I came here for dinner on a Monday night. The place is larger than you would expect from looking at the outside. We ordered the duck pastrami and the large orecchiette with pork sausage and broccoli raven. The bread basket was really good since they bake their own bread so the bread is fresh. The duck pastrami was interesting - making your own pastrami sandwich with duck breast instead of pastrami. The duck was not warm though. I wish it wasn't so cold. The orecchiette was tasty and the sausage was juicy. I would come back to try their brunch. read more

Wow, I adore this place. I had the great fortune to come here with some professors who have made this their spot for special dinners and so we got treated like royalty. But I have no doubt Runner & Stone is consistently the bomb dot com when it comes to service. First off, the liquor and wine selection here is impeccable - local gin, orange sparkling wine, a whiskey sour that perfectly hit the spot, etc. Then, the unbelievable food. We opened with these crunchy olive baklava type bites and then some of the most savory and flavorful bread I've ever had. We had some of their specials (the potato and ham croquettes were unbelievable), as well as some of their First dishes (the beet salad was very, very good). Then the entrées: oh my GOSH that fried chicken is so good, on a bed of tart slaw. And finally, the mindblowing desserts: I had the elderflower creme brûlée with black currant jam and buckwheat shortbread and my word, did they do that creme brûlée justice with the perfect caramelized layer and the sweet sweet jam underneath. The staff was helpful and offered personalized suggestions to guide our decision-making. They sent us on our way with loaves of bread (so psyched to try this stout cheddar bread) and bellies full of warmth and good food. Runner and Stone was our go-to brunch spot pre-pandemic, and then we moved away. We returned last night for dinner and cannot recommend this place enough! The staff are incredibly warm and helpful, and the food was outstanding. We had the hummus, vegan caesar, and crab-stuffed jalapeño apps. Then we shared a pasta, the steak, and fried chicken. What are you doing right now? Nothing you say? I think you should run over to runner and stone! (Haha cheesy I know, but true) I love runner and stone. It is the cutest little place for great coffee/tea as well as a good meal. The staff are all very nice and welcoming and the atmosphere is very Sunday afternoon everyday of the week. My absolute fave thing to have here is the chamomile tea and the ham and cheese croissant. It is the best ham and cheese I've had. If you are going in hopes to try the ham and cheese croissant it's best to go as early as possible because they do sell out fast. I've taken many walks over to find they were sold out. They put the perfect amount of ham and cheese inside and the outside is topped with seeds and flavor almost the same tastes you would get on top of an everything bagel but more subtle. The soft pretzels here are also very good they are nice and soft. If you are ever looking for a good breakfast or brunch spot this is the perfect place to go. read more

During the week, this is a good, lonely, unexpected sort of spot. Perfect, spacious place to dump your girlfriend. Or to tell your staffer that you are embezzling funds. In other words: it's a big, empty, quiet place during the day. The coffee is a bit pricey ($2.50), but you get a free refill (although that's not necessarily communicated to you). Couldn't keep the groups straight. We opted to just sit and dine at the bar. The bartender also seemed completely confused--confused why we wanted to see the drink menu, why we wanted to order drinks, why we wanted to order food, how to clear the plates. And on top of that, the drinks were terrrrrrrrible! I've seriously never had drinks so terrible before. I had the el jefe, which was ... Okay, didn't taste anything like the description of tequila and grapefruit, etc. I drank it to not waste $14, and ordered the gowanus dodgers. It legit tasted like water from the gowanus canal. It'd actually be a good gag drink. Food-wise, I got the steak. Medium rare, was more like medium-well done. It was dry and tasteless. Came with stale fries. My friends ordered ravioli and the fish of the day. They weren't raving but didn't complain either -- we were at dinner catching up so I guess it wasn't really worth the energy. Yeah, the service here is awesome, which is an excellent complement to having an onsite bakery. My fiancee stated her girlcrush on the waitress in no uncertain terms afterward.) Runner & Stone serves a damn good brunch on Sundays. I'll be the first to admit that the wait sucks (even with two levels of seating, it was a 20 minute wait after we were given a 10-15 estimate). The spicy Blood Mary is deliciously spicy; I believe the rim was salted with a combination of celery salt, cayenne and black pepper. The almond croissant was probably one of the best croissant I've ever had. The inside was spongey and moist while the outside was flaky and warm; a unique combination along with the almond flavor. A half baguette is plenty to start out with (we actually ordered a whole at first, but we were brought half by accident, which was actually a good thing). It came with unsalted butter, but for some reason we didn't have salt or pepper available at our table. I also had the smoked sausage with two eggs. The sausage was good, but a little dry. The special of the day was a prime rib sandwich with hollandaise sauce. My friend ordered it and let me try some; they should definitely promote it to the main menu! We sat in the basement (where inexeplicably, there seemed to be a Sean Paul playlist on an iPod dock playing) and service was a little spotty. My friend ordered a second coffee and it never came. I grow more and more impressed by this place each time I go in here. The first time is was for breakfast pastries and bread. They have amazing bread. Their baguettes are perfect. Let me start a new paragraph here, because this experience was deserving enough for its own context. Wow... if this had been my first meal at this place, I might have given it 5 stars. It was incredible, from the service right down to the food. They started off by offering up some small savory pastries and fresh bread, playing to their bakery strengths... and very well done. I wasn't wild about any of the cocktails on the list but the server was able to recommend something I liked. For entrees we had the braised lamb and the ricotta ravioli. It's hard to go wrong with braised lamb shank, but they knocked it out of the park. Whatever those moroccan spices were, they hit the ratios perfectly. And pasta always seems a little boring to me but this was well done too. And all through this, the service was on point... friendly and attentive. This place has great overall value. Dinner for 2: drinks + entrees + dessert = ~$80 (not including tip here). That places like this are starting to open up in the neighborhood makes me feel good about the direction of Gowanus. Between this place and Littleneck, I'm going to have some very hard dining decisions to make when I get to that intersection. read more

