Simply outstanding!! Runner and Stone is so much more than a bakery. Its breads and pastries are on another level but its provisions are my go to. It's my favorite bakery for the following: Buckwheat baguette is unrivaled and as close to France as you can get. The provisions: Restaurant quality prepared eats like cucumber gazpacho and mushroom bolognese plus trout spread. This is another level. It's Round Samp x100. There's a new pastry the chocolate scone with fruit pieces that's the best scone I ever tried! When it's pie season theirs will knock your socks off. Can't believe I never reviewed R&S because I am literally obsessed with this place and if I lived closer I would be there on the daily. read more

Food was great. Service was to the point. And the place itself is super confusing. Is it sit down ? Service? A bit unclear. I had to ask. Then there's wine and beer and coffee in the daytime. Decor is very much in between a cafe and fancy restaurant. Which is obviously quite drastic which causes my confusion. You see bus boys brining the food out to the front, to allow the person running the front to bring to the tables. Why not have the bussers bring the food to the tables. Seems silly the cashiers are doing multiple jobs. read more

As a longtime fine dining server, I offer feedback to help good spots get even better. First visit yesterday for a late lunch. Cashier seemed checked out--more focused on dinner than present service. No greet, no flow: no menu rundown, no specials, no "order at the counter," no "help yourself to water." Just crickets. Every question we asked got a clipped, emotionless answer. When I complimented the dinner menu, I got a half-nod. Aloof? Bad day? Or classic NY cold shoulder? Food runner dropped our plates off at the counter for the cashier. I said thank you--got a glance and a tight smile. No words. Pro tip: lunch guests can become dinner regulars. A little warmth can turn a one-time visit into a loyal following. Food was great. Sandwiches a little on the small side. Best fries I've ever had quite possibly. Hot food fresh ingredients prepared and served beautifully. Cute very small place. I liked seeing the garden above. Upon coming into the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was the nice modern design and ambiance. I ordered the mortadella sandwich at the front, and the service was great. The workers were super kind. After sitting down, my sandwich came soon after. The sandwich is a perfect size for lunch, filled with fresh ingredients, huddled in soft foccacia-like bread. The ratios of the components were also perfect. It was definitely quite expensive -- $16! But I have gotten used to these prices in the city. Grabbed some coffee and snacks from Runner & Stone on Saturday morning. An odd spot that needs more direction and simplification. Quality: It is a bit confusing as to what Runner & Stone wants to be. Several guests in line were attempting to order things they saw online that don't exist. Each menu in the place also seemed to have a different set of items listed. In the end I ordered what I could point to. My Latte was fine and pretty affordable. I had two snacks a Cheddar And Olive Pastry and an Almond Croissant. Again both fine, the Almond Croissant was a bit better than the savory option. Neither however would have me running back. Quantity: Standard size drinks and snacks. Value: $4 for a Latte. $4-$7 for Pastries. Ambiance: Runner & Stone is a cafe and bakery in Gowanus. I think it has had many different iterations from before COVID to now, but has settled into a coffee shop and bakery format. They have a large ordering counter, which seems too big for the space. A few tables near the front window, high-tops along the left wall, and a more tables towards the back provide just enough seating for the few guests that stay. The space is dim and not ideal for working or reading. Crowd: A line formed, but it was mostly because of the speed of service. Drinks took a long time and there was not even offers to warm up pastries. Service: Friendly to a fault, spent a lot of time chatting with customers and the line started to go out the door. I just happened to come by here for pastries on my way to Whole Foods and this was such a great find! Their classic baguettes are made with sourdough - and have that classic chewy texture of sourdough. Took one home and it's so good with butter. The canelle is also very good - I've seen these but never had one before. Was very pleasantly surprised - crisp on the outside but chewy and soft inside, a mild bitter taste but complemented with a sweet tone. This is the first time I've had monkey bread too - which the server told me was like fried dough - but theirs taste a lot like a cinnamon roll! I trekked 25 minutes by foot specifically to try Runner & Stone's almond croissant, after reading the myriad of glowing reviews about this particular item. Forking over $4 for the somewhat smaller-than-expected pastry, I had high expectations. I would say that it met, but did not exceed, my expectations. The almond croissant was very flaky, but overall I found it to be overbaked and somewhat dense. The almond paste, however, in the middle is a thing of beauty. I appreciated that it was rich and abundant, but not too sweet or cloying. I probably wouldn't seek it out again since I found the outer layer too crusty, but I enjoyed it for what it was worth. read more

