I'm no stranger to Burmese food and this is a newer spot in the area. It is a quiet restaurant with nice decor. This area is surrounded by a lot of medical offices/facilities. Metered parking available in front of the restaurant and 2 hour street parking around the area. As usual, tea leaf salad is a must. This place included a generous amount of tea leaves for the salad. That's the best part! I don't care for the dried shrimp so I requested for the vegetarian version. They did not ask or mention anything about the salad being spicy. It wasn't spicy at all, not even a little bit. I would ask if it can be made a little spicy next time. But if it were a little spicy, it would be one better tea leaf salads I have had. The lunch specials were tasty. It came with a salad, soup and rice, extra charge for coconut rice. I didn't try it myself but I was told that the lamb wasnt gamey. Burma Superstar is always ridiculously crowded so I come here whenever I'm craving burmese food and want it immediately! I've been here many times, and definitely think its comparable to Burma. I highly suggest sitting in the back room where there are servers at every corner ready to refill your order and attend to your needs. I've heard that the servers are all from Burma and they are so warm and friendly! The Samusas are crispy and flakey on the outside with the perfect blend of fluffy, soft potato spice inside. I ADORE the coconut noodle soup and its my go to dish everytime I'm here! The savory sweetness from the soup is perfect for a rainy cold day and the chicken is buttery and soft. I also always order the coconut rice to go with the soup which can be too much for most people but I loveeee coconuts and would order a coconut drink and dessert if I could haha. The noodles on the other hand did not impress me. Many of them are served cold and they just didn't appeal to me. Adventures calls for trying new food and this is the spot my husband and I chose for dinner tonight. Honestly, neither of us ever tried Burmese food and we are glad we did! The ambience is very welcoming with lots of warm tones and there's a lot of tables and booths which are great for groups. There are parking with meters right in front of the restaurant but since we came in on a Sunday, it was free parking. We walked in 30 minutes before dinner rush hour and our server remained attentive to our table which was nice. We ordered the Pumpkin Salmon Stew which was amazing! We never knew that pumpkin and salmon went so well together and the spices used was well combined. We also ordered the Rangoon Lemongrass Chicken which was just okay. The chicken was very tender but the flavor was just alright. All entrees do not come with rice so that's extra. They do have a selection of different kind of rice you can choose from such as jasmine, coconut, brown and something I forgot. This was another excursion into Burmese cuisine. I think this compares to Burma Superstar. My beau and I went to RSS on a Saturday afternoon around lunch time. The place was not busy. The service was excellent and the food was good. I think the food is very similar to Burma Superstar. I don't know if I could tell a difference. The coconut rice was not as good, and the dishes weren't very spicy. The minced pork with garlic and mint was so salty it was almost inedible. The tea leaf salad was very good. It was mixed very well and it was a bigger portion than Burma Superstar. I would gladly come back here. It's not my favorite Burmese place but I like that there isn't a huge line. read more

Ever since I heard that Rangoon Super Stars was just like Burma Superstar but without the long wait, I had to try it. We went on a Tuesday night and got seated right away. The restaurant looks small at first but it is actually quite big as there is more seating behind the wall. For the appetizers we ordered the samosas, northern fried tofu and tea leaf salad. All of it was delicious and tasted very similar to Burma Superstar. For our entrees we ordered Rangoon Super Stars noodles which surprised me as I thought it was going to be a hot dish but it was served cold; but, it was still very tasty and I loved the fried garlic and onions in it. We also ordered the veggie kebat and it was very flavorful. The service was super fast. There was only one awkward moment where one expediter brought us the wrong dish and I wasn't sure if that was what we ordered and he said, "do you want it or not?" After confirming what the dish was called we eventually worked it out and got the correct one. First time having Burmese food and it was pretty good. This place is located on the Berkeley side of Oakland in an area that has lots of restaurants. It wasn't too difficult to find parking which was a plus. The restaurant seems small when you first step inside because there's only a few tables in the front, but there's a back room as well with plenty of tables. We called first which was good because there was a wait. It's pretty disorganized how they do the seating. They have a list that you put your name on and the number of people in your party but they don't go in order. One party that had been waiting for awhile got skipped twice, and they were only 3 people. Service was ok. They took our order right way which was great and our food came out fast which was a plus, but we didn't see our waiter a lot. I think there was only two waiters for the whole night plus the hostess. One thing I liked is that they asked if anyone has food allergies. It was helpful for my friend who's gluten free. I ordered the chicken ragoon