We came here for brunch, with mixed results. If it could give the experience 3.5 stars I would. The baguette, French toast and the minestrone soup were all well received. The French toast wasn't too overwhelming huge or sweet, and the homemade preserves it came with were tasty. The housemade bacon was really disappointing - very little meat or flavor and overpriced at $5 for the stingy serving. I enjoyed the cauliflower and gruyere sauce, but the biscuit it came with had an odd texture and flavor. At $16, it definitely wasn't worth it. We surprisingly finished all our bread from the basket before we had our entrees. We came on a friday night and there wasn't a wait yet. However, because we didn't make reservations, we got one of the high tables in the front where it does get drafty from the door being opened. We had the: - Octopus app - The octopus was cooked just right with a little bit of chewyness. - Braised Lamb Shank - the lamb was moist, flaky, and filling. However, by the end of night, I think if you ate the whole dish, the flavors would have been too overpowering. - Fish of the day - This was one of the better deals of the night with a whole fish and subtle flavors. "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name." And other times you want to go so that you know that you can get a damn good cup of coffee and a damn good croissant, and that's exactly why I love this place. The best part about this spot, is that they make all the pastries in house, and not many coffee joints can say that. I'm a huge fan of home baked goodies, and literally everything here is super tasty. From the pretzels, to the varying breads, the almond croissants, chocolate croissants, plain croissants-- when restaurants take the time and effort to put love into their food, you can actually taste it. When I absolutely love certain coffee places-- it's simple, I come to places like this because they've consistently got great coffee, the service is simple & friendly, and they've got the best things to pair with that warm cup of Joe. I also appreciate that this spot, though it looks pretentious, it actually feels like just the regular café. This place is absolutely terrific. We had a large table and tried more or less every pastry available, and we all agreed that everything was perfect. The almond croissant in particular will absolutely be tops on the "best pastries" lists in the city! It was a spectacular combination of an almond croissant with a buttery ground almond filling somewhat akin to baklava. Sensational. The sandwiches were great as well. We particularly enjoyed our fritter sandwich. Finally, everyone that worked there was lovely, and when you come with a large table, particularly with lots children, you don't always expect such a friendly reception. They couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. They also had extra seating downstairs, so we never felt rushed to vacate for other customers. I keep buying this super good buckwheat baguette. Always delicious, I use it toasted for breakfast with jam, as a snack with a piece of cheese or cold cuts, for lunch and dinner. Goes on everything :) I checked the size, this and the one that Whole Foods sells is exactly the same. The extra $1 that WF charges might be for...just a recharge. Too much to me. I understand that they are open 7/7 and from 8am till 11pm but I will try to come and buy the bread from Runner anytime possible. The Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn has many resident's, and no real bakery. Runner and Stone is the only place in the nabe where one can purchase a loaf of bread, and pastries. If you own a vehicle make a trip elsewhere. To begin, staff and patrons are not adhering to social distancing rules, and nobody is wearing a mask. Bread is tough and tasteless, and pastries aren't any better. Came for brunch with my boyfriend and his family. The decor is adorable. Super hipster, but we're in Brooklyn, so what do you expect? My boyfriend had a cappuccino and his sister had a latte; they were both impressed with their drinks. The 5 of us spilt a handful of baked goods. The buckwheat baguette with house made butter, pretzel that was also served with the butter, chocolate and banana croissant, lemon poppyseed pound cake, and an apple turnover. All delicious, but the baguette was out of this world. Everyone ordered different things. Sounded as though the morning crew loves this place (and I think I would too)... Unfortunately, dinner was just mediocre. There was just that *something* missing throughout the meal... I wanna try everything here. Greeted by smiles and warm hellos from all the staff upon entering. I ordered at the bar. Before even looking at the menu, I settled on the special quiche of the day. I was pleasantly surprised by the comfortable spacing between tables, low noise level, and good amount of light. The service was wonderful! It was prompt but they didn't make you feel rushed! Clean bathrooms. Now into the good stuff, the food! -Complimentary amuse bouche: Small square of flaky bread like a extra crunchy croissant with olive pieces. A -Complimentary bread assortment: Buckwheat Baguette, Bolzano Miche, and a third unknown bread with house-made butter. I've never had such flavorful bread and that homemade butter just put it over the top! A+ -Duck Pastrami appetizer with beer mustard, pickled onions, rye bread: My favorite appetizer of the night! Fatty and juicy, paired well with the accompaniments! Smaller portion though. Only 5 pieces total I believe. It was very heavy for a vegetarian dish! The homemade gnocchi was too al dente. Worst of all it was lacking in the flavor department. I didn't really taste the caramelized onion or pistachio. Pass! C -Squid Ink Bucatini with lobster, crab, pepperocino, herbs, chilies: My friend got this as the entree size. The pasta is in the shape of long straws. It was interesting since I never tried squid ink pastas before. It's very fishy though. Probably due to it being topped with seafood. Also garnished with crunchy breadcrumbs. So if you don't enjoy the taste of the ocean then skip this. Since I'm not a fan of fishy things, I'd hard pass on this! C- -Coffee Panna Cotta with whipped cream and cacao nibs: It was served with chocolate shortbread on the side. This was excellent! Lots of delicious coffee flavor and not too sweet. I appreciated the contrasting textures between the soft, custardy panna cotta vs the crunchy cacao nibs and shortbread. A -Croissant, $2.50: I asked our server to set aside a croissant for me since I heard such great things about them! It didn't disappoint even after 7pm! A+ Pro Tip: Half price bottle of any wines during Monday and Tuesday dinner! We got the Terre Di Marca Prosecco. Normally $42, but we got it for $21. Really great deal when a glass of the same prosecco is $11 each! Everything came out to about $130 after tax (not including tip yet). Not bad for 2 appetizers, the equivalent of 2 entrees, 1 dessert, 1 pastry, and 1 bottle of wine. Only thing I didn't love was the industrial/empty streets of this neighborhood (Gowanus). Slammed my elbow on the wall getting my phone from my pocket, due to some oddly placed (permanent) decor at my wobbly table in the back corner. Really good warm green olive croissant to start made me forget about that quickly, even in the hard chairs. The service was friendly and relatively attentive throughout (only misstep was leaving me with a steak knife for a second round of bread&butter), but the house music really clashed with the sleek, otherwise quiet space (the only other table had a lot of useless ?s). Dropped by Runner & Stone, a Michelin Bib Gourmand, on an early Saturday evening BBEats deal meant a Complimentary appetizer ("first" or "small second", in this case a tasty but unremarkable duck pastrami) plus a Citi Extra Perk of Complimentary Specialty Bread (rye baguette was available) (and 1-Month Extended Redemption). Really weak selection of 'Thirds' aka entrees left me with the 12oz NY Strip steak medium rare ($35), which was alright until the last 2 bites, which were entirely gristle. First I will say that the food was very good and our waiter, Jeremy, was top-notch. That said, we won't be going back due to our interaction with the Host, Julio, which left us with a bad taste in our mouths (pun intended). With so many other restaurants to choose from, I will go to one that acts like it wants me as a customer. Here is what happened: Our party of 4 arrived for our reservation and Julio said he had a table for us downstairs. We asked to be seated upstairs at an open 4-top. He told us no because he was keeping it for a party of 6. Julio led us to the charmless basement that at one point filled with not so pleasant cooking aromas from the kitchen below. The table he gave us was so close to another table on one side that we couldn't get into our seats. We asked to push it back as there was 5-6 ft of empty space on the other side. The request was not greeted with enthusiasm and he said couldn't push it too close to a door marked "employees only". He moved it a fraction. We had to move it more ourselves so we could sit down and be comfortable. During the evening one employee did use that door a few times -- he carefully opened and closed and seemed quite fine doing so. All of this was annoying, but what pushed us over the edge was that we could see the table we asked for and it stayed empty for the first hour of our meal, and then was filled with a party of 4. We got the message. We won't be back, but we do thank Jeremy for his sense of humor and his excellent food recommendations. read more

