R&S Grilled Cheese

Food was great. Service was to the point. And the place itself is super confusing. Is it sit down ? Service? A bit unclear. I had to ask. Then there's wine and beer and coffee in the daytime. Decor is very much in between a cafe and fancy restaurant. Which is obviously quite drastic which causes my confusion. You see bus boys brining the food out to the front, to allow the person running the front to bring to the tables. Why not have the bussers bring the food to the tables. Seems silly the cashiers are doing multiple jobs.

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and interesting decor. The service is great. The pretzel was somewhat dry. The arancini was good, a bit dense, the sauce was flavorful. The squid ink pasta was slightly overcooked, both the pasta and the squid and the sauce didn't have a lot of flavor. Overall the food was fine but nothing was memorable.

mortadella sandwich

Upon coming into the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was the nice modern design and ambiance. I ordered the mortadella sandwich at the front, and the service was great. The workers were super kind. After sitting down, my sandwich came soon after. The sandwich is a perfect size for lunch, filled with fresh ingredients, huddled in soft foccacia-like bread. The ratios of the components were also perfect. It was definitely quite expensive -- $16! But I have gotten used to these prices in the city. It was a great spot since there was a lot of seating available, but it is not a place that I would go out of the way to visit again.

Latte

Grabbed some coffee and snacks from Runner & Stone on Saturday morning. An odd spot that needs more direction and simplification. Quality: It is a bit confusing as to what Runner & Stone wants to be. Several guests in line were attempting to order things they saw online that don't exist. Each menu in the place also seemed to have a different set of items listed. In the end I ordered what I could point to. My Latte was fine and pretty affordable. I had two snacks a Cheddar And Olive Pastry and an Almond Croissant. Again both fine, the Almond Croissant was a bit better than the savory option. Neither however would have me running back. Quantity: Standard size drinks and snacks. Value: $4 for a Latte. $4-$7 for Pastries. Ambiance: Runner & Stone is a cafe and bakery in Gowanus. I think it has had many different iterations from before COVID to now, but has settled into a coffee shop and bakery format. They have a large ordering counter, which seems too big for the space. A few tables near the front window, high-tops along the left wall, and a more tables towards the back provide just enough seating for the few guests that stay. The space is dim and not ideal for working or reading. Crowd: A line formed, but it was mostly because of the speed of service. Drinks took a long time and there was not even offers to warm up pastries. Service: Friendly to a fault, spent a lot of time chatting with customers and the line started to go out the door. Parking: A decent area to find a spot.

Almond croissant interior ($4)

I trekked 25 minutes by foot specifically to try Runner & Stone's almond croissant, after reading the myriad of glowing reviews about this particular item. Forking over $4 for the somewhat smaller-than-expected pastry, I had high expectations. I would say that it met, but did not exceed, my expectations. The almond croissant was very flaky, but overall I found it to be overbaked and somewhat dense. The almond paste, however, in the middle is a thing of beauty. I appreciated that it was rich and abundant, but not too sweet or cloying. I probably wouldn't seek it out again since I found the outer layer too crusty, but I enjoyed it for what it was worth.

Excellent food, and the bakery items are among the best in the area. Great service in a pleasant, warm and kind of rustic environment.

I don't even want to know the calorie count - but worth it!! My one negative was the chill of the Cabernet Yes, I know that's the trend but personally I prefer room temp especially in cold weather The restaurant owner was gracious, staff actually charming and accommodating We are recommending this place to family and friends and plan to return especially when going to BAM ENJOY!!

Walked in and was able to get a seat without reservation, but it definitely filled up by 6/7 pm. The place is dimly lit and the tables are quite small. For the food, we got their Brussel sprouts, shrimp, salmon entree and chicken entree. Our favorite were definitely the shrimp. But everything else when eaten together tasted a bit too greasy and felt monotonous in terms of flavor. Brussel sprouts were fried and held to a decent amount of oil, then the addition of tahini made it even more oily. Pan chicken we expected whole pieces of chicken but it was more like a thin chicken cutlet. The salmon came with a cauliflower puree which tasted so rich (with butter), but I couldn't finish it bc it was so rich.

We were, however, a bit disappointed over recent times that they pulled back from their original plan and stated mission of including the service charge in the cost--it both seemed worker forward and made the cost seem more reasonable, with service charge built into the fixed price. Now the cost seems like any other nice restaurant--far above and beyond the printed menu price. Don't get me wrong, it is exceptional dinner and still well worth it, but a mental adjustment. Their rotating dinner menu (fixed menu, now 3 and 5 course options for different price points) is a brilliant move, meaning you can find something seasonal and new and inventive every couple of weeks. We can't afford to come every two weeks, but we do look forward to the new menu release every two weeks to judge our level of temptation. I'd also note that they apply their same model to breakfast--it is slow service, without bar service as far as we could tell. It was dinner speed at a more bustling brunch time. The food was still stellar--delicious sourdough breakfast sandwich and fabulous spiced pumpkin waffle (even if I had to fight for the advertised maple syrup)--but the service painfully slow. It works over a four course dinner with cocktails, but feels a bit more interminable as you stare at your number for breakfast for 30+ minutes--I think they need to adjust their approach here. Overall we are so grateful to have this gem in our neighborhood--fabulous food, great service... truly some of the best food and service in a neighborhood lacking great options for both. I know we are all feeling tariffs and inflation and cost of living, but the pricing approach/change has moved it from a "let's see the new menu every two weeks" to a more occasional splurge, and I'd be wary of the breakfast/brunch experience if you aren't prepared for a very leisurely day.

