What a wonderful delight to have found this place. There are metered parking right in front of the restaurant and it doesn't appear to be heavy occupied. There are a whole lot of space. (They take credit card or coins) Upon entering, we were greeted with a smile. A polite gentlemen seated us right away. Their menu is extensive and inviting. The place is clean and the food presentation has the wow factor. I rate this place 4.5 stars but I can't rate them only a 4........simply because even though everything is wonderful, they are not generous with their rice orders. I still believe this should be included with the meal. Our Meal came to about $20 a person, which is not bad considering everything was delicious. A must try Burmese Restaurant in Berkeley. Really sad I didn't try this restaurant earlier, and now I'm leaving Berkeley. :'( I got a Burmese beer here, a light crisp lager that goes great with your meal. Everything I tried here was super delicious and tasty- lots of flavor! Mint jalapeno tofu, garlic noodle, and the chin baung kyaw (roselle leaves dish with bamboo shoots) SO GOOD. My boyfriend used to frequent this place and has been wanting to take me here for awhile. We got news they finally reopened after two years, we excitedly came to visit! I dabbled in take-out and wasn't super impressed. Cut to me 2 years later wanting to grab dinner with the fam on the way home and the legendary Shayla B's review popped up and I was like: let's do this. Inside is actually a quite large restaurant: great for groups. Clearly the husband-wife owner team are there making this ship run smoothly and efficiently. Water glasses were always full, plates quickly cleaned, our order taken quickly (since we had our toddler with us demanding noodles), food was out in record time. The food is good! I wish I chatted with the owner more about Burmese food, since we went with pretty basic stuff: Garlic noodles with chicken, sesame beef and palaka (fried bread). It was all really good. I'd say the sesame beef was the least enticing of the bunch, but it was exactly what it said it was: wok fried beef. Next time, I'm going to order for me instead of my 2 year old. Reasonably priced, at about $60 with tip for 2.5 people, Drake's on tap, good food and the idea of truly patronizing a locally owned business where the owners are present and working makes this spot an add-on to the neighborhood rotation. read more

Been here a couple of times for dinner - overall very solid Burmese food in Berkeley that won't break you wallet. Food: Mango chicken, basil chili beef and coconut rice is definitely my go to order! The coconut rice especially elevated the meal. Their eggplant with garlic and seafood is also decent, but not as good as the chicken/beef option. Points off for the appetizers - not a huge variety of selection when it comes to appetizers compared to other Burmese food in the area. The salmon pumpkin stew was ok, though not flavorful -- probably because we ordered it mild. Coconut rice was ok. The Indian rice was weird -- either old or inauthentic or cooked wrong. Rice portions were too small for the dishes served, compared to other restaurants. Milk tea was boring. Tea Leaf Salad was oily and had too many peanuts and tasted less flavorful than others I've had. My friend got the pork belly and seemed to like it but didn't rave about it. The special ice cream dessert was very heavy and the flavors of mango and green tea were barely tasted, and the ice cream colors looked like tons of food coloring. The seating area is dark and smelled of cleaning chemicals. We had asked to sit by the window initially but were redirected to this area although the restaurant was empty. I think they just wanted the customers together near the kitchen. The menus seemed dirty especially the dessert menu seemed like it came from the garbage. A hidden gem: Best halal Burmese place in the Bay Area We went with a party of 8. In order to reserve, we called ahead of time and confirmed a 7:30 pm check in. Waiter said we were welcome to walk in. He also verbally confirmed the food was halal. Satisfied, we drove to the place at the confirmed time. Decor was pretty nice and the restaurant was quiet given there were very few diners. We ordered the following appetizers and mains:- 1- Tea leaf salad 2- Samosa 3- Mango salad 4- Basil chilli lamb 5- Basil chilli beef 6- Sesame chicken 7- Fried rice 8- Coconut rice All the items were absolutely delicious! We heard about this place because it has Burmese food which is very well known. Burma superstar is a famous place which rings a bell too and has similar food, or at least some famous dishes. The place was full and the staff was extremely friendly, polite and efficient with seating us and taking