I have had their pastries a few times at the farmers market and stopped in finally for brunch. The french toast was exactly what I want french toast to be: custurdy but light, as though the bread had been thoroughly soaked, not just coated. I also enjoyed the banana and nut compote on top. I haven't had a lot of other food there, just almond croissants, but they have always been delicous. Grabbed brunch at Runner & Stone with family friends who live/work in the Gowanis neighborhood and we weren't disappointed. We sampled some pastries, a ham and cheese danish, lemon poppyseed bread and a buckwheat baked custard bread...all three amazing, but surprisingly (at least to me) the buckwheat treat was by far the best. It was so moist on the inside and I never though I could enjoy buckwheat as much as I did. I ordered the chicken liver pate for my meal and it was rich, decadent, creamy and probably the best chicken liver pate I've tasted...and I've tasted a lot. For $9.00 it was a steal. The staff is so friendly and what I loved most was that it's clearly a neighborhood spot where everyone goes on the regular. We grabbed seats in the empty downstairs area to enjoy the comfy couches. The chocolate croissant was flaky with the right amount of chew, just the way I like it. Unfortunately. they were out of the regular baguettes and we had the buckwheat version, but it was still very good. We ordered the grilled cheese with bacon and the mackerel sandwich. Came here with a large party and split a bunch of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Everything was phenomenal. We started with a nice bottle of red - I honestly wish I remembered the exact name (it was a cab) of the wine that was recommended by our server, but it was delicious and everyone raved about it. We split the mushroom salad, shrimp toast, local cheese, and the spicy curried hummus. My favorite was the mushroom salad. The shrimp toast tasted kind of fishy and wasn't exactly what I expected, but still decent. For entrees, I split the NY strip with my sister - it was a perfect medium rare and the chimichurri was a delightful complement to the steak. Others got the fish of the day (halibut), pork chop, gnocchi, and the kale risotto. I kept hearing great things about the gnocchi so I'll definitely have to try that next time. The risotto came in a small bowl (great as a side), but came out a bit too cheesy for my taste. The service was excellent and we got our own table downstairs which I highly recommend for a large group/private party. Will definitely be back. read more