with a side of jasmine rice. The dish was cool and filling, and it had flavor/the right amount of seasoning. One of my friends ordered the duck and she said it was a bit on the salty side but still good. My other friend ordered a coconut based soup that came with noodles and chicken. I tried a little bit of it and it lacked flavor. She put pepper flakes in but that didn't help. Came here on a Monday night with a friend. It was fairly quiet, although there were a few other groups of people dining here. We both got a glass of wine and the mango chicken. Note: you have to order rice on the side - it doesn't automatically come with rice. I just got jasmine rice, but they also have coconut rice which sounds good too! The mango chicken was delicious. Service was pretty quick and they were very responsive. The atmosphere is a little bland but if all you care about is the food, then I'd say it's worth it. It's also not too expensive. Stopped here for dinner on our way back from Napa. Having never had Burmese cuisine before, we were excited to give it a go. The server started by asking us if we had any food allergies, which I found quite considerate. The tea leaf salad is a must try, as shown by the many many yelper pictures on it! The fermented tea leaves mixed with all the other fresh veges makes a very delightful and tasty salad. We also got the fiery wok lamb, it was flavorful with the basil, lamb, green beans and peppers. I did find it rather greasy though and I could see the oil at the bottom of the dish. I would probably ask for less salt and oil next time. The Mohingga tasted the way our Burmese friends would have prepared it. Both the Burmese pork curry and shrimp chim baw dish were similarly exquisite. The Burmese milk tea had a hot or cold choice - simply reminiscent of authentic drinks. The mango lassi tasted just richly delicious in flavor. We tried the fried coconut pudding with mango ice cream, but it was not particularly exciting for me. All in all, a sumptuous meal in a very pleasant ambience. The level of noise was noticeably low so we could converse normally. The owners (Lin) run the place themselves and are happy to meet new clients. We highly enjoyed our lemongrass chicken and the Mint, jalapeño chicken dishes. Both dishes were unique, flavorful dishes in a sauce. The chicken was soft and tender. We also had a side of coconut & basmati rice to go with our dishes. The lunch also came with a small vegetable soup and a small ginger salad. Simple & good. 2/12/17: Burmese cuisine seems to be all the rage around here. All the ones I've been to have been very busy, and this one was no exception. Unfortunately I found this one to have mostly average food, perhaps at higher prices than deserved. I'll just cut to the chase--there's only one dish worthy of mention here, their Tea Leaf Salad for $12. As you probably know, this is the must-get dish at every Burmese restaurant. So, I've had a dozen of these at other places, and this one is by far the best! It's killer. The tea they use is the most flavorful fermented tea I've ever had the pleasure to taste. And they don't skimp on that stuff either! Mixed with all the other nuts and greens, and wow... The Best Tea Leaf Salad money can buy, bar none. Unfortunately, even that Tea Leaf Salad is not enough to warrant a higher star rating, as I feel most of the other dishes are subpar compared to what I've tried. For instance their Mohk Hingar for $12 is absolutely horrible. Totally mushy and bland--I just couldn't finish it. They said on the menu, "This is a famous dish from Burma...," but alas they butchered it I guess. To top it all off, the service is horrible here. Typically these popular Burmese places have at least excellent service--well, that's not the case here. They are really slow, and they also messed up an order. My gf had ordered her Pad Thai extra hot, and instead they brought it to her with zero heat, the polar opposite. We told the waiter that and his response was, well, I can bring you hot sauce and you can mix it in. Okay... so, we waited 10min and still no hot sauce. It really bums me to give four stars, because I want to give 5 - but nothing stood out enough to do that. I've personally never had Bernese food but it was delicious. Not outstanding, nor memorable, but edible. Ordered paletas and samosas as appetizers and neither had some stand-out flavor. I'm used to tamarind and Indian spices, but then again it isn't an Indian restaurant. As entrees we had pad thai and lemongrass chicken. I will give a major thumbs up to the cooking staff because I loved their tofu and how it was prepared for the pad thai. I usually avoid tofu and get it without it, but was impressed with how delicious it was and how it didn't taste rubbery. Finally, for dessert, we tried the fried bananas. We have been going to this restaurant since it opened because they generally have good food, plus the noise level is a little better than Burma Superstar. However, the host and wait staff is exceptionally rigid. In a restaurant where they had 7 booths empty, they would not let my friend and I sit in a booth because we were just 2 people. It was a Thursday evening, not a busy time, but because it is their rule to seat 3 or more in the booth, they would not accommodate us. The owner/manager came and stood next to us with a stubborn look on his face and we felt like we just had to leave. Honestly We were made to feel very uncomfortable. Customer service was not a priority - only their rules. We left the place and are never going to go and eat there again.