our order. We got the Tea leaf salad 9/10 and it was super. The ingredients came together so well and I just felt healthy after eating it. We also tried the sesame chicken - 8/10, the Burmese beef curry 9/10, the Burmese garlic noodles with duck- 7.5/10 and the Burmese rice -8/10 ( tasted like Indian biryani). My friend likes her sake a lot too. We got a coffee after and that was not too great so I won't recommend it. The food over all really good, the flavours were excellent, the bathrooms are decent, the service is quick and thus I absolutely recommend this place to everyone!! This place is comparable to Burma Superstar, but better in a way that it has the mom & pop feel, more locally loved and their pricing is better for excellent quality and authenticity. Nice atmosphere and solid food with many vegetarian optiosn (4/5 green stars also) I've been to Royal Rangoon (formerly Rangoon Superstars) three or four times and it has always been a good experience. The interior is large, with a mix of tables and booths, and the staff members are always pleasant. The salads (tea leaf or rainbow) are a good choice if you've never had them and their garlic noodles (with tofu) are good too. Beer selection is not that exciting but there are a couple of decent local choices (Trumer, Sierra) and a range of other options from oolong tea to nigori sake. Good place for vegetarians and I just noticed that their veggie dishes cost a good bit less than meat or fish dishes. Most of the veggie main courses are $10-12 (for dinner) and there's a very wide selection. Look forward to trying more! I'm also giving them 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact based on these reasons: Positives: * A lot of vegetarian options on the menu. * They support the community by offering special rates for community events and school functions. (They also offer student discounts.) * As far as I remember their to-go packaging is fairly sustainable (mostly cardboard). So what to do what to do when you want Burmese food but can't be bothered with Burmese Superstar? Discovered this place a few years ago with some old roommates, including one who is Burmese. I'm not always craving Burmese but when I do, I come here. The food is delicious, seating is ample (never have had to wait), and the couple who own in are so nice. Yesterday we told the gentleman that we were fasting so if any food could come out within 10 minutes, that would be great. To our happy surprise, it all came out within 10 minutes! Their tea leaf salad is excellent. He explained to us that that purchase only from one specific Burmese family so they can assure the quality of it. The Chef Win Aye is the Former Chief Chef of Burma Superstar in Oakland and Alameda and Rangoon Ruby in Palo Alto and San Carlos . Presently he is at Rangoon Super Stars . The Decor and Art work is very Tasteful and Authentic. I think it would make a great date spot. When my Server Jason returned I ordered the Vegetarian Samosas , Sesame Chicken , Garlic Shrimp & Eggplant with Coconut Rice. My Server Jason was on Point . My Water glass never ran empty and he would check in with me often to see that my needs were being kept. My Server Jason brought my Samosas first. When giants fall...part 2. I went here because I was expecting Burma Superstar food without the Burma Superstar wait. But wait we did. We waited for a total of 25 minutes. And no one came to greet us. After about 15 minutes a woman came to us and told us that a table would be opening up. The only reason she saw us was because she was helping a customer with a togo order and he'd come in to pick it up. It was about five minutes after that that she came to us. I ordered the dish that I'd order the last time I was there when we were finally seated. A chicken salad with jalapeno and lime. Last time I was there I had it with a gewurztraminer and they paired perfectly. The spiciness of the food played quite well with the wine and I was in heaven. Unfortunately, this time the food tasted like bland chicken. There was no mintiness and there were jalapenos, however, no spice. Luckily, I decided against ordering the wine because the prices were insane! But I brought the food home and paired it with a risotto that my husband had made and put it in the freezer. When I pulled it out and reheated, it was still as flavorless as could be. My husband was equally disappointed with his meal. And no, we're never going back. read more