Steak was greasy. Yuck. My experience at Runner and Stone was out of convenience. I was looking for a nice place to have dinner, before heading to a concert at Barclays. The place in general was great, drinks were ok, but the food is nothing to even mention. I should have ordered something else. I did however, have a great salad. It was fried pig ear and a fried egg on top...Weird right? It was the only thing I had that was good. Ok, Let's do this... PROS: Good Location in Brooklyn. We were a party of 6, went for dinner on a Thursday at 7, made reservations in advance. They had our table ready when we walked in, and we were seated immediately. (score 1 for Runner & Stone for knowing both how to take the reservation AND honor the reservation!) Service was great ... friendly and attentive. I ordered a glass of wine, and our server brought the bottle and gave me a taste before pouring. Nice. We'd heard about the bread. And yeah, the bread is fantastic, and the butter is cultured in-house! From there, we shared a few apps - all were great - and moved onto the entrees. Actually, to cut to the chase, all the food from apps to dessert was prepared well and quite delicious. We had a wonderful tiome here and highly recommend. They gave us some chocolate croissants to take home for next-day breakfast as we were leaving. OMG best I've ever had! We shall return! read more

You can be rest assured that amazing dining can be coupled with a conscience. Runner & Stone's pastries are unparalleled. That fact is known. Infused with flavor and artistry, you understand each roll, pie, and piece of bread was made with extreme attention to detail. This also extends to the main menu. Our large party ordered most of the appetizers- my favorites were the monkfish chili, duck salami, and beet salad. Hands down the patè was my favorite. Luscious, creamy, not overwhelming- several in our party shuddered when I ordered the patè! Guess what- they are more of it than I did! The main courses of bucatini and streak with kale chimichurri was amazing. But the pork chop was heavenly. All in all amazing- and worth our trip from the upper west side. It's in a more industrial area which lends to even more charm. A+ Those who are alcohol free, ask the bartender for "The Marietta" - seltzer, house made ginger syrup, and cranberry. A++ read more

Food was soooo good! I will go back for sure! I love they food and their service. Went there a big group and they were so nice and accommodating. They made sure our group was taking care of! I ordered the fish sandwich and it was amazing! The soup of day was a potato soup even better. I had a great meat and can't wait to eat there again. read more

Upscale without being pretentious, Runner & Stone threads the needle and feels like a necessary addition to this neighborhood. I'd been looking for the perfect pasta dish for months -- this was where I found it. Their orecchiette is beyond words. My girlfriend opted for fried chicken, which was brilliant while it was hot but then unbearably salty once it cooled down. Service was effortless and felt genuine. Prices may seem a little high, especially for Gowanus. The food proves its value once served. With drinks, tread carefully -- some spirits are a bargain while others are priced for a Manhattan hotel. read more

My second time here and both times had such a bad experience with the services. People at the counter are so rude that we eventually decided to leave everything and run out. We used to buy their pretzels and bread at the park slope farmers market for years and decided to come to the bakery to try it out. The first time we came in, the staff was quite rude, but people have bad days so we decided to give it another chance today. Today was even worse so this will be our last time here.
