated us like royalty. The foie gas was so good, I forgot to take a picture. The breads are made freah here, along with most of the things they make. Even thThey served te e mustard is made in house. Had some Brussels spouts, cauliflower all grilled and delicious. Even the French fries is fantastic. They serve most of the meal since we were a group of 12, family style. Had the Black Sea Bass from Rhode Island, with grilled Brussels sprouts and broccoli rabe. Then followed with the Bone In Rib Eye, with roasted cauliflower, and fries. The highlight of everything is the breads. They are primarily a bakery and Peter handles all of that part of the operation. For dessert, had the Quince shortcake and the cracked rye (like rice) pudding. To end the evening, a nice cup of latte! Julio and Emily made the night with the excellent food. Runner & Stone is a delight. We came here on a recommendation from the bartender at Givers and Takers ... and were very glad we did. After a tasty baked amuse-bouche, we devoured our beet salad (delicious). We didn't think it would get better ... then the spelt gemelli blew us away. Superb. Mushrooms were amazing; noodles were the right combination of firm and tender. Holy fuck it takes me 45 minutes to get here from Manhattan, but I keep coming back. This is a super cute little cafe/bakery - quiet and quaint, great decor, especially the downstairs area. They make a lot of stuff in house including the breads (obviously), the condiments, the butters and jams. If you come here, you HAVE to get the buckwheat baguette with butter and jam, just trust me. Regular brunch dishes are great too - excellent hearty french toast with delicious jam, and one of my favorites I've had here is this shirred eggs dish (what even is shirred eggs) with white beans (weird but good). The brunch menu is a bit more out there than the usual so be prepared to try something you don't normally order. I took off one star because they are always out of something. Every time I've been here, there's at least 1 brunch dish and 1 pastry they're out of, and I'm not really a late riser so I'm at brunch by noon at the latest. I came here on a whim just to kill time while waiting to meet up with a friend. I've read a lot about their pastries so I grabbed a table and ordered their almond croissant and a cup of cappuccino. The almond croissant was probably one of the best almond croissants I've had in a very long time! It was really crunchy with lots of almond flavor in the filling. This is what almond croissants should be...both flaky and crunchy at the same time. Their cappuccino was also spot on. While most people around me were ordering brunch meals, I was pretty content with just my croissant and coffee. The people here were really nice and didn't rush me especially since I had a table all to myself. I would definitely come back again and try either their brunch or dinner. read more

I'm just going to go out on a limb and say this place is probably best for breakfast and lunch, but not for dinner. Our Saturday night meal was pretty tasty and the service was very good. But not so memorable that I can recall what exactly we ate (it was pasta for me). It just didn't knock my socks off. And the portions - particularly for the appetizers - were very small. Surprisingly we didn't care for dessert either - it was some type of rye pudding. Another dessert had booze in it and the one non-drinker at our table seemed to get it all in one bite. That said, I will gladly say that Runner and Stone has delicious baked goods and I love their chocolate croissant. And if you can get their Christmas stollen during the holidays, it is out of this world. I just don't think I'll be back for dinner. read more

Went here for brunch last weekend--packed, but we were seated within about 10 minutes. We ordered coffee, the two-egg platter with bacon, an order of the fries with hollandaise, a baguette to share, and an almond croissant to go. The fries were just ok--would have been nice to have the sauce on the side instead of all over, but the fries didn't seem like they were very crispy to begin with, so maybe that wouldn't have helped. Pass. The egg platter came with potato hash and a piece of baguette--upcharge for the two pieces of thick bacon. Together, all of those things tasted good but very, very one-note, with the one note being "butter." Would have appreciated some hot sauce or herbs to break it up. And the coffee was fine, but the service wasn't very attentive, and we had to flag someone down every time we wanted a refill. Where this place earns its stars is with the bread. We loved the baguette so much that we saved some of it for later. And I can barely describe the almond croissant--crispy on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside, with all that almondy goodness in between. Given how good the bread is, it's kind of nuts not to have a true breakfast sandwich on the brunch menu. I'd have been all in. I later found out that there's one on the lunch menu, so maybe next brunch I'll try asking if they'd be willing to make it. read more