Metered parking available in front of the restaurant and 2 hour street parking around the area. As usual, tea leaf salad is a must. This place included a generous amount of tea leaves for the salad. That's the best part! I don't care for the dried shrimp so I requested for the vegetarian version. They did not ask or mention anything about the salad being spicy. It wasn't spicy at all, not even a little bit. I would ask if it can be made a little spicy next time. But if it were a little spicy, it would be one better tea leaf salads I have had. The lunch specials were tasty. It came with a salad, soup and rice, extra charge for coconut rice. I didn't try it myself but I was told that the lamb wasnt gamey. Burma Superstar is always ridiculously crowded so I come here whenever I'm craving burmese food and want it immediately! I've been here many times, and definitely think its comparable to Burma. I highly suggest sitting in the back room where there are servers at every corner ready to refill your order and attend to your needs. I've heard that the servers are all from Burma and they are so warm and friendly! The Samusas are crispy and flakey on the outside with the perfect blend of fluffy, soft potato spice inside. I ADORE the coconut noodle soup and its my go to dish everytime I'm here! The savory sweetness from the soup is perfect for a rainy cold day and the chicken is buttery and soft. I also always order the coconut rice to go with the soup which can be too much for most people but I loveeee coconuts and would order a coconut drink and dessert if I could haha. The noodles on the other hand did not impress me. Many of them are served cold and they just didn't appeal to me. Adventures calls for trying new food and this is the spot my husband and I chose for dinner tonight. Honestly, neither of us ever tried Burmese food and we are glad we did! The ambience is very welcoming with lots of warm tones and there's a lot of tables and booths which are great for groups. Located farther down Telegraph, Royal Rangoon is a nice place to go to when you have a larger group since there's meter parking nearby. When you walk it in it looks pretty small because of how the place is broken up, but if you walk a little farther to the back you'll see there's another hall leading to another seating area. | FOOD | + Tea Leaf Salad - Can't really go wrong with this! Tea leaf salad is one of my all time faves, but if you're not familiar with it the salad has a slightly fermented taste due to the fried shrimp. It has a nice kick with the jalapeno but it's balanced out with the lemon and nuts they add in. + Northern Fried Tofu - I expected this to be more fried given the name, but since it's made with yellow bean powder the texture is more of a like a mashed potato patty. The soy chili sauce they pair it with is more on the sweet side so it's not spicy. Not what I was expecting but it was a nice surprise. + Palata - Can never go wrong with fried, buttery, and flaky bread! This is a great option to share, but I wasn't a huge fan of the vegetarian curry. The curry was more chunks of veggies vs. the soup which isn't my preference. + Garlic Pork - I was also surprised with this dish. I expected the dish to consist of large chunks of pork but it's actually made up of much smaller pieces that I thought was better with the mix of onions and chilis. It's on the saltier side of things, but it's balanced out with jasmine or coconut rice. + Sesame Beef - The winner of the meal in my opinion. The beef was tender and perfectly covered in the tangy sauce and sesame seeds. It wasn't too saucy either so it maintained the fried texture. + Honey Walnut Shrimp - Yum! This was also another fave of the dinner. The shrimp pieces were huge and were coated with just the right amount of sauce. The sauce was a nice mix too so it didn't have that super mayo taste that it sometimes can have. In addition to walnuts they also add some sesame seeds so it's a nice twist to what I'm used to. + Coconut Rice - Try this if you want something different from jasmine/fried rice. It had too much of a coconut taste for my preferences, but it's a nice contrast from the normal. | SERVICE | Service here is decent, not the most attentive with this visit but still friendly. They only really came around to take our order, to bring us entrees, and to pack up our food. This was another excursion into Burmese cuisine. I think this compares to Burma Superstar. My beau and I went to RSS on a Saturday afternoon around lunch time. The place was not busy. The service was excellent and the food was good. I think the food is very similar to Burma Superstar. I don't know if I could tell a difference. The coconut rice was not as good, and the dishes weren't very spicy. The minced pork with garlic and mint was so salty it was almost inedible. The tea leaf salad was very good. It was mixed very well and it was a bigger portion than Burma Superstar. I would gladly come back here. It's not my favorite Burmese place but I like that there isn't a huge line. read more