We were seated at the window bar top, which we loved, as it was great for people watching. The vibe was calm and it wasn't loud at all. I actually kind of liked that we didn't have to choose our food and that the chef sent out the 3-course tasting menu. They were able to easily accommodate a gluten-free diet, which was appreciated. All of the food was pretty good and tasted fresh. I'm not sure how often they change their menu, but I would definitely come back!

But this is a reminder that no matter how good your cocktails are, no matter how delicious your food is, service is king, and a 20% automatic gratuity can often enable some pretty terrible staff management and lackadaisical attitudes. What a waste. I came here on Tuesday night with my top-tier chum to grab a drink before the Nets/Celtics game. I showed up about 15 minutes before she did and was able to secure two spots at the bar before her arrival. While I waited for her, I ordered a Dream Catcher, which sounded super tasty (Patron, and a lot of pineapple vibes)...and then I waited some more. The bartender was nice but she was just WAY too slow. She wasn't able to multitask and my drink literally took 10-15 minutes to make, which is just not acceptable, especially when it was clear it was the only one she was working on. It showed up a minute before my friend did, and my 15-minute head start was rendered completely moot. The other ominous development right from the start? While the bartender was slowly making the drink, two members of the waitstaff were just hanging out at the end of the bar playing on their phones. So already, it was clear that the support staff hadn't been managed/instructed to pitch in during periods of need. The drink itself was actually really good; it just took a ridiculous amount of time for her to make, which to me is both a strong indicator that you need to train her to do this quickly without losing the quality of the beverage and also ensuring that you have at least one other person helping her behind the bar. The bar itself was pretty packed and there wasn't a moment where she wasn't doing something. Read the room and get off your phone. That to me is an unforgiveable sin. When my friend showed up, she also ordered the Dream Catcher, and we got the Crab Rangoon and Shrimp Tempura apps to munch on. The apps came out pretty quickly and were really good - fried perfectly, which I think is the area where it's easy to overdo it and potentially ruin these items. Huge points there and made the service problems even more frustrating. We weren't provided with napkins/silverware to eat the apps, so my chum had to wander around the establishment looking for them (no one assisted her in that search). The slow bartending reared its head immediately and my chum also had to deal with a mystifying 15-minute wait for her cocktail. We had about 40 minutes to play with before we had to be at the game, but because the service was so mediocre, we couldn't risk it - so they missed out on a second drinks and apps. Just leaving money on the table. We were so disappointed walking out of there. A lot of the qualities you'd want to pre-game before an NBA matchup are here, and I didn't even get into the ambience, which was both pretty chill with dim lighting but also had a little electricity in it. They have a ton of good material to work with . But if you can't trust the staff to be engaged and provide quality hospitality, it doesn't really matter. We had a conversation about coming back here some other time potentially but they just don't deserve it. Also, if you're trying this hard to figure out a way to strategically have a good time at a bar, that's all you need to know - you've answered your own question. And when we saw the 20% gratuity added? Final slap in the face. Frankly, if you're going to do that, at the very least let us know when you hand us the bill that it's added on; it's so easy to miss in a darkened bar, and given the other issues I just can't give the benefit of the doubt there. But this is why automatic gratuities need to be abolished. The bartender and the rest of the staff have no incentive to roll up their sleeves and provide a positive experience - they're getting paid no matter what. Hopefully management really takes a step back to reconsider their stance here or at least improve the staffing so they don't take all of the legitimate positives here and throw them in the trash can. You should be building on the good stuff, not canceling it out.

Greetings all, it's been a while but here I am. Let's talk about Emily a quant pizza restaurant…read morethat you could easily walk pass and not know what they sold. Today however it wasn't pizza that brought me here, it was the famous Emmy Burger. To begin with the atmosphere of the restaurant is dim lighting a few tables with a reasonable sized bar in the middle of the room. They also have an open kitchen concept where just past the bar you can see the cooks working. My server Inda was polite and knowledgeable about the menu. My burger was excellent, normally I don't eat my burger with a knife and folk, but in this case with all the cheese and sauce oozing down the sides, not to mention the caramelized onions, it was necessary. (If I were home I wouldn't mind having burger juices running down my arm, but other people were eating in the restaurant also). The tiny pickles which I can't remember the name of were an added treat to the burger. I decided to order mine with the loaded fries. Just imagine the ground burger with all the toppings covering french fries and add melted white cheese. Since I was alone I didn't order a pizza because how would I eat it all, but next time I will try the pizza. I don't mind paying extra for a burger when it's aged beef and the taste is great. I definitely recommend this location. There is a fast food burger restaurant next door to Emily's but I can't imagine there burgers compare. I will try them another time and let you know. That's all for now, see you on my next review.