I love Runner and Stone and it is fast becoming my "go to" restaurant. Another restaurant used to be my and my friend's favorite restaurant but we both agree (with a little bit of guilt) that Runner and Stone's food is a cut above our previous favorite's. When I go with friends we tend to order a bunch of plates (I'm a vegetarian and my friends are kind enough to accommodate/join me). Every dish is created with great care and the food is scrumptious. If I had any negatives, it would be that they close so early (9:30?). I tend to eat on the late side. I don't drink, but I love to savor my food and maybe have an after-dinner cup of tea. I tend to eat at the bar which is classy and beautiful. The service is excellent. If you are just walking by and want a snack, stop in and get a housemade pretzel to go with mustard! read more

I've only been here once. And I was somewhat drunk. And it was in that weird time after lunch/brunch and before dinner. A lot of restaurants aren't even open then, but Runner was. Our needs were simple. Booze and things to soak up the booze. I got a South Brooklyn. And it was good. I also got a croissant. And it was really, really good. Other baked items were as well. The layout of the place is kind of funky, and I've heard the regular menu is hit or miss, but they're doing some stuff right, and I'd be happy to go back. read more

Fresh & delicious is the best way to describe this restaurant. The restaurant is located in a part of Brooklyn that is up and coming; sorta what Williamsburg used to be. I loved the braised short rib stew for my appetizer. For my main I got the market fish wrapped in pancetta. It really hit the spot. The plating is beautiful and I loved the decor. This place has it all for a quick bite or a formal sit down dinner. The breakfast offerings (pastries, breads) are the best you will taste anywhere. They prepare and bake everything on premises and it's all outstanding. The brunch/lunch menu portions are perfect and the prices are very reasonable. The Chicken Cacciatore sandwich and roasted pumpkin salad were out of site. They have a nice dinner menu and they change their menus seasonally. The almond croissant. Best almond croissant I have ever had in my life. I get it as frequently as possible, and I have shared its greatness with many others, who all totally agree. It is crisp and flaky on the outside, with a perfectly not-too-sweet almond paste inside. It's like a double-baked, filled croissant, and all almond croissants worldwide should follow suit. Outside of my almond croissant habit, I have tried several of their other baked goods (never disappointed) and also eaten twice in the restaurant, once for dinner, and once for brunch. At dinner (April 2015), every course was well put together, and the bread basket was diverse and utterly delectable. The environment was romantic, effortlessly casual but not too casual, and Honestly, though, I would take the place overall down a half-star for how poorly balanced all our cocktails were that night. I'm sorry that I am writing this months later, so I can't specify which cocktails we had, but we tried 3 of them, all of which sounded delightful on paper, but all of which came out somehow off. Maybe it was just a bad night/not the regular bartender, so I am still leaving it at 5 stars. Our brunch meal (September 2015) was overall tasty and positive, and not too pricey. We had the chicken liver pate, the rice ball of the day, and eggs Benedict with salmon. We weren't blown away. but we were happy with our meal overall. So overall, the almond croissant is a huge winner and merits the 5 stars 100%. I would recommend you go there even just for that. Or check out their stand at the Park Slope greenmarket on Sundays! And dinner there definitely merits the plunge--I'm hopeful that the cocktails would pleasantly surprise us all and be as bomb as they sound from the descriptions. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for dinner on Valentine's Day. Things started off really well with some sort of complementary olive pastry, which was delicious. The roasted squash salad we had as an appetizer was also phenomenal. Unfortunately, my entree--the paccheri with calamari ragu--was incredibly fishy. I really like calamari, but something did not taste quite right with this dish. My boyfriend had the orecchiette with broccoli rabe and pork sausage, which seemed substantially better. For dessert, I chose wrong once again and had the grapefruit tatin. The white chocolate ice cream that came with it was great, but the grapefruit seemed like little more than what you would have for breakfast. It was sort of a puzzling dessert. My boyfriend had the rye brownie sundae, which seemed much tastier. All in all, I thought the food was uneven. If the restaurant were located somewhere more convenient, I would probably give it another shot, but it's a pain to get there, so I probably won't be racing back anytime soon. read more

Been here twice after work meetings. I had the duck pastrami salad (delicious) and a latte (fantastic). The server, who I have seen twice, was extremely personable and attentive. While this experience was nice and all, I need to mention the best part: the baked goods. I bought a hot cross bun to take on the road and goddamn it was good! It was the best one I have ever had. We had a great dinner here for a friend's birthday recently. They set us up in a small private area downstairs which was great for the size of the group, though the table set up was just a little awkward. Drinks were well-mixed and the bartender was able to make signature cocktails based on people's requests. I would have liked a few more beer options, but those that they did have were good. The food here was great. We had a multi-course meal and a lot of it was family style which meant everyone was able to sample a bit of everything. The two pasta dishes we had were highlights of the meal, with the orecchiette being the best. My main course, a NY strip, was only ok as I think the piece wasn't well-butchered and had a lot of extra fat/grizzle on it. That being said, it was cooked well, and looking around the table, it seemed like my steak was the exception to the rule. Service was accomodating and the space was nice, I'd definitely recommend Runner and Stone for a meal. read more