I came here for brunch during my lunch hour. The service here was really fast: getting seated, ordering, and my food coming out happened in a 15-20 minute window. I ordered the french toast with a side of bacon. The french toast had an amazing marmalade on top of it. That marmalade with the very savory syrup was a perfect blend. I was tempted to order another french toast to go. The bacon was good and had a nice crunch to it. I expected to get a bigger portion of bacon for the price. The restaurant seems small but I didn't venture past the bar seating. For a place that's a bakery first and a restaurant second...this is a damn fine restaurant. I'm not sure if they are simply the nicest folks around or if the waitress was desperately in love with me,* but they started us off with fantastic mini-croissants, and when we were leaving they sent the two couples at our table our way with a loaf of excellent bread each (again, bakery first). In between, we indulged in fried chicken, strip steaks, amazing pastas, chicken liver pate, and much more. I'm not going to complain about any of it. The wine list, while short and sweet, is surprisingly on point as well. We aren't winos...wait, we are winos. We aren't wine SNOBS, but we definitely found their curated selections to be delicious. Chocolate croissants are good. Almond croissants are good too. But Chocolate Almond Croissants? Amazing. I've eaten many of the first two, but I rarely see the hybrid version that I tried here, which turned out to be one of the best croissants I've eaten. First of all, this thing is huge. It just feels heavy. Croissants usually feel light and airy, but this beast really weighed down the bag it was in. Unlike most chocolate croissants, this one was packed generously with chocolate. Similarly, it was topped with more almonds than usual as well. This was an extremely satisfying croissant for a reasonable price of $3.50. We also tried the Pretzel ($2.50). This choice was a little suspect since pretzels can often turn out to be a waste at these hipster/artisanal joints, but this did not disappoint. It was deliciously soft and chewy, with a perfect amount of salt. Though this review is just for the few things I tried from the bakery up front, they have full menus for what look like some classy meals here that I would love to come back and try. read more

Tried the duck pastrami-best duck I've had! baby iceberg salad-pretty good grilled porkchop-very nice flavor and quite tender One of our party had the fish of the day which was a black bass that she really enjoyed as well. The service was really good and prompt. Only thing was, at the end of the night I asked for a whiskey listing and indicated I might want scotch but ordered a bourbon instead and the waitress made a huge deal about how that's not scotch...like yea, i know...chill. Overall, good meal but really expensive and I wasn't that into the vibe of the place. (this is personal not a "fact" of the place) I just didn't feel like it was worth the money to me. Hands down, best almond chocolate croissant that I've had in New York City and the only croissant that stands up to the ones at b. Patisserie in San Francisco. The almond filling is thick, wonderfully textural, and not too sweet. The filling also subtly tastes like egg pudding, which I love. Even their plain croissant is sooo flaky and melts in your mouth as you chew. They also have a unique einkorn croissant, which is like a whole wheat croissant that has a more wholesome, grainy taste. It would be perfect to make an egg sandwich with or to enjoy with some jam. Besides being a bakery that has croissants you can't get anywhere else, Runner & Stone is a full restaurant plus bar. They manage to maintain a very relaxed and welcoming vibe in their chic, modern space. For dinner, their roasted beet salad had a unique cumin dressing that was warming and satisfying. It was a nice way to start the meal and I'd order it again. I usually don't like gnocchi because I find it can get mushy very easily, but theirs had a nice chew to it. Plus it was generously topped with... pistachio pecorino. So good. The cherry on top was the excellent, down-to-earth service. It really makes it feel like a go-to, neighborhood spot. We had a private event, around 12 people for a baby shower there for a Saturday Brunch. We were able to utilize a private room area downstairs that was the perfect size (can fit a few more) for our crowd. Julio was very easy to work with in organizing the event. The staff, including Emily, was very helpful and accommodating the day of the event. All of their food was delicious, the fried chicken being a crowd favorite! Stopped by for pastries because I had tried the anise fig bread a while back and loved it. I've seen the bad reviews in regards to service and thought, how bad could it be for ordering at the counter? While it wasn't terrible, the worker was obviously dreaming of the end of her shift because me and my sister requested the buckwheat bread TWICE and when we got home we realized that we were charged for it and there was no sign of the bread. Not to mention that we were told they were out of the anise bread and I pointed to a loaf in front of the worker and she was surprised and acknowledged that it was indeed anise. I've been overcharged at other bakeries before and tire of it when there's no excuse of the place being packed or there being a long and complicated order. None of that here. Moral is either to shop elsewhere or CHECK YOUR BAG BEFORE leaving the place. read more

Julio, the manager gives great service and will leave you feeling full and even a little tipsy! The food menu is well rounded and adaptable to food allergies. The lumache is so amazing- a vegan option that would be unrecognizable to someone who eats dairy. The pastas are all made in house which makes them so fresh. The staff are incredibly warm and helpful, and the food was outstanding. We had the hummus, vegan caesar, and crab-stuffed jalapeño apps. Then we shared a pasta, the steak, and fried chicken. I came here for dinner on a Monday night. The place is larger than you would expect from looking at the outside. We ordered the duck pastrami and the large orecchiette with pork sausage and broccoli raven. The bread basket was really good since they bake their own bread so the bread is fresh. The duck pastrami was interesting - making your own pastrami sandwich with duck breast instead of pastrami. The duck was not warm though. I wish it wasn't so cold.