My first inclination that Runner & Stone existed was when I ate across the street at The Pines, and was almost more impressed with the bread accompanying the cheese plate than the cheese itself - that's really saying something as I adore cheese! After that experience, I knew I had to check out Runner & Stone for dinner! My husband and I went on a weeknight and were immediately impressed with the minimalist, ecofriendly architecture. We were seated towards the back, with a lovely view of their outdoor terrace (no seats out there I'm afraid) and a great breeze as well. Service was knowledgeable, and we soon found ourselves enjoying amuse and baked breads that were delicious. We're talking crispy, crunchy, olive-oily bread here folks, it was delicious! I started with the baby beet salad, accompanied by a delicious walnut yogurt dressing that really popped in terms of fresh, tangy flavor. Can't remember husband's appetizer, but for dinner I had the Fish of the day, which was Fluke, cooked in a flavorful grebiche sauce that is sort of a mix of capers, onions and eggs - I'd never had anything like it before but found it to be absolutely unique and delicious! My husband had the merguez, a hearty dish finished with garbanzos and a tangy harissa. We also tried some vegetables - save room for these!! Our haricots vert were buttery and delicious. As much as I wanted to try dessert I was full from eating every bite off of my plate. I would definitely return, it's a beautiful space in Gowanus and quite near where I live. Absolutely an A+ experience, from beginning to end, for our daughters wedding reception on Saturday evening April 05, 2014. The dinner was for 20 people and was held in the private downstairs room at Runner & Stone. All guests were able to choose an appetizer and an entree off of the regular restaurant menu. (though the menu was thoughtfully printed with the names of the bride & groom on the front:) Every single appetizer and entree were spectacularly delicious and gratifying. A special thank you to our masterful waiter - who amazingly served us all simultaneously and with appropriate temperature food. All of our guests were so pleased with their dinner. Not thinking it could get any better - we were, once again, blown away by the elegant & delectable "baked on the premises" wedding cake. Truly, what a treat for everyone - that cake was one-in-a-million scrumptious. The above is no exaggeration and I haven't even mentioned how affordable it was. We would especially like to thank Alexandra, the assistant manager. From our initial inquiry about having the wedding reception at Runner & Stone, through the planning stage, and finally being on-site to ensure the events success -- Alexandra was phenomenal. YUM YUM YUM! And that's only for their baked goods. Can't wait to come back after reading the other Yelpers' reviews on the actual substantive foods, but I'll comment on the baked goods for now. I've been waiting for this Gowanus nugget to drop for a while. Impressive pedigree of the owners -chef and baker, especially the latter who was the head baker at Per Se and Bouchon Bakery.... and boy do they deliver! The pastries include butter, chocolate and almond croissants, turnovers, and financiers. YUM! And the breads, which we took to a New Years Day brunch, got rave reviews. The Spelt Ciabatta, Miche and Buckwheat Baguettes are incredible and bursting with the perfect crusty outside with soft and aromatic chewy doughness on the inside. Some serious bread here people! Nice two-story space, modern yet not cold and quite inviting. A few tables by the windows, stools at the bar, and tables in a long row in the rest of the space. Boy I remember when the social club across the street was the only open storefront on the street. And it really wasn't open Ya know wha' I mean? Great, I mean great fried chicken. The duck pastrami sounded weird, but it was really delicious. Bread basket, yes breadbasket is to die for. The breads are really really good. Fresh, meaty sardines as an appetizer were really good. Key word is fresh! Braided ricotta ravioli was toothsome and wonderful. Good selection of wines by the glass. Waitstaff was knowledgeable, courteous and polite. Awesome carbs. I had dinner at runner and stone before my birthday party and it was a good time. They double as a bakery and it shows in great ways at dinner. Our meal started with complimentary mini croissants and the breadbasket included three types of delicious bread. All of the pasta is made in house and the rabbit ragu lumache was fantastic. Dessert was a chocolate almond tart, which I liked a lot since I don't care for very sweet desserts.
